The marsh rabbit is a medium-sized rabbit with short, rounded ears, and small feet. It is similar in appearance to the more familiar eastern cottontail rabbit but without the white color of their tail. The marsh rabbit is found in the southeastern United States from southeast Virginia (in the Dismal Swamp), along the east coast to eastern Alabama, and the Florida peninsula and the islands along the coast of Florida. There is a subspecies of the marsh rabbit, which is endangered and only found in (endemic to) the lower Florida Keys. Marsh rabbits live near freshwater and brackish marshes and wet prairies and can even be found in flooded agricultural fields. The main threat to marsh rabbits is habitat loss from human development and fragmentation. Their population also declines due to hurricanes and coastal flooding. This is especially true for the Lower Keys Marsh Rabbit. The Lower Keys Marsh Rabbit population has been declining since at least the 1960s because of the loss and degradation of suitable habitats because of human development. The Lower Keys Marsh Rabbit was once common throughout the Lower Florida Keys (the Lower Florida Keys begins at Big Pine Key and ends at the island of Key West) but is now only found on 13 islands. Sea level rise has been projected to seriously threaten the population and its ability to survive on these islands. The threat of sea level rise has grown because these coastal ecosystems cannot migrate inland due to human development and infrastructure, often called coastal squeeze. On The South Florida Roundup, we examine a disturbing maritime mystery: sawfish deaths in the waters off the Lower Keys, and bizarre behavior from other fish species (01:02). We also talked to a Haitian-American leader in South Florida who, like most Haitian expats, is urging President Biden to change course in Haiti before it's too late (18:37). And we heard from Cuban exile and Hialeah son Edel Rodriguez about his new graphic memoir, Worm (35:05).

In the Florida Keys, fishermen have the chance, every day, to catch a prize trophy fish. Islamorada, in fact, is known as the ‘Sportfishing Capital of the World.' But that fish you catch can still swim on to live and fight another day. How? Through the work of Keys conservationists, forward-thinking fishermen and even artists. Join host Elizabeth Harryman Lasley to learn about catch-and-release sportfishing from two renowned charter captains, Matt Bellinger of Bamboo Charters in the Upper Keys, and Will Benson of World Angling in the Lower Keys. Learn why Florida Keys sportfishing -- part of the Keys' lifestyle and heritage -- is legendary. An outlaw motorcycle gang in the Keys? Really? Yes, sheriff's deputies have arrested three members of the Pagan's Motorcycle Club in the Lower Keys in the past two weeks. (The erroneous apostrophe in Pagan's is theirs, not ours.) All three suspects had guns. All three had drugs — two to 12 grams of cocaine each and four grams of a crystal-like white powder that the suspect said was Molly. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/motorcyclemadhouse/message
As I stated in the intro to this podcast, Carl Ball has been a true brother for many years. I first got connected with Carl from a fellow guide, John Glorieux, as I was looking for a camera boat operator for my fishing TV show at the time, “Sportsman's Journal.” Carl and I instantly hit it off, and he was the first to show me how exhilarating tarpon fishing with mullet can be. We would light up a cigar, catch bait in back finger canals, and troll under the metropolitan bridges for the massive silver demons lurking below. The bites were like underwater fireworks that gave me a direct adrenaline rush down my spine. For the next number of years, our friendship tightened and we began poling each other around in the Everglades and the Lower Keys. Carl Ball was born and raised in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. His passion for fishing came from his grandfather, who was an offshore charter boat captain based out of the Boca Raton/ Fort Lauderdale area in the 1950's. At the tender age of ten, Carl had an aluminum Jon Boat with a four horse power motor and would explore the canals and waterways in his backyard. He and his buddies would transport their boats on land via shopping carts. As his fishing prowess inevitably grew, he started mating on offshore boats and eventually got his captains license. For the last twenty years, Carl has been one of the top guides in Fort Lauderdale and Biscayne Bay. I don't know of anyone who loves to fish more than this guy. Raining, blowing 30mph, cold as Nantucket - Carl is fishing. He lives, sleeps, and breaths fishing. He doesn't care if it's a redfish, black tip shark, or permit, his desire just to be out on the water inspires me. He is the epitome of the phrase, “you don't know unless you go!” We hope you enjoy his story!
