Emily Franc is the Vice President of Development & Philanthropy at Potomac Riverkeeper Network. Freshwater mussels like Eastern Lampmussel, and Alewife floaters are among 16 species native to the Potomac River and its Maryland tributaries, and they once existed in the millions, similar to the oyster populations in the Chesapeake Bay. Like oysters, mussels are effective at removing nutrients and toxins, filtering out sediments and improving water quality. The mussels population in the Potomac has suffered due to climate change, increased urbanization, and stormwater erosion. Scientific opinion is unanimous that mussel recovery is an important part of improving the water quality in the Chesapeake Bay; both Maryland and Virginia's departments of environment have expanded their commitment to the recovery of mussel populations. With Emily we talk about the history and significance of the Potomac River, why mussels are a vital part of our ecosystem, why we've seen a decrease in them, their mussel restoration work, and how we can support this work. From James Beard Award nominations to laudatory write-ups in national media like Southern Living and Bon Appetit, Lee Gregory has established himself on the Mount Rushmore of Richmond's decade-long restaurant renaissance. Right now, Gregory is in the fight of his professional life as he works to keep his two Richmond restaurants, Alewife and Southbound, open for take-out while the COVID-19 pandemic has closed dining rooms across the country. Weeks before coronavirus wreaked havoc on the restaurant industry, Gregory sat down with Scott and Robey to discuss his rise in Richmond restaurants, his philosophy as a chef/restaurateur, and why it's so dang hard to run a restaurant -- even on the good days. We hope this slice of life before the virus closed many Richmond restaurants provides a brief respite from current events. His interview begins around the 22:00 mark. Of course, we cannot ignore what's happening in our community right now. That's why we invited Jack Berry, President at Richmond Region Tourism, to the podcast. Berry explains what his office is doing to help support the restaurant industry and how his planning ahead for what will undoubtedly be an unusual summer travel season. Since Scott and Robey are socially distancing, most of this podcast was recorded via Zoom. The Lee Gregory interview was conducted in January 2020. Alewife Southbound Richmond Region Tourism

Note: This podcast was originally broadcast on Commonwealth Magazine's CodcastFred Salvucci, one of the state's most influential transportation officials, traces the decline of the MBTA to the early years of the administration of former governor William Weld.Salvucci, who served 12 years as secretary of transportation under former governor Michael Dukakis and now teaches at MIT, said support for transit gained momentum after former governor Frank Sargent in the early 1970s brought a halt to new highway construction inside Route 128. Under Dukakis, Salvucci said, transportation officials turned their focus to extending the Red Line to Alewife, expanding the Orange Line, and burying the expressway through downtown, a project that came to be known as the Big Dig.Throughout the 1980s, according to Salvucci, the MBTA built complicated transit projects and managed the system well. He said the successes were important. “If we had just succeeded in stopping bad things and not succeeded in getting some good things built, the bad things would have just come back,” Salvucci said during a Codcast hosted by Josh Fairchild and Jim Aloisi of TransitMatters.

To misquote the poet Emily Dickinson, something there is that loves a line. When I was growing up in the 80s in Dorchester, near Ashmont station on the red line, I remember the fights in the press about extending the red line all the way to Alewife from Harvard Station, where it ended at the time. Some residents of Arlington, it seemed, wanted the red line kept out so that some other, less visible lines would kept firmly IN. They expressed concern that poor blacks from Dot were going to get on the T at Shawmut or Field's Corner, and ride in air-conditioned comfort all the way to Alewife, for the express purpose of burgling their homes. Presumably, then, the would-be burglars would take a cab back to Dot with all their booty.

He arrives at last to the sea on the edge of the world where he meets Siduri, the Alewife, who keeps a tavern for travelers, and she directs him to the boatman who must take him to Ut-napishtim, the one man who not yet died.***The image, a clay impression from an ancient Sumerian cylinder, is of sun god Shamash, bestriding the cleft of the mountain Mashu, featuredbetween the twin pillars which hold up the sky. ***Music excerpt is “Kish” from the album The Forest by David Byrne
