They talk about her reaction to being called the GOAT, the UCLA legacy of pitchers who hit, champ camps and the Lisa Fernandez stat, defining intensity, playing fearlessly, how her parents instilled mental toughness in her, women she looked up to like Dot Richardson, Megan Faramio stories, and more. 00:00:00-00:07:59 Intro/Covering Our Bases 00:07:59-01:10:19 Interview 01:10:19-01:13:33 Foul Tip of the Week/Outro Twitter: @BleavInSoftball Instagram: @bleavinsoftball
Andrea Pomaranski grew up idolizing Lisa Fernandez and dreamed of one day pitching for the US Softball Team. On March 12th, she set a Masters American Record, scorching a 3:07:48 50K at 6:03P per mile, and won her first USATF National Championship! It was the 2nd fastest US 50K time behind the great Des Linden and 3rd fastest for any woman at any age in the world—but most importantly, it earned Andrea that coveted honor she dreamed of as a little girl, representing Team USA. Andrea's running resume is beyond impressive: 3X Olympic Marathon Trials Qualifier 2nd American Berlin 1st Masters New Haven 20K 2:31:06 Marathon PR Houston, 7th place American Masters Record Holder in the mile at 4:47 50K USATF Champion, Masters American Record of 3:07:48 What's more awe-inspiring is how this mom-of-three has endured and bounced back from the personal tragedy of losing her first two children. "10 years ago, we lost our first two children in a very heartbreaking way. For a year after our second son died, I considered it a win for the day just to get out of bed in the morning. It was far and away the darkest time period of my life, but also one that I am the most proud of because I never gave up. Even though I felt like my world had ended the day they died, I refused to believe there weren't better things ahead. And little by little, the small wins started to turn into big wins and now I find myself with 3 healthy, beautiful children, an incredible husband and friends, and I'm even able to run and set PRs at the age of 40." Andrea was told by one of the best doctors in the country that she would never run more than a few miles again due to osteoporosis... and she overcame that, too. I think she is just getting started and can't wait to follow along. For all the moms out there juggling so much for your family, I know you'll find so many good takeaways in this one. This week’s guest is 1993 winner and softball player Lisa Fernandez who credits the support and opportunity that her Cuban father and Puerto Rican mother gave her in sport from an early age. Her father encouraging her to develop her physical strength and her mother guiding her to be an independent and strong woman. Both attributes might be perceived as head of their time culturally both in terms of heritage and gender. Lisa talks about being a coach during a pandemic where they are counting on their team to independently stay fit and be ready to compete in the spring of 2021. She laments that with few role models on television at the time she had no reference of what was possible. Then a coach showed her a new game - fast pitch softball, and the rest is history. Lisa compares the three Olympic Games she competed in which have become benchmarks for women in the sport. The first time softball was included in the Olympic Games was 1996 in Atlanta but previous players deserve recognition despite being denied Olympic glory. Lisa’s second time was an ugly win in 2000 in Sydney where USA’s biggest rival, Australia, was their host. In 2004 the International Olympic Committee (IOC) changed the game in an attempt to curtail the USA domination in doing so presented a huge challenge, which was to lure Lisa out of retirement. Lisa shares what it takes to be an elite athlete, but above all credits everyone who puts themselves in a position to test themselves - be it on world stage or a local team. Now a wife and mother of two sons this Title IX baby has come along way and given so much to the world of sports, all the while staying at UCLA for her 23rd year, now as a coach. Lisa Fernandez is one of the most decorated softball players in history, and as a three-time Olympian, she has had some experience with the international tiebreaker that is being used this year by MLB in extra innings: the automatic runner at second base to start the inning. On this episode of the "30 With Murti" podcast, Fernandez discusses her heartbreaking history with this rule, which helped cost her a perfect game in the 1996 Olympics. And, the longtime assistant softball coach at UCLA also talks about the growing role of women in the coaching ranks of professional baseball. This week we have another part of the fastpitch softball coaches clinic at the PFX Tour in Dallas. This was a great softball clinic with Lisa Fernandez, and Kirk Walker. On this episode they talk about softball drills for opposite field hitting. The Fastpitch TV Show is sponsored by SoftballJunk.com Feel free to email questions for future shows to fastpitchTV@gmail.com. You may also leave questions, or comments on our call in line 209-Softbal. Visit the PFX website at www.PFXtour.com. http://SoftballJunk.com is a great resource for fastpitch softball bats. In this portion of the clinic, with Lisa Fernandez, we see a few demonstrations of drills that aid in opposite field hitting. Hitting a certain pitch cannot be practiced only at one contact point. a player must practice hitting each pitch at different contact points so that the player is ready for a pitch that could be coming faster, or that players swing is a little late. No matter what that player is ready for every situation when it comes to hitting the ball to the opposite field. This week we have another part of the fastpitch softball coaches clinic at the PFX Tour in Dallas. This was a great softball clinic with Lisa Fernandez, and Kirk Walker. On this episode they talk about speed drills for pitchers. The Fastpitch TV Show is sponsored by SoftballJunk.com Feel free to email questions for future shows to fastpitchTV@gmail.com. Visit the PFX website at www.PFXtour.com. http://SoftballJunk.com is a great resource to find the perfect fastpitch softball bat just for you! Kirk Walker and Lisa Fernandez answer questions about speed pitching. In this video you will lern that pitching speed comes from the whipping effect of a players arm, but not how fast a player can rotate her arm around. Power also comes from how hard a player pushes and leads off with their legs. A player can throw their arm around as fast a possible and the pitch be fast, but proper mechanics will give a pitcher a consistently powerful successful pitch. When has a pitcher not been put under pressure at some time in a game? Never! On this show, this portion of the clinic will give some advice on should pitchers practice in stressful situations? The answer is yes! If a pitcher is going to be placed in stressful situations in a game then she must practice being in those situations so that she is not part of completely new territory. Hitting a change up is quite tricky. every pitcher has their own unique way of pitching and reading the change up takes a lot of work. On this show Kirk Walker and Lisa Fernandez give some pointers on how to prepare for a change up pitch. Kirk suggests working on the motions of swinging, but right before moving the bat to hesitate and with that their body will physically be ready for a change up pitch.
