Welcome to the Data Security Decoded podcast by Rubrik Zero Labs. In this episode, our host Caleb Tolin speaks with Pavlina Pavlova, a researcher and cybersecurity advocate focused on data weaponization and its disproportionate impact on vulnerable populations. Pavlina defines data weaponization, explains how attacks on healthcare and critical infrastructure affect different populations unequally, and discusses how current policy frameworks fail to address gender dimensions. She also shares practical advice for under-resourced organizations to improve their cyber resilience despite limited funding, emphasizing the importance of international cooperation and responsible data collection practices.
Leveraging data is one of an organization's most valuable assets. Metrics measure market competitiveness and help ensure pay equity and compliance with federal and state laws and regulations.
On this episode, host Kathleen McInnis spoke with Pavlina Pavlova, a #ShareTheMicInCyber Fellow at New America and Cybercrime Expert at the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). Pavlina shares insights from her recent research on the weaponization of data, highlighting how data breaches and cyberattacks have a gendered dimension, especially throughout the healthcare system.

Čeprav si prva brazilska svetnica, sva tako rekoč soseda …
The Humble Sea (https://humblesea.com) origin story told by cofounder and brewmaster Nick Pavlina is a common one: Avid homebrewer turns pro at the urging of family and friends. Yet that early experience with brewing, brewing, and brewing some more—on a one-barrel system—instilled a discipline for testing, evaluating, and adapting that stays with Humble Sea to this day. A 2022 World Beer Cup silver medal for Munich-style helles gave them the validation they sought for the nascent lager program—but rather than anchor them in place, that success put more wind in their experimental sails. They continue to tinker with that beer, testing mash-step times and temperatures as well as fermentation parameters, in an ongoing quest to make it as perfect as possible. Meanwhile, they've hitched a ride on the swift current of hazy IPA—or, in their lingo, “foggy IPA”—but they've done so in ways inspired by their West Coast locale. The result has been significant growth, and the brewery now has five different ports they call home. In this episode, Pavlina and brewing operations director Nate Chesser discuss: developing a house lager style by assembling pieces of various traditions and the practices of brewer peers changing and adjusting their medal-winning helles despite its success embracing decoction for both its tangible and intangible benefits choosing and sourcing Noble hops for helles and pilsner fermenting lagers with a less common yeast strain building their initial “foggy” IPA out of a Pliny the Elder–inspired recipe leaning into their unique water profile spunding IPA for natural carbonation And more. Jane Does Well organically became a group of women talking about divorce and supporting each other. -Christina Pavlina This week's guest was nominated by listeners twice, thanks to the support and community she has created for women going through divorce. Meet Christina Pavlina, co-founder & Executive Director of Jane Does Well, www.janedoeswell.org. Whether it is your choice or not, divorce is a heartache. If you've got children, the impact is even greater. Christina has walked this walk, and now she talks the talk. Through hands-on, practical programming, this unique non-profit helps women get through the trauma of divorce. Says Christina: “I didn't know how to navigate my own sense of loss, and at the same time, I didn't know how to help my children.” After I got through my own divorce, I realized I could help others.” The lessons she learned have been passed on to hundreds of women who have benefitted greatly from the services Jane Does Well provides. The organization has grown organically year after year and today, includes an ordained minister who experienced divorce herself, came to Jane Does Well for help, and is now the Director of Wellness and Trauma Programs. Jane Anderson oversees 10-week support groups for everyone from young moms to senior citizens. Christina explains: “The best way to overcome the loneliness of divorce is to talk to women who get it. Your family loves you. Your friends love you, but they will not understand what you are dealing with during and after divorce. Jane Does Well fills that gap.” #divorce #community #empowerment

