Voices of Search // A Search Engine Optimization (SEO) & Content Marketing Podcast
Kyle Roof, co-founder of Page Optimizer Pro, discusses the impact of AI on SEO. He emphasizes that SEO has survived previous "deaths" and AI won't change that. Despite AI's role in content generation, optimization techniques remain crucial. Roof notes that Google's algorithm hasn't significantly changed since 2015, with core factors still relevant. He criticizes Google's inconsistent treatment of large media conglomerates versus individual SEOs. Roof also highlights the importance of fairness in Google's features to maintain content quality. No matter what you are reading, watching or listening to at the moment, everyone in the marketing, media and advertising world is talking about Artificial Intelligence – AI. Is it an existential threat or a tool to make us more creative, insightful, and effective? The discussion goes on, and the fact is that in many cases, only time will tell. However, one area where AI is impacting performance right now is SEO. Google continues to be the dominant search engine in the global market, handling more than 90% of all search queries. However, the rollout of the Google AI search function has had some dramatic impacts on the user experience and the results for brands and media outlets, with some reporting a 40% increase in search traffic. Episode Highlights 10:30 - Side Effects of the Google Update 17:40 - Great time to be on online business 26:10 - Strategies to reclimb the traffic 33:10 - You can stop affiliate links and sites 44:30 - Recoverable sites Key Takeaways ➥ Kyle emphasizes the need for SEO practitioners to adapt and focus on user experience, ensuring that conversions happen on-site rather than directing users away. He suggests that surviving and thriving in SEO post-updates requires innovative thinking and a deep understanding of SEO's core goal: driving quality traffic and optimizing the user experience. Both of them agree that while Google's updates pose challenges, they also create opportunities for those willing to innovate and evolve their strategies. ➥ They stress the importance of user-generated content (UGC) and building communities around content sites, which not only align with Google's preferences but also enhance user experience and trust. By prioritizing quality over cheap content and optimizing for user engagement, they suggest that content sites can thrive despite Google's algorithm changes. ➥ Kyle Roof highlights the importance of avoiding single-source dependency in marketing strategies, highlighting the risks of relying solely on one traffic channel. He explains that diversifying across multiple platforms and channels is essential for business resilience, as traffic sources can fluctuate over time. How will Google's Search Generative Experience change the way brands appear in Google's search results? One member of the TREW Crew has been in the SGE beta for more than a year. Let's see what she's found outIn this episode, I catch up with Jennifer Dawkins, Vice President of Account Services at TREW Marketing, Jen has been part of the Beta program for Google's new Search Generative Exoereince (SGE) for more than a year and in that year, there have plenty of updates. I ask her about her experience with the SGE program program. For some background, Google's SGE is an AI-generated search summary that appears on the Google homepage, providing quick, AI-generated answers to users' queries. Jennifer shared that SGE has been valuable for finding clear factual answers and quick information, but has been less than accurate when asking, technical or complex questions. Often pulling from sources that are not traditionally high-ranking in Google search results. We also talk about how brands can optimize their content strategy for Google SGE and other AI-assisted search tools. The bottom line? Quality content and a multi-channel digital presence are the most effective strategies. The rollout of SGE to the general public is still uncertain, and we believe that traditional Google search and quality SEO standards will continue to coexist with AI-assisted search platforms like SGE.Key TakeawaysSGE provides quick answers and summaries for factual queries, but may provide inaccurate or misleading information for more complex and technical searches.A multi-channel digital presence is crucial for optimizing for AI-assisted search, as AI algorithms consider the frequency of brand mentions across various platforms.Quality content remains essential, and creating valuable, trustworthy content is key to gaining exposure and building trust with readers.Traditional Google search will likely coexist with AI-assisted search platforms like SGE, as they serve different purposes and cater to different user needs.ResourcesConnect with Jen on LinkedInConnect with Wendy on LinkedInRelated Episode: Optimizing for LLMs and Google's Search Generative Experience (SGE) with Dale BertrandRelated Episode: Updating You 2024 & 2025 SEO Strategy with Kyle Roof
Want some help understanding what content and site features Google seems to reward in today's SEO landscape? Friend of the show, Kyle Roof is back on the Niche Pursuits podcast to help us all make sense of it all. The last time he was on, he talked all about EAT (Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness) but now there is also the added E for Experience factor to account for. And the obvious elephant in the room where recent Google updates have wiped out traffic to tons of sites overnight. So Kyle brings some much needed insights into what Google prioritizes and timely recommendations for how we can adapt accordingly. Kyle stresses the importance of showcasing genuine human experience and expertise on our websites, advocating for: First-person language Author bios And validating experience through linking He also discusses how the use of user-generated content (UGC) through site blog comments can potentially be a helpful tool to demonstrate experience and trustworthiness - with a focus on curated blog comments and discussions to validate expertise. The rise of UGC platforms like Quora and Reddit are also referenced as helping you build a digital footprint of experience as well as enhancing your overall credibility and trustworthiness in your niche. And there is significant time spent on highlighting the "E" for experience in the HCU update has influenced website rankings, favoring tangible businesses and eCommerce sites that complete transactions on-site rather than acting as the standard 'doorway pages' of the standard affiliate and content sites. And with Google favoring these websites that facilitate on-site transactions, building Trust becomes a significant challenge for these affiliate sites. Another important topic discussed is building authority - not necessarily in the standard way of links - although that certainly doesn't hurt - but rather in growing the number of keywords your site ranks for. Along with this is the importance of updating content and monitoring SERP changes, with tools like Page Optimizer Pro (POP) for their watchdog feature playing particular importance. Episode quotes“For me to pay the rent next month, I needed to learn how to do SEO that day. And that's basically what I did."“When Covid happened, we...didn't really see any change in productivity or in culture or in anything else because people were already pretty much remote as it was. Once we could get back together, we just let everything go. There wasn't any point in keeping the expense because it really didn't give us anything extra.”"You need strict rules about how communication will happen. If you've received a message from someone internally, you need to respond within 12 hours. If it's a communication from a client, it needs to be responded to within 24 hours.”“The biggest thing you fear in remote work is things are going to fall through the cracks. And if you have your communication set, then that doesn't happen.”“Make sure the meetings are worthwhile meetings – that they aren't just for the sake of getting together, but they are actually doing something and that the right people are together.”“One of the biggest things you learn, especially with hiring people is that if you have a red flag at the beginning, it's not going to go away. It's not going to improve.”“If you're not seeing that effort, it's probably not going to appear. If somebody's doing something repeatedly where you say, ‘hey, this is how we do it here, we'd like you to do it this way,' and they repeatedly don't do it, they're not going to improve. And as difficult as it is, you do need to get them off the team as quickly as possible.”“I really don't like that family analogy too much. Families have a lot of dysfunction and families often don't have a goal. The point of a team is that there's a goal we're working together to do this thing and with families, that's not really their function.”“SEO is problem solving and it's really kind of connecting dots that are hard to see or connecting dots in a fog. And how I often stay sharp is I watch mysteries and I read mysteries, and it's kind a fun way of turning the brain off so you're not thinking about work, but then also constantly problem solving.” Recommended reading and listeningThe Westing Game by Ellen Raskin Connect with Kyle RoofKyleRoof.comKyle Roof on LinkedInKyle Roof on FacebookKyle Roof on Twitter/X