In this episode, Mark Baratto sits down with Billy Kearins of Coast Projects. This is our second time sitting down for an interview, the first was about his iconic local brand found HERE. In this interview, we talk about Billy's music and arts festival know as the COAST is Clear, happening on December 4th. We talk about how he came up with the idea and how he is keeping Key West a boutique music town with big acts, without arena size seating. ATTENTION!! How would you like to win 2 FREE tickets to this years festival! We are running a contest on our social media channels. All you need to do to enter is go to my Facebook or Instagram account and like the COAST IS CLEAR post (it will be the one with the snippet of this interviewing playing) and TAG 3 people in the comments Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/backyardsofkeywest/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/backyardsofkeywest Tag 3 people in the comment section We will pick a winner on Friday October 29th. More on the COAST is Clear Music & Arts Festival In a time of global unrest and uncertainty, it's often best to take a step back to find respite in the simple pleasures of life. A weekend in the sun surrounded by close compadres — or simply folks you've only just met because of a shared love of music and art — can, at the very least, provide a temporary feeling that things might just be okay when whatever it is that we've all collectively endured is finally behind us. And, at its core, that's what COAST Is Clear is really all about. From the start, it has been a time and place to celebrate the end of a difficult stretch — for us, it's that six-month period we in the tropics call Hurricane Season, that officially ends each year on December 1 — when, quite literally, the “coast is clear”. We started this festival in 2017, just months after Hurricane Irma ravaged the Lower Keys. That year, a few musician friends of ours agreed to come down to lend a hand and lift spirits by doing what they do best. And since then, we've committed to bringing down top-notch, nationally-acclaimed bands, paired with local art to make COAST Is Clear an annual festival — one that has been enjoyed equally by our local friends and traveling fans alike. This year, for the first time, we are so excited to announce that the festival will be a collaborative effort between one of Key West's most beloved and enduring arts organizations, Key West Art & Historical Society (KWAHS) and the renegade creative forces at Coast Projects (COAST) — a pairing that offers both a timeless legacy and a raw and relevant edge with regards to the arts on the island. So join us on the first weekend of December to dance and sing in the sun, to enjoy the fresh salt air and island breeze, and to celebrate the end of the old and the beginning of something new... Justin Rea has had a remarkable life on the water. His mother, Beryl, was a fishing guide in Bishop, California when she handed her three year old son a fly rod. Little did she know that gift would pay huge dividends over the next 48 years. At age 31, Justin moved to the Keys and started to chase bigger and faster animals than what swam in the local creeks and small rivers of Bishop. Justin would become one of the best guides in the Lower Keys. His proving grounds were the high profile flats where massive tarpon and permit swim. His high praise were wins in the most coveted permit tournament in the world, “The Del Brown!” Having won it four times and finishing second three times, you wouldn't be wrong calling him one of the best in the world at his craft. His efforts and vision were bigger than the trophies on his wall. His heart would lead him to a platform of conservation. He was influential in conjunction with the Lower Keys Guides Association in successfully removing barracuda from the cross hairs of the local commercial fishing fleet. He and his wife, Lauren, were visionaries in starting the catch and release Cuda Bowl, where today it's a highly praised tournament to win. And more recently in 2019, he and his son Ryan won the prestigious Key West Slam Tournament. We have fished with Justin over the years and have experienced some of our greatest moments on the water with him. His diving, spear fishing, and kite boarding bring his spectrum with the ocean full circle. This man is not one demential. It doesn't matter what the species or activity is, he is full throttle into everything he does. Justin may seem laid back and very mellow to many people but on the inside he is full of vigor and passionate about his beliefs. We are honored to call Justin a great friend and so glad he came on the podcast. Thanks buddy!
