No one needs to explain the spiritual aspect of cooking to Louisianans. For generations, the thoughtful preparation and service of food has been our way of loving people and building community. This week, we take a look at folks all around the world who also take a spiritual and community-based approach to food. First, we hear from author Jody Eddy, who spent two years visiting monasteries, temples, and other spiritual communities everywhere from Minnesota to Morocco, discovering the rich culinary rituals of each group. She compiled her experiences in Elysian Kitchens: Recipes Inspired by the Traditions and Tastes of the World's Sacred Spaces, a fascinating cookbook full of traditional recipes and the stories of their spiritual roots. Then, we explore one of the South's favorite backyard crops that's almost a religious icon in Louisiana – the mirliton. Planted ritually and used in religious ceremonies in Mesoamerica, mirliton has been traditionally planted on Christmas Eve and harvested in August – making regular appearances on Louisiana holiday tables. Our mirlitons drowned in Hurricane Katrina and were saved from extinction thanks to the efforts of Dr. Lance Hill. We get an update from the good doctor and learn how mirliton lovers from across the globe have connected through his website, Mirliton.org, resulting in the world's largest collection of mirliton recipes. A former MMA fighter named Dalton (Jake Gyllenhaal) with a dark past becomes the bouncer at a violent roadside bar in Florida and has to face off with some bland baddies in this poorly conceived remake of the 1989 Patrick Swayze classic. The film clocks in at 2 h and 1 m and is rated R for violence, language and some nudity. Having met up in Nice in 2022, it was interesting to ‘get up to speed' a year later. Discussing how the industry is ‘starved' of insights – with so much data from so many sources, fragmented, regional, and disconnected, that decisions cannot be reached in the timeframes necessary – Hill defines insights as the epiphany moments; what permit the right actions and determine the trajectory of a therapy.

Lance Hill, a screenplay by Hilary Henkin and directed by Rowdy Herrington, the film follows Dalton (Patrick Swayze), a "cooler" who is contracted to bring order to the raucous and unruly Double Deuce, a club/bar in Jasper, Missouri that is plagued by terrible patrons and nightly violence. This is a movie that doesn't take itself seriously and is an absolute snapshot of the 80s. The film has a run time of 1 h and 54 m and is rated R. Please note there are SPOILERS in this review. It's New Orleans: Louisiana Eats

On this week's show, we explore backyards, balconies, and rooftops where folks are cultivating their own food. We begin with Big Okra. That's the name that gardener Jack Sweeney has given to his over 15-foot okra plant towering over his New Orleans backyard. We visit Jack and the Okra Stalk on site – but what made it grow so tall? Was it the seeds that spawned this Guinness World Records-worthy plant? We hear from the man who gave him those seeds: Jack's dad Neil, a Baton Rouge attorney who keeps his own garden behind his office. Then, we speak with Tamar Haspel, author of To Boldly Grow. The new book chronicles Tamar and her husband's adventures as they adopt a more active approach to their diet – raising livestock, growing vegetables, and even hunting their own meat. Recounting tales of their successes and failures, Tamar fills the pages with practical tips and hard-won wisdom for those looking to cultivate their own food. Finally, we explore one of the South's favorite backyard crops – the mirliton – a local favorite that was on the verge of extinction at the start of the 21st century but is now making a comeback thanks largely to the efforts of Dr. Lance Hill. We hear from the good doctor before exploring the pronunciation of the iconic squash with David Hubbell. For more of all things Louisiana Eats, be sure to visit us at PoppyTooker.com.

Back before there was Garage Band, Audacity or other digital audio editing software and programs, there were music synthesizers. Chances are you have seen a movie or heard a song that utilizes a synthesizer. From rock bands like The Who and Rush, to creating the classic sounds of R2D2, synthesizers have played a major role in creating the sounds of pop culture. Our guest today is Lance Hill, curator of the Vintage Synthesizer Museum in Emeryville. This is not your average museum however. His massive collection of synthesizers are all live and able to be rented out to artists looking to add that special sound to their tracks. Today, Lance joins us over the phone to share the story of how his love music synthesizers turned from a small obsession, to a lifetime of work and accomplishment that he hopes to share with the world.   Getting Started Opening 3:00 Location 3:20 What is a Synthesizer 5:38 History of Synthesizers 7:02 Before the museum 8:27 Rock band 8:56 Collection and the museum 10:28 Visitor Experience         12:14 Sounds of synthesizers Synthesizers vs. computers 15:56 Finding the space 17:06 Who uses the studio 21:02 Workshops 25:54 Noteworthy synthesizer uses Knight Rider Drive Who soundtrack 28:55 Moving to the Bay Area 30:07 Music in Tennessee 32:33 Wrap up

Rather, prime yourself with our Death Wish 3 review and dig in to a non-Cannon Charles Bronson classic: The Evil That Men Do. Based on a not-so-good R. Lance Hill novel of the same name, Clement Molloch (Joseph Maher) is a war criminal and torture expert known as “The Doctor.” He contracts out himself to brutal dictatorships and enacts creative and gruesome ways to murder people. When he kills dissident journalist Jorge Hidalgo (Jorge Humberto Robles), ex-CIA assassin Holland (Charles Bronson) takes the case of revenge.

The Context of White Supremacy hosts the third study session on Gary Rivlin's Katrina: After The Flood. Mr. Rivlin is a White man; while employed with the New York Times he covered the historic levee failure and negligence that drowned New Orleans in August of 2005. His 2015 bestseller chronicles ten years of asymmetrical "recovery." To be explicit, ten years of black New Orleanians being displaced and deliberately impeded from reconstructing their lives. Rivlin inspects all areas of people activity: the institution of charter schools, the destruction of public housing, and outright looting of funds designated for flood victims. Last week's session re-introduced Lance Hill to C.O.W.S. listeners. Mr. Hill describes how the consensus among Whites during the days after the flood was good riddance to black people - including Mayor Ray Nagin. Rivlin continues to stress the extraordinary military presence - including Israeli mercenaries - that invaded the city. We hope this text will offer a more complete understanding of Hurricane Katrina and it's aftermath as a meticulously planned campaign of genocide against black New Orleanians. The Louisiana mirliton is disappearing. But, there is hope. In recent years, Lance Hill has become an unexpected mirliton midwife. He has assembled a fleet of farmers, backyard growers, and foragers to search for and propagate disappearing heirloom varieties of this unique vining, chayote squash. They scour farmers markets, garage roofs, storm fences and other places where fruit can still be found. I just viewed video footage of an incredible mirliton orchard in Harvey. West Bank micro-farmer Leo Jones has taken over one city block for trellising mirlitons. It supports a canopy of 300 shoots. Thanks to Lances efforts, this huge concentration of mirlitons will seed future gardens. Click here to see the video footage yourself . For the Farmers Market Minute, this is Richard McCarthy.
