Welcome back to another magical episode of Bad Dads Film Review! Today, we're diving into the charming, whimsical, and downright delightful world of Enchanted.Enchanted, released in 2007 and directed by Kevin Lima, cleverly combines the fantastical elements of animated fairy tales with the gritty reality of live-action. This Disney film begins in the animated world of Andalasia, where the typical fairy tale tropes are turned on their head when our heroine, Giselle, is thrust into the real world of New York City.Amy Adams stars as Giselle, a classic Disney princess with a twist. Her world is turned upside down when she's banished from Andalasia by an evil queen and finds herself in the bustling, not-so-magical streets of New York. There, she encounters Robert Philip (Patrick Dempsey), a divorce lawyer and single dad, who's as cynical as she is naively optimistic.Enchanted stands out for its seamless blend of animation and live-action, bringing together the best of both worlds. The film is a playful nod to Disney classics while also offering a fresh, modern take on the genre. This film is a delightful watch for the whole family. It's got romance, comedy, catchy songs, and just the right amount of nostalgia. Enchanted is clever in its self-awareness, poking fun at fairy tale clichés while still honouring the beloved Disney formula. The result is a film that's as appealing to adults as it is to kids.We were surprisingly all quite positive about this one. You might have expected us to give this a right kicking, but not the case! So there! So, whether you're in it for the nostalgia, the laughs, or just a feel-good family movie night, Enchanted is a perfect pick. Join us as we delve into the magical, musical world of Andalasia and New York City, right here on Bad Dads Film Review.

Greta Gerwig's mega-hit BARBIE is both a satirical sendup of and a loving tribute to the titular fashion doll, which is a not-unheard-of storytelling approach, though few stories attempting to strike the balance have done so with such direct involvement of the corporate entity responsible for their existence. That element of Mattel's BARBIE is what led us to Disney's ENCHANTED, Kevin Lima's 2007 live-action fractured fairy tale that prods at Disney Princess tropes without quite upending them. This week we're joined by Vulture critic Jen Chaney to consider what's made the comparatively slight ENCHANTED such a touchstone for some viewers, the areas where its gentle subversion works and where it falters, whether there's anything redeeming in the film's messy final act, and, naturally, what Abel Ferrara's ENCHANTED might look like. And we continue the trope talk in Feedback, inspired by a listener's response to a certain GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 gag. Like its obvious predecessor WAITING FOR GUFFMAN, the new THEATER CAMP is an improv-heavy mockumentary about a cash-strapped theatrical operation — but in this case at least there's real talent in the mix, thanks to the many gifted child actors populating the AdirondACTS summer program for aspiring young performers. This leaves THEATER CAMP's adult cast, some of them former child actors themselves, free to lean into self-satirizing buffoonery while maintaining a degree of sincere admiration for theatrical weirdos everywhere. We dig into the ups and downs of that tonal balance in THEATER CAMP before comparing it to GUFFMAN's own blend of affection and condescension toward amateur theater, the people who make it, and the audiences who respond to it, as well as how the mockumentary style has evolved in the years separating the two films. And in Your Next Picture Show, we use the presence of Molly Gordon and Ayo Edebiri in THEATER CAMP as an excuse for a mini bonus episode on a recent season of TV that also features both: THE BEAR.  Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about WAITING FOR GUFFMAN, THEATER CAMP, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. [School of Movies 2023] A long-planned return to a far-too-often overlooked Disney animated classic released quietly in 1995. A passion project of Jeffrey Katzenberg that wound up being helmed by Kevin Lima, director of Tarzan and later Enchanted. From the outside it seems like a fun finale to the 78-episode syndicated wacky animated show 'Goof Troop', but as it turns out, this one hit way closer to home than most of Disney's more fantastical fare for a lot of kids who grew up watching it on VHS and DVD and love it intensely.  I've promised Daniel Floyd of Extra Frames that if we ever covered it he would be there, and thanks to Ryan Estrada of Big Data (who adores it just as much) we have ourselves a fascinating, in-depth dive into a surprisingly emotionally complex road-trip.  References  The Enduring Legacy of Disney's Black Millennial Classic 'A Goofy Movie' by Austin Williams  A Goofy Movie: A Staple of Black Culture | READUS 101 by La'Ron Readus  The Little Things About A GOOFY MOVIE by ToonrificTariq (feat. The ThawedCast: Conversations About Animation