One of the most incredible fly fishing destinations and species, "The Silver King" the Giant Tarpon from the lower keys!!! Denis and Jarvis from Monic Fly lines discuss their amazing trip to the Bahia Honda Sporting Club on Cudjoe Key. The Highs and Lows that surround this type of fishing and how the tarpon on the flats are emotionally similar to bugling in a big bull elk. Denis tells the story of the fish that were landed and in this game even more so than most The ONE That got away!

Every once in a while, amidst your life travels or daily routine, you will meet someone special. Someone who embodies integrity, passion, loyalty, and work ethic. They not only make you feel good when you are in their presence, but they make you a better person. Doug Kilpatrick is one of these people. He has been a brother ever since I met him and I deeply cherish our friendship. Ever since Doug was a little kid, he has been enamored with the water and the scaly creatures below. Doug worked on charter boats all throughout high school and college, and in 1994 received his captains license. He later moved down south to chase his dreams of becoming a flats fishing guide in the Florida Keys. Capt. Tim Carlile and Capt. Steve Huff would quickly become Doug’s idols who he'd look up to and try to emulate. Kilpatrick has become a role model for many of the younger guides. Throughout his career, he has accumulated over 45 world records and won many prestigious tournaments including: The Del Brown Permit Tournament, two March Merkin Permit Tournaments, The Key West Super Fly Tournament, and the 2004 Golden Fly Tarpon Tournament with myself as the angler. His accomplishments speak for themself. Today, Doug speaks about the early years in the Lower Keys, close calls with bear attacks, and the conservation efforts being put in place to protect the flats species. I hope you enjoy this podcast as much as Nicky and I did.

Does the winter weather have you down? It is time to start thinking about spring break and summer vacations. This week we are talking about another warm-weather destination, the Florida Keys. If they aren’t out climbing mountains, hiking to a waterfall or playing at the beach they are most likely at the local donut shop trying to find the best donuts in North America! They write about things to do with kids at the destinations they visit, full time family travel and working from the road at www.crazyfamilyadventure.com. Follow Bryanna on Facebook, Instagram, Youtubeand Twitter. TIPS FOR VISITING THE FLORIDA KEYS WITH KIDS There is more to the Keys than just Key West. The Keys are made up of five destinations; Key West, the Lower Keys, Marathon, Islamorada and Key Largo. If you really want to get the most out of the Keys you should think about maybe doing a road trip, where you can hit all of the Keys rather staying and experiencing only one of them. Be aware that the Keys are not about the beaches. The Keys are surrounded by a coral reef, which messes with the white sand beaches that come to mind when thinking of Florida. This means there are a lot of great snorkeling spots that you can do right off of the beach. Since the Keys are so long, you shouldn’t try to stay in one of the Keys and drive to explore the rest since you will be spending a lot of time in the car. It is also not a great drive at night since the roads are mostly two lane. Hawks Cay Resortis a great resort to stay for families located in Duck Key. You could definitely visit the Keys in a week, but if you can spend ten to fourteen days, that would be the best. If you are able to spend at least ten days for your trip you will really get to explore each of the Keys at a more relaxed pace. You can still have some really great weather if you visit the Keys in the Winter or Fall but be prepared, it could always turn rainy and overcast. Must do activities in the Florida Keys could include: John Pennenkamp Coral Reef State Parkis a great place to visit. They offer glass bottom boat tours, kayaking, and much more. This state park is located up in the northern Keys. If you are going into Marathon, Florida, you should think about checking out the Turtle Hospital where you can see all of the turtles that they are rehabilitating. They also have a surgery area, that if they happen to be conducting a surgery there is a window where you can see and learn what they are doing. There are also locations in the middle Keys area were you can rent a pontoon, or even just go kayaking. When you get to Key West, the best activity you should think about doing is a tour through Fury Adventures. They will take you out on a big boat for six hours and do activities like snorkeling, jet skiing, parasailing and more. This is a great way to get out on the water! If you want to spend some time off of the water the Key West Aquarium is a great spot to do that. This is a small aquarium but has a lot to offer like signing up to feed the shark! If you are really interested in this, make sure to ask the front desk as soon as you get there to see if they are doing it that day and get your kids or yourself on the list. The Shipwreck Treasure Museumis a really cool place to visit. They have a lot of different artifacts from shipwrecks that happened in Key West and their basement is actually below sea level. There is also the Florida Keys Eco - Discovery Centerthat is free to go to and it is a great place to go to learn more about the reefs, area and the ecosystem! If you like to see the sunset you should check out the Sunset Festival on Mallory Square Dock. You can definitely bring your kids but be prepared