Preorder signed copies here!Hey, neighbor! When I heard Todd Keisling — an author I knew as a writer of Appalachian horror/cosmic horror — was writing a book about a widower moving to a retirement home… I couldn't resist. There was no way this was going to be anything but awesome. And I was right, but Todd also plunged his hand into my chest and ripped my still-beating heart out. Which is to say that even though I knew what I was in for, I didn't know what was coming. I know I tend to dwell on the more emotionally significant aspects of stories, and man, this was a Venus fly trap for my sentimental mind. Grief, control, dignity, all explored in this talk of an old man who just wants to be left alone to die. From the first few pages, Todd had me feeling the grief of a man who lived a full life with his love, and lost her. A grief I didn't earn, but I felt anyway. But it's not all doldrums. In this interview, we talked about bunch about the classic film The ‘Burbs, and how it was an inspiration for the “something's not quite right” vibe in this sleepy retirement community… with a meteorite smack-dab in the middle of it. Todd describes it as a pulpy story, and I gotta agree. All in all, Todd balances the pulp, the feels, and the cosmic madness perfectly, leaving you at once very emotional, a little off, and just fully satisfied from such a great reading experience. Be sure to follow the preorder link above to get yourself a copy of this amazing book. Send us a Text Message.Todd Keisling can write the hell out of a short story. So well, in fact, that they may convince you to resist a bully, stop going to church, or tell your boss to f**k off! Cold, Black and Infinite is full of liminal tales of the between-places. Cosmic “Otherness” that defies religion or belief. Corporate soul-hells that take everything you have…and more. Weird then, that they are so fun. Todd and I talk about all of that connective tissue between his stories. Plus, we map The Southland, this “pocket cosmos” of weird Appalachia that is destined to be the stage for the next era in his career. It's a blast. And this conversation is the anti-corporate, anti-fundamentalism, anti-bully screed you've been waiting for. Enjoy. For this episode, I'm joined by Todd Keisling, author of “Devil's Creek” a book that creeps the hell out of me after just a few chapters. It's the author's eighth book and unsurprisingly, has been nominated for a Bram Stoker Award, the highest honor in the genre. Todd and I sit down to talk about the world he's created in this new book, which centers around a death cult in a rural community and those that manage to escape it. We explore the mentality of its leader, Jacob Masters and how he led a community from its normal life to their grisly end. Jack Tremly, one of those brave enough to deft Masters, is the main character of the book and we talk about his role in the years that follow. Todd has dedicated the book to Frank Michaels Errington and Matt Molgaard and he shares who these people are and the influence they had on the novel, as well as the forward written by Ronald Malfi. This book goes to some extremes and Todd talks about just how intense he'll make a book and where he draws the line.

We go back to last month's Scares That Care with the Todd Keisling and Bridgett Nelson readings. And as as special treat, Uncle Skip went under ground for a special, renegade, mixed-up private reading by John Urbancik...
Scanlines by Todd Keisling is a very dark novella from Perpetual Motion Machine Publishing. Terrifying, especially to those who have tumbled down the wrong rabbit holes online, late at night, or when you were too young. "We were ghouls in a graveyard, digging up a dead man's grave for closure. We never considered he might want to stay buried." From the back cover: "...No one has ever seen the supposed Duncan Tape, presumably because it doesn't exist. It's a ghost story perpetuated on the forums and chat rooms of the internet, another handful of bytes scattered across the Information Superhighway at blistering 56K modem speeds. For Robby and his friends, an urban legend is the last thing on their minds when a boring Friday night presents a chance to download porn. But the short clip they watch turns out to be something far more graphic and disturbing, and in the coming days, they'll learn even the most outlandish urban legends possess a shred of truth..." This week, we have a special episode for you as we had TWO guests on this week, Todd Keisling and Anthony J. Rapino. Anthony and Todd have often worked with each other on their various projects - Todd helped Anthony put out his stunning short story collection Greetings from Moon Hill and Anthony created miniature sculptures of the idol that features prominently in Todd's Devil's Creek. We covered a lot of topics in this episode, but one of the most interesting talking points was the way they each approach creating an immersive mythology in their works. Todd has recently gone on record about the shared universe that connects all of his books, but in this episode we talked extensively about the Monochrome, the terrifying realm that serves as the main setting throughout his Monochrome trilogy and home to nightmarish inhabitants. The Monochrome books are being re-released by Bloodshot Books starting with A Life Transparent. Anthony's fictional creation is Moon Hill, a town of perpetual autumn that is home to strange events and apparitions that defy logical explanation. Both of these books come highly recommended from us here at Ink Heist and no matter what sort of horror you're into, both of these reads are essential additions to your library.
This week, author Cynthia Pelayo (Children of Chicago) joins us as we revisit the Joyce Carol Oates's 1966 short story, "Where Are You Going, Where Have Been," and its connection to the Pied Piper of Tuscon serial killer and Pelayo's collection of true crime poetry, Into the Forest and All the Way Through. Our Week in Horror discussion includes James Tynion IV's comic book series The Department of Truth, Todd Keisling's A Life Transparent, Apple TV's exclusive series Servant, and the films, Saint Maud, The Vigil, and The Empty Man. This week, we bring you an exceptional holiday episode of Ink Heist. We're joined by Todd Keisling and Tracy Robinson in closing out the second season of the Ink Heist podcast. In typical Ink Heist fashion, this episode was filled with plenty of laughs and was a great way to close out 2020. It was a wide ranging conversation that covered a ton of topics and we think you'll find plenty of new artists to check out and some helpful writing tips. Just a few of the things we talked about this episode was the One of Us anthology and Frank Michaels Errington, the Monochrome series, reading bad reviews, electrocution, snowstorms, and the Ladies of Horror Fiction #LadiesFirst 21 Challenge! To close out the episode, we each picked 5 of our favorite reads from 2020. There was so many great books released this year we could've done a whole episode just on that! We had a blast recording this episode and it's always fun when all of us get together and just hang out. Also, thank you to all of our guests that have appeared on the show and for all of our listeners who have shown us an overwhelming amount of support since we started the show. We appreciate all of the kind words and shares more than we could ever put into words. Thanks for making Season 2 such a success and we have some great guests already lined up for 2021! We hope you enjoy the episode and maybe discover some new reads to ring in the New Year.

