Join me, the Natural Medic, as I unravel the geological mysteries etched into the breathtaking vistas of the Islands in the Sky District. From the dizzying heights of the Grand Viewpoint Overlook, feast your eyes on the intricate canyons crafted by the Colorado River, where the river's legacy has carved stories into the very rocks we stand upon. We'll traverse the historical White Rim Road, peering into the storied layers of Kayenta and Wingate, and marvel at the stoic LaSalle Mountains towering in the background. Even without stepping foot on every trail, the allure of the park's hidden gems, like the Mesa Arch and the enigmatic upheaval dome, will captivate your imagination. As we navigate these awe-inspiring terrains, we'll delve into the mystery that surrounds the upheaval dome—an ongoing debate of meteorite impact versus salt dome uplift that keeps scientists on their toes. The U.S. EPA has announced that it reached a settlement with the Navajo Tribal Utility Authority that means the NTUA has agreed to improve wastewater treatment facilities in three communities in northern Arizona. The Department of Justice filed a complaint on behalf of the EPA that says the facilities violated Clean Water Act permits meant to protect human health and the environment by discharging wastewater not treated to proper levels into washes across the tribal nation. It also says the NTUA failed to maintain their facilities' sewage systems and prevent sewage spills. The roughly $100 million settlement will mean some short-term and long-term upgrades to facilities in Chinle, Kayenta and Tuba City that serve about 20,000 people, mostly Navajo citizens. And four seats on the Cortez City Council are open in the upcoming election on April 2. Nomination packets are available at City Hall, and are due this Monday, January 22.

Environmental groups that work to protect the Black Mesa region in northeast Arizona say that Peabody Energy has not done a sufficient job of reclaiming the now-defunct Kayenta coal mine, and shouldn't be refunded millions of dollars in bond money. Recently, the coal company Peabody Energy applied for the release of $17.3 million, part of a larger bond held by the Office of Surface Mining, or the OSM, for parts of the Kayenta Mine that have undergone some phases of reclamation. The office is under the Department of the Interior, and is tasked with ensuring coal mines adequately restore land damaged during strip mining. The bonds were posted with the OSM by Peabody to be returned only after the mine lands had been reclaimed to certain standards. In late August, the OSM held a public meeting on the bond release at the Navajo chapter house in Forest Lake where some community members also raised concerns about the long-term impact of mining on local water resources.

On Friday, a home health care company held an informational meeting in Tuba City, Arizona, on the federal benefits available to some Navajo coal miners who have black lung disease. The meeting, hosted by Positive Nature Homecare, was the latest on the subject of black lung among coal miners in the Navajo Nation. Willa Mae Jones is a member of the Navajo Nation and a health outreach worker at Canyonlands Healthcare in Chilchinbeto. She attended Friday's meeting to meet with coal miners who largely worked at the Kayenta and Black Mesa mines in northeastern Arizona. Jones says her husband was a dragline operator at the Kayenta coal mine. When her son was growing up, she says she advised him not to follow in his father's footsteps. And the U.S. Department of Agriculture is offering grants for people that experienced discrimination in the agency's farm loan programs.

Coal miners went to the meeting to learn more about their eligibility for federal black lung benefits. Justin Tsosie, a former coal miner and union representative who worked at the Kayenta surface Mine in Arizona, says he frequently encountered dust when he worked as a serviceman at the mine. Before it closed in 2019, the Kayenta Mine provided high-paying jobs to Navajo coal miners who lived nearby. But some say that working there, and at other coal mines across the Navajo Nation, has given miners lasting health problems, including black lung disease. Our radio partners at KSJD went on a tour of the Kayenta Surface Mine in northeastern Arizona with a former miner. And, states that rely on the Colorado River have come up with a short-term proposal to cut their use in exchange for federal funding. Cronkite News: On the Navajo Nation, a horseback ride to the polls encourages people to vote

