Trevor Lister considers the short competition life of two cars intended to run at Indianapolis in 1950 that ended up in New Zealand six years later. In 1956 two brothers travelled to Italy intending to purchase a car to race back home. They returned with three: two Indy cars and a 1930s 6CM. The first part of this paper covers the modest race history of these cars in New Zealand. The second explores an identity policy that popped up while exploring the role of the engines in setting the Tipos and the individual identities of these cars. The policy did not set chassis numbers, nor even engine numbers. Rather it set out to describe the features of the engine as used on a particular car, for instance as applied to the 1938 8CTFs. The 8C part of the description tells us that these are 8 cylinder engines and the TF bit that these particular engines had fixed Cylinder Heads (Testa Fissa). Taken together we get an 8CTF car. But 8CTF is an engine description, not a car one, a conundrum to be explored in this presentation. This episode was narrated on behalf of Trevor Lister by Revel Arroway from You're Listening to Radio Revel Podcast. ===== (Oo---x---oO) ===== 00:00 When Fred Met Asuka: The Journey Begins 01:18 Trevor Lister's Background 02:23 Fred Zambuca's Racing Career 05:31 The 1956 New Zealand Grand Prix 09:16 The 8CTF Family and Engine Identity 16:17 Postscripts and Reflections 20:34 Closing Remarks and Credits ==================== The Motoring Podcast Network : Years of racing, wrenching and Motorsports experience brings together a top notch collection of knowledge, stories and information. #everyonehasastory #gtmbreakfix - motoringpodcast.net More Information: https://www.motoringpodcast.net/ Become a VIP at: https://www.patreon.com/gtmotorsports Online Magazine: https://www.gtmotorsports.org/ This episode is part of our HISTORY OF MOTORSPORTS SERIES and is sponsored in part by: The International Motor Racing Research Center (IMRRC), The Society of Automotive Historians (SAH), The Watkins Glen Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Argetsinger Family.

John Barth (1930-2024), who died on April 2, 2024 at the age of 93, was America's leading writer of metafictional and post-modern fiction. This interview was conducted by Richard Wolinsky and Richard A. Lupoff on November 12, 2001 in the KPFA studios, while on the book tour for the novel Coming Soon. John Barth began to receive notice for his two earliest novels, The Floating Opera and End of the Road in the late 1950s, but burst on the scene with his epic comic novel about colonial life in Maryland, The Sot-Weed Factor, and his allegory of the Cold War, set on a university campus, Giles Goat-Boy. His short story collection, Lost in the Funhouse and novella collection Chimera cemented his reputation as a writer of meta-fiction, as the stories zoom back on themselves and on the writing of those stories. From Wikipedia: “In his epistolary novel LETTERS (1979), Barth corresponds with characters from his other books. Later novels such as The Tidewater Tales (1987) and The Last Voyage of Somebody the Sailor (1991) continue in the metafictional vein, using writers as protagonists who interact with their own and other stories in elaborate ways. His 1994 Once Upon a Time: A Floating Opera casts Barth himself as the protagonist who on a sailing trip encounters characters and situations from previous works.” After the 2001 interview, he continued to work in the same vein with a triptych of novellas, Where Three Roads Meet in 2005, interrelated short stories set in a retirement community, The Development: Nine Stories in 2008, and Every Third Thought: A Novel in Five Seasons in 2011. A, book of collected stories was released in 2015 and Postscripts (or Just Desserts): Some Final Scribbling came out in 2022. This interview was both the last interview conducted with Richard Lupoff as co-host, and the final interview recorded and edited on analog tape. This program was digitized and edited in July 2024 by Richard Wolinsky. The post John Barth (1930-2024), Master of Metafiction appeared first on KPFA.

Today we have an episode of the BBC's Postscripts as it first aired on September 26, 1943. This episode features an interview with a Battle of Britain pilot and a member of the ground support staff for the flyers.
