Jo Ellis, a transgender Black Hawk pilot with 15 years of U.S. military service, addresses the hate and threats she received online after she was wrongfully accused of flying the helicopter in the fatal DC plane crash. This comes after President Trump blamed Democrats and DEI policies for the crash that killed 67 people on board a commercial flight and Black Hawk helicopter. Then, Florida Republican Congressman Byron Donalds joins Smerconish to discuss the latest DOJ firings and trade wars with America's largest trading partners. Finally, Derrick Darby, a Rutgers University professor who studies the intersection of hip-hop and political philosophy, explains how money, power, and influence led to Trump's comeback. Did A Female Black Hawk Helicopter Pilot Trainee Deliberately Crash Into American Airlines Flight 5342? (1-30-25), https://lukeford.net/blog/?p=158786 https://www.npr.org/2025/01/30/nx-s1-5281246/pentagon-jet-military-helicopter-collision NPR reports: The governors of Georgia and Mississippi have identified two of the Black Hawk helicopter crew killed in a collision with a passenger airliner at Reagan National Airport on Wednesday night. They are Brooksville, Miss. native Chief Warrant Officer Andrew Eaves, whose wife has also posted about his death on Facebook and asked for "peace," and Georgia native Staff Sgt. Ryan O'Hara. A U.S. military official told NPR on Friday that at the request of the family the Army is not going to release the name of the female member of the three-person helicopter crew. The official was not authorized to speak publicly on the matter. The withholding of the name is a highly unusual move. The identity of the third crew member has already drawn intense scrutiny online. NYT: https://www.nytimes.com/2025/01/31/us/virginia-pilot-black-hawk-helicopter-crash.html Jo Ellis, a helicopter pilot in the Virginia Army National Guard, was falsely identified as the captain of the crashed Black Hawk helicopter in thousands of social media posts this week. The flurry of falsehoods were so extreme that Ms. Ellis, who is transgender, posted a “proof of life” video to Facebook clarifying that she is alive and had not flown the crashed chopper. The falsehoods, which tried to tie Ms. Ellis's transgender identity to the tragedy, spread online shortly after President Trump and his allies attempted to tie the crash in Washington, D.C., to so-called “D.E.I. programs,” an array of initiatives meant to boost diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace. There is no evidence that such programs played any role in the crash. “I understand some people have associated me with the crash in D.C. and that is false,” Ms. Ellis said in a video posted to her Facebook account. “It is insulting to the families to try to tie this to some sort of political agenda. They don't deserve that. I don't deserve this.” Ms. Ellis is a Black Hawk pilot who has served for 15 years in the Virginia Army National Guard, according to a blog post she published Tuesday on Smerconish, an independent news website, which detailed her transition while in the armed forces. Ms. Ellis did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Posts and reposts about Ms. Ellis surged Friday morning as thousands of accounts on X shared her photos and details online. The posts earned hundreds of thousands of views on the platform, according to a review by The New York Times and data from Tweet Binder, a company that collects data on the social network. “Jo Ellis” was the No. 2 most-trending topic in the United States on X late Friday morning with more than 90,000 posts, according to Trends24, a website that tracks trending topics. https://www.smerconish.com/exclusive-content/living-to-serve-living-as-myself-a-transgender-service-members-perspective/

Since 2009, Jo Jo has been helped entrepreneurial women and women in the coaching and therapy industry break through the obstacles that seem to be holding them back from achieving their business and life goals.Jo has seen a big increase in Imposter Syndrome where women who are successful in business feel like a fraud, full of self-doubt and spend a lot of time comparing themselves to others. This can result in them keeping themselves small, never realizing their true potential and also experiencing a level of anxiety and stress which stops them enjoying the freedom of running their own business.Jo Jo says "There is a lot more pressure to be visible nowadays. When I started my business, it was mainly an offline business where you advertised in Yellow Pages or were able to gain customers with just an average website and some referrals. Nowadays, so much business is conducted online so you are regularly faced with the polished versions of your competitors lives and businesses. This leads to a rise in comparisonitis and not feeling good enough. The innate fear of being judged creates stress for many women and stops them putting themselves out there.I also see a big increase in overwhelm where women have so many roles to play and so many options and conflicting messages on how to build their businesses which can lead to inaction and procrastination. Luckily there are many easy strategies I teach to help women through the above, the world needs them to do their thing! My top tips to help with overwhelm and imposter syndrome I would say to just remember that this is your journey. Really connect to your mission, why you do what you do, what is the difference you want to make in the world and for your clients and that always makes things easier. I have struggled with imposter syndrome in the past and I know that I am focused on ‘am I good enough’ so when I flip it into how can I serve what difference can I make, how can I contribute, it always makes it so much easier. The more we are connected to our why, the more the how sorts itself out. With overwhelm, it often comes because we work too hard, we put too much pressure on ourselves, so take a step back, focus on what’s important, focus on why you are doing what you are doing, breathe and just trust your gut as well. As I say there are lots of conflicting messages, but normally we know what works best for us and for our clients."Jo runs a free Facebook Group called Woman of Influence where we help female entrepreneurs breakthrough self-sabotage and develop the mindset and leadership skills to really stand out as authentic experts in their field – www.facebook.com/groups/womanofinfluenceWebsite: www.jojoellis.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/jojoellis1111/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jojoellis/Support the show (https://costawomen.com/help/contact)
