Where do new ideas come from? What is the genesis of those masterpieces that have redefined Modernity? At the beginning of the 20th century, a revolutionary artistic movement emerged, with the ambition of changing everything. This movement was Art Deco. A new style, with clean, pure lines that owes its name to an event with global repercussions, held in Paris in 1925: The International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts.At the heart of this avant-garde event, and amongst the jewels that were awarded the Grand Prix, was a bracelet. Its name: Fleurs enlacées, roses rouges et blanches or “Entwined Flowers, Red and White Roses”. Signed Van Cleef & Arpels, this bracelet was the perfect combination of tradition and Modernity.Voice of Jewels, a podcast from L'ÉCOLE, School of Jewelry Arts supported by Van Cleef & Arpels. Jeff O'Neil, founder of Industrial Arts Brewing Company in the Hudson Valley is back for part two of sustainable brewing practices. In our last show "From Grain to Bottle" (air date 3/25/22) Jeff shared how malt production has changed throughout the years in the Hudson Valley and we began to discuss water conservation at Industrial Arts. For this episode, Jeff explains the sustainable practices they have implemented in their new facility in Beacon, NY based on techniques from their original location. He talks through the finer points of recycling heat from their glycol chiller, using a nitrogen generator, and vapor distilling. We also dive into hop production in New York and how local products can help with a carbon footprint. There are many hop options now, or as Jeff puts it "tools in their toolbox" that allow brewers to layer flavors. From wet hops, dried flowers, pellets, and even hop extracts, Jeff explain how each can be useful and their impact on the environment. We are looking forward to a part three episode with Jeff soon! Shoutouts: Hudson Valley Beer, Finger Lakes Beer, Pederson Farms (Seneca Castle, NY)

"A few months ago I was visiting Industrial Arts, a brewery in New York's Hudson valley to record a few episodes of Steal This Beer. Jeff O'Neil, the brewery's founder and brewmaster, was walking us through his impressive 100 hectolitre system and sharing a sneak peak of some non-alcoholic beers he was working on.  This week those beverages are hitting the marketplace so it seemed fitting to have him on this show to talk about the evolution and process.  And we'll get to that, but first we'll go into that brewery system and he'll illustrate how it has been constructed to benefit his IPAs, which are some of the very best being made in America right now, and how that even extends into the fields.  He's a member of the hop quality group, and spent time in Germany this year around harvest, and shares his observations and insights from walking those farms.  Jeff, as you'll hear, is a thoughtful brewer. His career has spanned more than 20 years and he worked at a number of breweries on both coasts before opening Industrial Arts six years ago.  From where it was at the start to where it is now is impressive to hear and before we got started with the recording he said he doesn't spend too much time brewing these days, but rather stands on the brew deck and points and tells stories.  And that's where we start, with an extended index finger and this tale of modern engineering."-John Holl This Episode is Sponsored By:Pro BrewerWe bring original articles to ProBrewer.com twice a week covering issues important to the beer industry and aimed at helping breweries of all sizes understand different facets of the business.  Check out our articles on ProBrewer.com every Tuesday and Thursday and visit the site daily for other original content and to stay connected with the beer industry. For more Drink Beer, Think Beer check out All About Beer. We learned things that became useful, lifelong skills. Today…not so much! The teachers and classes have disappeared from being a part of the school day, and eventually, from importance to today's generations. Kids are being taught that a college education is paramount, and you should get one, even if the costs of it puts you into debt for 10 to 20 years.Have the skilled trades been rejected by the kids and young adults of today, and been replaced with career thoughts of video game creation and computer programming? Maybe. That's not so good…at least in my opinion. To fix it,   all of us really should pay attention to the next several minutes of this podcast because these things affect your life, the well-being of your companies, communities,  and families. One of my favorite radio personalities , Dave Ramsey, tongue-in-cheek--often speaks of such degrees as German Polka History—implying that there are virtually no jobs to go along with those degrees. He's right! Debt stacks up. And for what purpose?Another of my favorite radio/TV/podcast personalities is Mike Rowe, the star of the old—and NEW--series, “Dirty Jobs”, and the voice of shows like “Deadliest Catch”. Mike is a big proponent on the value of the skilled trades. In fact, he puts his money where his mouth is, with the Mike Rowe Works Foundation, offering training scholarships for blue collar jobs like welding to  automotive…to   you name it. This year he is awarding over one million dollars in scholarships to … WAIT FOR IT… trade schools! A kid can learn an extremely, well-paying skill in a short amount of time—no college debt. Never get laid off.  