Welcome to the fourth episode of The Movies And Me, a new podcast project of ours where in each of these episodes we sit down and talk with a filmmaker or someone who works in the film industry about their newest and latest film project or just a big cinephile in general who just lives for movies. We also ask about and discuss their four favourite films that have inspired them to go out and have a career in film or just at the very least inspire them.On this episode, we are delighted to chat with filmmaker William Darbyshire, Anders's old friend from Met Film School in London. After graduating from Met Film School in 2013, Will started making films for his YouTube channel. He has earned quite a large following with amassing over 615,000 subscribers. The work that he did through his channel showcased unique and profound views on travel, relationships and mental health. In 2016, Will reached out to his followers to send him their intimate thoughts about their relationship experiences, in the form of written letters, poems, photographs, and emails. The book, This Modern Love, is a collection of love and heartache from Will's followers. It was a Sunday Times bestseller and sold over 100,000 copies. A follow up book to This Modern Love is in the making. If you follow Will on his social media platforms like Instagram or Twitter, you can find info on it there. And also where to send in submissions to have it possibly be featured in the book. In Will's words if you have something to get off your chest and have it be considered for the next instalment, simply write a letter that you would want to send to your crush or your ex and email it to the email inbox: submissions@thismodern.love. It can take on the form of whatever you feel is best to express yourself, all you have to do is provide your first name, age and location. Will still keeps up with his filmmaking and is currently writing and developing short and feature film ideas. His recent short film Cycles has just had a successful film festival run. We had so much fun talking to Will about his career and hearing what his four favourite films are. Art of Dynamic Competence: Creating Success in Changing Times

In Part 2 of Will's Podcast. As I have alluded to, I am working a lot in understanding how deeper, latent knowledge that we have (magic and mythic) can help us function from a more integrated whole.  In a class that I am hosting, we are exploring how our magic and mythic perspectives/cultural structures dance with our mental conceptual world to create this integral understanding and being. Many philosophers, religions, and practices incorporate aspects of this dance, but Jean Gebser drives right to it. He states that there are four differentiated cultural structures, magic, mythic, mental, and integral.  We live in the magic, you experience the mythic, and each of us creates our own conceptual understanding in the mental. And the integral is the efficient interweaving, backleaping, blending, oscillation, etc. between these structures/perspectives. Gebser, along with many other thinkers and writers, then states that our current over emphasis on the power of the mental to structure our lives and solve our problems is deficient and failing us. It is this integral approach that will help us reimagine our world and help us move through this pinch point, over this threshold, and better survive and thrive in the coming times. In Will's second part of his podcast, we can tease out those magic and mythic elements that are so important in waking up to new ways of seeing the world and ourselves in it.

In this episode of the ROI Online Podcast, host Steve Brown interviews Will Leach, author of Marketing to Mindstates, founder of Triggerpoint, and CEO of the Mindstate Group.  Will's background is diverse; he performed poorly as a student and was a military man before transitioning to a career in economics, focusing on future prediction.  From there, he went to Azusa Business School and studied market research.  While working in marketing, he began to draw connections between market research and behavioral psychology.   Ultimately, Will found that rational economics, the standard tool in market research, missed a crucial component of effective marketing strategy.  It held that no change in the environment should mean no change in a population's consumer patterns; however, it failed to reckon with the emotional aspect of the consumers.  In reality, consumers are shaped by emotional reactions, which is why appealing to such things as the scarcity effect and goal theory makes marketing more effective. Given these realities, those marketing goods and services to consumers need to understand the customer's higher-order goal.  