You're so brave she said… when I shared with the clerk in the store that I had a home birth. How interesting that we can still see birth as something that has to be monitored, scheduled, and managed, as a disease instead of a natural event that our bodies know how to work with. And I'm not surprised. When my hubby said that we will do a home birth when someone asked us I thought he was crazy. That it's not safe. So I started to do my research as the right 5/1 generator. And actually found out that home birth in USA is so much safer than hospital. I went on a rabbit hole of books, classes and all I could put my hands on to learn about natural birth to bring our baby girl here safely and healthily. Yet no amount of studying could possibly prepare me for the powerful 12-hour experience before I held our baby for the first time. When I got my first surges (aka contractions in more positive way said in Hypnobirthing world) I told it's just a trial run so I went from bed to bathroom back and forth. And then after timing the surges and seeing that they come each 10-8 mins I realized we're not only on trial run this is happening. So when my hubby woke up around 3am to go to the bathroom I told him we are having surges last two hours and to help me fill up the bath to get some relief. We lit up some candles but honestly I was so deep in the experience trying to breath through each surge that was coming more and more often. So around 3:30 am we called our amazing doula Heidi and when she heard me and times of my surges she said she is in her way with birthing pool too. She arrived before 4:30 am and I was so thankful to have her. She calmed me down, massaged me and reassured me I can do this. Not to even mention my husband Christopher who didn't move from my side, didn't eat for those 12 hrs, was feeding me dates and peanut butter and was giving me coconut water. When Heidi prepped the pool I went in feeling a little bit relief but wondering how much longer this can last

If you've recently chatted with a well-informed liberal – the kind who reads the NY Times or watches PBS NewsHour – you've heard encouraging things about the economy. You've heard that Biden's doing a good job. Unemployment has gone down, wages have gone up. Why can't you be happy about it all?To celebrate all this good news, we brought back our friend, Yeva Nersisyan, associate professor of economics at Franklin and Marshall College, research scholar at the Levy Institute, and frequent collaborator with MMT OG Randy Wray.Yes, unemployment rates are lower, but we know those numbers don't tell the true story. Or have you already forgotten our episode with Pavlina, just two short weeks ago? Yes, wages have gone up. But so has inflation. And in the race between inflation and wages, inflation is winning. Speaking of which, our Macro N Cheese family knows that one thing worse than inflation is the Fed's cure for it.In this episode, Steve and Yeva look at the disconnect between the ongoing immiseration of the working class and the rosy scenario painted by politicians, pundits, and economists. At least one of those groups should know better. They discuss the looming student debt crisis, and the effect of the Fed's interest rate hikes on student loans. When discussing MMT-informed solutions, Yeva warns:“You have to be consistent — whether it's the Trump tax cuts, whether it's the social security question. And you have to consistently say: the question of taxes and government spending, it should not be about deficits, should not be about debt, it should be about: is this the right thing for the economy? Is this what the people want? Is this what the people need? That's what you need to start with. And just because you want to raise taxes on the wealthy, which I do too, but I don't want to tie it to things like social security, because I think that's just a losing argument, and that's just not true.”MMT points toward answers, if anyone is asking.Yeva Nersisyan is an associate professor of economics at Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, PA, and a research scholar at the Levy Economics Institute of Bard College.

When economist Pavlina Tcherneva was last on this podcast, we were a few months into the pandemic. She and Steve talked about nationalizing payroll and the heightened need for a federal job guarantee during a time of crisis. In this episode, the neoliberal approach to unemployment comes under scrutiny. Pavlina explains the inadequacy of official unemployment data. She looks at the problem from several angles, including geography, demographics, and of course, economics.Pavlina and Steve discuss MMT, the politics of NAIRU, and the debt ceiling. They look at a job guarantee as an automatic stabilizer, similar to entitlements like social security and unemployment insurance, possibly shielding it from shifting political tides.Pavlina tells Steve about her collaboration with the Democratizing Work Initiative, a group of academics who are organizing around the principles of democratizing work, decommodifying labor, and decarbonizing the planet.Pavlina Tcherneva is an Associate Professor of Economics at Bard College, the Director of OSUN's Economic Democracy Initiative, and a Research Scholar at the Levy Economics Institute, NY.