Mike's biggest challenge is finding students willing to get their hands dirty and put in an honest day of hard work. The reason for this explanation of mine has everything to do with why I am so excited to have on the show today Tim Carter. For many years, Tim had the call-in radio show,  ASK THE BUILDER! And this has EVERYTHING TO DO WITH YOU! Here's why:People…homeowners…would call Tim and ask him how to do certain remodeling tasks  and  jobs  around the house. Why did they call Tim? Because they have failed to learn those skills earlier in their lives, such as in school. There is a market out there for installing those improvements, repairing broken irrigation systems, mending fences; generally creating--and completing for pay-- those projects wanted by people unskilled in the physical trades.I asked Tim if he might speak about the demand and the markets and types of projects homeowners have asked him about, or asked him to perform for them.Seems like almost every guy I know in the trades has either thought about doing side work, or is doing side work, or is thinking about starting a business for himself. Tim is just the guy who can shed some light on this.Hey, everybody, “Coach Gary” here. Thanks for indulging me in my rant. Fortunately,  I have a guest today you've just got to meet…and I believe he can help guide us through the problems mentioned in that rant, and talk about solutions.Tim grew up with the trades. Was a master plumber, a general contractor, specialized in ultra-custom remodeling. He flipped houses before “Flip this House” was even cool! He knows an awful lot about the market many would-be handymen or contractors are considering. Enough talk on my part. Help me to welcome Tim Carter, “Mr.   ASK THE BUILDER” to the Brick and Block Podcast. Episode 317 - Tommy Keegan Tribute with Interboro, Newburgh, and Industrial Arts via https://mfgtec.org/keegan-ales/ Happy Monday, Thieves! We’re paying tribute to a local legend this week. Tommy Keegan of Kingston, NY’s Keegan Ales unexpectedly died of heart attack on April 30 and we wanted to reflect on his legacy in the craft beer community in the greater NYC and Hudson Valley region. Tommy was one of a kind, a true open-hearted person who touched nearly everyone he encountered. We’re joined by Jesse Ferguson of Interboro, Geoff Wenzel of Industrial Arts, and Paul Halayko of Newburgh Brewing. Jesse and Augie reminisce about Tommy dropping by Carton in the early days, Paul tells us about Tommy reaching out when Newburgh was getting up and running, and Geoff talks about what it was like working for Tommy in the early days (when Geoff was legally too young to even drink the beer he was helping brew). We talk about our experiences with and the influence of Tommy’s Mother’s Milk and Hurricane Kitty and why those beers were some of the most formative early drinking experiences for us. It was a melancholic stroll down memory lane and we hope you enjoy our tribute. Let us know if you have any you would like to share yourselves.***As always, you can email your questions, complaints, whimpers, or whines to us at stealthisbeerpodcast@gmail.com. Dr. Sammons grew up in Wattsburg, Pennsylvania and attended California and State Teachers College in  California, Pennsylvania to study Industrial Arts.  Upon graduating, he moved to a small town in WV to teach mechanical drawing to high school students. After serving in the Korean war, he attended Richmond Professional Institute which is now called VCU and received his certificate in Occupational Therapy. Shortly thereafter he started his OT career by finding employment as the chief director of OT at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago and worked there for about 5 years practicing rehabilitation and completing research in prosthetics.  During this time he also joined staff at the amputee clinic in Northwestern University, and later received an honorary doctorate in 1983 from WMU to recognize the many contributions he has made to the field of OT. Dr. Sammons is the creator of the button aid, a self-care aid that we call adaptive equipment in the field, that was and still is used today for self-care dressing tasks. Dr. Sammons created his own company called Button King Inc. after showcasing the button aid at conferences like AOTA and seeing its utility and popularity.  This product became mass produced and laid the framework for an entrepreneurial career in assistive technology and research.  The company has evolved over the years and is now called Performance Health; a company that catalogues around 2,500 products. Over the years, Dr. Sammons has won numerous awards, advocated for the OT profession both internationally and domestically, and was recently named one of the top 100 Influential People of Occupational Therapy by AOTA.  He also has made numerous charitable donations to VCU and other universities and organizations.   An archive was recently made and can be viewed at the following link: https://fredsammons.org/about/about-fs (https://fredsammons.org/about/about-fs) Hosted by: Alexander Leary Connolly, OTS Occupational Therapy Doctorate Program Virginia Commonwealth University

