Welcome to Episode 70 of Nooks and Crannies! Street Hockey vs. Public Drinking: The Perpetual Canadian Dilemma :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Howdy folks, thanks for sticking with us through our hiatus! We Back! This one is very much; the title says it all…We kick things off with another edition of 90’s Memories feat: Old Man Matty. We are talking street hockey: how to do it, why we do it and why everyone called Matt, Ty Conklin. Turns out, Evan comes from meaner streets than Mamoo and I found this amazing Rollerblade promo video on youtube, see link below and listen for the Action Jackson rap! After a little music from Cullah, we just basically talk about Matt’s Unabashed Love of Drinking in Public…GEEEEEOOOOO! How to do it well, how not to get caught, how it changed Evan’s life for the better, and then we hear a few disgusting teenage Evan drinking stories. Don’t eat during this part, its rough Anywhozydoozy, Talk to y’all in less than 5 weeks, Aren’t we Lucky, Peace and Solidarity while fighting those good fights! ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: The Skip and Josh Podcast: I have been insta-downloading this for the last 5 years, without fail...you should too (https://skipandjosh.com) N&C Episodes Skippy Graced us with His Presence on: https://nooksandcrannies.podbean.com/e/59eh-the-view-from-america-s-hat-or-how-to-explain-trump-to-canadian-teens https://nooksandcrannies.podbean.com/e/59bee-progressive-politics-is-normal-up-here-or-why-canadians-are-so-confused Wade Hemsworth – Black Fly (1949) National Film Board (https://www.nfb.ca/film/blackfly) Rollerblade…The Ride Continues feat: Action Jackson’s rap (https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=6fEqPLIT3SA) :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: N&C Links All The Episodes https://nooksandcrannies.podbean.com All Our Links in One Place https://linktr.ee/nooksandcrannies Drop us a line: Nooksandcranniespod@gmail.comTweet a little Tweet at Us: https://twitter.com/NooksCrannie Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/nooksandcranniespodcast Ponder Evan’s Blurry Pictures: https://www.instagram.com/nooks_and_crannies_pod/ Find Nooks and Crannies on Spotify Follow, Rate and Review on Podchaser (please!) Welcome to Nooks and Crannies!EMERGENCY SUITE: COVID 19 or why we should have taken this as seriously as Matty did? ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::Alright, everything will be alright...right??This is part 1 of 2, where I snipped all the COVID Corona Virus segments we did and smooshed them together around some poignant music. We hear from Evan and Matty at the start of the pandemic (recorded March 1st written in mid Feb) where Matt regales Evan with his existential dread and Evan tranquilizes Mamoo, or attempts to..This is the one where Matt pulled a Nostradamus and predicted everything aside from the #BLM demonstrations.Told ya so!We then hear from the illustrious Heather the Commie, 4th wheel on the pod, discussing the socio-economic and racialized intersectional dynamic and push backs, we basically talk all the politics, and most of the economics! The last segment, is Evan and Matt having a playful good time talking about the Great Toilet Paper Drought of 2020! Among other anthropological matters (perspectives and experiences that speak to the cultural and social dynamics at play).I will pump the next one out tonight, then for the rest of the week...its ALL the US Politics! Just to give ya’all something to ponder while fighting off proud boys at the polls....Be Well Folks, Peace and Solidarity, Keep Fighting, and if you do, then everything gonna be alright.:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::On The Media: https://www.wnycstudios.org/podcasts/otm/episodes/on-the-media-black-swansHeather’s Newest Creation, Create your Future Productionshttp://yourfuturecreator.com/podcasts ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::N&C LinksAll The Episodeshttps://nooksandcrannies.podbean.comAll Our Links in One Placehttps://linktr.ee/nooksandcranniesDrop us a line: Nooksandcranniespod@gmail.comTweet a little Tweet at Us: https://twitter.com/NooksCrannieFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/nooksandcranniespodcastPonder Evan’s Blurry Pictures: https://www.instagram.com/nooks_and_crannies_pod/Find Nooks and Crannies on SpotifyFollow, Rate and Review on Podchaser (please!)Graphics by Donna Humehttps://donnahumedesigns.com/contact :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::Theme Music Attribution:Cullah - "Neurosis of the Liver" on "Cullah The Wild" https://www.cullah.com/discography/cullah-the-wild/neurosis-of-the-liver Under license (CC BY 4.0) https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0Cullah - "Falling" on "Cullahtivation" https://www.cullah.com Under license (CC BY 4.0) https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0
