Thanks to GPS, ecologists today can track thousands of animals all the time with tracking devices that can be smaller than a quarter. But in 1970 there was just a weather satellite, a 23 pound collar, and an elk named Monique. Between spooky elk herds, inconsistent darts, a rowdy press gaggle, angry letters, an upside-down collar, and a couple of upsetting deaths, Monique's tracking didn't exactly go off without a hitch. Back then scientists really didn't know where animals went, and tracking them on the ground, even with radio, was arduous and provided incomplete data. So even if it wasn't perfect Monique's tracking was a huge breakthrough. Today, ecologists like the ones at Smithsonian's Movement of Life Initiative and the ICARUS project track animals from pole to pole and from the tops of mountains to deep under the sea. Insights from these trackers help with habitat conservation and breeding but might also be able to predict the next pandemic. On this episode of AirSpace, we talk to some of the scientists who use space to track animals here on Earth. Sign up here for the monthly AirSpace newsletter! AirSpace is made possible by the generous support of Olay.

2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment of the Constitution which guarantees women the right to vote. The movement to pass the 19th Amendment was led by women suffragists, considered the early pioneers of the feminist movement, who understood that abortion ends a life and harms women. These leaders include such women as Susan B. Anthony, and Alice Paul, who said abortion is the “ultimate exploitation of women.” Today, the pro-life movement is following in the footsteps of the suffragists as they advocate for equality for the unborn, believing that equal rights for women begin in the womb. Like the original feminists, the pro-life movement believes that women and society deserve better than abortion and that life is truly the empowering choice for women, babies, and society. “Courageous suffragists like Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton who fought for women’s right to vote, also opposed abortion. Pro-lifers should be inspired by the early suffragists who understood the true dignity of women, and that every person, born and unborn, deserves equal rights and protections under the law,” said Jeanne Mancini. “The success of the suffragists in achieving a guaranteed right to vote for women gives us hope that one day all persons, born and unborn, will be guaranteed the right to life,” continued Mancini. The 47th annual March for Life, the world’s largest annual human rights demonstration, will be held on January 24, 2020. Leading up to the March for Life and throughout 2020, the March for Life will share more about the theme and the incredible history of the women who pioneered the women’s rights movement and their pro-life beliefs. Awake 2 Oneness Radio with Anna-Mari Pieterse, Coordinator for Humanity’s Team South-Africa, on Friday October 20, 2017 at 7:00 PM ET. I have the wonderful pleasure and honor of working with Anna-Mari and meeting her in person this past February in Costa Rica. Born in Johannesburg in the mid-1950’s, Anna-Mari's forming years were very much touched by issues of disconnect – on a personal as well as societal level which for her played a big role in her life-long enquiry into the questions around Reality, Self and the Other; and her interest in the subjects of Psychology, Anthropology, Philosophy, Religious Studies, African World View and Meta-physics in her later years; all of this leading to the attainment of her BA degree in Counseling Psychology majoring in Religious Studies at the University of South Africa (UNISA) in 2011. Since her involvement with Humanity’s Team in 2005 Anna-Mari has served in a number of ways: Worldwide Oneness Declaration Coordinator; facilitator of the Humanity’s Team Spiritual Leadership Awards for Archbishop Desmond Tutu in 2009 and the late Mr Nelson Mandela in 2014. Co-leader of the Oneness in Twelve Spheres of Life Initiative together with Steve Farrell, World Wide Coordinating Director for Humanity’s Team. As the Coordinator for Humanity’s Team South-Africa, Anna-Mari has been playing a pioneering and driving role in the call for a National uBuntu Day for South-Africa and continues to do so until the goal is achieved. Anna-Mari has over the years also played an impactful role in taking uBuntu to the global stage as Africa’s Ancient Gift of Oneness to the world.