for loud people and some crowds. If you are interested in exploring a little bit out of the Keys you should think about visiting Dry Tortugaswhich is an island that has an old fort on it. You have to take a ferry to get there and the trip takes about two hours, but it is so beautiful! If you are really feeling adventurous you can actually camp out on the island. You will need to bring all of your supplies with you but it would be a great experience. If you are thinking of camping in the Keys you should check out the State Parks for their campgrounds but for some of these you will need to book at least eleven months in advance. In Key West there is a place called Island Dogs Barand Lagerheads Beach Barare both great places to eat the beach bar you can literally eat your food with your toes in the sand! Then by the seven mile bridge in Marathon there is a place called the Sunset Grillewhich has a pool in the restaurant and you can sit and relax with your food or even a cocktail while your kids enjoy swimming. You will find a lot of supplies you will need while you are there. For example snorkeling gear, if the place does not provide it there is always places you can rent the gear you will need. Since the weather can be unpredictable be sure to pack layers! BEST PLACE TO TAKE FAMILY PHOTO Bryanna suggests that you take your family photo at the southernmost point of Florida, but be sure to go early in the morning or you could be waiting in line for a couple hours to get your picture taken. If that doesn’t matter to you, taking a family photo on any beach with the ocean behind you will be a great photo! FAVORITE TRAVEL GEAR Bryanna loves to wear her Adidas sandalsbecause they are so comfortable and easy to slide on and off. When she is not wearing those she like her plain black flip flops that you can dress up if you want too. This post contains affiliate links. And the weather forecast for the Key West and the Lower Keys area on this Saturday, December 22nd. Highs today of 72 degrees. Lows tonight of 62 degrees. After having a couple of very windy days, we are going to see the winds drop off dramatically after midnight during the day. Today we have only a 10% chance of rain. Winds coming in from the north around eight miles an hour and our humidity has dropped off to 59%. We still have another day or two of very, very high seas from the residual leftovers of the cold front that came through. Atmospheric pressure today is on the rise, going from 30.03 to 30.19. Although we will have winds averaging eight miles an hour, will have gusts much higher than that they can get up to about 20 miles an hour today. Our UV index for today is six, so it's high. It'll be partly sunny, though, so please take precautions. Also our water temperature holding steady at 75 degrees. Swells today around midnight, they're starting off very high from the residual effects of this storms and the winds that have come through - around 14 feet overnight and then dropping off during the day down to about six to seven feet. Still six to seven feet swells off shore are significant. So we have another day of probably a small craft advisory and a little bit of leftover residual from our days of gale warnings. Sunrise today is 7:06am and sunset will be at 5:45pm. If we look at our tide charts, the first low tide is at 3:11am and the next low tide is it to 2:29pm. The first high tide is it 10am. And the next high tide is at 9:10pm. Overall, 10 hours and 37 minutes of sun and the solar transit is at 12:26pm. We just passed the shortest day of the year, so gradually our days will be lengthening. Our tidal coefficient today is a 97. So again, very high. We have tides today that start out about a half a foot below sea level and get all the way up to 2.2 feet at the highest high tide. So definitely a 97 for the tidal coefficient completely makes sense. If we have to look at our fishing activity due to the full moon. We've got a three fish day for fishing activity, but you got to be careful about those winds. I just can't say that enough - don't take too many risks! Our very high activity periods are all of our major and all of our minor periods today are all three fish activity. So whenever sunrise and moo set are also intersecting that's happening between 12:24pm and 2:24pm, and then also very high activity from 5:58 to 6:58pm tonight. So we do have a lot of fish activity that should be happening because of the tides and the full moon coming on. But again, we do have a lot of wind if you're looking to go off shore. The Gulf Stream has moved in slightly a little closer to shore, but winds are still gusting starting early in the day. They're up close to 30 knots out there in the Gulf Stream. And then they will eventually die down to about 15 to 20 knots later on in the day. But it's definitely not smooth sailing out in the Gulf Stream yet it must be some changes closer to Christmas day, but for today not the best day to be out there. Overall though, if you are looking to have an incredibly beautiful temperate weather day when the rest of the country may be dealing with flooding, blizzards, rain cold, yucky you know what you've woken up on the islands. It's almost time for Christmas and it is nothing but the perfect day to have a perfect day. This weather report is brought to you by 43 Keys Media. You want to know more about what's going on in our beautiful Florida Keys, visit http://43keys.com. You can also get this program as well as others as an Alexa flash briefing. Just tell Alexa to play "the Florida Keys Weather and Fishing Report" as your flash briefing.