Episode 133 : The Cup Spilleth Over Welcome to a filler episode! Nick, Jake and Alex are back and bringing our complaints and random conversations to you! We started off with the beers we're drinking this week since all of us are drinking! Opening topics include video games, Jake's butt chin, and TikTok. Nick breaks down why shipping beer to PA is stupid and he rages about term limits and alcohol laws. We talk about shipping and getting beer outside of your local market and what local breweries are doing to get their product out there in the current environment. Jake shifts to our conversation to Groundhog's Day and Punxy Phil and asks us what beer we'd drink with Phil the Groundhog. We learned a lot about groundhogs during this conversation. Jake keeps us on track with another segment and wants to know what spring beers we're looking forward to in the coming months. We then shift to a discussion on lagers and crispybois. In stark comparison, Nick talks a lot about Cellarworks' Puff'd beer. This throws us into a glassware conversation and pirate podcasting at Industrial Arts. We unveil our new rating system for beers. To round out the episode we talk about beer abuse and the wild things instagrammers do to beer to get the perfect shot for the ‘gram. Episode 259 - 5th Anniversary Show with Jeff O'Neil, Industrial Arts Brewing (COVID-19 Quarantine edition) Happy Anniversary Thieves! This isn't a joke episode. It's an actual anniversary show. Five years ago we launched this podcast with an idea to have a weekly conversation about beer, over beer, among friends that think about beer way too much. Our first home was Barcade in Jersey City and on show number one we had Jeff "Chief" O'Neill on to talk about a brewery he was getting ready to launch. Each year for our anniversary since he's come on to talk about how the brewery, Industrial Arts, has grown, to troll Holl with Orval, and to give Augie a little pushback. We wanted to do this show with you all as part of a live recording but had to postpone that for the obvious reasons. Instead we jumped on the phone for chat with cheif, opened some bottles from our cellar, and otherwise had a good time. And here it is, a bonus episode for you this week to help pass the hours in quarantine. Thanks for the support, the great laughs, the letters, and the beers over these last five years. Jake introduces his Dream Breweries list. Hits include Hill Farmstead, Hudson Valley, Industrial Arts, Alchemist, etc. Jake's Beer: Very Green - Treehouse Brewery (8.3% DIPA) Nick and Alex went to the Pittsburgh Brewery Guide release party! Beer 1: I Seen The Light - Mango Helles Lager (Rock Bottom, Roundabout, Helicon) Kinda like a crafty version of IC Light Mango. Beer 2: Basileus - Basil Saison (Hop Farm, War Streets Brewery, Leaning Cask) Lots of basil flavor, dry and refreshing saison. Beer 3: Red Bines - Amber Ale (Dancing Gnome, Hofbrauhaus, Penn Brewery) Great drinking, solid red beer. Lots of malt flavor and well balanced. Beer 4: Open Sesame - Brown Session Ale (Spoonwood, Pittsburgh Bottleshop, Church BrewWorks) Possibly the best beer of the festival. Very dark color, but still extremely light and crushable. We loved this one Beer 5: Gluteus Minimus - Gluten-Free Tulsi Tea Saison (Aurochs, East End, Cinderlands) Alex was a huge fan. Lots of tea flavor and each brewery's style came through in this beer. Beer 6: Watermelon Farmhouse Ale - Blended Farmhouse Ale (Allegheny City, Strange Roots) Definitely had a lot of watermelon flavor but still sour. Beer 7: Milton the Toaster Style - Toaster Pastry Stout (Hitchhiker, Southern Tier, Rivertowne) This one was a great balance of stout and the smores pop tart flavor. Beer 8: Get Out of Tahn - Dry Hopped Norwegian Farmhouse Ale (Grist House, Cobblehaus, CoStar) More pronounced hop flavors but still had the farmhouse character. Dry and light drinking. Beer 9: El Collabo - Brett IPA (Couch, Abjuration, Eleventh Hour) We weren't too keen on this one, but we do appreciate the expansion of the style usage. The brett didn't really shine through in this one. Beer 10: A Mind Full of Weeds - Cream Ale made with Bloody Butcher Corn (Mindful, Full Pint) Very much a cream ale. As a late entry in the day we didn't really get the full effect. Studio Beer #1: Konkey Dong 4UP - Hoof Hearted Brewery (Quadruple Dry-Hopped Triple IPA 9.5%) Thanks Sean P! for the share! Sara didn't like a triple, surprise! Nick liked the beer, Alex found it to be easy to drink. From there the conversation went to the new releases we tried this week and beer trades that we'll have coming up. We're going to have a new segment called the brewery of the week, where we'll highlight a beer from them and focus on something outside of Pittsburgh. Shoutout to our social media follows! Follow Keygen (@djkb412) and The Brew Brotha (@thebrewbrotha) Jake will be in Pittsburgh this coming weekend! Beer #2: Spy Dolphin - Dancing Gnome (8.5% DIPA) We've had this one before, not much has changed, its a great brew. Tune in next week!

