As President Trump ratchets up trade wars with America's adversaries and allies, two experts on the economy — Jeff Ferry, chief economist emeritus at the Coalition for a Prosperous America, and Scott Lincicome, vice president of General Economics and Stiefel Trade Policy Center at the Cato Institute — clash over whether tariffs will bolster or crush the U.S. economy and what tariffs mean for Americans.Speaking before a student audience at Hofstra University, Ferry defends President Trump's tariffs, arguing that they will strengthen its domestic manufacturing industries and benefit Americans in the long run. “We need a new economic policy in this country,” says Ferry.Lincicome, a veteran trade attorney, disagrees, arguing that tariffs are a tax on American consumers and businesses that will inhibit growth and harm manufacturing. “Open economies—free economies—grow faster, grow better,” Lincicome said. Closed economies, on the other hand, are “a recipe for poverty.”Ferry and Lincicome also discuss the history of tariffs, their global impact, and take questions from Hofstra students.Support for “Firing Line for Margaret Hoover” is provided by Robert Granieri, Vanessa and Henry Cornell, The Fairweather Foundation, Peter and Mark Kalikow, Cliff and Laurel Asness, The Meadowlark Foundation, Charles R. Around 2:00 am, in the early hours of December 14, 2020, Kent Landry received a call from a Texas State Trooper. It was a call every parent dreads: his 21-year-old son Jason Landry had gotten into a car crash on his drive home for Christmas break.    The trooper reported that Jason's car had been found abandoned on a gravel road in rural Luling, Texas which was only 30 minutes into his three-hour drive home. The car's lights were still on, the keys were in the ignition and the passenger side door was still locked, but Jason was nowhere to be found. It seemed as if he'd fled the scene of the wreck. But to Kent, that didn't sound like something his son would do.    Kent rushed to the scene. When got there, he saw that Jason's clothes were scattered across the road, not far from where he'd wrecked. It was obvious to him that Jason didn't just flee the scene. Something had happened and no one had investigated it.  Jason is white. He is 6'1”, 170 pounds, with brown eyes, shaggy brown hair, and a goatee. He sometimes wears glasses, although he didn't have them with him when he got out of the car - he's presumed to have been wearing contacts. Jason was 21 years old when he went missing. Today, he would be 23.    Anyone with information is asked to call Capt. Jeff Ferry at 512-398-6777 Ext. 4516. If you'd rather leave an anonymous tip, you can call 726-777-1359. On brighter news, the U.S. trade deficit in goods and services for February was $49.4 billion, an improvement of 3.4 percent over the January figure of $51.1 billion, providing more evidence that tariffs are reducing the U.S. deficit. That’s according to figures published by the Department of Commerce. Equally significant, our goods deficit with China came in at $24.8 billion, nearly $10 billion or 28.1 percent better than January’s $34.5 billion, and our best monthly China deficit figure since March 2017. The China deficit in February tends to be smaller due to the Chinese New Year holiday, but the figures still provide evidence that tariffs are reducing our imports from China.

The November goods and services deficit came in at $49.3 billion, 11.5 percent better than October’s figure of $55.7 billion. Equally significant, the November figure was only a hair (0.7 percent to be exact) above the November 2017 deficit of $49.0B. Deficits in previous months in 2018 were typically 10 to 15 percent worse than the corresponding month in 2017. GM announced positive earning reports while deciding to shutter 5 US assembly plants, discontinue car production and offshore more manufacturing to Mexico. Is that really winning? Things are starting to heat up in China and the question is whether compromise will lead to an agreement. Right now it's anyone's guess. Trade is a evolving issue.

GM Cutbacks Due to Offshoring, Not Tariffs By Jeff Ferry General Motors had a very good year in 2018. You read that right... a good year... maybe even an excellent year. Overall, company CEO Mary Barra is bullish, saying, “We expect full-year [earnings per share] to be at the top of our previously-communicated guidance range with potential for further upside.” But you might ask: Didn’t GM just announce the shutting of five auto plants in November, and is laying off some 14,000 workers in the U.S. and Canada? And isn’t all of this supposedly due to President Donald Trump’s tariffs? The fact is, GM’s recent cutbacks have little to do with current sales, and nothing at all to do with the president’s tariffs. [more...]

While the last 5 administrations have either ignored the trade deficit issue or pled helplessness altogether, President Trump has addressed the problem head on. And it's beginning to yield results, witness the recently announced $750 million investment in its ancient US Steel's Gary Indiana steel plant. Things are beginning to change and that will probably be for the US's benefit.