Protect the Sacred is part of a nationwide effort to find new and creative ways to engage with young Indigenous voters. Earlier this year, they skated to the polls for the primary election. And as Cronkite News' Athena Ankrah reports, this month they gathered in Kayenta, Arizona, to ride on horseback to the polls ahead of the midterm election. ——– Early on a recent Saturday morning, a group of activists, advocates and actors mounted horses and rode through the red rock of El Capitán Mountain in Monument Valley. By lunchtime, they made it to Kayenta Rodeo Grounds on the Navajo Nation. Black mesas and the wide open desert surround the arena. Local Diné families sit in the bleachers. There, a green flag of a rider on horseback with the words “Reclaim Your Future” waves in the breeze. Mo Brings Plenty is a Lakota actor from South Dakota. He says events like “Ride to the Polls” can unite Black, Indigenous and people of color. “it's about coming together, it's about creating allies. It's about making many voices one large voice. And we're way overdue with that.” Of the 400,000 formally enrolled Diné, only 70,000 are registered to vote in Arizona. “We just recently had the primary election… Unfortunately, on the Navajo Nation, even though we are the biggest tribe, we only had about 13% of our people, our registered voters, come out to vote.” That's Nathaniel Brown, the Navajo Nation Council Delegate for Kayenta and two other communities. He says in-person voting on the reservation is challenging. “Some of our people from Navajo Mountain, when they come out to vote at the county and state level, they have to travel four hours one way.” Brown says mail-in ballots can be even trickier. “Out here in rural Navajo Nation -- which the whole nation is -- we don't have physical addresses for the most part." That's why grassroots organizer Allie Young decided to take steps to get young people and elder members of the community to the polls. “I's a demonstration to say that even though different laws have been passed the past couple of years that have aimed to suppress our votes, especially in BIPOC communities, that we're not going to let that happen. We're still going to, you know, show up in our power. And by voting, we're reclaiming our power.” Young led the first ride to the polls in 2020. This year to emphasize the importance of voting, young invited speakers from across the country, including Rogelio Diaz. He's the co-founder of Connecting Compton, a nonprofit in California. “At the end of the day, some of the rules that exist right now are not working for us. And so we have to begin to figure out a strategy and vote for things that are going to work out for us. I think it's a necessity that we all vote, we make the difference.” For attendee Joy Wero, the event reminded her of her own family's struggle for suffrage. “My grandmother, I'm pretty sure her and her ancestors were, you know, fighting and putting their lives on the line just to hear their voices heard. But yet, I'm here and all we have to do is register, sign and register to vote.” Though voter turnout has historically been low here, numbers have spiked over the last two presidential elections. Voters on the Navajo and nearby Hopi reservations cast nearly 20,000 more votes in 2020 than in 2016, according to election data. The ride to the polls event is just one of several efforts to mobilize the Diné voting bloc before the midterm election on November 8. And when people cast their ballots on the Navajo Nation this year… the “I voted” stickers will be written in Diné Bizaad; the Navajo language. Phyllis Stanley is an ultra runner based out of the Pacific Northwest (PNW), prime country for glorious mountain trails.  She and her two boys live in a small town called Montesano which is about 43 miles west of Olympia, Olympic National Park  and the Olympic Mountains along with the Cascades Mountains.     Phyllis was born and raised in Arizona on the Navajo Nation just outside of small reservation town called Kayenta.  It was a complete rural setting without typical American household amenities like running water, indoor plumbing, and electricity.  Growing up, there was no shortage of work or chores, daily and year round, because her family owned a huge herd of cattle, horses, sheep and goats.   Phyllis' parents practiced traditional Navajo spiritual customs, so her days always began with early morning runs to the east to greet the holy spirits before sunrise.  Rain, sleet, or hail, as a family, they always ran together (unless you were in bed with the flu, of course!).  Every summer Phyllis, her parents and siblings also planted a big field of corn, but not your average sized garden plot, it was an acre corn field! They also planted and harvested variety of squash, melons and other vegetables.  Early in 1986, Phyllis' dad passed away in an automobile accident. Her mom did her best to continue but had to downsize because it was too much to manage.    After losing many very dear loved ones, trail running became a way to help Phyllis grieve.  Phyllis lost her mom in 2012, followed by an older sister two years later, to cancer.  Then in 2018, Phyllis lost her brother JB after a bout with stomach cancer in 2018.  Losing her brother turned her world upside down because he was an inspirational person in her life.  Phyllis dove into trail running as a way to cope with onsetting depression and it became only thing that was helpful in processing her grief.  Phyllis completed her first 50 miler on July 27, 2019, exactly a year to the day that her brother passed away.  It was the White River 50 which takes place in the shadow of Mount Rainier (think lots of elevation gain). Phyllis was crewed by her late fiancè (along with her two sons), Luis, who passed away after a hard fought battle with cancer last year, Oct 2020 - just two weeks shy of his 43rd birthday.     Of the last few years, Phyllis says, “It's been a trying time but also survive-able thanks to ultra running.  It's definitely given me a new perspective and appreciation for loving with a full heart because we just don't know when is our last day on this planet.”   ****To follow the Phyllis visit  her on Instagram: @phyllis.stanley (https://www.instagram.com/phyllis.stanley/)  ***      ****Host, Coach Pilar Arthur-Snead, https://linktr.ee/mindfulrunner **** Leave me a message at https://anchor.fm/pilar-arthur-snead/message***        ***Please Like and Subscribe to The Last Tenth Podcast on You Tube: https://bit.ly/37foa2f  ***Listen toThe Last Tenth Podcast on:         Anchor.fm (https://anchor.fm/pilar-arthur-snead),  Apple Podcasts (https://apple.co/3lXB5ek),   Please be sure to leave your positive feedback and 5 star review on Apple Podcasts!   Google Podcasts (https://bit.ly/3oqGUTo),    Spotify (https://spoti.fi/37Oowgm) and so much more! *** ****THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT!! *****If you like what you've heard on the show, please consider contributing to or sponsoring the show.
