In the second episode of season three of the Her Spirit podcast BBC Breakfast Louise Minchin and BBC Triathlon presenter Annie Emmerson talk to jockey Hollie Doyle. Hollie is a British jockey who competes in flat racing. She set a new record for winners ridden in a British season by a female jockey in 2019. The following year, she came fourth in the Flat Jockeys Championship, the highest result for a woman to date. She came third in the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award 2020, and was also named The Sunday Times sportswoman of the year.In December 2020 Hollie took third place in the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award, and was awarded three Lesters including flat jockey of the year. The 24-year-old comes from a racing background. Her father, Clonmel native Mark Doyle, is a former jockey and her mother, Caroline, rode in Arab races.Hollie grew up in Herefordshire, where the family had ponies and point-to-pointers. She was a member of the Herefordshire branch of the Pony Club and first took to the saddle aged nine. Her first ride under Rules as an amateur jockey came at Salisbury in May 2013 on a horse called The Mongoose — and it was a winning debut. After completing her GCSEs in 2013, Hollie joined the yard of David Evans in Wales. During the winter months, she spent six weeks riding out in Santa Anita, California. On becoming an apprentice jockey, Hollie moved to the Wiltshire yard of Richard Hannon in 2014 and she rode out her claim in November 2017. As an apprentice, she was victorious in the Listed Upavon Fillies’ Stakes on Billesdon Bess at Salisbury in August 2017.Hollie may be small in stature but she is as tough as they come. In June 2018, Hollie took a nasty tumble in a race at Haydock and suffered facial injuries, including several lost teeth. However, just 10 days later she returned to her day job race-riding.These podcasts have been made possible through the support of Medichecks www.medichecks.com and Sport England www.sportengland.org. Tonight's special guest is DeJay Lester from Kennewick, Washington, a child abuse survivor, activist and author of the book 'Fostering Dreams'. DeJay’s childhood started out well, in a stable and loving home environment, but at the age of 7 his mother became ill and he was abruptly sent to live with his father, a man that he barely knew. DeJay shares his many struggles, uncertainties, and disappointments his father. Following years of abuse he found his voice and spoke up about what was going on at his father’s house, and began circling around the foster care system shortly after. Feeling insecure, DeJay began to rebel against the hardships in his life. His life began to change when a caring family, the Lesters, took him into their home and showed him what a loving family was like. The hardships weren’t quite over for DeJay though. He would still have to endure being kidnapped by his father and discovering that his mother had passed away. As he began to wonder who he was or where he belonged, he found his saving grace. Football became an important factor in saving his life. His coaches, adoptive family and the supporting adults in his life saw the potential in him that no one else had seen. Together they taught him how to channel his anger and turn his aggression into being the best athlete he could be. After many years of hard work and dedication, DeJay found himself playing professional football in the Arena Football League. Through football, DeJay can now share his story to impact a younger generation who may be battling similar hardships in their life. This book reflects the importance of acceptance, abuse and struggle in the lives of youth today, giving people new perspective on important situations.

Dario, an early bloomer, found it at the age of five realizing he could add soda pop and candy to watching anime and playing videos games and reach Nirvana. Dario (alder wood, year of the tiger, Aries) likes puppies, sunsets, walks on the beach, movies that explore the emotional connections that binds we humans to another in a dance of vulnerability and courage, chicken wings-medium spicy, and Sodapop. Here's what you need to know; Pepper: Yes, please. A+W: Thank you. Weinhard's: Don't mind if I do. Coke: Okay. RC: If I must. Pibb: NO. Pepsi: Oh, look at the time. Aeron: Aeron is originally from England, lived in PA for many years before relocating to California. She likes to travel when she has time, loves to bake (though she doesn't eat it), and is an avid reader of Sci-Fi and Fantasy. She has one daughter and that is more than enough. Lester will unbedingt hinter Gittern. Doch warum will Lester unbedingt hinter Eisengittern?

It's been a month since we recorded our gloriously long World Series Championship podcast, but our livers and tear glands have recovered enough to deliver our first "hot stove" podcast of the offseason. Chad, Ben, and Eric talk about the impending Lester decision (probably made by the time you listen to this), and the Giants options to fill their holes in left field and third base. Tim Flannery retired, and Madison Bumgarner won Sports Illustrated's "Sportsman of the Year," which apparently ripped off the fresh collective scabs of millions of KC Royals fans. You can follow us on Twitter @TortureCast and like us on Facebook! All of our podcasts and video and audio San Francisco Giants player interviews can be found at TortureCast.com.
T.C. Boyle is the guest. He is the author of twenty-three books of fiction, including The Tortilla Curtain, Drop City, and World's End, for which he won the PEN/Faulkner award. His latest novel, San Miguel, is now available from Viking. Publishers Weekly raves "Boyle’s epic saga of struggle, loss, and resilience tackles Pacific pioneer history with literary verve…[he] subtly interweaves the fates of Native Americans, Irish immigrants, Spanish and Italian migrant workers, and Chinese fisherman into the Waters’ and Lesters’ lives, but the novel is primarily a history of the land itself, unchanging despite its various visitors and residents, and as beautiful, imperfect, and unrelenting as Boyle’s characters." And Terry Tempest Williams calls it "A saga of women, three women brought to the island by men…Boyle has carved out a beautiful, damp, atmospheric novel, sharp and exacting…[his] spirited novels are a reckoning with consequence laced with humor, insight, and pathos." Monologue topics: finishing the novel, extremely personal psycho-spiritual tweets, Board. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
