Listeners, welcome to Episode 134! It's been another big week in the world of running, with the "Jakgoat" breaking the world indoor mile record, taking it from Nuguse, just days after it was set. Meanwhile, Kiplimo also shattered the world half marathon record in Barcelona. TRAINING WEEKS  The team shares some impressive training weeks. Joel kicks things off by telling us how he's recovered from a bout of gastro. Tess runs her largest weekly mileage in a long time, including a couple of solid sessions, while Jack discusses his training week and his race result from the indoor 3k in Seattle. We also give a special shoutout to friend of the show Jude Thomas for finishing second behind Nico Young in the mile. THE BIG Q The team tackles a question from a listener about returning to running after illness. While Jack, Joel, and Tess offer their advice, it's always a good idea to consult with a doctor too. GIVE SOME KUDOS A mix of recommendations this week: Joel shares his recent trip to Apollo Bay and tells listeners to visit this charming small town. Jack suggests opting for quieter long-haul flights with extra seat space, and Tess gives a shoutout to some epic running shorts. Arsonist torches Bibles, Will Scottish be imprisoned for “misgendering”?, Woman drags three drowning men out of water

It's Tuesday, April 2nd, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Kevin Swanson South African bus crashes, killing 45 A bus carrying 46 persons from Botswana to an Easter service in Moria, South Africa drove off a bridge and burst into flames over the weekend, resulting in 45 deaths, reports a South African news site. Only one person, an 8-year-old girl, miraculously survived the crash. One relative told the New York Times, “No one can explain this miracle.” Arsonist torches Bibles Somebody set a trailer full of Bibles on fire in the parking lot of Global Vision Bible Church in Juliet, Tennessee on Sunday. Pastor Greg Locke made a statement on Facebook. He wrote, “Our security cameras caught a man dropping off a trailer in the middle of the intersection and blocking the road into our church. He then got out and set fire to an entire trailer full of Bibles right in front of our church.”   The police are investigating. Will Scottish be imprisoned for “misgendering”? News pundit Paul Joseph Watson of Modernity News is suggesting that thousands will be investigated and some imprisoned in Scotland for misgendering. That would include the likes of famous author J.K. Rowling. This week, Scotland's Hate Crime and Public Order Act of 2021 goes into effect. Anyone who is “stirring up hatred” on the basis of sexual orientation or transgender identity will be prosecuted. Sanctions could extend to seven years in prison for any “insulting” behavior towards the protected groups. Israel killed top Iranian commander in Syria An Israeli air attack leveled a building on or near the property of the Iranian consulate in Syria, resulting in multiple casualties, reports the BBC. The Iranian state-affiliated media has confirmed that a top commander of Iran's Revolutionary Guard, Mohammad Reza Zahedi, was killed in the attack. Germany legalized marijuana Germany has just legalized private possession and the recreational use of marijuana. The Deutsch Welle news site quoted the president of the German Society of Psychiatry. He said, “I fear that with this law we are casting out the devil and replacing him with Beelzebub.” Germany joins the European Union countries of Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Belgium, and the Netherlands with this move. Drug-related executions up But now, worldwide drug-related executions are on the rise.   Records available for 2023 reveal that 467 people were executed for drug-related offenses. And that doesn't include China, North Korea, and Vietnam. Most of the data comes from Iran, Kuwait, and Singapore.   These numbers are up 44% from the previous year. Americans are crippling themselves with illicit drugs People in the United States consume more illicit drugs than any other nation, according to data from World Population Review. America rates 6.7 on Disability-Adjusted Life Years.  Estonia, Mongolia, Canada, Greenland, and Russia also rate between 3.8 and 5.0 on Disability-Adjusted Life Years, due to illicit drug use. For drug deaths per 100,000, the U.S. rates twice as many than the second highest in the world — Estonia, and three times as many deaths as Canada, which stands at third place in the world for drug deaths.   Drug-related U.S. deaths have exceeded 110,000 per year.  95% of the world's opium comes from a mere three nations: Afghanistan (the world leader), Mexico, and Myanmar. The nations with the lowest drug-related deaths in the world are found in Africa and Southeast Asia. Proverbs 11:19 reminds us that, “As righteousness leads to life, so he who pursues evil pursues it to his own death.” Interest payments on U.S. debt have exploded U.S. government interest payments, as a percentage of total tax receipts, have exploded to 35%.   