Welcome to Nooks and Crannies! Side-Bars: Karrington the Real Dude on all things, Political Gaming and Rye! :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Welcome to first timer Karrington from Real Dudes on Indie Gaming: https://www.realdudespodcast.com/about Karrington, bless his heart, made the terrible mistake of suggesting that he is “not really a political kinda guy” on DM before chatting, ‘Ol Matty took this as an affront and challenge! :-P 1:55:30 later..this is the result. We kick things off with Mamoo brutalizing another introduction before continuing our off mic convo on Canadian fermented products, including a shoe-horned historical tidbit about Prohibition. We then talk about Karrington et.al.’s really compelling show, I had no idea Indie Game development was such a vibrant field, we also share some old-school techie memories from the 90’s including Matty’s love of 3.5inch floppy’s. I appreciate that the Real Dudes make space for underrepresented groups and individuals in the gaming space. This was my opening…I politically doubled down or double-doubl’ed eh? We cap this rangy 30 with the story of how his parents met-met in college and then I edited out the story of how I swept Melly off her feet back in 2006. Love ya Love! Welcome to Episode 47 of Nooks and Crannies! Dialectical Post-Concussed Journeys of Reflexive Embodied Self-Discovery w/Dr. Woolf :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: *******************TRIGGER WARNING****************** (21:40) Discussion of Suicidal Thoughts and Attempts **3mins worth *********************SOUND WARNING********************** Baby! :-) I edited as much out as I could, heads up, its about half way in for 5 mins :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Welcome to Nooks and Crannies! This is Part 2 of a fascinating conversation that Matty was privileged to have with “The Good Doctor” Dr. Woolf (PhD. Spiritual Psych), if you missed it, here is Part 1 where Doc describes his “Big 3” concussions and how it has likely impacted his entire life: https://nooksandcrannies.podbean.com/e/43-my-so-called-post-concussed-life-with-dr-woolf Turns out that no matter what the over-wrought highly alienating academic term, concept or name drop that Mamoo flings his way, Dr. Woolf is able to one-up my name drop and provide a more thoughtful analysis! So lets talk dialectical phenomenological existentialism, why the eff not eh? After scrutinizing the Mind-Body dialectic, Dr. Woolf asks Matty to describe his Ontological orientation towards the world as it relates to TBI (Traumatic Brain Injuries) and whether or not I have a grounding in faith *this guy is the best folks, seriously, might have found Evan’s replacement ;-) After pontificating on myself for a bit, we cover both of our “Journey’s of Self-Discovery” when it comes to concussions; for Matt it was seeing the researchers from Boston University’s Concussion Legacy Foundation on Larry King Live back in 2008, Dr. Woolf recently enrolled as well, for him it was seeing his son, unfortunately, being involved in a MVA and the resulting high-level of care he received (2019) which compelled the Good Doc on his own existential journey of self discovery through mutual learning with his son and his health care professionals who practiced a huge amount of empathy *which is the “cultural change” in medicine that has happened since Boston U started their research ‘08 ****Trigger Warning (21:40) Suicidal Thoughts and Actions**** We get into the Big S here, it’s a common complaint of TBI survivors that suicidal thoughts and notions, or in some cases acts of self-harm and attempts, are quite common. We discuss Dr. Woolf’s life-long struggles here for about 4 MINs. We also discuss the relation between brain damage and pharmaceutical side-effects, especially SSRI’s *Just want to note, they don’t work for me but if you are in need of acute or long-term mental health pharmaceutical intervention, please explore this option. And to cap things off, we knee cap Mormonism a bit, and especially how it impacted his understanding of himself and the wider world around him. Ya..we covered a lot of ground, met the guy 4 days before on FB, talked for 3 times longer than I thought and, it was so intensely thought provoking that I knew halfway through that he will be a repeat guest! Stay tuned, and, boy Aren’t I lucky!?! ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Boston University’s Concussion Legacy Foundation: https://concussionfoundation.org Dr. Woolf’s Tunes on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCfYzLWT8rGADM1QPZD4v5pw Simple Rituals – Doc Woolf Music https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OxIqvR3RCyo :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: N&C Links All The Episodes Our Social Links in One Place Drop us a line: Nooksandcranniespod@gmail.com Tweet a little Tweet at Us: https://twitter.com/NooksCrannie Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/nooksandcranniespodcast Ponder Evan’s Blurry Pictures: https://www.instagram.com/nooks_and_crannies_pod/ Find Nooks and Crannies on Spotify Follow, Rate and Review on Podchaser (please!) Welcome to Nooks and Crannies! Mini: Netflixian Recommendations with Paul or Why Matt Loves Movies w/ Cannibalism! :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Howdy folks, Paul and I used this bit of the recording as a warm up before launching into the COVID/Corona Conversation, fascinating one actually: https://nooksandcrannies.podbean.com/e/45-the-devil-went-down-to-georgia-and-paul-has-it-on-his-mind/ Basically this is exactly what it sounds like, just back and forth rapid fire style recs that you may have seen already and a few that you may have missed. Jordan (doc) M+P Community (TV) M+P The Good Life (TV) P-A satirical show about heaven and the meaning of life, some of Paul’s favorite content delves into these subjects The Platform (Indie Movie) M-Cuz he love me the taste of human flesh, but just in some circumstances…back to Don Quixote!! Three Identical Strangers (doc) P-Compelling doc about triplets meeting each other as young adults, sounds more interesting then that folks :-) Hell on Wheels (TV) M-Surprisingly compelling Western that delves into political themes well Free Solo (Doc) P-Matty the coward will not see this because it made Paul say “oh, oh, my…” a few times. Try to watch on the biggest screen possible! Bonus content at the end from Mamoo, outlining and justifying his raging Matt-Crush on fellow handsome BC boy: Ryan, I could get lost unpacking that smile for years, Reynolds! ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: N&C Links All The Episodes Our Social Links in One Place Drop us a line: Nooksandcranniespod@gmail.com Tweet a little Tweet at Us: https://twitter.com/NooksCrannie Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/nooksandcranniespodcast Ponder Evan’s Blurry Pictures: https://www.instagram.com/nooks_and_crannies_pod/ Find Nooks and Crannies on Spotify Follow, Rate and Review on Podchaser (please!) Welcome to Episode 42 of Nooks and Crannies! Meaty Musical Marinades, or How/Why Matt Grew a Foot in 3 Months!? :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Welcome to a very eclectic episode of Nooks and Crannies! We were supposed to kick things off with three Spotify playlists: Brain Expansion: Classical, Post-Concussed, and Apocalyptic… But instead Mamoo takes Evan along for a crazy Ivan (abrupt and unexpected left-hand turn, it’s a submarine move Matty picked up from Hunt for the Red October), and talked about our highschool dayz; including the East Coast-Westside, is the best side, Rap Battles of the mid 90s and why Evan was more pretentious than that old man hat got at Tip Top and the fact that he had to audition for his Art’s High School, would lead you to believe. Then we get into the music, we start with Brain Expansion: Classical, where Evan calls Vi a “Basic White Girl” then we move into Matty’s Post-Concussed playlist which actually for the first time in our friendship, impressed Evan with my surprisingly relevant and artistically contemporary choices (spoiler: I plagiarized the shit out of another playlist! #winning). We cap this slap-happy segment off with my Apocalyptic playlist, which I knocked together in less than 15 mins with vi at breakfast as I was slowly loosing my mind mannnnnnnn…. Oh, hey carnivores, ever wanted to learn how to make a meat marinade? Well, hit this time stamp (24:52) to find out! Aren’t we lucky (I know, it don’t feel this way), be well and talk to you all soon! Much Love. ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Spotify Playlists: Brain Expansion; Classical: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1vDTs7Pnpm6iqg5HyMjIKO?si=AS7SSVTvSx2b9DErs1SNqg Post Concussed: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1vDTs7Pnpm6iqg5HyMjIKO?si=AS7SSVTvSx2b9DErs1SNqg Apocalyptic: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5AIqtm5Fgqkz3u0qXoIf7S?si=iF9RRL7DRKmDxvxAZftprw :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: N&C Links All The Episodes Our Social Links in One Place Our Music Playlists Drop us a line: Nooksandcranniespod@gmail.com Tweet a little Tweet at Us: https://twitter.com/NooksCrannie Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/nooksandcranniespodcast Ponder Evan’s Blurry Pictures: https://www.instagram.com/nooks_and_crannies_pod/ Find Nooks and Crannies on Spotify Follow, Rate and Review