About two weeks ago, we unveiled a new take on the classic series, Missile Command. The teaser is just that, but there's so much more to say about the game! Fortunately, the team that worked on the title was kind enough to join me and talk through a deeper look at the game. My guests are Dave Proctor (Executive Producer on MCD), Tom McCall (Creative Director on MCD), and Mark Perloff (Senior Producer at Atari). In 1983, Marvel Comics launched a magazine about video games. This was not a comic book; it was a magazine. (Okay, it was a tiny comic book-sized magazine. Happy now?) It lasted just seven issues, utterly failing to make a blip, even though it was in fact called Blip. So today we're flipping through the first issue of Blip, trying to make sense of it all. On the cover is actor Matthew Laborteaux (Little House on the Prairie, Whiz Kids), looking very upset that we interrupted his game of Tron. Inside we learn the favorite video games of more Hollywood stars, assuming you define "star" as "someone who appeared on The Facts of Life once or twice." We also learn about Missile Command, Centipede, Dig Dug, Pitfall, and Bubble Yum. (That last one might just be an advertisement.) Sure, there were much bigger, much better video game magazines around in the early 80s. But only one was Stan Lee-approved. So stick with Blip, true believers.
Featuring: Ashgar, Belghast, Grace, Kodra, Tamrielo, and Thalen Hey Folks! We are back after a week off last week due to too many being out. When we do one of those weeks missed we have a truly stupid number of topics to discuss, and this week is no exception. We start off talking a little bit about Xenoblade Chronicles X getting a Switch release date, and Utopia Must Fall the game that you get when you make Missile Command a Roguelike. Related we also talk a bit about Nodebuster which is going for a somewhat similar thing. Bel and Grace talk about their experiences with Wayfinder, a game that completely changed its business model from freemium cash grab to buy the box. Tam talks about an interesting situation of being in a deeply collaborative “competition” and how cool those moments are. Ash shares his thoughts about Windblown the new co-op ARPG from the folks behind Dead Cells. Tam shares his thoughts about I Am Your Beast and Kodra in a bit more detail about Tactical Breach Wizards. Bel talks about his recent adventures in Return of Reckoning, a fan-run Warhammer Online server that itself has been up and running for a decade now after the official game closed down in 2013. Topics Discussed: Xenoblade Chronicles X Switch Announcement Utopia Must Fall Nodebuster Wayfinder Competitions that Aren't Windblown I Am Your Beast Tactical Breach Wizards Warhammer Return of Reckoning