That's the highest level since big inflation rates of the 1980s and early 1990s. Cost of housing skyrocketing To afford a median-priced house in the U.S. today, an American family would have to earn $111,000.   By contrast, in January 2020, just before COVID, the American family would have to earn $76,000 to afford a median-priced house.  That's a whopping 46% increase. The Consumer Price Index has run 20% over these four years. Most Americans believe Jesus rose from the dead In 2022, Lifeway Research reported that 66% of Americans agreed that the Biblical account of Jesus Christ's physical resurrection was completely accurate. Only 23% disagreed. Trust in U.S. pastors hitting rock bottom In other religious surveys, trust in pastors has reached an historic low in America — dropping from 64% to 32% since 2001.  Pastors are less trusted than nurses, veterinarians, engineers, dentists, medical doctors, pharmacists, police officers, college teachers and psychiatrists. Pastors are called to a high standard. Here's 1 Timothy 2:1-4.  “An overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money.  He must manage his own household well.” Woman drags three drowning men out of water And finally, an Australian woman is being hailed a hero for hauling not one, not two, but three drowning men to shore in Apollo Bay, Victoria, reports Channel 7 News.  Thirty-three-year-old Brianna Hurst risked her own life to drag the three men, all unconscious, one at a time to shore.    HURST: “It's pretty hard like I had to swim out to get him about like 20 meters and then pulled him in. He was pretty heavy. He was much bigger than me.” She began CPR until first responders arrived on the scene.  Two of the three men survived. And Channel 7 News quotes one of the survivors  “thanking God” for his rescuer. HURST: “It just feels like I did what anyone else would do.” Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Tuesday, April 2nd in the year of our Lord 2024. Subscribe by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com. We couldn't fit all of Tiphaine De Fleurette Hunter-Brown's career titles into our, well, title, so we didn't even try. This powerhouse of a woman is a true slashie and we know that the list of titles will keep growing on a weekly, if not daily basis.Tiphaine is the creative director of The Project Space, a creative arts facility in Apollo Bay, Creative Director of Floreo Creative Web + Design and co-director of Videokills, a video and performance art-based collaborative network and festival. When starting The Project Space, Tiphaine's plan was to open an “everything space” for her community in rural Victoria. Her own feelings of isolation pushed her to create a space for creativity and possibility and open it up to others as a community resource. And that's how we met Tiphaine, through her project “The Development Lab” where we were artists in residence in 2021.Tiph's latest addition to her creative practice is slinging luscious Belizean food from her food truck, Jungle Drifter. It's fascinating how when you're an adult, you often just want to share the things you loved when you were a kid. Jungle Drifter was the natural progression for Tiph, as she needed some breathing space from her other pursuits, but still wanted to be connected to her community.Tiphaine shares it all with us, including her recipe for Belizean Fry Jacks, which is on our website.Find us @whatartistseat on Instagram and our website www.whatartistseat.com.auLinks to Tiphaine's work and anything else we chatted about:Floreo Creative instaFloreo Creative WebsiteJungle Drifter coffee and food van instaClick here to hire The Project Space on Creative SpacesSam Gant Hosted on Acast. On the show today Jack and Freja talk with Lisa about Seismic Testing. You might be wondering - is this a Post-Punk revival band? A cold war relic?Nope... Seismic testing is the process of locating gas and oil deposits deep beneath the ocean floor. This is done by triling an air gun off the back of a boat, which send out sonic blasts 24 hours a day, every 10 seconds, at up to 256 decibels for months at a time. To give perspective, a jet engine at 50m is 140 decibels, so it's no longer a sound than human ears can hear, its more of a burst of energy so powerful that it kills and causes permanent and significant damage to many species of marine life. The full extent of the damage done is not known and that suits the authorites and the gas and oil industry very nicely. Not much is known about the secretive seismic tests being done offshore as most reports into are done by the fuel companies themsleves. The only reliable source of information on Ottaway testing is OCEAN, keep up to date on their events and eyes peeled for a 60 second video by young Apollo Bay filmmaker Jackson Hyett and Patagonia. If you want to look further into titles that have been given by the government and investigate these practices check the NOPTA database. And as always,

Zadie is a 24 year old Solo Mama of two gorgeous girls! She is also the owner of her own photography business based in Apollo Bay & Surrounds. It could be easy to look at Zadie's current life and think it has been an easy road to the beautiful life she has created for herself and her family but it has been tough. In her teen years Zadie became a career for her ill Mother, was helping to raise her young brothers and even sleeping with her baby brother in her room. With so much responsibility at such a tender age, naturally Zadie felt resentful, angry, depressed and eventually left home for some reprieve and independence. Growing up Zadie was apart of a Church community and had strong friendships and relationships, that all changed when Zadie became a Mother at 17, those metaphorical doors were closed on her leaving her isolated and alone. By the time Zadie was 18 she was married with. a baby and a young stepdaughter, her dreams and desires had been put on hold and while her friends were out partying Zadie was deep in Motherhood and things in her marriage were not going well. Cut to age 23 Zadie and her former husband had two children together and her stepdaughter and they both knew the marriage was not going to work and was over. In this episode Zadie walks us through that process, how she transitioned into becoming a single parent and some of the confronting realities of being not only a single parent but a working parent too. Danny Leo joins me in 'The Engine Room' to discuss his musical journey. Youngest of 3 musical boys (others are guitarists) raised in Croydon, South Australia, Danny always found himself drawn to drums and listening to his favorite band at the time 'KISS'. He received his first pair of sticks when he was 6 from one of his brothers friends who was a drummer and this sparked his desire to play. Danny was given his first kit at age 9 from the drummer at the church that the family attended, and his parents to this day dislike this particular friend as Danny hasn't stopped playing since. He began playing with the church band when he was 11, playing in the band with people 3 times his age. Almost giving up playing in high school due to choosing to play basketball over music, thankfully when Danny finished year 12 in 1999 his passion for drumming returned and he decided music was it. The ten years that followed were years of unhealthy hours of practice, studying drums with former guest Laurie Kennedy at Noarlunga TAFE, attending Prides Business College, countless rehearsals, bands, gigs, tours, sessions, and teaching drums. He became a local hero in Adelaide in 2010 scoring the holy throne of tribute shows as the drummer for the Led Zeppelin Tribute band the 'Zep Boys'. Danny Leo is known for his heavy hitting, finesse and groove. DRUMscene Magazine, Australia's number 1 drum magazine regards Danny as one of Australia's premier drummers. Danny is the former powerhouse behind the original Melbourne rock n roll outfit 'King of the North'. He moved to Melbourne in January 2012 and quickly became one of the most talked about rock drummers due to his hard hitting, fast moving sweat shows all around Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Sydney, and Europe. Shows including Cool Summer, Cherry Rock and Folk Rhythm & Life festivals, Apollo Bay & Gum Ball festivals, residencies at the Retreat, Espy and Cherry bar, main slots at Rock The Bay and Rock N Load at the Espy, and the main support for Cold Chisel at Festival Hall. Danny moved back to Adelaide with his wife after the birth of their daughter, and rejoined the Zep Boys. He is currently the drummer for 'Fluff', 'Forest Of Gnomes', singer songwriter at 'Lion Music', as well as filling in for other bands. @JanetBond   is the cofounder of @WattleRoad  which, based on this trend of people #movingtotheregions, was launched to guide to people considering this #lifechange, this #lifestylechange, and inspire them by talking to people who'd already done it. Through those stories, we hope that  people will know  what not to do, and what not to do.  The website is focussed on #regionalbusinesses #regionalproperty #regionalliving. It's best summarised as follows "it's as much about dreams and new beginnings, as it is about finding a house that you will love and a great school for your kids".Prior to that, she had an extensive career in business and commercial journalism, in both regional and capital cities for companies including #newscorp. Common in the publications was advocating for a city or town, helping to be really proactive about making sure it was a great place to live. But in 2019 she left the corporate world to start @WattleRoad after a chance discussion with a close friend who had recently moved to #Japarat - where #RobertMenzies was born. Her friend had escaped lockdown and unexpectedly discovered the real meaning of community;going down to the local post office and being known by her