So, this week, Daniel is going to lead Elisa and Bill and Rasool in looking at a few stories of “calling” in the Bible and see how these stories might help us think through where we currently are, how God may be leading us in whatever season we're in, and what the answer to that question—what am I supposed to do with my life?—might be for us right now. Dr. Justyn TerryIntroduced by Pastor Dave Brown Scripture Reading by Pastor Dave Brown 2 Kings 22:1-10; 23:1-3 Pastor Dave Brown read the account of King Josiah, who became king of Judah at eight years old and “did what was right in the eyes of the Lord.” In the eighteenth year of his reign, Josiah ordered repairs to the Temple. During the restoration, Hilkiah the high priest discovered “the Book of the Law” that had been lost and neglected. After hearing the words of Scripture, Josiah gathered the people of Judah and Jerusalem, read the covenant aloud, and renewed the nation's commitment to follow God with all their heart and soul. The people pledged themselves to the covenant as well. Sermon Summary Rev. Dr. Justyn Terry: “God's Work of Redemption” Rev. Dr. Justyn Terry centered his sermon on the life of King Josiah, presenting him as an example of how God prepares people, calls them into redemptive work, and uses them to draw others into His purposes. Using the illustration of restoring a neglected building, Terry compared God's redemptive work to the renovation of a great house or castle. Just as a damaged structure can be restored to its original beauty, God delights in redeeming, repairing, and restoring people, communities, and His creation. Josiah's story demonstrates that God often prepares leaders long before their public accomplishments are visible. Although Josiah's father Amon and grandfather Manasseh were wicked kings, Josiah chose a different path. Terry suggested that the influence of Josiah's mother Jedidah and perhaps other faithful family members helped shape his character and direct him toward God. This reminds believers that the quiet work of discipleship, parenting, mentoring, and spiritual formation often becomes the foundation for future ministry and leadership. Terry emphasized that Josiah did not immediately attempt dramatic reforms. He spent years growing, learning, and preparing before undertaking the enormous task of restoring the nation. When he finally began the Temple repairs, the discovery of the Book of the Law became a turning point. Hearing God's Word exposed how far the people had drifted from God. Rather than respond with pride, Josiah responded with repentance, tearing his robes in humility before the Lord. A central theme of the sermon was the ongoing necessity of Scripture. The people of Judah had allowed God's Word to be forgotten, and their lives reflected that neglect. Terry reminded the congregation that God's Word continues to reveal truth, correct error, and guide believers in faithful living. Regular engagement with Scripture, worship, and Christian fellowship enables God's continuing work of redemption in the hearts of His people. Josiah's renewal did not stop with his personal repentance. He gathered the entire nation, read the covenant publicly, and invited everyone into renewed obedience to God. Terry highlighted this as an example of godly leadership: leaders first allow God to transform them, then they help guide others toward transformation as well. He noted that meaningful change rarely happens alone. God often calls believers to invite others into His work, whether in families, churches, workplaces, or communities. The sermon concluded with a challenge for every believer to consider three questions: What redemptive work is God doing in your own life? What work has God prepared you to do for His kingdom? Who is God calling you to invite into that work? Rev. Dr. Terry encouraged the congregation to remain open to God's transforming power, patient in His preparation, faithful in their calling, and intentional about drawing others into the work of God's kingdom. In Matthew 26, just hours before the cross, Jesus brings three of His closest friends with Him to pray, yet they can't stay awake with Him. Night 1 of Saturated was a call for us to wake up, get on our knees and seek the Lord. What if we spent less time telling God what to do and more time listening to what He's saying? When was the last time you slowed down long enough to hear the voice of the Holy Spirit? The world needs a Church that is awake in the garden. May we be people who seek His presence, listen for His voice and are obedient to what He asks of us today.

Jeremiah 6:16–20 presents a powerful invitation and a sobering warning. God tells His people to stand at the crossroads, look around, ask for the ancient paths, and walk in the good way. Yet their response is heartbreaking: “We will not walk therein.” The passage challenges us to examine the direction of our own lives. We can ask God for guidance while already knowing what He has called us to do. We can pray for His will while resisting His instruction. We can admire the right path without actually walking on it. God's question to Jeremiah's generation is still worth asking today: Which way are you going? Many believers want to hear God but struggle to recognize His voice or distinguish His voice from the many others competing for their attention. If we only realized that God has been speaking to us all along, we did not know how to listen.In Part 4 of "Prayer – Drawing Near to God," Duane Sheriff teaches that prayer should be a dialog, not a monologue. Jesus said His sheep hear His voice and know Him. Learning to hear God begins with understanding how He speaks and training our spiritual ears to recognize His voice.God speaks into our lives in four primary ways: through His Word, His wisdom, His servants, and the Holy Spirit. Scripture gives direction, God's wisdom helps us apply truth to specific situations, godly relationships can speak into our lives, and the Holy Spirit leads through promptings, conviction, righteousness, joy, and peace.Hearing God is not about waiting for a booming audible voice. Instead, it is a whisper, close and intimate, because He is not far off. He is right here. As we grow in our relationship with Him and become still, we will learn the language of the Holy Spirit and recognize the voice of the Good Shepherd.

“Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.” (Psalm 119:105 NLT) “God is love; He doesn’t punish people.” “God wants us to be our authentic selves and not listen to people who judge us.” “God doesn’t care about rules; He cares about what’s best for each person.” How many variations of these statements and others like them have you heard or read recently? There are a lot of people today who claim to hear the voice of God telling them to do this or that. Some even claim God is telling them to disregard biblical teachings in favor of a more inclusive approach to Christianity. No matter how convincing these arguments may seem, however, we must remember that God never contradicts His Word. His truth never fades, changes, or evolves. It is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. He always will lead us according to what His Word says. That’s a hard pill for some people to swallow, especially when they see God’s Word as keeping them from pursuing their own desires. As a result, some come up with some lame concepts, such as, “We’re not married, but God has told us it’s okay to have sex.” I can assure them that God didn’t say that because in His Word says, "God’s will is for you to be holy, so stay away from all sexual sin" (1 Thessalonians 4:3 NLT). God won’t contradict His Word. We also need to realize that God’s Word isn’t an obstacle; it’s an opportunity. Think back to the time when people used to send letters by mail. If you were expecting a letter from someone, you’d stand at the window, waiting for what seemed like an eternity for the postal worker to come by. Then you’d bolt to the mailbox to look for your letter. Maybe it was from someone you were in love with. Maybe it was an answer to a job application. Maybe it was something you ordered in the mail. Maybe it was important news you’ve been waiting for. But what if you had a handwritten note sent to you from God Himself? Would you carry it around in your pocket for a couple of weeks and open it when you got around to it? I doubt it. You probably would tear it open as you’re thinking, “Wow, God spoke to me! What does He have to say?” The Bible is a written letter from God. Many people carry it around. They have it in different colors and sizes. They have it in different translations. They even have it on their phones and devices. But they never open it. A letter from God Himself goes unread. What a missed opportunity! The psalmist wrote, “Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path” (Psalm 119:105 NLT). God stands ready to illuminate every area of our lives. If you want Him to speak to you, then open His Word. In the noise and busyness of social media, you’ll find countless people who will tell you what God wants and doesn’t want, what He loves and hates, what He rewards and punishes, and what He cares about and what He’s indifferent to. But only in the quiet stillness of reading His Word for yourself will you find the truth about our heavenly Father. Reflection question: How do you make the most of your time in God’s Word? What does it truly mean to make an impact? A women's basketball coach at Texas A&M offered a simple but powerful distinction: success is what happens to you, while impact is what happens because of you. Numbers 8, set against the backdrop of the Israelites preparing to journey through the wilderness, gives us four clear attributes of a person who makes a lasting difference. God was literally at the center of the Israelite camp, and that arrangement was intentional. When He is at the center of our lives, everything else finds its proper place.The four attributes are ears that hear the Lord, hands that build a team, a heart that loves the presence of God, and a soul that shines while dented. Hearing God means opening His Word with genuine expectancy, not just asking Him to bless our existing plans but actually listening for His. Building a team means delegating real trust and responsibility to others, whether in ministry, marriage, or family life. Loving His presence means creating space to actually be with God, not just attending church or reading a verse occasionally, but slowing down enough to connect deeply. And shining while dented means allowing the painful, hammered seasons of life to shape us into purposeful instruments rather than broken ones.Jesus modeled all four of these attributes perfectly. He listened constantly to His Father, built a team of disciples, withdrew regularly to pray, and shined most brilliantly while suffering on the cross. Because of it, He became the most impactful person who ever walked the earth. Impact is not reserved for pastors or missionaries or people with large platforms. It belongs to anyone willing to live with ears open, hands extended, a heart pursuing His presence, and a soul that keeps shining even when life has left its marks.

When God calls us to salvation, He also summons us to serve Him. The great task of winning lost people is simply too urgent to allow anyone to sit on the sideline and watch. Jesus shows us God's view of this situation when He says, "The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Therefore beseech (ask, beg) the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest" (Mt 9:37,38). He's telling us there are lots of people who are searching for God but who don't know how to be saved. He says the reason so many are dying without God is because there are so few people actively telling others about Him. In other words, for more people to be saved, there have to be more people doing what God has told them to do. It's tragic to think there are those who would have come if only someone had told them how. Which brings us to the subject of calling. Each of us is urgently needed in the harvest field. Each of us has been summoned to serve the Lord of the Harvest in a specific place, in a specific way and at a specific time. God has issued a call to each of us, and He never changes His mind. He never takes His call back. But sadly many believers go through life unaware of His call. They don't know their assignment, and the result is they don't step into the place waiting for them in the harvest field. Kids will learn that pride is more than bragging. Pride says, “I know best,” and places our desires above God's Word. We'll also discover why simply hearing God's truth is not the same as believing, repenting, and obeying. What We'll Learn John courageously spoke God's truth—even when it was scary.
