This week we're discussing every album by Foetus. However, there are a million EPs, remix albums, and collabs, so we're just sticking with the core 10 albums. Foetus is the brainchild of JG Thirlwell, whom many will know as the music composer for The Venture Bros. and Archer. But Thirlwell's roots stem all the way back to the New York no wave scene with characters like Lydia Lunch and Nick Cave. Be prepared, this is one hell of a discography.Closing track: “Paper Slippers” from Hide (2010)Patreonhttps://www.patreon.com/everyalbumeverMerchhttps://pandermonkey.creator-spring.com/Mike's EP:Pander Monkey on Bandcamp, Spotify, Apple,Instagram:Mike @pandermonkeyAlex @everyalbumalexTom @tomosmansoundsHistory Tom's stuff:Music on Spotify, AppleSubstackWebsiteMike's Picks:Hide (2010) — Best Album, Personal FavoriteDeaf (1981) — Worst Album, Least FavoriteAlex's Picks:Nail (1985) — Best AlbumFlow (2001) — Personal FavoriteThaw (1988) — Worst Album, Least FavoriteAlbums we discussed this episode…Deaf (1981)Ache (1982)Hole (1984)Nail (1985)Thaw (1988)Gash (1995)Flow (2001)Love (2005)Hide (2010)Soak (2013)

JG Thirlwell was cool enough to to sit down with us for a deep look into his world of sound. Thirlwell has worked with everyone form Steven Stapleton and Coil to scoring "The Venture Brothers" and "Archer" television shows, not to mention his own hefty discography as Foetus, Steroid Maximus, Xordox and so much more. It was incredible to hear stories from his entire history as well as what's being planned for the future. Prepare to enter Pigdom Come.
From Brooklyn, New York we catch up with composer, guitarist and bandleader Simon Hanes. We talk about pep talks, his chamber ensemble Tredici Bacci, his music education, the mentorship of folks like JG Thirlwell and much more. Get into the wild universe of Simon Hanes!
I'm thrilled to be joined by the truly legendary composer JG Thirlwell, mastermind behind Foetus, Manorexia, Xordox, The Venture Bros., the list goes on. We talk about what it has meant for Jim to inhabit different characters, score TV, and confront his mortality, over the course of a career stretching back to the early '80s.
Composer, musician, and producer James George Thirlwell has been known as JG Thirlwell, Clint Ruin, Frank Want, and most famously, Foetus and its many incarnations. Lately he has been doing quite a bit of scoring for television, with Archer and The Venture Bros. among his credits. I dropped in at his Brooklyn loft a while back to learn more. Enjoy! Tony Fletcher reunites with musician/composer Jim ‘JG' Thirlwell, DJ Wendy May, and Dimple Records boss Brian O'Neill, all of whom he first met in the late 1970s when they bought copies of Jamming! off him while they were working behind the counter at the Virgin shops in Oxford Walk, Notting Hill Gate, and Marble Arch respectively. During that thriving post-punk period the entire Virgin chain served as a needed middle ground between the pioneering independents like Rough Trade, Probe and Revolver, and mainstream high street shops WH Smiths and Woolworths. Without the autonomy Virgin granted its record buyers, a lot of independent labels, emerging bands and street fanzines would not have enjoyed such a wide profile. In this conversation, the four discuss the role of the record shop during that period, the freedom the staff enjoyed at Virgin, and offer specific anecdotes and reminiscences about serving the likes of Elvis Costello, Boy George, Paul Simonon, David Coverdale and more. Additionally, Jim recalls how an encounter with a customer helped point him on a different creative musical path, Wendy talks of how she ultimately received the classic ultimatum - "it's your job or your band" - and Brian talks of how his love of selling records has inspired him to start a new independent label in his retirement years.JG Thirlwell is at Website http://www.foetus.org https://jgthirlwell.bandcamp.com/ https://www.instagram.com/jgthirlwell/ and https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100045377091477Wendy May can be found on Instagram and Facebook.Brian O'Neill's label Dimple Discs is at https://dimplediscs.bandcamp.com/ His Microdisney documentary project is https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/microdisney-filmFor details about the book events mentioned on this episode visithttps://www.facebook.com/theTonyFletcher/eventsThe Best of Jamming!: Selections and Stories from the Fanzine That Grew Up 1977-86 is published by Omnibus PressTonyFletcher.netOmnibusPress.com 'The Jamming! First of all, thank you to all our patrons for making 23rd Mind TV possible! https://www.patreon.com/vanessa23carl Carl just started a crowdfunder to support his An Art Apart film series and forthcoming book! https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/an-art-apart-number-one#/ “An Art Apart” – a series of documentary films about artists and their creative processes. So far, I’ve filmed 14 artists: Vicki Bennett (People Like Us), Gustaf Broms, Charles Gatewood, Genesis Breyer P-Orridge, Kenneth Anger, Carl Michael von Hausswolff, Angela Edwards, MV Carbon, John Duncan, Gea Philes, Michael Gira, Mark McCloud, Val Denham, and Little Annie Bandez. I am now preparing two manifestations at the same time: – A “stand alone” film called “An Art Apart: Number One.” This will become a one hour film (approximately), containing the best of the best from these very unique people/films. My aim is for “Number One” to become an inspirational and creative blast for anyone who watches the film. – A book with all the interviews/conversations, also called "An Art Apart: Number One." The book will also contain never before published bonus interviews with brilliant artists Joe Coleman, JG Thirlwell and Alison Blickle, made in New York and Los Angeles in 2016-2017. Composer-producer-frontman-wizard JG Thirlwell has been making astonishing, orchestral, bombastic music for decades. Born in Australia, he teamed up with Nick Cave and the Birthday Party, then joined Prag VEC, and soon formed his enduring solo project Foetus. Operating under plethora of pseudonyms and monikers meant to confuse, shock, and awe, Thirlwell continues to churn out an astounding amount of music and to perform as