nameeating at the local pub and meeting peopleIn our wide-ranging discussion we cover;why it's no longer people escaping the city but more being attracted by what is on offer in the #regionsthe trends that are showing a return to those days where small towns and towns had their #localbaker, their #localfishmonger, their #localbutcher, their #localbrewer#housingaffordability and #livabilityhow property prices in #regionalaustralia for the first time in 15 years have outperformed capital city pricesrealising that there's a story that wasn't being told about the regions and immersing themselves in itloving what we domaking better decisions on #treechange #seachangehow people in regional towns have got the time to talk, and why they really love talking about where they livehow it's very easy to make connections in regional towns (far more than it was for her in Melbourne and in Sydney)when new in town reaching out to people and asking other newbies where they came from, and chat about what their journey was likesome of the #casestudiesa woman who's moved from Melbourne to Apollo Bay and set up his psychology practice, she took her family, and young teenagers to #ApolloBay from #Brightona #physiotherapist who had a very big practice and was able to exit #Sydneythe #Accountant from the #NorthShore, who got out of Sydney, sold his home he bought the local #cobbler - he went #backtoschool  to learn how to repair shoesSo then she found herself in the middle of the fires in terrible push ties summer that we had. On October 21, 1978, a 20-year-old Frederick Valentich rented a single engine plane out of Victoria’s Moorabbin Airport with plans of heading to Tasmania’s King Island to catch seafood. But things took a terrifying turn when he noticed he was being followed by another aircraft. It has been 40 years since the young Aussie pilot disappeared over the Bass Strait and in that time no one has come any closer to finding out what happened to him.The only clue left behind was a radio conversation between him and Melbourne Airflight Service Controller, Steve Robey. It was 7pm when Valentich radioed in to ask if there were any known aircraft in the area, just after something zoomed overhead.Robey informed him that there was “no known traffic” in the area and inquired as to what type of plane it was.“I cannot affirm. It is four bright, it seems to me, like landing lights. The aircraft has just passed over me at least a thousand feet above,” Valentich said.As the transmission went on things got even more unnerving, with Valentich reporting that the mystery aircraft was “playing” with him.“It seems to me that he’s playing some sort of game,” he said.“He’s flying over me two, three times, at a time at speeds I could not identify.”The conversation continues with the controller trying to get more information about what the object actually is.Valentich describes it as long, metallic and with a green light. At one point the aircraft vanishes before suddenly reappearing on his other side. It’s at this point that Valentich says his final, terrifying words: “It is hovering and it is not an aircraft.”There is silence for 17 seconds before the transmission abruptly cuts off.An extensive search was conducted of the water and any surrounding land but Valentich nor any indication of a crash site was ever found.UFO enthusiasts suggest he was abducted by a UFO, while pilot's believe the inexperienced pilot was flying upside down and the lights he saw were his own reflections on the water before he crashed.Valentich had applied twice to the Royal Australian Air Force, and was rejected both times for inadequate educational experience. He was also studying to be a commercial pilot but had failed his examinations twice. He had also received several warnings, after flying once into a restricted zone in Sydney, and twice into clouds.Others point out that Valentich was perhaps suicidal and crashed his own plane and made up the UFO to create a story. Valentich was also known to have been studying UFOs previously and deathly scared that he would encounter one while flying.Adding to the mystery there were belated reports of a UFO sighting in Australia on the night of the disappearance.A farmer near Adelaide reportedly witnessed a 30m craft hovering over his property the morning after Valentich went missing. It is claimed the Cessna was stuck to the side of the craft, leaking oil. The farmer even scratched the plane’s registration number on to his tractor but never came forward with the information because he was ridiculed by the few friends he told. The farmer remains anonymous.Other witnesses claimed to have seen "an erratically moving green light in the sky" and in one instance a witnesses, located about 2km west of Apollo Bay, Victoria, stated that they saw a green light trailing or shadowing Valentich's plane, and that he was in a steep dive at the time.Search and Rescue crews tried to find his remains or that of his Cessna, but were unsuccessful at the time. Five years later, however, and engine cowel flap was located on the shores of Flinder's Island. In 1983, The Royal Australian Navy Research Laboratory confirmed the flap could have washed ashore on the island and that the part has been identified as having come from a Cessna 182 aircraft between a certain range of serial numbers which included Valentich's aircraft. It is not 100% proof, but it is very circumstantial. The only tangible thing that now remains is a small plague at Otway lighthouse commemorating his strange disappearance. We will be taking a short break over the holidays. Have a Merry Christmas and see you in the new year! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Front End Loader: Starting out in the Sydney suburb of Darlinghurst, Front End Loader’s music has been described as spiky and strange, the perfect thing to impale the lovely vocal harmonies they make and an even more appropriate complement to a dress-sense kindly described as ‘bizarre’. Over the years it’s carried them through six full-lengths, eight EPs and innumerable songs with titles such as “Weak As Piss” or “4 Star Heritage Arsehole”, which you’ll hear in this set. Unlike most Australian musicians of a similar vintage, Front End Loader never had the good grace to give-up. Their most recent album, “Ritardando” was released on their own Weeping Anus records and, in an embarrassing and somewhat confused gesture, took home the best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Album ARIA award for 2011. None of the band could afford -or probably could’ve been arsed, even if they did have the cash- to turn up and instead sent their slightly more industry friendly mate Lindsay from Frenzal Rhomb with these words: “As you were … please carry on … we mean you no harm. We will continue to write Rock Music that we enjoy, play shows when and where we can, and record and release this music as our time, money, and circumstances permit. None of these activities concern you so please, move along, and let us never speak of this again”. Recorded & Mixed by Branko Cosic. Recorded at The Prince Of Wales Hotel, Brisbane on the 17th of January, 2015. The Vasco Era: The Vasco Era emerged from Apollo Bay in 2004 and quickly staked their claim, doing the hard yards in the musically crowded city of Melbourne. Since the turn of the millenium Australia has seen more than its fair share of hard-rocking blues bands, but few have reached the heights or had the staying power of The Vasco Era, standing alongside Wolfmother and The Vines as blues-rocking heavyweights. Following the road to rock stardom, the band released two full-lengths with Universal Music, but in the end shrugged off the industry shackles to release their third album independently, in 2011. As an independent, self-titled release should, it ground down the gloss and chiseled back the glamour, leaving behind a raw and honest record that is the band’s truest document to date. They’ve taken some time off since then, but when they do play together, it’s with that same rawness and honesty in mind. The kind that is essential to making proper blues rock. Recorded & Mixed by Matthew Dever. Recorded at BIGSOUND Live, Brisbane on the 7th of September, 2011. Airing details: Originally via Zed Digital, 8-9pm, Friday 17 April 2015. Show production and engineering: Branko Cosic.

Sucks: Sucks sound like a pack of loveable brats. A three-piece from Sydney, the band describe their music as ‘shit punk’ – arguably a slight misnomer, as their aggressive music is highly listenable, arguably continuing the great Australian underground punk music tradition. Live Delay managed to catch the band when they were last up here, supporting Brisbane comrades Nikko at The Beetle Bar back in December 2013. It’s short and sweet but also immense. The band have got a forthcoming 7” available in October 2013 recorded with the help of Lincoln Brown from Housewives, but why not stay up and catch some of their live wizardry via Live Delay? Recorded by Darragh Murray. Mixed by Cameron Smith. Recorded at The Beetle Bar, Brisbane. The Vasco Era: Originally from Apollo Bay in Victoria, The Vasco Era launched themselves into the public consciousness after winning a university band competition way back in the early years of the noughties, winning over fans with their unique brand of bluesy rock and roll.. Gaining critical appeal for their recorded works along with their excellent live show, The Vasco Era released three well-received long players including their recent self-titled third record. The set we’ve got for you tonight shows them at their electric best, playing many of their big hits and a couple of interesting covers to boot. Taken from the Changing Lanes festival back in September 2011 in Surry Hills, Sydney, this set was kindly provided to Live Delay by our friends at FBi Radio in Sydney. Recorded at the Changing Lanes Festival, September 2011, Sydney. Recorded and Produced by FBi Radio Sydney.
