What does it truly means to be content in your own skin? It's tempting to put so-called "successful" people on a pedestal, but the reality is often much more complicated. Many high achievers are driven by inner turmoil. Adrian Chiles, broadcaster and former host of The One Show, shares insights from his conversations with high performers on BBC Radio 5 Live, many of whom have also appeared on this podcast - from Jonny Wilkinson to Ronnie O'Sullivan. We explore why chasing traditional success often falls short of delivering happiness and why the state of flow - the state of full immersion in the present - is a key to genuine satisfaction, as well as high performance. My book Champion Thinking: How To Find Success Without Losing Yourself draws on some of my favourite interviews over the last six years. In it, I seek to challenge our ideas about 'success', and where peace, joy and fulfilment are truly to be found. 'This book captures the magic of being in flow . . . England rugby stalwart Lewis Moody was known for his all-action approach which left everything on the pitch. You don't get the nickname 'mad dog' for nothing.Yet it was off the pitch that Lewis Moody had to overcome his biggest challenges, most notably having to deal with ulcerative colitis as a young player in an environment where sharing your vulnerabilities wasn't exactly encouraged.Lewis credits these obstacles as opportunities to overcome difficult things and his incredible career is testament to that approach, as he went on to play in two world cup finals, coming off the bench in 2003 to win the line-out that set up Jonny Wilkinson's winning drop-goal.He also discusses how a ‘pay it forward' approach helped him with the difficult transition into retirement and also led to his current role as a performance coach, where he now applies his own experiences and observations in sports culture into other areas of performance. "I don't mind what happens. This is the essence of inner freedom" - Jiddu KrishnamurtiAcceptance is being in alignment with the present moment. When we do mind what happens, we have judged the situation – 'this should not be happening' – and are now reacting to it from that perspective. We really only have two options when it comes to what is. We can either be aligned with it or against it. And we know which choice we've made by how we feel. If there is fear, anger, expectation, anxiety, doubt, or remorse – we are resisting what is.The amount of evidence and research that shows self-acceptance is positively correlated with subjective wellbeing and self-worth is vast. And yet, many people don't understand the 'how' of acceptance. Is it about speaking to ourselves positively, or saying affirmations? No. Acceptance is about letting go of resistance. When we stop rejecting parts of ourselves that we don't like, including uncomfortable thoughts and feelings, peace is free to emerge. But more than that, acceptance isn't something the mind can really do. True acceptance lies in the aware space before the mind. When we can recognise that acceptance is our nature, we can face our inner and outer experience from a position of strength, rather than weakness. Accept and respond, don't resist and react. In this episode we are hearing from the following people, with links to their full length episodes:Jonny Wilkinson: https://pod.fo/e/16ff5eNon-Dual philosopher Rupert Spira: https://pod.fo/e/16ff5cLucy Gossage: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p08p2mktChampion Thinking: How To Find Success Without Losing Yourself - is now on general release. Listen to Chris Ashton, Tom Wood, Freddie Burns, Alex Goode, Mark Wilson and Jonny Wilkinson discuss moments in their career when it was tough, and how they found themselves overcoming obstacles to achieve their dreams. Adversity can often breed the qualities needed to be very successful and here are England Internationals describing how difficult it was for them to become the players they became. A great listen for anyone thinking success is easy to come by and an especially crucial listen to any young person looking to become a professional athlete.