This episode will provide the background to the successful exoneration (by the passing of Resolution HJ 34 in Connecticut). You'll hear from the same 4 people that were interviewed in my series (from July 2022) and the tremendous efforts it took to get this bill passed. There were many components to this positive outcome - working w/ local representatives (including Rep. Jane Garibay), many volunteers and the power of various social media outlets. Also this team's involvement with Dr. Leo Igwe, a human right's activist from Nigeria, fighting modern day witch killings. These 4 people will also tell how this has impacted their lives. TRUMP CONFESSED LAST NIGHT A-BLOCK (1:49) SPECIAL COMMENT: His lawyers' answer to the DOJ Filing ADMITS Trump was in possession of all the documents prosecutors say were classified. It also makes NO CLAIM that Trump declassified anything. THAT'S! A! CONFESSION! (2:52) He also confessed on social media (4:51) So why hasn't he been perp walked? Finger-printed? Because the DOJ is still afraid of affecting the election! Not 2024, but the November midterms, even though Trump isn't running in them - merely because he's endorsed people who are! (7:45) The problem is, the delay in arresting Trump benefits those he's endorsed, and the "no electoral interference rule" is only in play because Trump has repeatedly stalled. (9:20) This makes the next 68 days until the midterms will be hell, because the revelations are still coming. Does "the" photo show Trump stole Iran Nuclear Deal documents? (12:17) And Trump's own lawyer Alina Habba may have inadvertently convicted him of espionage but she (13:10) dismisses espionage as a "mundane statute" which will come as a surprise to the Rosenbergs.(14:32) This is now an open and shut case. Good God, he's CONFESSED! Charge him already! I feel like I'm taking crazy pills! B-BLOCK (19:32) EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: Arnold in Downey (20:42) Postscripts to the News: Palin loses, Mastriano and Ron Johnson employ conspiracy whack jobs (24:10) IN SPORTS: Serena did it, the Marlins toss back a player named Fishman, and the 35th Anniversary of Dave Bresnahan's Great Baseball Potato Caper (29:17) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Chuck Todd says he's not fired, by tweeting a link to a Mark Twain quote Mark Twain never wrote, in a cable he never sent, about a story that never ran. Par for the course. C-BLOCK (35:30) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: Back-to-school-days means only one thing to me: the Cornell History professor who graded our papers right after he watched his beloved New York Giants - and was grading them right after the Giants pulled off the worst choke loss in their history!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
My friend of 34 years, the voice of baseball, Vin Scully, has died at the age of 94. He has often been depicted as a saint, but he was better than that: warm, funny, sometimes profane and uncertain and even almost another team's announcer. I'll tell you what I can of a man who didn't know he was a legend, and was always happy to see YOU. In news, we have the Kansas Abortion Vote, the Alex Jones "Guilty By Reason Of Insanity" trial, a "whoops" in the Arizona Fake Electors Scheme, Bill O'Reilly trying to make a TV comeback and Alan Dershowitz getting "cancelled" for the fourth time in four years. Plus, Postscripts to the News, Worst Persons in the World, Every Dog Has Its Day, other sports news, and Things I Promised Not To Tell: My TV career started 42 years ago Wednesday because...Lou Dobbs was rumored to be stepping out on his wife!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Robert Guffey, author, researcher, professor, and lecturer at California State University--Long Beach joins Greg to talk about how his early awe at underground conspiracy theory literature led him to becoming an expert in the field. In the future, there are still some problems AI can't solve. Having trained as an astronomer and subsequently managed an industrial research group, British author Vaughan Stanger now writes speculative fiction full-time. Most of his fiction is set on Earth in the relatively near future, although he has made a few excursions to the Moon and Mars. He is currently working on a novel titled A Place in Time. His fifty or so published short stories have appeared in Interzone, Daily Science Fiction, Abyss & Apex, Postscripts, and Nature Futures, among others. Several of them have appeared in translation and/or been podcast. Submission guidelines can be found at TallTaleTV.com ---- About Tall Tale TV ---- My name is Chris Herron, and I narrate audiobooks. In 2015, poor control of my diabetes left me legally blind for the better part of a year. The doctors predicted an 80% chance I would never see again, but I changed the way I was living and through sheer willpower beat the odds. During this time I couldn't read or write. Two things that I had been turning to for comfort since I was a small child. With the sheer amount of stress I was under, this was devastating. My wife took me by the arm, lead me into the local library, and read out titles of audiobooks to me. I chose the audiobook versions of books I had loved such as the Disc World series, Name of the Wind, Harry Potter, and more. They brought my favorite stories to life in ways I never thought possible and helped me through the darkest time of my life. Once my vision recovered, I maintained a love for audiobooks. I decided I would turn my focus from being a writer to becoming a narrator. I devised Tall Tale TV as a way to help out all the amazing authors in the writing communities I had come to love before my ordeal. I created Tall Tale TV to help aspiring authors by providing them with a promotional audiobook video. A way to showcase their skills with the written word. They say the strongest form of advertisement is word of mouth, so I provide a video to a platform of readers to help get people talking. Help them spread the word. Joan Didion tried and failed, she said, “to think”; that is, to write about abstractions and symbols, and make grand arguments in the manner of the New York intellectuals of her time. Instead, the California native—who died in December, at the age of eighty-seven—built her work around close observation of American life as she saw it, withholding judgment. And while many of her intellectual contemporaries belong now to a bygone era, “for my generation,” Emma Cline notes, “her influence is so massive.” Cline's best-selling novel “The Girls” is set in nineteen-sixties California, on the fringes of a cult—what we might think of as Didion country. “I almost can't think of a writer who is more of a touchstone for every writer that I know.” In fact, younger writers need to “unlearn” her voice, Hilton Als tells David Remnick, in order to find their own. Als notes that Didion eventually rejected the persona of her early works, which was imbued with white female fragility; and she was prophetic, he notes, in placing race and gender at the center of America's battles. Since Joan Didion's death, The New Yorker has published Postscripts by Als, Cline, Zadie Smith, and Nathan Heller. Some of Didion's own contributions to The New Yorker can be found here.