Today's weather forecast for Thursday, December the 20th. We have some unusual weather coming through very, very severe winds and also rain and storms on the way. So for the Lower Keys and the Key West area today, partly cloudy and very, very windy. There's a slight chance of thunder showers in the morning. But then as we move through the later afternoon and this cold front comes in, we will be having some severe thunderstorms with damaging winds. Heavy rainfall also a chance of flooding in some areas, so it is really going to deteriorate in the afternoon hours. High's today are still warm in the mid 80's south southeast winds 20 to 25 miles an hour - definitely pay attention to that. Our chance of rain today is 80%. Let me just go ahead and say today is not the day to get out on the water. If you're doing any fishing at all today, it needs to be from solid ground because it is going to be so windy that you're going to have a very hard time. Our visibility is 15 miles today and our barometric pressure is falling going from 29.94 to 29.83. Our UV index coming in at a six on the scale. So that's high for our UV index. And so with the wind, you could actually end up getting sunburned a lot quicker than you could normally without this extra wind. Today, our current water temperature in the Lower Keys is holding steady at 75. Again, that might change once we get some of this cooler weather in with this cold front. As far as the swells offshore again, just rule it out, it's not worth it. There is a small craft advisory. It's not worth being out on the water to try to catch some fish today. You should be prepared for average wave height of about 8.6 feet. But getting as high as 14 feet, which you know is well as I do that is seriously rolling ocean. So you do not want to be out in the open sea today with all of this wind and the cold front coming through. Our sunrise today is 7:04am and sunset is at 5:44pm. The first low tide is at 1:46am and the next low tide will be at 1:03pm. The first high tide is at 8:36am and the next high tide will be at 7:41pm. Today, we have 10 hours and 37 minutes of sunshine. And our solar transit is now 12:25pm. Our tidal coefficient today - it is high and so it's going to be an 87 throughout the afternoon overall. Today for solunar activity, it's a one fish day completely overall. We have major and minor periods. Major periods are from 10:26am to 12:26pm and 10:57pm to 1257. And those are two fish periods. But again, let me say the Gulf Stream is going to be rolling today. It's going to be a terrible day to be out on the water. So if you're fishing, make sure it's from a bridge or secure structure on land. Minor periods of activity for and 4:09pm to 5:09pm. So we're still in the waxing gibbous phase of the moon. We've got the winter solstice happening tomorrow and then our full moon on the 22nd. So it's got some changes going on. So be aware of that. And this weather coming in is also something to definitely take serious. You might want to throughout the day. just double check and make sure that you're not missing any warnings from NOAA or the National Weather Service. So definitely pay attention. You know, the beautiful thing is even when we have severe weather like this coming through, it's still a gorgeous day. It's just windy, but it's very temperate. It's very moderate climate and you are in the perfect place and today is the perfect day to have a perfect day. This weather report is brought to you by 43 Keys Media. If you want to know more about what's going on in the beautiful Florida Keys, visit http://43keys.com. You can get this and other shows as an Alexa flash briefing. You made it to Hump Day. And we're now into the 12 Days of Christmas. Today is Wednesday, December the 12th. And the beautiful weather forecast for the Key West, and the Lower Keys area. High today, 74 degrees a low overnight of 70. It'll be partly cloudy today a little bit warmer than yesterday, but still really temperate. So it's a very, very nice day on tap for us. We do have a 20% chance of rain. Winds are from the northeast at 12 miles an hour and our humidity is 68%. We have falling atmospheric pressure today, going from 30.24 to 30.12. We do have a slight chance of those showers in the afternoon. So be prepared for that if you're out and about in the afternoon. Just some isolated showers popping up. Nothing to really worry about. Our UV index today is a 5 so dress appropriately. Our water temperature has warmed up just a degree. So it's up to 76 degrees - probably drop off again, after a couple days of this cold spell. Sunrise today - 7:02am, and the sunset today will be at 5:38pm. Our first high tide of the day will be at midnight. And the next high tide is at 1:36pm. The first low tide will be at 7:04am. And the next low tide will be at 6pm. Overall, we have a total of 10 hours, 38 minutes of sunshine today. Solar transit today will be at 12:18pm. Our tidal coefficient today is coming in at a 53 which is very, very average. So nothing wrong with being average when it comes to that. If we're looking for our solunar activity, not a terribly effective day for fishing. So we're still in that waxing crescent of the moon. So major periods today, you're only going to have one fish activity, which is really low, but the second major period does coincide with sunset. So it may be a little bit better from 4:45pm to 6:45pm, minor periods, 11:06am to 12:06pm, and 10:25pm to 11:25pm. So overall, if we have to give a ranking on the fish scale, it's a Zero! So maybe not the best day to go fishing. Although you never know. If you're lobstering or you're doing other things you might have a different type of results. So for looking at the jet stream, the jet stream is still very close to shore. It's going to be moving a little bit over the next few days. But it's still only one to two seas out in the Gulf Stream. So even though things might be a little bit higher, just offshore, you might be okay once you get out in the Gulf Stream. So just pay attention to that. Make sure you're double checking all your conditions, especially when you've got these higher winds, and you're in a small craft. So we don't have any small craft advisories at the moment for that, but it is pretty choppy out there. So and don't forget just a few more days and we'll be talking about wahoo fishing and that comes right before the full moon - five days before and five days after. And do be aware that as these waters get cooler, we're going to have a lot of bait fish coming into the warmer shallower water so that means other fish that are after those baitfish will be coming along with them. So you might get lucky out there with some really cool fish that you can catch not terribly far offshore. Either way, it's Wednesday, it's Hump Day we're into the 12 Days of Christmas. I hope you're feeling the Christmas spirit. And I know you're seeing it around town with the lights and the parades and all kinds of wonderful things going on. It's a perfect place to live and all in all, it's the perfect day to have a perfect day. This weather report is brought to you by 43 Keys Media. Good Saturday to you! Today is Saturday, December 8, 2018 and our weather forecast for today - we have a little bit of a mixed bag. We have partly cloudy skies today a high temperature of 82 degrees a low of 75. We do have a 20% chance of rain. And I'll talk a little more specifically about when we're going to see that it's mainly going to be in the afternoon. Winds will get up to about 14 miles an hour. Our humidity is 71%. So it's Saturday, you may be looking to get out on the water. And if you do, I would remind you that - I noticed it last weekend, we had a lot of manatees coming in our canal and they are making their way into the shallower water. So if you are out boating, keep an eye out. You don't even know they're below the surface. And you don't want to be the one that ends up doing a damage to the manatees. After we've already seen. I think the numbers are over 700 that have died from different boat strikes, and then also from the red tide. So it's just been a devastating year for our manatees. So keep that in mind. Keep an eye out for them if you're out this weekend. Now we have atmospheric pressure on the rise. It starts out at 30.03 and rises to 30.15. Afternoon thunder showers - after about noon, you're going to see 77 to 80% chance of thunderstorms. You're also see the winds pick up a little bit as those storms roll through. You can also end up having some pockets of sunshine where you can actually get out