On this episode, British journalist, author and video game critic for The Observer Simon Parkin reaches into the more obscure corners of Amis's bibliography to dissect a dazzling collection of arcade game reviews published circa 1982. Entitled Invasion of the Space Invaders, this glossy publication starts with Amis's recollection of the moment these machines stole his heart, after a Space Invaders console makes its debut in a bar in the South of France. It goes on to chart the best arcade games of the era, offering Amis's review of everything from Pac-Man to Donkey Kong, to Frogger, to Missile Command. We also get his firsthand observations from the scuffed floors of New York's seediest video parlours of who this new medium is attracting, why it is so captivating to its devotees, and what it is costing both them and society at large.Simon explains how Amis first fuelled his aspirations to write as a freelance journalist, and why his work remains both aspirational and relatable to this day.FOLLOW US ON TWITTER/ X: @mymartinamis Hosted on Acast. Dr Becky Alexis-Martin is a pacifist academic at the University of Bradford. Her work explores nuclear warfare, social justice, humanitarian and environmental issues, and human rights. Her expertise is focused on nuclear geographies and decolonising disarmament policy in the Pacific. She has authored over sixty-five news articles, book chapters, and peer-reviewed articles. Her first book, “Disarming Doomsday: The Human Impact of Nuclear Weapons Since Hiroshima”, critically considers the social, cultural, and spatial harms perpetuated by nuclear warfare and was the recipient of the 2020 L.H.M. Ling Outstanding Dr. Becky Alexis Martin explains how geographers identified isolated spaces for nuclear testing, often disregarding the presence of indigenous communities. Dr. Martin also delves into the geotechnologies used in nuclear warfare, highlighting the military origins of technologies like GPS and satellite imaging. She discusses the use of cartography in public safety nuclear preparedness initiatives, pointing out how it was used to downplay the destructiveness of nuclear weapons. The conversation also touches on the connection between Cold War nuclear strategy, game theory, and modern post-apocalyptic computer games, highlighting the tendency to abstract war to a game. Dr. Martin emphasizes the importance of geography in understanding and addressing the impacts of nuclear weapons and the role of geographers in contributing to a nuclear-free world. She also shares her experience as a delegate and speaker at the United Nations for the Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, underscoring the significance of the treaty in promoting nuclear disarmament and supporting affected communities. 00:00 Introduction to Dr. Becky Alexis Martin 00:14 Exploring Nuclear Geographies and Decolonizing Disarmament Policy 00:27 Discussion on Dr. Martin's Book 'Disarming Doomsday' 01:07 The Role of Geography in Nuclear Warfare 03:08 Impact of Nuclear Tests on Indigenous Communities 04:23 The Role of Geotechnologies in Nuclear Warfare 05:11 The Dehumanization in Nuclear Test Locations 06:12 The Class Character of Nuclear Testing 07:32 The 2021 Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons 09:47 The Role of Geotechnologies in Modern Warfare 12:01 The Use of Cartography in Masking the Destructiveness of Nuclear Weapons 18:47 The Connection Between Cold War Nuclear Strategists and Modern Computer Games 32:53 The Role of Geography in a Nuclear Free World 34:51 Dr. Martin's Experience at the United Nations 39:55 The Importance of Geography in Understanding and Resolving Conflict 46:40 Conclusion: The Future of Geography in a Nuclear Free World Questions You quote the geographer Yves Lacoste: 'Geography serves, first and foremost, to wage war', and mention the work of Halford Mackinder. How has the academic discipline of geography been used to assist in the development of nuclear weapons, particularly in relation to indigenous peoples upon whose land many nuclear tests were carried out? Nuclear Geotechnologies: Geographical Information Systems (GIS), GPS, Remote Sensing, spatial modeling, laser range finding, digital mapping, satellite imaging; are the geotechnologies of nuclear warfare simply geography under another name? Mythologies of Risk: How has cartography, such as public safety nuclear preparedness initiatives under the guise of 'Protect and Survive', been used to mask the destructiveness of nuclear weapons? Apocotainment: You draw a connection between Cold War nuclear strategist Hermann Kahn, Game Theory, War Gaming, geotechnologies such as topographic modelling and environment generation, and the eventual production of computer games such as 'Missile Command' and modern post-apocalyptic computer games such as 'Fallout'. Would you agree with the claim that the common thread linking each of these elements together is 'Apocotainment': a tendency to abstract war to a game? --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/hypervelocity/message

Totally awesome video games! That's what Joysticks promises. Eugene, McDorfus and King Vidiot are running interference while we chew up the scenery of this 1983 T&A buffet. This movie has everything you do AND don't want you in your early 80s celluloid war chest. Scott McGinnis and Corrine Bohrer round out the casting staples of any great, but forgettable 80s flick. Joe Don Baker must have been blackmailed to be in this movie. Come to think of it, he was blackmailed IN this movie as well. Art imitating life...imitating art? Who knows. I'm as lost as that senile wizard wandering around the Gauntlet landscape with this summary anyway. PAC-MAN, Galaga, Defender, Asteroids, Zaxxon, Tempest, Two Tigers, Dragon's Lair, Pole Position, Track & Field, Star Castle, Centipede, Dig Dug, Tron, Missile Command, Donkey Kong, Robotron, Frogger, Burger Time, Rampage, 1942, Berzerk, Q*Bert, Joust, Rolling Thunder, Contra, Double Dragon.....that's enough characters for a great summary, right?

Video games are typically categorized according to their hardware platform. This traditionally includes arcarde video games, console games, and computer (PC) games. A video game is an electroic game that involves interaction with a user interface or input device. These devices include such things as a joystick, controller, keyboard, or motion sensing device. The first video game prototypes in the 1950s and 1960s were simple extensions of electronic games using video-like output from large, room-sized mainframe computers. The first consumer video game was the arcade video game Computer Space in 1971. On this episode of the Soul Forge, Shawn and Leah share some of their memories of video games. Leah's first system was the Commodore 64. Her first game was The Sky is Falling, in which you had to catch fruit. Shawn remembers playing a lot of Missile Command on the Atari 2600. In addition to these systems, they also had the Sega Genesis, the original Nintendo Entertainment System and the Super NES. Naturally, over time, many other systems emerged. These include the various XBOX and Play Station consoles. Nintendo has also released a huge number of video game systems. Shawn and Leah mention a wide variety of video games. Some of these are (in addition to The Sky is Falling and Missile Command) Earthworm Jim, Toe Jam & Earl, Duck Hunt and Rock n' Roll Racing. There is also discussion around the various Super Mario titles, including Mario Kart. We also hear about Apex, Minecraft, Hollow Knight, and quite a bit about Five Nights at Freddy's. Video games can be great fun. They can bring the whole family together. We used to spend our weekends renting games. Now we all have access to emulators, walk-throughs and guides. When we were kids, we were lucky to have a game genie! This week's podcast promo: Metal Geeks
Dave Sherman joined Atari shortly prior to Nolan Bushnell's departure and was at the company through its precipitous near-collapse and subsequent restructuring during the infamous market crash of '83 and '84. Sherman worked alongside Dave Theurer on iconic such as I, Robot and Missile Command, and shares many an anecdote about those early days, including soundly beating Bushnell at his own predilection, the strategy board game, Go. After Atari, Dave engineered a dual-purpose CAD system, generating fluid, texture-mapped polygon graphics for videogame application a good eight years before Sony ruled the roost with the Playstation.