Jack founded Klahm and sons 43 years ago in Hawaii and moved the business to his current location in Florida. He has experienced a variety of opportunities to learn his craft. He began with forging steel, and 20 years later he entered into the aluminum and bronze world of forging.  He has been a member of NOMMA since 1978; and has done numerous demonstrations, and videotapes for education.  Over the course of being a NOMMA member Jack's business has received more than 100 awards, and they are a two-time Mitch Heitler award winner. What We Talked About Jack’s father was a high school Industrial Arts teacher and Jack learned a lot about the metal field through osmosis from his father. 1972 Jack and his parents created the business “Klahm and Sons”, first as a furniture business, then it eventually became a full-on metal blacksmith business making gates and doing large restoration commissions. His shop was 12 ft by 12 ft, with a hand shear, a railroad track for an anvil, oxy/acetylene set up and an AC buzz box. Jack has a family history of metalsmiths – his great grandfather was a blacksmith and grandfather was a stainless steel metal worker in Germany. His shop now had 3 other smiths working with him and they have been there for 10 years. Jack’s first restoration project was the Iolani Palace in Hawaii. The project was to bring back the original metal color on a half a mile of fencing, 4 driveway entrance gates and 8 pedestrian gates.  The second restoration project was the Royal Mausoleum in Hawaii, where all of the Hawaiian kings and Queens are buried. Jack’s family moved to Florida in 1985 and received another restoration project working on Samuel Yellin’s driveway gates at the National Historic Landmark of Vizcaya. His skills have all been self-taught. Growing up with dyslexia strengthened his perseverance to succeed, that paired with a high mechanical aptitude has grown his successful business. In 1992, Jack was commissioned by a client who didn’t want any rust to show up on the work for years to come, this is when Jack started to work primarily in Aluminum. Jack has learned over the years that the stories you can tell about your work. Projects and relationships with clients really sell your work for you. The ABANA 2016 Conference committee has asked Jack to be a demonstrator this summer. He will be giving demo’s on forging aluminum and bronze as well as a slideshow on Saturday showing his works over the past 43 years.  The demonstrations will have a metallurgical flair to them, talking about the different alloys of aluminum and bronze.  1992, in Asheville North Carolina, was Jack’s last ABANA demonstration, where he was the first person to demonstrate forging aluminum. Jack has been a member of the NOMMA organization for many years, this has given him the ability to teach many students who have gone on to win NOMMA awards. Jack has also made teaching videos for NOMMA on creating curved staircases. When asked if he could learn from any blacksmith for a day, dead or alive, who would that be – he said from the people who aren’t with us anymore, Bill Gichner, Ernest Wiemann.  He also mentioned Steve Swerzer, who lives close to Jack, Michael Bondi and Bob Bergman.   Guest Links Klahm and Sons Website - http://www.klahmandsons.com/ ABANA Demonstrator Link - http://www.abana.org/Conferences/2016/contents/en-us/d16_Jack_Klahm.html A Big Thank You to today’s sponsor – ABANA 2016 Conference, http://www.abana.org/Conferences/2016/index.html If you enjoyed this episode, I would love it if you would support the show by: telling your friends. sharing this episode using the social sharing buttons below. subscribing to the show and leaving a rating and review in iTunes.  Not sure how?  Just follow these simple steps here or watch the short video tutorial, http://youtu.be/rq4OCyRGjHc?list=UUH3MfNZLXlKgionAs6kMT_Q subscribing to the show in Stitcher, http://www.stitcher.com/s?fid=54499&refid=stpr Thanks so much for your support!

On this edition of Galaxy Moonbeam Night Site, Mike and Smitty recall their days in Junior High and High School, when they took shop classes. For most boys, taking a shop class was a welcome break from the academic part of school. The ability to go to one of the shops, be it wood, metal, electric, graphic arts, or auto shop, and get our hands dirty and create something or repair a radio, print a poster, or tune up an engine gave us a whole new experience in education. Working with our hands, learning to use tools, and learning new skills stayed with us and we relied on a lot of those early experiences the remainder of our lives. We also remember the angst of being afraid of welders, metal cutters, and tools that we were sure we would hurt ourselves with. In spite of this, we learned and benefitted from the Industrial Arts programs that were available in those days. Join us as we recall fun school memories on Galaxy Moonbeam Night Site, on the Galaxy Nostalgia Network!
