Study Guide Sanhedrin 57 This week's learning is sponsored by Efrat Avraham for the refuah shleima of a very brave soldier, Itamar Avraham ben Merav. A braita from the school of Menashe taught a different version of the seven Noahide laws, replacing the establishment of courts and cursing God with the prohibitions of castration and forbidden mixtures (kilayim). From what verses in the Torah are these seven laws derived? A debate follows between Rav Yosef and Rav Sheshet, who share a tradition from Rav that not all Noahide laws carry the death penalty. They disagree on the number - either three or four are capital offenses. Contrasting this, Rav Yehuda and Rav Huna cite Rav as saying all Noahide laws are punishable by death. The Gemara raises a challenge from a braita about theft, but resolves it. This braita discusses legal distinctions between cases of gentiles stealing from other gentiles or Jews, and Jews stealing from gentiles. The braita mentions theft, the beautiful captive woman (eshet yefat toar), and "similar cases" - prompting questions about what cases are considered similar to theft and similar to the beautiful captive woman. The legal requirements for convicting a gentile are less stringent than those for convicting a Jewish person. A single judge can render the verdict, testimony from one witness is sufficient, even if the witness is related to the accused, and no formal warning is required beforehand. However, testimony from women is not accepted. Rabbi Yishmael holds that a gentile who strikes a pregnant woman causing fetal death is subject to capital punishment. What are the scriptural sources of these legal principles? There are two different verses used to establish that forbidden sexual relations are included in the Noahide laws, and the Gemara explains why two separate sources are necessary, as there are some cases where a Noahide will be judged according to Jewish law.

Did you know that 95% of women taking a prenatal are still nutrient deficient? The founders of Needed saw this as a big problem and I couldn't agree more! But Needed quickly became a bigger solution to a bigger problem by providing more options for moms and moms to be. Women need so much support during the time from thinking about getting pregnant all the way to having little ones and so often they are left with options that don't address their needs (prenatals that have nutrients in the wrong forms or that they can't take due to nausea) or they are left with low energy, anxiety or even colds/flus while they are pregnant or nursing because there aren't natural products that are considered safe during these times. Needed solved all of these problems as well as created a community of no-guilt, education and support for new moms and moms to be. And could the answer to implementing AI responsibly lie in the use of another popular technology, Blockchain? Dr. Merav Ozair, a global leading expert on emerging technologies, argues yes. “The situation was that I went with my husband Danny, who is also a clinical psychologist, and we were on the team that came and told people when family members were identified and that they had been murdered. There was one time when we went to two kids, telling them that their parents were murdered. We were with them in the room with an aunt and another family member. All of a sudden, I said, “Danny's father and my father were in the Holocaust, and they also lost their parents. And you know they became happy people and good fathers for us. And here we are with you now.” It was like my telling a lullaby - I knew that they hear us and they don't hear us, but I believed that the unconscious can hear me. That's how my personal transgenerational story helped me to help them to believe that a life can become after this disaster.” M.R. “And the music in your saying whatever you said was part of what worked there, both the liveliness and something that has a real connection to experiences one can survive from. This is a very unusual kind of intervention for psychoanalysts, and also that it may not fit everyone. There is a match between how can one make use of oneself and go out of one's skin and one's routines, i.e. the way I always do whatever I do. Instead,to do something different that is echoing the needs of the person with whom you are in contact.” M.E-G. Episode Description: We begin by tracing the recent history of those organizations that are dedicated to the premeditated butchery of civilians. Both Merav and Mira share with us their experiences when the sirens went off on Saturday morning October 7th. We follow them as they attend to those who physically survived the mutilation, murder and kidnapping of their family members. Merav, building from her personal family Holocaust history, created a series of guidelines with which to engage those who were overwhelmed. It became a sort of proactive psychoanalytic manual to give structure to and help regain the alpha function of those who are suffering while also recognizing the presence of past traumas in their lives. They share with us their personal experiences, the crucial importance of President Biden's speech and visit, and the vital assistance that all the Israeli psychoanalytic organizations are providing. Central to their personal and professional message is We have survived traumas in the past, and we will survive again this time. Earlier this month, Israel marked its 75th birthday amid one of the biggest crises of democracy the country has ever experienced. Since returning to power in December last year, prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has introduced a set of controversial judicial reforms, resulting in mass protests on the streets of Tel Aviv and beyond. This week, Mark Leonard welcomes member of the Knesset and leader of the Israeli Labor Party, Merav Michaeli, to discuss what is at stake with these reforms and how they could affect the country's global standing. What is behind the waning influence of the left in Israel over the past 20 years? What can be done to reinvigorate the peace process with the Palestinians? And what might the next 75 years have in store for the Israel? This podcast was recorded on 23 May 2023. Bookshelf: The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton

Israel celebrated its 75th birthday in the midst of one of the biggest crises of democracy that the country has ever experienced and one of the most energetic protest movements in its history. In this episode, recorded live at the Marlene Meyerson JCC in Manhattan on Yom Ha'atzmaut, Yehuda Kurtzer is joined by Knesset member Merav Michaeli, the head of the Israeli Labor Party. They engage in a conversation about the current moment in Israel, the ethics of political compromise, and the past and future of the Israeli left. Can liberals reclaim the language and narratives of Zionist thought and history that have been co-opted by the far right? What is the role of American Jews in bringing about an Israel we can be proud of? And is there something in the air in Israel these recent weeks that might hint toward an affirmative vision for Israeli liberal democracy?