I didn't think it was possible, but somehow they managed to ruin Missile Command. How'd they do it? Well, they...eff that...listen to the show if you want to know how the impossible became possible; however, if you don't care about Missile Command, worry not, there's plenty of other stuff discussed on this week's episode, including more Star Trek (new for me/old for you Star Trek), and a handful of games that range from not that bad to, "I think I'm going to be sick," so strap in and get ready for one hell of a bumpy ride. (And if you haven't already, or are a listener and not a watcher, please like, subscribe, hit the bell, and all that jazz; it may not seem like much, but it goes a long way in helping support the show and site in general. I would appreciate it greatly.)

I say this too much, but I thank you for being patient with me as I navigate through my lovely depression. This long overdue episode features the homebrew game AVCStec Challenge by Simon Quernhorst and Paul Slocum. It's based on the very difficult (to me) Aztec Challenge by Paul Norman, for the Commodore 64. I hope that you enjoy the episode. Next up is Cookie Monster Munch by Atari and the Children's Computer Workshop. Please send any feedback on this or any previous game to 2600gamebygame@gmail.com by August 16th. Así, os contamos cositas de HORIZON: FORBIDDEN WEST, de SIFU, de THE KING OF FIGHTERS XV y de THE LAST STAND: AFTERMATH, a la par que echamos la vista atrás para recordar los belicosos miedos de la guerra fría que nos traía el inefable MISSILE COMMAND. Say hello to the second episode of FIRST!, or maybe it's the first episode of SECOND!!? Who's to say? I am. I am who can say either way. And I say nay. It is just the second episode of FIRST! and that's that. Speaking of this episode, this episode is all about Cake Invaders, a cute mashup of Space Invaders and Missile Command that's a good time while it lasts, even if said time is only about 15 minutes. With nothing but an arcade mode and the ability to chase high scores, your mileage will vary greatly; though, since it's priced at only $5.99, you should be able to get your money's worth out of it. If nothing else, you'll bag yourself some quick and easy achievements.

Hot off the heels of his successful Missile Command game, David Theurer used inspiration from a childhood nightmare to create what many considered to be his magnum opus, Tempest, and provided another legendary title for the Golden Age of Arcade. However, Tempest had a rather interesting beginning that could have lead to a disastrous release, if Theurer hadn't changed course. Plus today's episode features special guest music from Night Rider 87, if you are interested in their music, check out the following links and follow them on social media. Released by Atari in June of 1981, David Theurer created the legendary game, but one that has a no win scenario. The game was released during the middle of The Cold War, between the USA and the USSR. It hit a little too close to home for the developers, but they were trying to convey a message to the player. What message was that? Tune in to find out. In this episode we talk to Steve Golson, hacker/engineer for GCC and creator of the hardware that converted Pac-Man into Ms. Pac Man. In part one of a two part conversation, we chat about the era of coin-op “speed-up kits” and how GCC's revolutionary ideas for converting "Missile Command " into “Super Missile Attack” led to the upstart company becoming Atari’s Secret Weapon. Don't miss this one! Golson is an amazing story teller! [Digital Drift 2015] One of our favourite movies of all time gets its long overdue deep discussion. I noticed something in editing this. We skip over talking about the film itself. This was what troubled me into holding it back an additional week to record additional material and deliver you this extended edition. We treat matters as though you, like us have watched this movie a hundred times. You know what happens, why and how impressive Cameron is at conveying the action and we delve into the subtleties and lore, starting off with taking it to task over the time travel, but proceeding into this story as a parable for unilateral disarmament. Joshua Garrity joins us once again to explore this cybernetic opera, in which Los Angeles of the 1990s is as much a character as any of the vibrant figures onscreen. Many thanks to the crew at Extra Credits for allowing us to use a segment of theirs on the arcade game Missile Command.
