Molecular biologist Judith Frydman studies the nuances of protein folding and how defects in the process lead to neurodegenerative diseases. Her team studies protein folding in human cells and in model organisms, like yeast and worms, to understand the molecular events that precipitate harmful protein defects in humans. In one example, Frydman's team explored how aging affects the creation and the quality of proteins in the brain, leading to cognitive problems. She is now looking to develop therapies – someday perhaps leading to cures – to debilitating diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Huntington's, ALS, and others. Clients of molecular chaperones depend on an intracellular network of chaperones and co-chaperones to maintain stability. Mutations of tumor suppressors that disrupt proper chaperoning prevent the cell from maintaining sufficient protein levels for physiological function. BUFFALO, NY- October 16, 2024 – A new #review was #published in Oncotarget's Volume 15 on October 1, 2024, entitled, “Molecular chaperones: Guardians of tumor suppressor stability and function.” As highlighted in the abstract of this paper, "tumor suppressor" describes a diverse set of genes typically involved in suppressing metastasis, but which can lead to tumorigenesis when loss-of-function mutations occur. Despite the varied structures and functions of tumor suppressor proteins, many share a common regulatory mechanism—they are "clients" of molecular chaperones, and they rely on an intracellular network of chaperones and co-chaperones to maintain their stability. Mutations in tumor suppressors that disrupt proper chaperoning prevent cells from maintaining sufficient protein levels for normal physiological function. In their review, researchers Jennifer A. Heritz, Sarah J. Backe, and Mehdi Mollapour from SUNY Upstate Medical University and New York VA Health Care in Syracuse, New York, discuss the role of molecular chaperones Hsp70 and Hsp90 in maintaining the stability and functional integrity of tumor suppressors. Co-hosted by KIDS CARE and the Cobb County Police Department, the event collected donations from precincts, headquarters, and local businesses. Over 350 backpacks were packed and distributed to nonprofits like Communities in Schools and Simple Needs Georgia. This effort, spearheaded by KIDS CARE, aims to instill kindness and service in volunteers of all ages, emphasizing community support and educational empowerment through practical donations. Many of us watched on TV when Newfoundland and Labrador's Unknown Soldier was laid to rest at the National War Memorial in St. John's on July 1. But for a group of young students from this province, the sacrifices of men who died more than a hundred years ago are personal. They're among a group following the Trail of the Caribou this week. Jo Anne Broders is an English and social studies teacher at Smallwood Academy in Gambo. Griffin Neal is a Grade Eight student from that school., and Joelle Moss is in Grade Eight at Xavier Junior high in Deer Lake. We reached them by phone from Belgium.
