Laura Dockrill was just 14 years old when she first set eyes on her husband, Maccabees guitarist Hugo White. The pair quickly began an intense relationship, exchanging carefully curated mixtapes and letters doused in Body Shop perfume. Despite a longing on both sides, the teenagers never let their friendship spill over into romance. It is this tale of young love that serves as the inspiration for Dockrill's new novel, I love you, I love you, I love you. The book follows the story of teenage sweethearts Ella and Lowe, who spend their early years friend zoning each other, before eventually losing touch. In this episode, Dockrill talks to Róisín Ingle about why she decided to fictionalise her own story and the joys of delving back into the intensity of first love. She also speaks about her experience of postpartum psychosis following the birth of her son in 2018 and how she's become a voice for this severe mental illness, which affects around 1 in 1000 mothers. Trigger Warning - Suicidal IntentionLaura Dockrill is an award-winning author and illustrator of books for children and young people. What Have I Done? Is her first book for adults which courageously narrates her experience of postpartum psychosis which she experienced after the birth of her baby boy. Postpartum psychosis occurs in 1 -2% of births. The onset is usually very sudden, most often within the first 2 weeks postpartum and often for women who have never had any previous history of mental health issues and is considered a mental health emergency. For too long there have been cool winds of silence and shame around the vast spectrum of the darker and more chaotic experiences of postnatal mental health. Laura is breaking the seal on that silence creating honesty, compassion and permission for this conversation, that so many new mothers need, to feel safe in having. Most of those affected were women, who are owed an average of nearly £9000. John Chattell's mother Rosemary was underpaid for 20 years, he joins Emma to explain how much money they eventually got back on her behalf. This is very much on message for the series, though this time we get to spend a whole episode with Laura, who was last featured a good few years ago on here. As you could imagine, a LOT of life has happened in those interviening years, but as you will hear in truly honest detail, it has been a mix of ecstatic highs and powerful lows, a rocky road upon which which she has felt every single bump. So just as a note up top, Laura goes into her experiences with pregnancy, though focused more on the later stages post-delivery. And that’s where things got tough to say the very least. This is an incredible frank conversation which goes into post partum psychosis, and all that entails - but it’s incredibly refreshing to hear such honesty and first person accounting of it all (especially from someone so nice with the wordplay and the pen), so here’s a good long chat with Laura Dockrill - give it some time and focus.LAURA LINKSTWITTERONLINEINSTAGRAMWHAT HAVE I DONE bookMore from LauraSCROOBIUS PIP on INSTAGRAMSCROOBIUS PIP on PATREONDEBRISNORTH STAR RISINGPOD BIBLESPEECH DEVELOPMENT RECORDSDISTRACTION PIECES NETWORK on FACEBOOKDISTRACTION PIECES NETWORK on INSTAGRAMDISTRACTION PIECES PODCAST ARCHIVE See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Laura Dockrill is an award winning writer and illustrator. In this episode we have an honest and frank discussion about a mental health illness that left Laura paranoid, hallucinating and not knowing who to trustIn 2018 after the birth of her son, Jet, Laura was hit, completely out of the blue, with a rare and debilitating mental illness that she says pretty much tried to kill her - Postpartum PsychosisHer baby was just two weeks when she was hospitalised as she was so ill.  Now she has recovered, she is on a crusade to smash the stigma, shame and silence surrounding one of life's best kept secrets. Some key points from our interview: How initially shame kept her quiet but she learnt to challenge her own shame around mental health issues How writing her blog really helped which eventually led to her book How she understands that talking really helped her How she discovered that she needed supporting help from others How she is now able to reassure others that recovery is possible How accepting she had no control really helped in her recovery  How she learnt that one of the most important lessons in her recovery, was to take as long as she needs to get better*                                     *                                             *                                              *"Unbroken: Healing Through Storytelling" features  individuals who have all triumphed after adversity and have not just bounced back in life, but forward and are now making a difference for others.Hosted by Madeleine Black, the show will share stories of all the amazing people Madeleine has met on her own journey as an author/speaker and these stories will heal, motivate, inspire and bring hope when they share their wisdom and knowledge with her.She really believes in the power that comes when we share our stories, that in fact we are not story tellers but story healers. She woke up on her first Mother’s Day in a psychiatric ward, without a clue where she was, separated from her newborn, with a diagnosis of postpartum psychosis. Since her experience, she’s been on a mission to uncover the psychological effects of bringing a small person into this world and smash the stigmas associated with them. Laura Dockrill is an award-winning author and illustrator. What Have I Done? is Laura's first book for adults. I have loved Laura's fiction and poems for years, and now this. I can already say it's one of the best memoirs I've ever read on mental health. It's about postpartum psychosis. It's moving, incredibly vivid and well written. Laura made me feel like I was standing in the corner of the hospital room with her when giving birth and then in her living room afterwards as she embarked on her road to recovery. The topic is so so important and it still feels so shrouded in secrecy, until now. I'm so glad this book exists. Darcy Burdock By Laura Dockrill Read by Laura Dockrill Ten-year-old Darcy Burdock is one of life's noticers. Curious, smart-as-a-whip, funny and fiercely loyal, she sees the extraordinary in the everyday and the wonder in the world around her. In this first book, we are introduced to her family: Mum, who Darcy loves as much as her favourite fried egg and chips, Dad, who is kind and fair if a bit hopeless, and little siblings Hector and Poppy, who Darcy likes dressing up in ridiculous outfits and having dance-offs with, respectively. Plus there's her non-bleating pet lamb, Lamb-Beth and best friend, Will, to have adventures with. Darcy learns that turning into an angrosaurus-rex and causing chaos just gets her in trouble, trying to run away from home with a reluctant lamb in tow leads to sore kneebows, it's best not to throw a massive strop just before your surprise birthday party, Hallowe'en is all about spider costumes and having a pumpkin with a wonky eye, and if she's ever in a situation at home or at school where she's not sure what to do, she should write a story around it and the truth will be illuminated by her imagination.
