Send us a textListen To Alix's Latest EP "Bug"When songwriters reveal what shaped them, magic happens. Alix Page peels back the curtain on her artistic development in this intimate conversation about the films, music, and stories that built her creative foundation. From her early days leading worship at a Christian middle school to finding her voice at Orange County School of Arts, Alix shares how releasing her first single "Stripes" in 2020 marked the beginning of her musical journey. What truly transformed her approach was discovering Phoebe Bridgers' "Stranger in the Alps" – an album that showed her a new path forward. "I hadn't heard anything like that until then," Alix reveals, explaining how Bridgers' stripped-back authenticity gave her permission to simply show up and be herself. The conversation weaves through unexpected connections – like collaborating with Mark McKenna from "Sing Street" after years of using John Carney's film as pre-tour inspiration, or bumping into Bill Nighy the day after watching him in "Emma." These serendipitous moments mirror Alix's songwriting approach: finding beauty in life's small, meaningful intersections. What emerges is a portrait of an artist whose work blends the melancholic storytelling of Bridgers, the character depth of Jane Austen adaptations, and the emotional honesty of "500 Days of Summer." For fans of Alix's music or anyone fascinated by creative influence, this episode offers a window into how art inspires art across generations and mediums.Listen now to discover the cultural touchstones behind one of today's most captivating emerging songwriters – and perhaps gain insight into the influences shaping your own creative path.See Alix on TourFollow My Pop Five: @mypopfive on all platforms We'll see you next time. The words “private equity” bring forward images of Wall Street Titans drunk on power and leverage, sucking out profits from middle market businesses and leaving behind empty shells in their wake. While that makes a great narrative, it's not always true. Standing firmly on the other side of that narrative is Halle Capital. In today's conversation, I speak with both Jay Abramson, Senior Partner, and Mark McKenna, Principal, of Halle Capital. This episode is a real treat. Jay & Mark really dive in to the nuts and bolts of how Halle can build value in areas of the economy most investors pass right by. If you thought that pest control and environmental services were boring – think again! Jay and Mark demonstrate how a properly executed private equity strategy can drive profits for investors, enrich founders and develop great American businesses. This podcast was recorded on December 7, 2022. In 1934 South Australian policeman Bill McKinnon is sent to investigate a murder and make arrests in the so-called "dead heart" of the country. After some of his Aboriginal prisoners escape, he tracks one of the unarmed men to a sacred rock formation called Uluru, traps him in a cave, and shoots and kills him. My guest is University of Sydney history professor Mark McKenna, author of "Return to Uluru: The Hidden History of a Murder in Outback Australia". He discusses not only the specifics of the case, but the history of colonization of the Australian outback, and the impact it has had on this eighty-five-year-old tragedy. When Mark McKenna set out to write a history of the centre of Australia, he had no idea what he would discover. One event in 1934 – the shooting at Uluru of Aboriginal man Yokununna by white policeman Bill McKinnon, and subsequent Commonwealth inquiry – stood out as a mirror of racial politics in the Northern Territory at the time. But then, through speaking with the families of both killer and victim, McKenna unearthed new evidence that transformed the historical record and the meaning of the event for today.Return to Uluru brings a cold case to life. It speaks directly to the Black Lives Matter movement, but is completely Australian.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