Discerning this goal can take time, is often discovered by intuition, and can be determined through a process called laddering.  Appealing to a higher-order goal helps a marketer to build trust, empathy, and relationships.  In Will's own work, he markets to mindstates rather than people, allowing himself to honor the complexities of real people.  His science-backed methods have proved enormously fruitful for him, and he is especially passionate about helping small businesses develop a consistent marketing strategy, and about helping entrepreneurs see that they can implement the marketing techniques he's shared without a significant financial commitment.   Learn more about Will Leach on LinkedIn and Twitter, and at marketingtomindstates.com.Read his book, Marketing to Mindstates.Visit mindstategroup.com to learn more about Mindstate Group Read Steve Brown's book, The Golden Toilet.Thinking of starting your own podcast? He was born into a life where at age 7 he was sexually abused by his step father. At that time, his home was no longer a place that was safe and secure, a place where he no longer called “home”. Due to the sexual abuse, Will was left feeling confused, sad, angry and searching for answers over the next several years. In Will’s journey to find answers, he learned that what he really wanted was a loving father and mother that would protect him and love him unconditionally. Just like many other young teenage boys in similar situations, they did find that love in their own home so they look for that love and protection in the form of a gang. Will found his “love” and “protection” with The Blackstones gang in Chicago. At an early age of 13, Will found himself living a lifestyle of gang member. This lifestyle went from feeling powerful, cared for and protected to almost losing his life and seeing others die.At age 15, he witnessed his friend being murdered by a rival gang and when the gun was pointed to his to his head, the gun jammed. Will was then beaten almost to death. The gang cut him with knives and beat him with a baseball bat. Will was left for dead. Gratefully, Will survived and this was the beginning of his journey to saving others lives. Will moved to Des Moines in his 20’s and began a new life where he wanted to focus on his future and how he wanted to be remembered. He wanted to make a change for others so they don’t have to go through life without feeling cared for, loved, or being in a home where they can feel safe. His legacy started when he started giving back to his community and to youth who are faced with similar situations that he was in. He began mentoring youth on a daily basis as a team member of the ManUp Iowa program for at risk youth. Will found that his true God given abilities were helping others and empowering them to go down a better path…one he wishes he would have had the opportunity to go down when he was younger. Will is busy inspiring at risk youth in the Des Moines Public Schools, motivating through speaking events, and performing his empowering songs. Among the songs that he has released over the last several years, his hit song “Wake Up Iowa” is the song that means the most to him and the song he spent the most time on. Wake Up Iowa sends a message to people that violence and hate is not the Iowa way and instead we need to learn from other cities mistakes so we don’t end up being ravaged by violence and crime. Many leaders around the city and state are becoming familiar with Will and his music, as well as his passion for helping youth and his overall huge heart and amazing spirit. He has been in the press countless times for his movement and is the first to ever have city officials in his music video. Will has strong relationships and has been in collaboration with Governor Kim Reynolds, Police Chief Dana Wingert, and Pastor Al Perez. In a world where violence and hate is far too common, it takes individuals like William Holmes to help rid the world of these atrocities. One thing is for sure, however, Will cannot continue his mission of empowering youth to make positive life choices through music, sports, education or whatever their dreams may be without all of our help! The help of a community that owes it to all of our children to create a world where youth do not have to grow up like Will did. It’s also on our community to maintain that world for future generations to come and support good doers like Will. At the end of the day, you can tell when someone has a good heart and is doing things for the right reasons and this is William Holmes aka Will Keeps legacy.

