Clone Wars Conversations continues with the Legacy Multimedia Project, where content was released from unused Clone Wars episodes following the show's cancellation in 2014, and in this episode Dave, Maff & Mike delve into the 4-issue comic series Darth Maul: Son Of Dathomir! In detail, this comic centres around Darth Maul after his capture by Palpatine/Sidious in the fifth season of the Clone Wars following his Mandalore-takeover, noting his torture, escape and the eventual plot that unfolds around Dooku and Mother Talzin, set before the events of Season 7. Our trio discuss each issue in-depth, provide additional context & lore, and talk about how much they enjoyed the comics and if they're necessary for the overall story of The Clone Wars. This talk will consider how and why the frontispiece to this edition was different from those in earlier editions and place the image in relation to other images of ballroom dance bands before and after 1728. The music publisher John Playford built his success on the publication in 1651 of the first book to give tunes and dance instructions for country dances. He named it The English Dancing Master and in subsequent editions The Dancing Master. The frontispiece to the eighteenth and final edition of vol. 1 (c.1728) shows a trio of musicians – violin, oboe, bassoon – accompanying a group of country dancers in a ballroom. This talk will consider how and why the frontispiece to this edition was different from those in earlier editions and place the image in relation to other images of ballroom dance bands before and after 1728. The speakers will also examine Hogarth's print A Country Dance and what it tells us about decorum and licence in mid-18th century ballroom dancing. Jeremy Barlow specialises in English popular and dance music from 1550 to 1750, and also has a particular interest in the illustration of music and social dance over the centuries. He has lectured on a variety of subjects for organisations such as the The Arts Society, U3A, the Art Fund and National Trust. His books include The Enraged Musician: Hogarth's Musical Imagery (Ashgate) and The Cat & the Fiddle: Images of Musical Humour from the Middle Ages to Modern Times (Bodleian Library). The Bodleian Library has also published A Dance Through Time: Images of Western Social Dancing from the Middle Ages to Modern Times. Jeremy is well known for his work on Playford and has published an edition of Playford's dance tunes, The Complete Country Dance Tunes from Playford's Dancing Master (1651–ca.1728) (Faber Music). Alice Little is a Research Fellow at the Bate Collection of Musical Instruments, part of the Music Faculty of the University of Oxford. Her research focuses on collectors and collecting, particularly eighteenth-century tunebooks and their compilers, looking at what sources the collections were gathered from and what the selection of music says about the people and cultures that collected and used them.
In this episode, we look at the soundtrack of the 1996 movie of Jane Austen's Emma by Rachel Portman. We listen to how the clarinet is Emma's voice and how the instrumentation, time signature, and major vs minor are often used to change mood or characters. We also pay to attention to how her emotional journey and theme changes throughout as well as the comedy and matchmaking theme. Finally, we compare the songs performed by Emma and Jane and how the words convey meaning to Frank Churchill's attentions. Synopsis It's quite likely that if we could ask him, the great 18th century composer George Frideric Handel would have described himself first and foremost as a composer of Italian operas. For most of the 19th century, however, it was chiefly Handel's English-language sacred oratorios that kept his fame alive. It wasn't until the 20th century that curiosity about Handel's Italian operas led to revivals, recordings, and their eventual return to the repertory of opera companies worldwide. On today's date in 1711, Handel's opera “Rinaldo” had its premiere performance in London at the Queen's Theater in the Haymarket. This was the first Handel opera produced in London, and the first Italian opera written specifically for that city. It was designed to be a spectacle, full of heroic chivalry and stage magic including live birds and flying machines, a kind of 18th century “Star Wars,” if you will. It was a tremendous success, and, like “Star Wars,” was SO popular that it became fit material for parody. Handel's Act III march of Christian Crusaders resurfaced as a chorus of highway robbers in John Gay's “Beggar's Opera” of 1728, a spoof poking fun at both contemporary politics and the conventions and pretensions of Italian-style opera. The sounds of casting, chiming, singing and clanging are fused together to make a magical sound track to the story of how meat cleavers have been used as musical instruments for over 300 years.. Growing up in Suffolk, Nathaniel Mann, heard stories passed down by his grandma about a tradition of the village Rough Band, made up of pots and pans, iron and metal implements, including meat cleavers - delivering a sort of sonic warning to anyone stepping out of line, committing adultery or behaving in way considered unacceptable. As part of the Avant-Folk trio 'Dead Rat Orchestra', Mann, a singer and composer, has long been playing music with strange percussive instruments. Coming across an old meat cleaver in his dad's garage he was inspired to make a set of cleavers to play music on - so turned to a bronze bladesmith to help turn meat cleavers into musical gold. In a chance discovery, he discovered the idea wasn't new - and so he sought out Jeremy Barlow, author of “The Enraged Musician”, to find out the coded messages of Hogarth’s musical prints, including marrow bones and meat cleavers. He also visits BathIRON 2018, as a new bandstand is being cast for the city of Bath, and gets the chance to conduct and sing with an orchestra of master smiths. The freshly cast meat cleaver is finally used in one of the Nest Collective's Campfire Concerts, where the Dead Rat Orchestra join a trio of female folk musicians from Poland - Sutari - who have developed their own parallel world of Rough Music. A joyful celebration, some nail biting forging, and some entrancing music. You've never heard cleavers like this before.... Producer: Sara Jane Hall
We’re headed back to The Clone Wars and taking a look at the four-issue comic book, Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir, which was written by Jeremy Barlow and penciled by Juan Frigeri. This is a comic with quite a reputation, and a bit of legend surrounding it, because it is the first book to be published after the April 25th, 2014 announcement that the EU was no longer canon. It’s the only canon comic book that was originally published by Dark Horse, and until last year it was out of print, with existing copies selling for hundreds of dollars. We discuss Maul's revenge arc, his relationship with Palpatine, and connections to other material. We also get a chance to talk about the Solo TV spot since we recorded during the Super Bowl.
#summerofcomics continues with Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir by Jeremy Barlow and Juan Frigeri. Dooku and Grievous team up to take Maul down a peg. Sidious wins the day again, duping the Jedi along the way. If you watched Clone Wars, this comic is for you. We here at MakingComics.com hope you had a great 2014 and we look forward to you joining us as we rush headlong into 2015. However, we still have one more piece of business to attend to, and that's the final Gutter Talk episode of the year. It seems fitting that this episode is a re-issue of the one that started this whole thing, Jason Brubaker, and the second part of his conversation with artists Jeremy Barlow and Travis Hanson. If you missed the first half, click here. But first, Adam and Michael talk about holiday plans and other shop talk. See you all next year! Ok, yeah, we know it's next week. Just roll with it. Another great re-issue this week with Jason Brubaker and his guests Jeremy Barlow and Travis Hanson. If you aren't familiar with their work, on your next break from finishing that panel you've been avoiding, get familiar with it. Listen to this podcast, the first half of this conversation, while you're researching and working. Before the conversation begins, Adam is joined by co-host Michael Yakutis to discuss the NaNoWriMo challenge Adam is finishing up, a very cool Secret Santa event with Webcomic Underdogs, and some of the finer points of the podcast you're about to listen to.