and enjoy the water and the weather. Our UV index today is a high six, so do take protection. If you're out make sure you're wearing sunscreen. They recommend 30 SPF or higher. Our water temperature has done exactly what I thought it would do. It dropped off another degree we're down to 76 degree water temperature for the Lower Keys surrounding area. As you get out a little deeper, it might be a little bit different. But that's what we're looking at. Our sunrise this morning is at 7am sunset will be at 5:39pm. When we look at our tides today, we've got low tide the first one coming in at 4:16am the next low tide at 3:33pm. And then our high tides will be at 10:55am and 10:04pm. Our tidal coefficient today is 78 which is high but it's a little bit lower than it has been in the last few days. And if you're looking at sounar activity to determine when and where you should fish. Now remember we are now in the waxing crescent of the moon. So our major periods of fishing activity today very high fishing activity from and this is talking about three fish activity very high from one of 7am to 3:07am and the opposing lunar transit. And then during the lunar transit from 1:31pm to 3:31pm, I'm going to try to take advantage of that window of opportunity. But even our minor periods are still three fish activity. So that's very high 8:02am-9:02am is the first period and then the 7:01pm to 8pm is the second period. So I'll be testing this lunar theory myself tomorrow so wish me luck. Do be prepared it is going to be winds ranging from 10 to 20 miles an hour. You might see some gusts and some higher winds around where the storms are. But again, you should be able to dodge a good many of them if you're out and just keeping your eyes open. So it doesn't matter what we have weather wise here it's nothing compared to the one or two feet of snow that a lot of the South is going to be covered in with the blizzard that's coming across the country. So be thankful you're not there. We just have normal beautiful December weather with lots of bait fish coming in closer to the reef and that means lots of other predator fish following them to get the bait fish. So all in all it's a perfect day to have a perfect day. This weather report is brought to you by 43 Keys Media. Hey Weight Loss Nation! Today, I have another restaurant review from my visit to the Florida Keys. If you LIVE in the Florida Keys or you are on Vacation in the Florida Keys, I have a great restaurant for you to visit. I visited the FL Keys Steak & Lobster House, which is located at 3660 Overseas Hwy, Marathon, FL 33050 Here's the link to their website www.FlKeysSteakAndLobster.com The Florida Keys are a string of tropical islands……and they stretch about 120 miles off the southern tip of Florida, between the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico. There are literally over a THOUSAND islands in the Keys. This was my 1st visit to the Keys, so…… I am NOT an authority by any means, on the Florida Keys! What I am good at……is finding you Restaurants with Healthy Options during YOUR trip to the Keys! Thankfully…….The “Keys” are divided up into 3 Major Sections: The “Upper Keys” The “Middle Keys”……. And …….The “Lower Keys” To give you a perspective……..Key Largo is located in the “Upper Keys,” which is the Northern part of The Keys, and is located South of Miami. Key West is located in the “Lower Keys”…….the Southern most part of the Keys. Today, I am going to tell you about a fantastic restaurant on the island of “Marathon,” which is located in the “middle keys.” I mentioned to you last week…..that I was visiting My Friends……. Christy Haussler & Allison Millwood, owners of “Team Podcast.” Team Podcast offers “Full Service podcast production, which includes…..podcast editing , show notes, and social media marketing distribution. If you need help with podcast production…..don’t hesitate to contact Team Podcast at www.teampodcast.com Christy & Allison know I’m LIVING a Healthy Lifestyle, so they took me to….. the “FL Keys Steak & Lobster House,” which is located at 3660 Overseas Hwy, Marathon, FL 33050. Again……Marathon is located in the “Middle Keys” The atmosphere inside the restaurant is cozy & clean, with fresh, white linen tablecloths & scenes of stained glass fish on the walls. I