We’re all tempted to fashion Jesus in our own image. It’s never been more prevalent that it is today in Western culture where individualism and moral relativism reigns supreme. 2 October 2017 – Some days it’s hard to remember that despite all appearances, there is a world out there beyond Trump and all the many, many ways he is failing this week. The truly dazzling economist Dr. Pavlina Tcherneva (her excellent site is here) is with us for the interview. I was able to interview her in person at the First International Conference of Modern Monetary Theory (MMT Conference). We talked about how the, now famous, chart (see above) she developed was able to influence the conversation around inequality and how a job guarantee program can add more than just jobs to a society. It is inspiring to know the modern monetary theory rests in the hands of economists, like Pavlina, who have a clear connection to the ground truth of the programs and policies they imagine into existence. I start out the show with just a quick overview of my experience at the MMT conference. It was genuinely compelling and I was overwhelmed by all the ideas and applications of MMT to which I was exposed. You will be hearing about many of these in depth in the future and I promise you will be intrigued too. Will then updated everyone on the events in Catalonia related to the independence vote. Spain is refusing to acknowledge the vote and tension is ratcheting up. Will has covered Catalonia in the past and promises a deep dive next week. We touched briefly on Puerto Rico. Now that it is (finally) being followed by major media we are leaving most of that to actual journalists but people are suffering and our President, while golfing, is too busy trying to shame the Mayor of San Juan with tweets to actually send an appropriate level of support. It’s not just frustrating or inhumane, it’s evil. In Will’s main block he talked about Brexit. Many are saying that all the economic ills projected by those who wanted to remain in the European Union have not come to pass and were therefore simply election scare tactics. Will points out the obvious, the UK is still in the EU and the pain from Brexit will not be felt until Brexit actually occurs. It remains reasonable to expect cost-push inflation (also known as supply shock) as the UK strikes out on its own. In my block I briefly lay out my reasons for supporting Bernie’s current “Medicare for All” bill. This may surprise some of you but I find this bill to be essential and extremely well-timed. Don’t get me wrong, this bill won’t move and, ultimately, the bill that does move will look different but here’s the thing – we can’t legislate until we get elected. Will disagrees but I think “Medicare for All” is a good bumper sticker way to sum up the shared Democratic party value that healthcare is a right. I think having this bill under active discussion now gives us an opportunity to build coalition and consensus in preparation for a non-Trump future. No matter what, this bill has already moved the Overton Window and that in and of itself is critical. Bernie has written a solid bill and he is gathering important voices. There is long, hard work ahead to build unstoppable grassroots momentum but this is how healthcare gets changed for real. It will take all of us…and it should. Carrots! – Arliss Since recording this episode, the Spanish government has acted without restraint or dignity in Catalonia, attacking unarmed civilians with a wave of brutal repression. Many folks who oppose the referendum say that holding it is illegal. That may be true, but it isn’t an excuse for state violence. Spain had every ability to refuse to acknowledge the vote, which was itself an act of civil disobedience. But instead of responding to this act with restraint, and refusing to acknowledge the results, they chose to wage an unnecessary and unnecessarily brutal campaign of violence against the Catalan people. These actions bring the legitimacy of Rajoy’s governance of Catalonia into question. Things will likely only get worse in the coming days. I will report in depth on the situation next week, and tal

18 September 2017 – Every time Denise Oliver-Velez is on our show I learn so much! This week we asked Denise to join us to cover what is happening in the Caribbean following Hurricane Irma. I particularly loved the posts Denise put up at Daily Kos on Puerto Rico and the history of the word “hurricane” as well as her thoughts on the subject. We spend most of our time on Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, the places where Irma really did first make landfall in the US. (If you thought that was Florida you weren’t alone.) In our Lying Liar Lie of the Week segment Will talks about an attack against a trans woman during a protest at Speaker’s Corner in the UK. Fortunately, it was caught on video and Will walks us through it as well as posting the video and some stills here. In Lying Liar I talk for just a minute about Equifax who is making the obviously false statement that “they are doing everything they can.” This is clearly not the case and I’m quite sure we will be talking about them in the near future. In Will’s big block he talked about climate change, weather, alternate energy and politics. It’s appalling to think that the states which most need to confront new kinds of energy generation are fighting it the hardest. In my block I get into the profits being made by Facebook, Google and tech in general, to promulgate hate. The blood money tech companies are taking as they act as conduits for hate groups (and terrorism) is much more costly to society than it is profitable in annual reports. We simply must find an effective way to address this. And one more thing… In a special election, scheduled for 26 September, Florida State Senate candidate Annette Taddeo is facing an extreme get-out-the-vote (GOTV) challenge. She is running in District 40, which is Miami-Dade, and many of her prospective constituents are among those who had to evacuate. Flippable.org has identified this race as one which can be won but needs immediate help. Anything you can do would be appreciated. Carrots! – Arliss