on Podchaser (please!) Welcome to Episode 36 of Nooks and Crannies! Stranger Danger Real-Estate Markets or Funky-Town Money Laundering :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Welcome back to Canada Evan who just spent 10 days in Cuba! His gastrointestinal track is proof positive that he had a “blast” evidently he still is…Gross. (3:00) We got yet another Spotify Playlist, for Evan’s ridicule. Violet’s Funky Town; old-school funk and disco era tunes that make Vi wiggle. Matt also discovers Evan’s Achilles Heel to counter-act his critiques: Heavy Unwarranted Praise! (9:03) Might have been the single malt; we cut a quick little Meta Pod Babble Segment about Wholistic Pod-Intentionality, or some shit… (12:26) This is a big ol Political Segment about the ongoing issue(s) of Money Laundering in BC’s Casino’s and Canada’s Real-Estate market. This is a story that E and M both know quite a bit about, so we give solid background and provide our own real life experiences witnessing the skyrocketing costs of housing alongside the Stagnation of Real Income levels. I don’t know what got up my ass on this one folks, but, Mamoo grows an impressive beard, his hair gets a little zany and boy oh boy his Marxist vanguard waves ferociously! (27:51): We are resurrecting the Podcast Recommendation Section plagiarized from Matty’s Corner on the Podstuff Podcast. We start with the good Canadian Kids; Skip and Josh who have a solid a-political(ish) pod about professional and NCAA sports, if you are looking for coverage and solid analysis on all things players, scores, owners, transactions and interesting tidbits on the Media. Friends of our show too! The Edge of Sports podcast is intensely political and hosted by the Wokest sports podcaster: Dave Zarin. If you are looking for progressive athletic coverage that goes way beyond the headlines, digging into the Nooks and Crannies of sports politics, check out the Edge of Sports podcast! Burn it All Down is like EoS but from a feminist and female-centric perspective. Hosted by four outstandingly brilliant co-hosts one of which is in Canada, eh! All the episodes and topics focus on female athletes and their sports (pro and amateur) and due to the extreme bias in the mainstream press you will surely hear dozens of new things on each listen. It’s a segmented show, love the Burn Pile btw, and the guests they have are very thought-provoking. One of the best new pod discoveries of my last 6 months! Keep up the fine work!! Last but not least; Evan brings in Why Theory about psycho-analytic theory and its applications *theory is the perspectives used and applied to data to help analysis, perspective basically. Anywho, Evan comes out of the Freudian Closet on this one, weird little psycho-analyzer, whereas Matty is of course a Jungian. Couple of Pedantic dillwads eh? (34:31) We cap things off with another 90s Memories from Old Man Matty’s Dimming Mind, this edition we have the really dark and depressing: STRANGER DANGER! Hear about Matt’s bearspray and personal auditory alert device, how my inability to go “downtown” until I was 21 shaped my entire personality, note how Evan notes this, hear about BC’s propensity to produce serial killers, some really sad conversations, how Evan met his first Anthropologist in Winnipeg, how 8y.o. Mamoo sidestepped the Jerk Off Specialist on his way to Mac’s; and we cap things with a broad discussion (future episode for sure) about True Crime as a pod genre and our puzzlement over its continuous popularity. **I will mention this in the episode too, sorry for the giggles, that was nervous laughter on Matt’s part, true-crime and the cases makes me sad and nervous, really uncomfortable, its why I was trying desperately to somewhat make light of experiences we had…and why this will be our last TC segment ever! Others that do these kinds of shows do so properly** Talks to You All soon, aren’t I lucky?? Next Episode: A deep dive on Zombie’s with our very own Cinematic Expert Paaaauuuh__ll Combs! Chris, from Playcomics Podcast, managed to weasel his way on the episode, probably payback for me attempting to relentlessly kick him off his show and replace him with myself. Welcome to Episode 32 of Nooks and Crannies! Decant the Halls with Old Growth Grinches or Turning the Tables on Henley Santa? :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Epen and Mamoo kick things off with some much overdue weather gabbing, before launching into a Holiday Season babble-festivus! We talk about our favorite holiday movies, including Elf and why Evan has issues with Will Farrell’s elfish-pants…Matt likes his chest hair..so, ya. Stay-at-home parent Matt gives you some solid child-gift buying tips, while Evan and Matt used the tears of Amazon’s Robots to save online. Evan has a weirdly spot-on