love that the tables are not squished up against each other too! I had plenty of room to eat and I was able to have a conversation with my guests…..without SCREAMING! I HATE sitting at a table in a restaurant & I can’t even have a conversation with my guests without screaming at the top of my lungs! Nice atmosphere at FL Keys Steak & Lobster House! Our WAITER was named Jason, and Jason was an excellent waiter. The kind of waiter, when you tell him ONCE what you are drinking and he comes back with another glass at exactly the right time! Jason was also great at recommending items from the menu based on my “LIVING a Healthy Lifestyle” criteria. Thank you Jason for obviously liking your job and taking care of me and my guests that night! Now…..let’s take a look at the menu MENU They have a full-line list of adult beverages with beer, wine and specialty drinks. I found the Gluten-Free "Redbridge Beer" interesting, and they have non-alcoholic O’Douls Beer as well. They serve unsweetened ice tea as well as bottled & sparkling water. The appetizers are abundant and tempting. You have to ALWAYS remember you are eating healthy, which means eating REAL Food……the Weight Loss Nation motto is…. “If it grows out of the ground, hangs from a tree, roams the Earth, flies in the sky or swims in the ocean…..EAT it™” Don’t think hard about this and definitely don’t try and manipulate what the motto means. The motto does NOT mean eating Fried Food. Shrimp that has a bread batter and then deep fried in vegetable oil….is NOT…..Healthy Eating or Eating Real Food. Healthy Eating an option from the menu like this …….Chunks of fresh lobster marinated with lemon juice, oranges, cilantro, onions and cucumber…..This Healthy Eating option is called Lobster Ceviche. For $15.95, you get FRESH and I mean FRESH.... Lobster with healthy fruits and veggies, that come together beautifully! Also on the Appetizer list…… is my NEW FAVORITE SHRIMP! Which is PINK, Wild Caught Gulf Shrimp Cocktail! For $15.95, you’ll get FOUR HUGE....SWEET.... Pink Gulf Shrimp, with a side of cocktail sauce. The Shrimp is soo sweet…..all you really need is a squeeze of lemon on each shrimp….Delicious! There is an absolute Delicious list of healthy salads you could choose from. I would suggest since you’re in the Florida Keys, where fresh fish and shellfish are brought to the FL Keys Steak & Lobster House Daily, that you try not to EAT a SALAD….although delicious….for your main meal! Listen to some of these AWESOME Entrees! First …… All of the seafood is bought fresh DAILY to the Fl Keys Steak & Lobster House Restaurant and prepared to order. All dinners are served with your choice of two sides. You can get the fresh vegetable of the day and a small house salad as your sides. AND…..Unlimited soup and salad bar can be added to any entrée for just $6.95 The first Delicious Healthy Menu Option is..... The Broiled Seafood Platter on the menu for $32.95 You get…..Fresh Mahi…shrimp….scallops and….. a crab cake broiled to perfection! I was very tempted to get this entrée….and next time I visit….I will get it…..but I saw Coconut-Macadamian Nut Crusted Snapper on the menu and I flipped! The Coconut Macadamian Crusted Snapper is Pan Fried in olive oil, and a Mango Sauce and then topped with Red Peppers in a butter sauce onto your plate! No hesitation for me…..That’s what I ordered! When I go somewhere that has fresh fish and can properly cook and prepare fish…..I order it! The Snapper filet was white, flaky and the blend of coconut macadamian nut with mango sauce was BEAUTIFUL! The Snapper also comes with 2 sides, which I ordered the grilled vegetables and a small house salad. The Snapper Entree costs $32.95, but I’ll tell you what…….It was the BEST DAMN Snapper I have EVER had! There are other fantastic seafood entrees on the menu too! IF you feel like steak, chops or ribs…..they have wonderful entrees on the menu for you too. They pretty much cater to everyone at FL Keys Steak & Lobster Restaurant. They even have a kid’s menu! They also have Free Raised Veal & Poultry entrees and they have Vegetarian entrees too! They have a Spicy Grilled Tofu Salad for $16.95 Which is Served with mixed greens, walnuts & raisins covered with a spicy dressing. The Healthy options on this menu is ABUNDANT Nation!