a frontman for his own projects, as well as a composer for animated series Venture Brothers, Archer, and Dicktown. We talked about his beginnings in London, moving to New York in the early 80s, starting out using 16 tracks of tape and an elaborate numerical system, his first time wearing "guy liner," the importance of remembering World War Two, his evolving theories on shock value and fear as a part of performance, and his changing relationship to his Australian roots as a citizen of the world. Episode sponsor: Crazy Eddie's. Opening music: Marchandise by Fugazi, performed by Pierre de Gaillande with James Fletcher, drums. Songs: Courtyard Dogs, Moths, and Witchmarket from The Blue Eyes Soundtrack by JG Thirlwell. Your Lazy Lay Lay by Prag VEC. Foetus special with JG Thirlwell in conversation with David Eastaugh Thirlwell was born in Melbourne, Australia. He briefly studied Fine Art at Melbourne State College (now part of the University of Melbourne) before moving to London, England in 1978, where he played with the post-punk band prag VEC and formed the first of his numerous musical projects, Foetus. In the 1980s, under the pseudonyms Clint Ruin and Frank Want, he contributed to various releases by Nurse With Wound, Marc Almond, The The and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. He co-wrote "Wings Off Flies" on From Her to Eternity, the first Bad Seeds album. Longtime Nick Cave associate Mick Harvey would later report that Thirlwell's time in the band was cut short, in part, by a clash between Thirlwell's highly structured studio routine as contrasted with Cave's at-the-time habit of "shambling through it" while recording. Thirlwell released his first 7" single, OKFM/Spite Your Face, in 1981, on his own Self-Immolation record label in his first incarnation as Foetus. Over the next few years, he would release two more singles, a 12" EP, and four full-length albums, Deaf, Ache, Hole and Nail (Some Bizzare Records) . After visiting the United States during a live stint with the Immaculate Consumptive (Lydia Lunch, Nick Cave and Marc Almond) Thirlwell settled in New York City, where he is still based. Since his move he has released several singles, fourteen EPs (including Stinkfist, with fellow New York artist Lydia Lunch and Thurston Moore), and seventeen full-length albums. In addition to being a prolific artist in his own right, Thirlwell has remixed and produced numerous pieces for artists including Faith No More, Nine Inch Nails, Pantera, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, The The, Zola Jesus and Swans. He has also done voice-over work for MTV and other entities. Since 2000 Thirlwell has become more active as a composer, having written commissions for Bang on a Can, League of Electronic Musical Urban Robots, and the Kronos Quartet, and scoring cartoons The Venture Bros. for Adult Swim and Archer for FX. He also revived his primary instrumental project, Steroid Maximus, and initiated a more experimental instrumental project in Manorexia. He continues to write and perform regularly as a solo artist and with various ensembles. He is also a member of the freq_out sound art collective, and has created solo sound installations in Kaliningrad, Santarcangelo and Vienna.
This week on the podcast we have Zola Jesus! We talked about looking for experimental music after studying opera, performing at the Guggenheim with JG Thirlwell conducting a string quartet, and making music based on how it feels. JG Thirlwell came out of the early ’80s New York underground scene and, under multiple pseudonyms that all had the word “foetus” in them, made lots of intense albums that evoke what AllMusicGuide has called “a harrowing netherworld of death, lust, disease and decay.” You can hear the Foetus influence in bands like Nine Inch Nails and Ministry. Over the years, Thirlwell broadened his musical scope to the point where he is now an acclaimed new music composer, as well writing scores for film and television, and developing site-specific audio installations. And he’s kept his hand in rock music, collaborating with a wide range of rock musicians, from the Melvins to Zola Jesus to Sonic Youth. He’s composed pieces for various renowned new music ensembles, including the Kronos Quartet. One could argue that the chart-topping, prize-winning, multiple Grammy-winning Kronos Quartet is the most famous string quartet in the entire history of string quartets. Over their 42-year existence, they’ve exposed many different kinds of audiences to many kinds of music by breaking down, or at least ignoring, barriers between genres. They’ve played art-tango with Astor Piazzolla, backed up Tom Waits, David Bowie, Paul McCartney and Björk, and covered Bob Dylan, Ornette Colemanand Sigur Rós. But most importantly, Kronos has been a major player in nurturing the contemporary repertoire, working closely with iconic composers such as Steve Reich, Arvo Pärt, Terry Riley, Laurie Anderson, Henryk Gorecki, Osvaldo Golijov and Philip Glass. And lately, they’ve also begun collaborating with — and commissioning pieces by — a wide variety of younger musicians: Bryce Dessner (the National), Greg Saunier (Deerhoof), Amon Tobin, Glenn Kotche (Wilco) and Richard Reed Parry (Arcade Fire), among many others. Kronos has commissioned and performed two pieces by JG Thirlwell: “Eremikophobia” and “Nomatophobis,” with a third piece on the way. So we put together these two thoughtful and visionary musicians for a Talkhouse Music Podcast.
Jim Coleman started playing music when he was eight. Screaming and kicking, he was classically trained through his earlier years, learning to play both piano and french horn. What he really wanted to be doing was to be making his own music, making manifest the thoughts and feelings running rampant inside him. He became an integral member of seminal NYC based band Cop Shoot Cop in the late 80's and stayed in that family until it's demise in 1996. Since then, he has been scoring music for indie films and TV series, putting out solo releases and numerous remixes as Phylr, collaborating with Teho Teardo as Here, collaborating with JG Thirlwell as Baby Zizanie, and is now releasing a neo-classical ambient album called TREES under his own name.