The Build Guild Podcast : A Professionally Unprofessional Podcast for Makers
Our guest host for Episode Five is Jo Ellis, the Founder and Director of Make.Do. Graduating from Harding with a degree in interior design and her MBA, Jo wasn’t exactly sure what she wanted to do after her time at Harding was over. While spending three years in Ireland as a missionary, Jo was a camp counselor during the summer. After being a counselor for a group of girls who challenged her, she offered to let the girls visit her in Dublin, not really believing they’d accept. They did. With three teenage girls in her house and unsure of what to do to keep them occupied, Jo set the girls on a task that has forever changed her own life: make pillowcases. Jo watched the girls create something that was uniquely theirs, their struggle with the creative process, and the impact the affirmation they received had on the girls. Believing that creativity is a fundamental aspect of who God is and how it is a restorative process where we find our identity, integrity, and value, Jo realized this mission could become something truly incredible. At times, Jo faced immense challenges and self-doubt, and started actually running a variation of Make.Do. out of the back of her car, loading and unloading ten sewing machines at whatever venue she was in that night. Eventually, Jo returned to Searcy and began to truly realize the mission she had dreamed of. Make.Do.’s purpose and goal are to create something while connecting to others within the community. The creating is the “Make” aspect of Make.Do., and the connections formed are the “Do.”. Jo wants those in the community who attend classes to enjoy the experience of creating something they can be proud of while working through the creative process and connecting with others through this experience of creating together. Although Make.Do. isn’t necessarily an activity for only women, Jo views it as an incredible outlet for women in the church to lead and display their talents in a validating and encouraging environment. This is Jo’s first year working full-time for Make.Do., and although she has her own artistic talents and abilities, she often will bring others in to teach a variety of classes. Make.Do.’s business model is inclusive and welcomes everyone, with suggested prices for those who can afford it and allowing those who can’t pay to participate anyway. The first female guest host on the show, Jo is an incredible example of using talents to honor God while also bettering her community along the way. Make.Do.’s logo, the lemon, is a constant reminder that if life gives us lemons to make lemonade, and maybe to “Be Createfull” along the way. http://makedocreate.org/ To help sponsor Make.Do.’s Collaboration with the White County Child Safety Center at Camp Createfull coming up on June 28th, or to donate to Make.Do.’s mission, donations can be sent here: http://makedocreate.org/get-involved/fundraising/ https://www.instagram.com/makedocreate/ https://www.facebook.com/Make.Do.Searcy/ Also, check out our new Facebook group for The Build Guild Podcast: https://www.facebook.com/groups/402217757048040/ And find us on social here: https://www.facebook.com/thebuildguildpodcast/ https://www.facebook.com/arganicwoodwork/ https://www.facebook.com/MyersWoodshop/ https://www.facebook.com/fierysquirrelart/ https://www.instagram.com/arganic_woodwork/ https://www.instagram.com/myerswoodshop/ https://www.instagram.com/fierysquirrelart/ And once again, if you want to fuel The Build Guild’s snack craving after the podcast: https://amzn.to/2IFrFnw Next episode we have an exciting guest host, so come back and join us! The Build Guild Podcast : A Professionally Unprofessional Podcast for Makers
In this episode of the Build Guild Podcast, Mark Bates, a local carpenter who has spent the last thirteen years operating his own business. Mark’s clientele comes from a mix of referrals from Lowe’s™ and word-of-mouth around the community. Mark began working in the contracting industry working as an installer for Lowe’s™, and then became an installer himself. New to social media, Mark is learning how to advertise his business by showcasing his projects for both his business and his own home. Similar to Coty’s family, Mark’s family is involved in the foster care system. Recognizing the juggernaut of emotions surrounding a foster child’s first day in his or her new home, Mark constructed a castle at the front of his house to make that difficult first day a little easier. The second floor of his home contains a hidden passage, spiral staircase and hidden room to add a whimsical touch to his children’s childhood. Mark’s perspective is completely unique from the other makers of the Build Guild podcast. Most notably, Mark’s tools differ from the fine woodworking tools the other Build Guild makers utilize in their daily business. As a general contractor, Mark’s tool investments occur often and are focused on transportation and durability, whereas Ben, Brian, and Coty all see their tools as lasting investments that can (hopefully) last for years before being passed on to novice makers. Mark is an incredible example of how making isn’t limited to fine woodworking but is an all-encompassing field with room for anyone with an idea or just a little bit of whimsy. His 9-5 work is impeccable, but after hours he’s created an environment where his children have a place to make their daydreams a reality. Episode 4 brings us up to speed with Coty’s journey in the Small Business Revolution™, Brian’s current (secret) projects he’s spending the summer on, and Ben’s hair-brained YouTube ideas for Mark’s house. Mark and Coty are both in need of employees for their businesses, and a resume with any relevant experience can be emailed to Markbatescontracting@gmail.com and Arganicwoodwork@gmail.com, respectively.