Jodi, Bridget, and Philip discuss the seminal 2007 Disney animated/live-action hybrid 'Enchanted,' from director Kevin Lima. This film would usher in the post-Rennaissance era of the Disney Princess which saw a soft revival with 'The Princess and the Frog' and truly exploded with CGI hits like 'Tangled' and 'Frozen.' Amy Adams portrays Giselle, a beautiful princess hidden away in the countryside of the kingdom of Andalasia. With a prologue lifted mostly from 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,' an evil queen desperate for power refuses to allow her stepson Prince Edward's marriage to Giselle to go through. Giselle is banished to another realm and finds herself in 2007 New York City, where she meets and befriends Patrick Dempsey's Robert and his daughter, Morgan. Entrenched in his own busy lifestyle, Robert has no time for Giselle and her fantasies but somehow can't help but be drawn to her. When Giselle is followed to New York by Edward and the Queen's henchman, a plot ensues that could spell a dire fate for Giselle and everyone around her. Enchanted is a 2007 musical fantasy romantic comedy Directed by Kevin Lima, the PERFECT person to direct this, as he is responsible for a lot of Disney's animated hits… The Goofy Movie, 101 Dalmatians, Tarzan, he was a writer for Aladdin, a character designer on the Little Mermaid, Visual Director on Beauty and the Beast; this guy knows Disney Fairytales. Enchanted begins as an animated story, we meet Giselle, your classic Disney Princess. Giselle lives in the woods with all of her favourite adorable woodland creatures, she is played by Amy Adams. Then we meet Edward, THE PRINCE, played by James Marsden. Edward is seen capturing a troll when he HEARS the beautiful singing of Giselle, he tromps through the forest and finds her, they complete each others songs and immediately fall in love, to be wed the very next day. Edwards mother in law doesn't want Edward to marry because she will no longer be queen. This is Queen Narissa played by Susan Sarandon, so SHE hatches a plan to teleport Giselle to a place where love doesn't exist. Giselle goes from being animated in a Disney fairytale to being a real life, live action human in New York City. Eventually she will also meet Robert Philip played by Patrick Dempsey and Morgan Philip his daughter and Nancy Tremaine played by Idina Menzel.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Enchanted started life as something very different to what it ended up becoming. Originally conceived as an R-rated comedy with no songs, it was purchased by Touchstone Pictures and eventually made its way to becoming a Disney property, which meant a serious tone down of the material. Going through several directors and writers, eventually it landed with Tarzan and 102 Dalmatians director Kevin Lima. He envisaged a love letter to Disney's past, taking inspiration from Shrek and Who Framed Roger Rabbit, enlisting the song writing abilities of Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz, and giving us the inimitable Amy Adams as the simply enchanting Giselle... On the podcast this week, Steven and Sean are joined by the wonderful Tara Town (of TikTok fame!) on a heartfelt trip down memory lane as we discuss the 1995 film from Kevin Lima, A Goofy Movie. Do you remember the family road trips of old? The ones that were kind of sprung on you while you were just trying to live your life? I mean, come on, parents. Who did you think we were, some sort of person who likes zipping away to remote and dusty locales without a moment's notice, all in the name of family bonding or some parental nonsense like that? We had friends we wanted to hang out with! Arcade games we wanted to spend your money on! Knees to scuff and mysterious places to discover and loiter about during the day! We were convinced that spending what we thought were the best years of our lives riding around in our old family sedan with our butthead siblings was the worst thing that ever happened to us! Suffice it to say, I completely understand what Max was going through in this film. All the kid wanted was to have a relaxing summer vacation with his best pal, P.J., and maybe get to know his crush a little better. Maybe sneak a kiss or two with her, you never know. That is, until Goofy—freaking Goofy!