Seinfeld-esque rant about receiving cliché hobby related gifts and why he keeps buying so many antique decanters! ***14:42 SANTA PART*** Folks who might be listening to this with little ears in the room, don’t know why you would be, but at 14:42 I share the story where I was ALMOST convinced that Santa MIGHT NOT BE an immortal elf from the Magnetic North Pole…So skip forward to 15:33 to hear the rest and the lead into Henley Santa****** (15:58) Hold onto your authentic beard Santy, Mamoo is about to turn the tables on you with the hardest most tangentially unrelated yet all related to phenomenology, questions that have been burning since my childhood! Like, why so many names, what are you trying to hide? How did Rudolph’s nose get that way and how do you get around the world so fast *Aside from methane empowered, carrot infused, reindeer farts! Oh and if my sister’s conduct warranted her perpetual inclusion on the Naughty List, then why did she always, totally, like always get at least like the same level of present if not even better presents for like, seriously, like our whole life!! IT’s NOT FAIR!!! **Spoiler: Turns out, there is no such thing as this list, Santa thinks every kid is special and pure and perfect, but if there was one…boy howdy I just got my smart-alek self on it! Thanks again Santa, I will leave some carrots out that will surely be Glitter Free (LINK book and past episode)! And I will go ahead and drink that beer ahead of time, but save you a wee sip ;) (35:30) To wrap things up, as per tradition on Nooks and Crannies, apparently, we will cap this one off with a little Holiday story. Matt is going to ATTEMPT to read How the Grinch Stole Christmas to wee Ms Vi. If she says, nah guy, then Matt will be solo-reading HtGSC! Plus Violet’s podcasting debut with her speed metal rendition of Jingle Bells! Enjoy the season folks, and for my fellow podcasters, who are grieving as Matty is too, be well to yourself and others over the next few weeks. I am here for you if you need to chat or someone to listen. Welcome to Episode 31 of Nooks and Crannies! Henley Santa is Coming to Town, W/Out Glittery Reindeer Relish!! :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Deck the Halls, grab your Santy Hat and Scotch, it’s the Holiday Season here at Nooks and Crannies, and who better to talk to than the Right Jolly Old Elf Himself! Professional Father Christmas, Henley Santa! Who is Joining us from the other-side of the pond! Mike and Matty kick things off by hearing how Mike became Henley Santa and why he chose such a posh, up-market name, and how these fateful choices has lead to a vibrant post-retirement career which leaves room for volunteering and basically a lot of “good fun” Matty then steers the chat towards professionalism and the industry, including working conditions, how to interact with children and adults with various chronic ailments or challenges *super interesting side convo on ASL/BSL and Makaton, and ways to be empathetic by “staying in character” asking yourself: would Santa do this? Then I had to ask: what do you do when a ‘snot-nosed little *kid*’ tries to trip you up with tough questions to impress (lets be honest) HIS buddies :) Henley Santa has a tonne of insights in this regard, including his views on what makes a “Bad Santa” The Ministry of Fun is Henley Santa’s booking agency, first off, great name eh? Its like you are not allowed by law to not have fun just so long as you follow the outlined regulations and procedures. ANYWAY, they also have a Santa school that has been written about and just seems like a lot of fun! We also talk about Henley Santa’s Publishing efforts, including a quick retelling of his version of the Gingerbread Man story and why we should not leave Glitter Laced granola out for reindeer! Partial proceeds from the sale of his books go to support a local youth who is undergoing extreme cancer treatments, link to the FB page and ways to help below. We end the conversation on a very serious, but we both think, crucially important point: What happens when a child discloses serious neglect or abuse? What is your role or responsibilities in this regard and is there any training aside from a Criminal Background Check that is provided to Santa’s who may encounter vulnerable populations. Phew, tough but compelling Ho, Ho, Oh, did you think we were done?? Nah buddy, hit subscribe because a few days before Christmas, we will release the last portion of this chat where Matty turns the tables, reverts to wee lil Mamoo and absolutely GRILLS Santa with all the tough unanswered/unanswerable questions I had for him from Childhood, including: why did my sister get gifts despite being perpetually naughty, why did you not slam those beers I left out for you, how you get around the world so fast, and of course: are you like a reverse immortal, aged till 65 then retired from aging or something? AND, appalling Elfish Working Conditions! Love and Miss you Mom, I know this was one that you were looking forward to hearing, and I know you are listening from afar. Welcome to Episode 30 of Nooks and Crannies! 