In part 1 of our Hearing God series, we unpack how to hear God speak more often by having an open mind, making time to listen, pausing the distractions, and doing what God says.

God forms his people through ordinary, grace-filled rhythms. Rather than treating spiritual habits as tools for self-improvement, we should see them as places where God meets us, pours out his grace, and patiently shapes who we are becoming. One of those places is in his Word. Our God is a speaking God, and he designed us longing and needing to hear his voice. It's a primary way he shapes us. God speaks to form us, reviving our soulds with his Word and guiding us as we listen attentively.

Hearing God's voice is something Jesus tells us is possible for all of his sheep. But if we go into it with the wrong ideas about it, it can cause us to miss the voice of God and become frustrated and quit listening for it. In this message Pastor Joel walks through some guidelines (five of them, to be exact) to consider what will put us in a position to hear the voice of God well in our day to day lives. They have to do with the centrality of grace and God speaking, how God sorts out our hearts when he speaks, why we should be looking for God to speak to us in quieter ways rather than with bright, neon lights, and more.

We look for things and stuff to make us happy, don't we? Especially in the United States, where we are blessed with abundance, people from all walks of life look for more and more.That can bring us to an empty place. Spiritually and emotionally…we begin to look in the wrong places. But as we've discussed this week, that spark of joy we look for can be found only in Jesus. Everything else is, yes, clutter.John 16:24 says, “Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.”This plays out over and over every day. We see this in dramatic ways when a famous person turns from materialism and empty fame and finds Jesus. Someone like that who has experienced uncommon wealth, comes to a place where Jesus must be dealt with.How about you? Are you tired of your empty pursuits?