●One of us is lying is a murder mystery novel written by Karen M. McManus. The is about five students who enter detention but only four leave alive. It is up to those four to find out who murdered Simon Kelleher. ●Simon Kelleher, Nate McCauley, Cooper Clay, Bronwyn Rojas and Addelaide Prentiss enter detention after being framed by having phones in their bags. ●They are discussing stereo types for each of them, and Simon says, ‘I'm the omniscient narrator.' He takes a sip of ‘water' and starts to have an allergic reaction. Later Bronwyn gets a call saying Simon has died.●The four students get the nickname the ‘The murder club', and are constantly being interviewed by the police. The Murder club put all the clues together with the help of Maeve, Bronwyn's younger sister, who hacks into the admin page for About that. ●The story starts on September 24th and ends on February 15th making the story last for four months and twenty-one days. The ending was ordinary and boring, and the opening was slow with lots of detail and dialogue. The main characters are Cooper, Addy, Bronwyn and Nate.●They are all very different in the way they act and their personality. The characters aren't described in much detail. I found Cooper the most interesting, but Bronwyn was the most sympathetic. Addy changed throughout the story starting of as a typical high school popular girl and then ended with a cooler style. The story was written in first person, and this was very important as the perspective was constantly changing. ●The story was good because the plot was basic, and the characters made the story feel real. My favourite moment in the story was when the murder club found out who was running About that after Simon's death because all the pieces came together perfectly. ●The ending could have been improved because it was slow and there was a build up for nothing. If I could change the end, I would make it so that the build-up effected the ending. ●But maybe not all hope is lost.. since a second season of the show is in production and will soon be available for your viewing pleasure..★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

This episode we discuss the story of the Sydney Cove, a ship that set sail from Calcutta bound for its eponymous port in 1796. The Sydney Cove never quite made it the whole way, but after countless misadventures just under half of her crew did. Join us as we discuss a story that is not only all but unbelievable but is one of the most significant stories of first contact between First Nations people and visitors from across the British Empire. This tale was more or less lost to time for much of the 20th century but from the unearthing of the shipwreck in 1977 there was no putting this tale back in the rum bottle, as it were. The original inspiration for this story came from reading Jock Serong's work of historical fiction: Preservation. The factual heavy lifting was largely courtesy of Mark McKenna's book: From the Edge; Australia's Lost Histories. If you'd like to read the full text of William Clark's published account of their journey you can find it, and an assortment of other relevant correspondence, here. And if you know where we an get a carton of James Squire's Preservation Ale we'd love to hear from you!

Today I talked to Mark McKenna about his new book Return to Uluru: A Killing, Hidden history, a Story that Toes to the Heart of the Nation (Black Inc, 2021) When McKenna set out to write a history of the centre of Australia, he had no idea what he would discover. One event in 1934 - the shooting at Uluru of Aboriginal man Yokunnuna by white policeman Bill McKinnon, and subsequent Commonwealth inquiry - stood out as a mirror of racial politics in the Northern Territory at the time. But then, through speaking with the families of both killer and victim, McKenna unearthed new evidence that transformed the historical record and the meaning of the event for today. As he explains, 'Every thread of the story connected to the present in surprising ways.' In a sequence of powerful revelations, McKenna explores what truth-telling and reconciliation look like in practice. Return to Uluru brings a cold case to life. It speaks directly to the Black Lives Matter movement, but is completely Australian. Recalling Chloe Hooper's The Tall Man, it is superbly written, moving, and full of astonishing, unexpected twists. Ultimately it is a story of recognition and return, which goes to the very heart of the country. At the centre of it all is Uluru, the sacred site where paths fatefully converged. 'I feel sure that it will become an Australian classic, not the first of its kind, but certainly the most powerful narrative I have read of frontier injustice and its resonance in our lives today.'-Marcia Langton Professor Mark McKenna, Department of History, University of Sydney, specialising in Australian political and cultural history and Aboriginal history. Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams have spent a lifetime backing or supporting a variety of incredible musicians. From Bob Dylan to Levon Helm, and every bluegrass, country, Americana, or folk artists that you can imagine, they have cemented themselves as incredible talents in any genre they choose. They are also incredibly humble, and sincere people that exemplify the reason they were recruited to be the lead characters in a 10 part docuseries. The Mark Moskowitz's creation, It Was The Music, explores Mark's love of music and what the music means to a variety of musicians that are featured in the series. Larry and Teresa seem to be the archetype of the embodiment of good music and the reason that Mark focused this series around them. From Teresa's authentic Tennessee roots to the way that Larry, a New York city boy, lives inside the authentic music of the Americana landscape, they are both fascinating and the series breaths life each time they share different pieces of their lives with us onscreen. Special thanks to Mark McKenna for all the help making this interview happen.