30 - The Meritocratic Mythos of Private Equity Firms or a Workers Revolt with Austerity and Chaka Khan :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: (2:00) Meritocratic Meritocracy is a Relativistic Mythos: Evan and Matt kick things off with an interrogation of the concept of Meritocracy and how it relates to education and work. We look at how meritocratic expectations are embodied by many undergrads from privileged backgrounds are reinforced through their lived experiences vs how working class students approach expectations of meritocracy. Then Evan brings the chat to the workplace, how the idea of ‘hard work will pay off’ is a mythos *not totally untrue, just rare in practice but reinforced through cultural artifacts like the media. It is evident that Matty has been out of the ‘job game’ and ‘employment field’ for quite some time, but he tries to keep up… (20:38) Violet’s Terrible Two’s: Vi announced her presence on the pod so the BFF’s decided to do a lil impromptu ditty on her adventures *and our, with being a cantankerous 21/4 year old! We also chat about Matt’s birthday and both make each other feel bad for forgetting each others B-Day’s! Miss you mom… (24:20) Battle of Blair Mountain: Funny and tragic story from our collective Labour history. Hey, you like your weekend’s and 8 hour day? Maybe you are like me and think, hey Domestic Labour is just as valuable as conventional Labour..Or maybe you find yourself thinking: “You know what this protest needs, gatling-guns and homemade shrapnel, to spice things up!” Well hold onto your private detective agency badge folks, Evan is about to tell ya’all and an exasperated Mamoo about The Battle of Blair Mountain (W. Virginia)! (40:43) Impromptu Cast Commercial: Despite this being a pretty solid recording sesh by your valiant co-host’s, we had major technical issues (tape delay due to faulty internet), luckily we use Cast! The exceptional audio recording platform that has saved my arse on multiple occasions (I recorded the entire Chronicity Series *forthcoming, on Cast, I had major connectivity issues then too, the recordings are clean as a whistle). So if any podcaster is curious, give Cast a Try. (41:52) Timmies, Canada’s Favorite Private Equity Firm: What started as a begin yet very common Canadian Question: How do you take your Tim’s? Diatribed into a interesting investigation into Private Equity Firms, especially 3G Capital. Here is a link to their contact page, if you are curious as to why they use Temporary Foreign Workers or maybe just..what’s the deal with the fries at Tim’s? Be sure to reach out: https://www.3g-capital.com/contact.html After complaining about this for a bit, Evan offers up a couple more examples of the evils of PEF’s (Canadian Media conglomeration and the US housing market). Good Times! (57:42) And to end things on a lighter note, listen to this Spotify playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1KLqQq6TnTyfLG81ej1oaq and find out why the universalistic opinion (Evan and Matt’s wife Melly) all think that Matty has the musical styling’s of a 52 y.o. woman from Ohio. Yes folks, this is Matt’s much anticipated by no one: Great Female Singers (ongoing), recommendations are strongly encouraged eh..happy to add to this generic list :) :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: N&C Links All The Episodes Drop us a line: Nooksandcranniespod@gmail.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/nooksandcranniespodcast Ponder Evan’s Blurry Pictures: https://www.instagram.com/nooks_and_crannies_pod/ Find Nooks and Crannies on Spotify Follow, Rate and Review on Podchaser (please!) Welcome to Episode 28 of Nooks and Crannies! Halloween Spectacular: Self Immolating Sens Fans, Floppy Disked ICQ chatting, Making Bread with Cod Baskets. :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: (4:37) Evan immediately breaks his promise of a “no rant” episode by absolutely loosing it on Ottawa Senator’s owner Eugene Melnyk. Folks this is the best rant in Nooks and Crannies history! In solidarity with my valiant co host, here are just a few stories that support his vitriol; Gambling Debts, apparently he is trying to get his private jet back (sad really), how he literally guilt tripped a diehard Sens fan into giving him a chunk of their liver! and of course, rumors continue to swirl about him selling the team but he won’t because he is likes this shit. Oh, and we also talk about the Canucks, who are going to be okay going forward, