Welcome to another exciting and informative episode of the Data Gurus podcast! Sima is happy to have James Norman, the CEO and Founder of Pilotly, joining her today. In this episode, James talks about his varied career and highlights the difficulties he experienced as a person of color, raising investment capital. He also discusses his initiatives to help black founders raise money for their businesses and explains how Pilotly came about and why Pilotly is such an important company for the United States. James's career trajectory James started his career selling video games. After that, he spent some time selling car audio and then started his first “real” company, MJH Sound.com, in 1995 and sold car audio online. After running that business for about four years, James went to the University of Michigan and got a degree in electrical engineering. Pivoting James's audio business pivoted during that time, and they started creating custom parts and building unique cars for vehicle manufacturers. Custom cars for movies Then, in 2005, James moved to LA and started building custom cars for movies like The Fast and the Furious. Video streaming In 2008, when the recession hit, James got into streaming video. After encountering several challenges, he realized that most people could not do what he was doing. So he shifted away from the failing auto industry and seized the opportunity to create a streamlined video streaming product. A product planner James also spent some time working as a product planner for Mitsubishi and then went back to doing his own thing. New ways of raising money When his friend started Dropbox, it opened James's eyes to new ways of raising money for companies. Before that, he had no idea of what it would take to get enough capital together to scale a team and build an organization. Ubi James built Ubi, the first online electronic programming guide, and spent his time between 2008 and 2013 doing his best to convince people that nobody would have cable by 2020. Getting feedback from some high-level executives who shared his point of view encouraged James to keep on with what he was doing. He spent the next five or six years running Ubi and ran into many different problems during that time. Becoming a shining star In 2011, James applied for the NewMe program, designed to help people of color break into Silicon Valley. He got into the program, and that was his introduction to the San Francisco Bay Area. He was blown away by all the opportunities there, so he decided to stay on and become a shining star! Software development James spent a year working as a software developer for a publishing company and learned a lot about software structure. He also learned how toxic the development environment was because of people's unconscious bias towards black people. Communication James learned that as a CEO, you need to communicate effectively. No investment capital After putting a rock star team together, James started pitching his ideas to potential investors. Some investors told him that if he could get the content contracts they would give him the money he needed. Even though he managed to get several content contracts for an electronic sell-through model he developed for a subscription TV service, including one from Warner Brothers, nobody ever showed up with any investment capital. Testing content and starting Pilotly James learned the necessary processes from experienced experts and started Pilotly because he needed to test pilot his content effectively with the right audience. Creating a program for investment James and his team knew all the right people, but nobody wanted to give them any funding. So they created a program to put the best people of color in front of potential investors and decided to call the investors out if they were still not willing to give them any funding after that. [00:42] Happy Market Research Podcast. My guest today is James Norman, the founder, CEO of Pilot.ly? [00:48] Yep. [00:48] Yep. We are live at IIeX in Austin, Day 2. When did you get in? [00:55] Yesterday morning. [00:56] So, you’ve been here for the whole conference. Any standout moments for you? [01:00] Not quite yet. I’ve just been getting calibrated. I went into a couple workshops, and I thought they were pretty interactive. So, that was cool to be able to like jump in our people’s platforms and kind of walk through the demo with them. So, I think that’s definitely something different than what I’ve seen in other places. I’ve just been running into people; run into you, which is cool. [01:20] Thank you. It’s an honor to run into you as well. We’ve had a couple of phone conversations. And I knew what you looked like on LinkedIn, but like context is really weird. And so.. [01:28] Right. I’m probably much larger than maybe you thought. [01:31] You are, you’re a tall guy. We introduced... I can’t remember if you came up to me or vice versa, but you said, “I’m James.” And it was just like funny little moment where it took me, I don’t know, a minute. “Oh, you’re James.” It’s just funny. Tell me about Pilot.ly. [01:49] I mean Pilot.ly is all about understanding the audience and using that understanding to make better business decisions. And so, it all kind of started back when I learned about the traditional process of understanding content. Similar processes were being used to understand products and audio and whatever else. But video is so much more complex. And so, I thought the things that people were doing and the things they say to me about what they do were very applicable when they came up with those processes. If you were to be back in the 80s and you said, “Hey, I need to understand this promo or this TV show.” It would be a viable idea to put 30 people in a room or 20 people in a room and have a conversation. But the lead time in doing something like that, the cost of something like that, the lack of ability to potentially do it at a rapid pace to get the actual audience you need to hear from, that process doesn’t make as much sense anymore. And in today’s modern time, people are used to responding to things online and giving feedback. And so, you can actually with the right user experience get a pretty robust point of response from a consumer or your audience. [03:02] And we’re consuming video at a rapid... and it’s increasing too. Not only is it the Number 1, it’s also the volume by which we’re consuming it is much greater as well. So, people are getting a little more comfortable with communicating through video and then also they’re getting more comfortable with seeing it as truth like it’s a surrogate for an in-person conversation. [03:22] Exactly. [03:22] So, are you dealing with recorded snippets or are you dealing with more conversational like real-time video? [03:32] For us, the only way that we deal with actual people’s faces is we’re integrating a Voxpopme ...

Dr. Daniel Ruan Surgeon discussing, “One of the Most Undiagnosed Deadly Diseases." Only “fixed” by a 20-minute surgical procedure. It is too often undiagnosed and missed, even by well-intentioned doctors. This disease is primary hyperparathyroidism. Common symptoms of primary hyperparathyroidism are: fatigue, feeling older than your chronological age, chronic heart burn, aches and pains, brain fog, personality changes such as increased irritability, depression, lack of motivation, insomnia and even feeling hopeless. But, it can occur without any symptoms, too. Primary hyperparathyroidism is commonly linked (signs) to bone loss, kidney stones, pancreatitis, irregular heart beats severe esophageal reflux. It’s diagnosed, ideally, by elevated blood calcium levels, anywhere in the 10’s of mg/dL. If your blood calcium comes back at 10.2 on a regular basis, but your doctor says that’s normal. After listening to this show you will understand the nuances of diagnosing this serious health issue, probably better than your doctor. Any person who gets kidney stones, has bone loss, chronic reflux, or even a single case of pancreatitis, should be evaluated for this condition—primary hyperparathyroidism. But, alas, this life-threatening disorder often goes undiagnosed even by your trusty doctor and endocrinologist. There is a lot of misunderstanding out in the clinical trenches surrounding this disease. This includes diagnosis as well as treatment. But this show clears the air on every single level so you will achieve a grounded understanding of this condition by the end of this hour. What exactly is primary hyperparathyroidism? It’s when a benign tumor grows on one or more of four tiny glands that surround your thyroid gland. Since “para” means “to surround”, and these glands are located around your thyroid gland, which sits like a bow-tie organ at the base of your throat, these glands are labeled your parathyroid glands. You have four of them. But these glands have nothing to do with your thyroid functioning. Parathyroid glands rule your calcium dynamics. Calcium’s actions are famous for being linked to bone health. But calcium’s influence is much more global than only bone formation. Calcium dictates the entire electrical circuitry throughout your body. Thus when calcium, which should be very tightly controlled in the blood, goes too high or too low, many diverse symptoms can occur. In hyperparathyroidism, one or more parathyroid glands become over-active. They secrete excessive amounts of parathyroid hormone. This makes blood calcium levels go too high. In the 10’s. A children has fast growing bone, so kids and young adults can safely have calcium levels in the 10’s. But not once we become adults. Elevated blood levels of calcium are a deadly scenario. Calcium can get clogged in brain tissue, causing cognitive issues. Calcium is pulled out of the bones and can deposit in the heart, in blood vessels, in the kidneys, and in other organs, causing early aging and premature organ damage and even premature death. Calcium is a signaling molecule in the cells that secrete stomach acid (parietal cells) so there can commonly be severe reflux. The patient may be put on anti-depressants, antacids, go through multiple kidney stone procedures, and trek from psychologist to psychiatrist trying to figure out why they feel so gloomy and forlorn. When all the while it may be an insidious silent condition that is only treated by a short and non-invasive small incision in the throat under twilight to removed the “offending” non-cancerous (but deadly) tumor. Yet, very few surgeons are trained in this minimally invasive technique designed by Dr. James Norman, the head of the Norman Parathyroid Center on the 6th floor of the Tampa General Hospital, nicknamed the “Parathyroid Palace”. This is where Dr. Ruan is part of this amazing, one of a kind, surgical team. There is no other surgical clinic in the world that only deals with parathyroid disease. Every staff member knows all there is to know about these four glands, the parathyroid's. No other surgical center focuses only on these endocrine organs alone. Berkson has referred many patients to the Norman clinic, where Dr. Ruan came to be one of their highly trained surgeons after already being a surgeon at the prestigious Harvard Medical Center for eight years. Berkson has shadowed the surgeons at this center and knows first hand how life-saving this diagnosis and simple surgery can be. And we also discuss how too easily the patient can miss being appropriately diagnosed, or be wrongly diagnosed, or even go through a surgery that leaves them worse off or doesn’t address all the involved glands. There are a lot of surgeons out in the wild who do not have the experiential base to thoroughly assess and treat this often misunderstood issue: primary hyperparathyroidism. Dr. Ruan shares his most striking cases. One woman was catatonic and couldn’t speak and within hours of the tumor on her parathyroid gland being removed, she could talk for the first time in a long while. One person was wheel chair bound for an extended time, yet by the second day after surgery with Dr. Ruan, they were walking! This short surgery can be so life altering that Dr. Ruan became a bit teary-eyed while sharing these experiences. This show is touching and oh so informative. One of the huge take-homes from this amazing show is how easy it is to go to good doctors and great community surgeons and still not get the best care or even the accurate diagnosis. Berkson and Ruan detail all the issues to carefully watch out for to protect yourself and those you love. Remember, no one will ever care about your health as much as you will. This show gives life saving information on a too poorly understood issue that many doctors don’t catch. Yet it can make someone loose years off their life. This is a must- hear and must-share show!