Hey everybody! Episode 101 of the show is out. This was an interview that my friend Angell Deer did for his podcast, The Sanctuary, also the name of his shamanic healing center in upstate New York where my colleague Merav Artzi and myself have been running retreats the last two years. In this interview, Angell interviews Merav and myself on our background stories, our work with tobacco and tree medicines, the process of working with plants in a dieta, what the benefits of this work are, and how the process unfolds on the physical, emotional, and spiritual levels. It was really nice to be able to share our work and shed some light on this unique process. Angell did a great job with the interview and I hope you all will find this valuable in learning more about plant medicines, the dieta, and tobacco and trees as medicine. As a healer, I work with patients suffering from hormonal imbalance, anxiety, depression, addictions, trauma, and more. IN THIS EPISODE OF THE HUMAN UPGRADE™...…you'll learn about the critical role metabolism plays in your body's energy and performance. Important new science findings about human metabolic health shows how you can change your metabolism. To help you make these changes, this episode gives you practical tips and tools for measuring your metabolism and ways to manage it effectively.Guest Michal Mor, Ph.D., co-founded Lumen with her twin sister, Merav Mor, Ph.D., and three long-time entrepreneur friends nearly a decade ago. As Chief of Metabolic Health & Science, Michal's background includes degree studies in Medical Laboratory Sciences and Physiology with an emphasis on cardiac arrhythmia. The Lumen founders set out to close the gap of what existed in the science and something people could actually use to manage their metabolic health. Both Michal and her twin, Merav, were multiple-year Ironman participants. Athletic performance—and how to improve it—influenced their work with metabolism. Four years of research and development plus more years of validation studies and beta test users went into developing Lumen. Lumen is a hand-held device that accurately measures your metabolism through the breath. It uses a CO2 sensor and flow meter to measure the CO2 concentration in your breath, indicating if your body is in carb or fat burn.“So, this ability to shift between them, it's not only good for athletic performance it's also improving our quality of life,” Michal says. “It enables us to enjoy life to our fullest potential. It's about longevity. It's about being able to achieve our goals, not having those mood swings. This is so much more than improving athletic performance.”Lumen has accumulated a metabolic measurement database with over 20m measurements. These insights have shown how lifestyle habits affect metabolism and the body more than previously thought possible. Listen on to learn how with just one breath in the morning, you can set your metabolism course for the day and then monitor it throughout the day.SPECIAL OFFER FOR THE HUMAN UPGRADE LISTENERS: https://lumen.me, use code Asprey50 to get $50 off a Lumen deviceWE APPRECIATE OUR PARTNERS. Hey everybody! Episode 88 of the show is out. In this episode, I spoke with Alumnis (Alejandra Ortiz). She had been highly recommended to me by a good friend and then recently someone who was dieting with Merav and myself also highly recommended her. Alumnis was also doing a retreat right next door and so it seemed serendipitous. Alumnis is a Colombian teacher who works with the voice. We had a really fascinating conversation about the power of the voice, how it can be opened and truly found, its healing effects, the power of the word, and we touched a bit on plant medicines as well, especially as the voice and song are often an integral part of many traditions. I really enjoyed this conversation and Alumnis really has a beautiful presence and wisdom that she shares from her own journey and work with others. It was a pleasure for me to sit down with her and I hope one day to sit down with her again and learn more from her. I trust you all will find this episode illuminating.
