In this episode of Current Account, Clay is joined by Negar Mortazavi, a Journalist, Political Analyst and Senior Fellow at the Center for International Policy (CIP), for a clear, timely breakdown of the rapidly unfolding conflict in Iran. Less than two weeks after U.S. and Israeli strikes targeted key Iranian government and military sites, retaliatory actions have rippled across the region, impacting energy infrastructure, shipping lanes, and global markets. Negar explains what has transpired since the initial strikes, including the dramatic succession of Mojtaba Khamenei as Iran's new leader. She discusses the internal political dynamics in Tehran, the likelihood of domestic unrest, and how the Iranian government is framing this moment both internally and regionally. Clay and Negar also examine Iran's attempts to broaden the conflict geographically and the strategic calculations behind attacks on neighboring countries. The conversation closes with a look ahead: what escalation or de‑escalation could realistically look like, what all of this means for energy markets and geopolitical stability, and what next steps may be in store. This IIF Podcast was hosted by Clay Lowery, Executive Vice President, Research and Policy, with production and research contributions from Christian Klein, Digital Graphics and Production Associate and Miranda Silverman, Senior Program Assistant.

239 - Assessing post-fire structural damage in tunnels with Negar Elhami-Khorasani

Fire Science Show

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 18, 2026 61:55 Transcription Available

A tunnel can ride out a fire without collapsing (or even critical visible structural damage), but a question whether it is safe for operations, and what is its long-term residual fire resistance remains. With repair bills being in high seven-eight figures, this is more than just a theoretical question... In this episode we dig into the hard middle ground of fire damage post mild/large fires, and cover where modeling and fire science can help reducing the uncertainty and guiding decisions. With Professor Negar Elhami-Khorasani from University at Buffalo, we map how ventilation settings, tunnel slope, and fuel push temperatures into either safe or punishing regimes, and why spalling can turn a survivable event into a structural headache. We break spalling down to first principles—vapor pressure, thermal gradients, and restraint—then translate that into a practical method: update the section as concrete “disappears” so the thermal boundary moves and heat penetrates realistically. From there, we track damage you can act on: concrete volumes beyond 300°C, steel temperatures that risk incomplete recovery, and bond loss that forces major repairs. Just as important, we model through cooling, when heat keeps migrating and residual capacity sinks. The result isn't a guess; it's a bounded map of what to replace and why.We also take on the tactical questions that matter: How long would an extreme fire need to threaten collapse, given different soils and depths? What's the real value of polypropylene fibers in high-strength mixes? How should owners structure a fast, post-fire workflow—quick checks for reopening within days, followed by a deeper, simulation-informed durability plan? By pairing observed spalling and known operations with targeted heat transfer and mechanical analysis, you can reconstruct the event, communicate risk clearly, and spend repair budgets where they return the most resilience. If you care about structural fire engineering, tunnel safety, spalling mitigation, and performance-based design that reduces downtime, this conversation delivers a roadmap you can use.Further reading - recommended papers by Negar Elhami-Khorasani and her team:Structural fire behavior of tunnel sections: assessing the effects of full burnout and spalling effectsNumerical modeling of the fire behavior of reinforced concrete tunnel slabs during heating and coolingFire Damage Assessment of Reinforced Concrete Tunnel Linings----The Fire Science Show is produced by the Fire Science Media in collaboration with OFR Consultants. For decades, the field of scholarship that studies the law and practice of international organisations -also known as 'international institutional law'- has been marked by an intellectual quietism. Most of the scholarship tends to focus narrowly on providing 'legal' answers to 'legal' questions. For that reason, perspectives rarely engage with the insights of critical traditions of legal thought (for instance, feminist, postcolonial, or political economy-oriented perspectives) or with interdisciplinary contributions produced outside the field. Ways of Seeing International Organisations: New Perspectives for International Institutional Law (Cambridge UP, 2025) edited by Dr. Negar Mansouri & Dr. Daniel R. Quiroga-Villamarín challenges the narrow gaze of the field by bringing together authors across multiple disciplines to reflect on the need for 'new' perspectives in international institutional law. Highlighting the limits of mainstream approaches, the authors instead interrogate international organisations as pivots in processes of world-making. To achieve this, the volume is organised around four fundamental themes: expertise; structure; performance; and capital. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Send us a textWhat if a thriller could do more than raise your pulse—what if it could help you see the early signs of harm and chart a path back to yourself? We sit with writer-producer Bella Bahar and actress Shiva Nagar to explore Deadly Vow, a film that starts with romance, swerves into danger, and refuses to look away from the realities of domestic abuse. The conversation moves from Cannes panels to late-night calls between collaborators, revealing how a story powered by empathy becomes a movement for awareness, healing, and change.Shiva brings us inside her character's world, honoring the emotional truth of someone who once chose love and family before facing control, isolation, gaslighting, and escalating threats. Bella shares why she left a medical career to produce a project rooted in real experiences, drawing on years of advocacy through Paradise Charity and a deep belief that cinema can connect audiences to the hard-to-name patterns many endure in silence. Together, we talk about how independent film actually gets made—finding investors at markets, delivering to festivals and distributors, and protecting sensitive material—while keeping the mission front and center. At the core is sisterhood: women sharing knowledge instead of competing for the spotlight, translating industry jargon, showing up to meetings, and holding space when the work gets heavy. We discuss the first steps for someone living in fear, the importance of recognizing warning signs early, and what it means to break the cycle for children who learn what “normal” looks like at home. You'll hear why storytelling creates empathy, how validation can be a catalyst for healing, and the simple, fierce reminder: you are not what happened to you; you are what you rise from.Deadly Vow arrives November 14. Join us to learn the signs, support survivors, and back a film made with courage and care. If this conversation moved you, subscribe, share it with a friend, and leave a review—your voice helps more listeners find resources and hope. Thanks for listening! Listen to the live discussion for a more in-depth discussion of each question. Today's questions. Negar asks: How can I overcome my fear of being alone or being abandoned? Stan asks: What are your tips on living with someone suffering from anxiety or depression? They can sometimes be demanding or argumentative! Stan Asks: How can we protects ourselves from not feeling down during and after spending social time with anxious and / or depressed people because they express anxious or depressing thoughts to us. It seems to me that we must start to believe the distorted negative thoughts that the anxious or depressed person transmits to us, so we start to feel the same negative emotions the other person feels.   1. Negar asks: How can I overcome my fear of being alone or being abandoned? Thank you very much You know, doctor, one of the problems I have had since childhood was that I always worry about being alone and losing the people I love. My mind becomes conditioned and a lot of negative obsessive thoughts come to my mind, even the smallest irrelevant and random external events create a sign and increase stress But I will not stop trying But I am very eager to know what you think about the mind and the irrelevant and random patterns that it relates to negative events and how to get out of this cycle You can even put this as a podcast or clip on YouTube, I think it would be very welcome because I have seen many people who have this problem