—comes along and throws a monkey wrench into those plans. All this turmoil and anguish just because Max happens to go to a school led by a sadistic maniac of a principal. Seriously, who threatens the electric chair when talking about a child's future? That man was unhinged and should not have been let anywhere near children. Damn it if Goofy isn't just the most endearing whatever-the-heck-a-Goofy-is, though. Show me someone who's immune to his endearing, loving, and yeah, I'll say it, just pain goofy charms and I'll show you a person with a cold, empty cavern where their heart should be. You can't help but be won over by him. Is he a little intense? Yeah, and what parent isn't? He loves his kid and that's admirable as hell. This is a blast of a film, even after all these years. If you're looking for a nostalgia trip, this one is the best place to start. Hello and welcome to the Enchanted Ears Podcast! Do we have a treat for you today! We interviewed Kevin Lima, director of A Goofy Movie, 102 Dalmatians, and Enchanted. And co-director of Tarzan. If that sounds impressive to you, wait until you hear what he had to say! This week in Disney News, Disney revealed all of the wonderful events that will be taking place throughout their 50th celebration including a new light show that's sure to be illuminating, dancing animal kites, and interactive character statues. Disney also announced their selection of Rachel Zeglar as their new Snow White for the upcoming live-action adaptation. Finally, Scarlett Johansson will be producing the new Tower of Terror movie. It was a huge honor and privilege to talk to Kevin Lima this week, who had one of the most interesting and inspiring tales we've heard to date. During our interview, Lima talks about his origins from his hard childhood to his passion for drawing to his "never say never" attitude that started at a young age. When things didn't go his way and Disney hired nobody from his graduating class, he took lemons and made lemonade, moving to Taiwan to work for a company on Brave Little Toaster. But, eventually, Disney did start hiring again, and he got to go work for the company during the very beginning of the Disney Renaissance. His confidence and positive attitude eventually landed him the gig as director of A Goofy Movie, a movie that he wasn't necessarily chomping at the bit to direct, but turned into a labor of love. Eventually, Lima switched from directing animated to live action movies. We also learned some of the difficulties of the movie business and being a director. Lima was a fantastic well of information and also motivation.  Thank you again, Kevin, and thank you for listening. If you're new to the podcast, don't forget to subscribe and leave a rating. Have a magical week! Check us out on Facebook and Youtube or submit a question/topic for us to discuss on a future episode or support us on Patreon.

Hello there! Welcome to the Enchanted Ears Podcast, where we like to share all things Disney. This week we had the pleasure of having a super special guest and talking about our latest trip to Disney. But before we dive into that, let's talk a little Disney news.   The big news this week is many of the remaining restrictions from covid are starting to be lifted from the parks. And in the most exciting news of all, fireworks are coming back!   Also, Pixar's Luca came out last Friday, and we LOVED it! We promise we won't give you any spoilers, but still give you our take on the movie.   We had a blast recording this week because our "guest" was none other than Bill (Joe's dad), who joined us on our last trip to Disney World. As he will tell you many times during our interview, he represents the AARP generation and can give you a fresh perspective on the parks. :) We discuss what we did, what we ate (and didn't eat), who we did (and didn't) see, how this trip differed from our last ones, and our favorite moments.    We'd like to give a special thanks to Bill for doing pretty darn well on his first podcast, and also for just being a great dad! We love you!   Don't forget to let us know what you think by leaving a glowing review. And tune in next week for our interview with Kevin Lima!   Have a magical week!   Check us out on Facebook and Youtube or submit a question/topic for us to discuss on a future episode or support us on Patreon.
