Summer is winding down here in Oregon. Looking forward to some slightly cooler weather. What isn't cooling off is the inspiration we are serving up this week. Amy starts us off with how garbage and waste can be used to make useful items and even beautiful art. Teresa takes us on a swim-bike-run adventure with the Iron Nun who has completed over 40 Iron Man events and is still doing triathlons at 92 with few signs of slowing down. And finally, Teresa talks about some high-tech and some very low-tech ways people are making the world better with seeds. What an honour to speak to the wonderful Sister Madonna Buder, the Iron Nun and legendary coach Joe Friel for this episode. Sister Madonna is 91 years old and is the oldest woman to have ever completed an Ironman triathlon, at the age of 82 in 2012. She has starred in a Nike ad, she has inspired thousands of people and really demonstrated what you can achieve no matter your age. While Joe Friel started coaching in 1980 and has coached thousands of elites and age group athletes. I'm grateful that my life means something to somebody, it gives me a reason to keep me keeping on. 30:30 What happened when Sister Madonna Buder first started to run "I created a sense of jealousy, it was a struggle I have to admit, but I believed if I had the permission of the Bishop, I could carry on." 32:35 We talk about some of the parallels between sport and religion and why Sister Madonna Buder feels that if you have a gift, you should use it. 42:55 How Sister Madonna found it competing in triathlon, which can be a very expensive and materialistic sport 45:00 A special message to Sister Madonna from Chrissie Wellington 'she is the inspiration for Ironman if there ever was one and I love her dearly' Sister Madonna says of Chrissie Wellington. 51:15 Start of Joe Friel's interview 52:35 Joe talks about the factors athletes in their 50s should take into account when it comes to racing and training 55:30 How training might look as you get into your 60s '5/2, so 5 very easy days and 2 days of hard workouts. The 5 days a week might seem boring, but they are not wasting your time. And the 2 days a week you should be dreading as they are so hard.' 58:00 We talk about the importance of recovery 'you just don't bounce back like you used to as you get older' 1:01:00 Why strength training is absolutely key as you get older 1:03:30 How you can get your head around the mental challenge of slowing down. Joe suggests comparing workouts year on year. 1:06:00 Some tips if you want to do an Ironman for a milestone birthday 1:09:10 Why consistency and sleep are the most important elements of training Find out more about this week's guests Sister Madonna Buder https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ZA8eWjIYCU (Nike advert) Joe Friel https://joefrieltraining.com/ (website) Joe Friel https://joefrieltraining.com/book/fast-after-50/ (Fast at 50) book Like what you heard? Aging is Life’s Most Valuable Trophy! Sister Madonna “The Iron Nun” Buder has found the key to the connection of mind, body and spirit, which allows her keep going. Join us in Celebrating Sister Madonna Buder’s 90th Birthday by reflecting on highlights from our interview with her last year!
Florence Henderson was one of America's most beloved TV mom. She died in 2016 at the age of 82, but before her death, we were thrilled to host her on Growing Bolder Radio. In our conversation, she revealed why she was enjoying her career in her late 70s as much -- if not more than -- her career in the '70s. She explained how she combatted ageism and why setting goals is so essential.
This week, Alyssa and Haley talk to the "Unsinkable" Molly Hayes about her long history in triathlon racing around the globe. Molly started racing in her 50's and is still going strong 30 years and 333 races later. Molly shares tales from racing in Iran, winning her age group at the ITU World Championship, and battling her fierce competitor the Iron Nun. Plus, how she manages traveling, balancing life with triathlon, and her tips for a speedy transition. Also, Alyssa and Haley answer mailbag questions that they may or may not be qualified to answer about nutrition, intermittent fasting, and elite qualifying standards. **CONTEST ALERT: Win a YEAR'S SUPPLY of Nuun and a 1-on-1 consult with Dr. Stacy Sims!** ->Enter at livefeisty.nuunlife.com/

What we cover: When you’re set to have tea with an 86-year-old nun, it’s a good idea to have things like cream, sugar, and perhaps crustless cucumber sandwiches on-hand. But of course, I did not. (#EpicFail) However, Sister Madonna Buder is not your typical 86-year-old nun. Dubbed the Iron Nun – as depicted in the recent Nike commercial that debuted during the 2016 Olympic Games – this force of nature has completed over 45 Ironman events, countless marathons, and more than 400 triathlons. As active and as energetic as any athlete a quarter her age, Sister Madonna chats with me about defying age, trying new things, and recalls with tremendous emotion the special relationship she shared with her grandparents as a young girl, and how she risked it all with her decision to join the convent. All told, this is a conversation that reveals the woman behind the legend; she’s likeable, endearing, engaging, and without a doubt, inspiring. #UnlimitedYouth
