In London, the cops caught serial killer John Christie, which meant they'd sent an innocent man to the gallows for two murders. In a weird coincidence, a similar failure of justice was about to play out in Adelaide, where serial monster John Balaban had already been set free by the courts to kill again. Meanwhile, the Red Scare was at fever pitch, with leftist Aussies protesting against the imminent execution in the US of convicted Soviet spies Julius and Ethel Rosenberg. Also in the US under McCarthyism, academic freedom was under attack at Columbia University. In 1950, a man named Timothy Evans of South Wales is charged with the murder of his young wife and infant daughter. He told the court he was innocent, but no one believed him. He told the court the man responsible was John Reginald Christie—a man who testified against him for the prosecution, ultimately leading to Tim Evans' death. Three years later, police would discover that John Christie himself was in fact a serial killer who confessed to murdering not only Tim Evans' wife, but his own. In November of 1949, 24 year old Timothy Evans informed the UK police that his wife, Beryl, had died and he had disposed of her body in a sewer drain. Then he told them his neighbor, John Christie, had actually murdered his wife. The bodies of Beryl and her 13 month old were found on the property, and Timothy was executed for the murder of their daughter. Four years later, several other bodies were found on the property and it was discovered that John Christie had murdered several women over the years.