"“Princess Lily's Wedding” by Robert J. Santa (Originally published in Blood, Blade & Thruster.) "I love him, Daddy!" King Frederick breathed deeply. It had been a very long conversation with his youngest child, punctuated by much pouting and exasperated sighing and stomping of pretty feet. Frederick stood over her while she held her face in her hands and cried. He wanted to do nothing more than pout and sigh and stomp his feet. Of course, he couldn't, even in his daughter's bedroom with no one else to see. Kings had to uphold higher standards, especially with sixteen year-old daughters. Robert J. Santa has been writing speculative fiction for more than thirty years. His works have appeared in numerous online and print markets. Robert lives in Rhode Island, USA, with his beautiful wife and two, equally beautiful daughters, one of whom is named Lily. And while she is nothing like the Lily of this tale, she could be without stretching the imagination too much. “Shoe Man” by Tonya Liburd (Originally published in Expanded Horizons, July 2016.) Somewhere in downtown Toronto, a homeless black man had shoes whose soles were flapping. He refused to give them up, no matter what people said, no matter what people offered. They were the first things he ever bought in Canada, the shoes he wore to his wedding, so long ago. The wedding that was supposed to mark the beginning of a new life, a good life in Canada. A good life… they were pretty young, he had a wife, he had a daughter, he had a job… then the illness reared its head and took over. And everything spiraled out of control. No medications would make his mind whole again; the fear and confusion from his wife, the fights. The guilt over his daughter witnessing it all. When his wife died instantly from the car accident while he got barely a scratch – fortunately their daughter wasn’t with them – it was the last thing he could take, and he remembered just everything conspiring to force him out the door and leave everything behind. Well, almost. He still had his shoes. That was years ago. Tonya Liburd shares a birthday with Simeon Daniel and Ray Bradbury, which may tell you a little something about her; and while she has an enviable collection of vintage dust bunnies to her credit, her passions are music (someday!) and of course, words. Her poetry has been nominated for the Rhysling award, and her fiction has been long-listed in the 2015 Carter V. Cooper (Vanderbilt)/Exile Short Fiction Competition. Her story “The Ace of Knives” is in the anthology Postscripts to Darkness 6, and is used in Nisi Shawl’s workshops as an example of "code switching". She is the associate editor of Abyss & Apex magazine. You can find her blogging at spiderlilly.com or on Twitter as @somesillywowzer, and support her over at Patreon.com/TonyaLiburd. About the Narrators: Matt Dovey is very tall and very English and most likely drinking a cup of tea right now. He has a scar on his arm that he can't remember getting, but a terrible darkness floods his mind when he considers it. He now lives in a quiet market town in rural England with his wife and three children, and despite being a writer, he still hasn't found the right words to properly express the delight and joy he finds in this wonderful arrangement. His surname rhymes with "Dopey", but any other similarities to the dwarf are purely coincidental. He is the Golden Pen winner for Writers of the Future Volume 32 (2016), was shortlisted for the James White Award in 2016, and has fiction out and forthcoming all over the place; you can keep up with it at mattdovey.com, or follow along on Facebook and Twitter.