25 July 2016 - Jesse LaGreca (@JesseLaGreca), political activist and commentor, manages to be both incisive and hilarious with his jackhammer-pounding, nailgun-fast insight into the underlying structure of the current election cycle. In the first half of the interview Jesse both breaks down the structural problems with the GOP and brings true thoughtful analysis to the pick of Tim Kaine. In Extra Mad he gets into more detail and provides some of the sharpest wit I have heard on these topics to date. At the top of the show I round-up the latest developments in court rulings on voting rights summarizing the Wisconsin, Texas and Virginia decisions. I also take a moment out to remind everyone that, (to paraphrase James Carville), "It's the Supreme Court, stupid!" Will , then, takes a few minutes to talk about just how dangerous the GOP has become and concludes by quoting Professor Halford E. Luccock, of the Yale Divinity School, who said during World War II, When and if fascism comes to America it will not be labeled 'made in Germany'; it will not be marked with a swastika; it will not even be called 'fascism;' it will be called, of course, 'Americanism.' If you did not hear Donald Trump's acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention, the word "Americanism" features prominently. No joke. In Will's block he brings us all up to date on the ruling handed down addressing the conflict between the Phillippines and China over the Spratly Islands and, more importantly, the surrounding sea lanes. What is especially interesting about the ruling really comes down to how international law will be enforced in the foreseeable future. In my block I get into the Italian banking crisis and talk about the difference between a bail-out and a bail-in. Just when you were thinking that Italian banks can't possibly be a big deal for you personally, I explain why the new bail-in regime Italy is fighting will likely cost you money when you go to buy a car or a house. We had fun this week and I hope you do too. - Carrots! Arliss

“A lot of people think that crowdfunding is the first step, but there are obviously a lot of things that need to happen before that.”   Do you only have a couple hours a day outside of your job and family to work on your own stuff and are worried if you are on the right track? Are you living on a tight budget and cannot afford to spend time and money without knowing if your project will succeed? If you believe that you have the perfect product idea and haven’t spoken to a single person about your idea, or tried to sell your idea to someone, you’re in for a rude awakening. YOU WILL LIKELY BLOW IT! Pat Flynn made that mistake. Yup. THE Pat Flynn of the Smart Passive Income Podcast. Pat wasted $15,000 and over 3 months of his time and emotional energy building two different WordPress plugins that literally no one would pay for. Nobody wanted it. Most people think all it takes is a great idea to launch a business. In fact, most of the people that call me, asking for my help to launch their product that they have spent YEARS and tens of thousands of dollars developing, I have to turn down... ...because they haven’t validated their idea. 30+ years ago we had to go to libraries to do research to make sure your business would work was very difficult. With the interwebs, validation is fast and easy IF you know what you are doing. Pat Flynn learned from his previous mistakes, found and talked to potential customers first, validated his next plugin, The Smart Podcast Player, which is now making hundreds of dollars per day. In this episode, you will hear what Pat did to guarantee the success on his third try and what you can do to maximize your chances on your first. If you are an experienced entrepreneur who has taken their lumps, then this podcast will bring back some memories and be a great reminder of how to do things the right way. If you have never started a business and are looking to Crowdfunding to get going, then you have to listen to this episode. I invited Pat Flynn onto the show after reading his bestselling book: Will it Fly. In Will it Fly, Pat discussed product validation as a critical first step before you waste your time and energy launching something that nobody wants. You will learn: Exactly what validating a business idea is and why it is so important How a successful Crowdfunding campaign is NOT the validation you should be looking for… you have to have it long before you launch How to find out if people will buy your product before you spend thousands of dollars in development 3 key questions to ask potential customers to validate your idea How to get great ideas for your next business that are guaranteed to work out   Show Notes: Will It Fly?