This week, we took a break from our regularly scheduled programming and decided to crack open a few drinks and hang out with friend of the podcast Todd Keisling. It was a pretty informal conversation, but we do have an exciting announcement from Todd about one of his books during this episode you won't want to miss. Some of the things we touched on this week were Weird Fiction, the challenges of writing during the quarantine, Silver Shamrock Publishing, Poltergeist Press, a shoutout to the "Does the Dog Die in This?" podcast, Sci-fi & Scary's Twisted Anatomy Open Call, a special announcement from Todd, and more. Check out our conversation now right here on Ink Heist or on your favorite streaming service.

This week, we started the show with the intention of running a solo show, but we decided to cold call Todd Keisling while he was signing copies of his upcoming Dim Shores release, Scanlines, which led to one of our funniest episodes yet. By the end of the episode, we all had tears in our eyes from laughing so hard. We kicked off the show by talking about Ian Pisarcik's stunning debut novel, Before Familiar Woods, which hits shelves today. If you haven't already pre-ordered a copy, definitely go out and pick it up. It's a richly detailed, atmospheric noir novel with some of the most realistic characters we have read in recent years. Don't be surprised to see it pop up on a lot of "Best of" lists at the end of the year. Then we called up friend of the show Todd Keisling and had a blast hanging out with him for a few hours. We talked about Faces of Death, his hometown, Hellier and other paranormal stuff, Noir at the Bar and a whole lot more. Check out our conversation with Todd now right here on Ink Heist or on your favorite streaming service.

EPISODE 104: HOLIDAY HORROR & NOIR What Are You Afraid Of? Horror & Paranormal Show with horror authorsT. Fox Dunham and Phil Thomas. The mid-winter season has a tradition of scary stories and legends, and we’re back to share them! Fox isn’t dead! And he’s not a zombie, we swear. After a forced break while Fox dealt with pneumonia, What Are You Afraid Of? Horror & Paranormal Show returns with a holiday-themed episode, featuring ghost stories, silly tunes and noir fiction. Horror authors T. Fox Dunham & Phil Thomas catch up then discuss the dark legends and customs that evolved in Europe during the mid-winter holidays—and these are some horrible and twisted Christmas stories told to children. Don’t be naughty or else! Cannibals. Giant cats. And trolls just to name a few Yule ghouls. Fox narrates a true ghost story about the classic haunting of an old apartment building. Horror author Todd Keisling, author of The Smile Factory, shares his paranormal experiences at 146 West High Street. We play two silly holiday songs from British musician Simon Panrucker—composer for several cartoons and one of the hosts of The Past Present Future Funcast. We play his holiday carol, Leave My Nuts Alone! The show closes with a holiday noir story written by celebrated crime and horror author, Andy Rausch. Santa’s Little Helper is a sardonic tale about a burglar and a little boy who thinks he’s Santa, narrated by our amazing David Walton. Yeah. We’re terrible people! But as we learned, the mid-winter holidays have always been a time of ghost stories and dark tales, and we invite you to celebrate the creepy side of Yule with us. Or the Krampus will stick you in a sack and beat you with a stick. Oh . . . and leave his nuts alone!
