Last year, David Peak released "The World Below," a midwestern gothic tale intertwining two rival families whose animosity sparks amidst a ritualistic occult murder mystery, amplified by heroic doses of LSD. Published by Apocalypse Party, a rapidly acclaimed purveyor of top-tier horror, "The World Below" is a testament to their commitment to darkness. This book seamlessly blends atmosphere and narrative, achieving the rare feat of being both immersive and a page-turner. David Peak's work aligns him with horror luminaries like Brian Evenson, Clive Barker, and Poppy Z Brite. In this episode, we delve into reading as a psychedelic act, exploring how family feuds in small towns can evolve into an art form. We also dissect the drama and artistry of Jerry Springer, touch on the American mythology surrounding the West Memphis Three, and revel in the exhilaration of death metal and films like "Mandy." "A brilliant and flayed slice of Midwest gothic. While one might find traces of Poppy Z. Brite or Michael McDowell here, The World Below is wholly its own beast. Peak laces the classic premise of feuding, cursed families with high-potency LSD, forming something fresh, potent, and filled with ache." -B.R. Yeager, author of Negative Space "Violent, noir-soaked horror infuses every page of David Peak's astonishing The World Below, coiling like a serpent around love: first and lost loves, love of family and the land, love of darkness and blood. Peak mixes the most primal of emotions like an alchemist, leaving every reader transformed." -Livia Llewellyn, author of Furnace SOCIAL: Twitter: @WakeIslandPod Instagram: @wakeislandpod David's Twitter: @raviddice --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/wake-island/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/wake-island/support

This week is an orgy of horror. There are four of us. That makes it an orgy right? (I've never been to one – never got the invitation).Ahem … sorry. I'll start again. This week I am joined by not one, but THREE guests. John F. D. Taff, Livia Llewellyn, and of course, Josh Malerman. We could call them stars from the firmament of horror. Dark Stars perhaps. That would be fitting, considering that's what they are here to discuss (amongst many, many things). Dark Stars is a benchmark spook fest. An anthology of fiction that attempts to set the tone for where we are in our collective horror moment. John is the editor, Josh and Livia are contributors – amongst nine other names from the very forefront of the genre. Each story is different, with few tropes, little tradition and zero constricting theme. It's just a collection of darkness, depravity and delight.John, Livia and Josh are old friends, old battle-companions from the horror vanguard. As such I'm essentially redundant this week. I just turned the show over to them and got out of the way. I make an attempt at order and structure – we talk about making horror weird as hell, about drawing fiction from life, about how we use and abuse tropes in this new horror landscape, but mostly it's about community, friendship and weird, perverse joy in being creepy together.Oh, and Josh and I talk bad drug experiences, whilst Livia joins my fight to put sex back in horror!Enjoy!Dark Stars: New Tales of Darkest Horror is published on May 10th by Tor Nightfire in the US and Titan in the UK.Other books mentioned in this episode include:Dark Forces: New Stories of Suspense and Supernatural Horror (1980), ed. Body Shocks: Extreme Tales of Body Horror, is an anthology edited by Ellen Datlow, with over 20 stories that tackle the sub-genre "body horror" in an interesting way. Ellen Datlow is an American anthologist and editor of short fiction. Four of the contributors also join in this episode. Those four are Richard Kadrey, Llivia Llewellyn, Kaaron Warren, and Nathan Ballingrud. Richard Kadrey is an American photographer and writer. Livia Llewellyn is an American short story writer. Kaaron Warren is an Australian writer. Nathan Ballingrud is an American writer.
This is one of the best one-on-one interviews I've ever been involved in... and the credit for that goes not to me, but to Livia. WHAT a FANTASTIC episode! Seriously: You'll laugh, you'll cry, and you'll find out about Livia's childhood Kolchak obsession! I asked the eZine patreons if I could share this episode with everyone, and they overwhelmingly said yes. And hey -- if you're not a patreon, this is the kind of thing you're missing out on! What are you waiting on -- it's only $5 a month: http://bit.ly/ezine-patreon Again, patreons, thank you for allowing me to do this job, instead of working at some factory somewhere putting together widgets... :) ALL LOVECRAFT EZINE LINKS: https://linktr.ee/misanthropemike

Translator's note: these are the only extant, unburned, and legible (for the most part) pages retrieved from what was apparently the diary of one Lilianett van Hamal, an American girl who apparently lodged at the Grand Béguinage shortly before the Great Summoning of 1878 that left much of the city of Leuven in ruins. No other items from before that event have been recovered from what is now the Leuven Exclusion Zone, which as of this date remains permanently off-limits to the outside world. | Copyright 2016 by Livia Llewellyn. “What's with the lawnmower. No one mows this early in spring.” “It's June,” I reply. “Spring should be long gone.” My twin sister rolls over onto her back, rubbing the afternoon sleep from her eyes with ten long, pale fingers and two long, pale thumbs. I'm lying next to her in our nest of pillows on the living room carpet, holding a book with hands that look just like hers, pale and strange, the extra finger curving into each palm. | Copyright 2014 by Livia Llewellyn.
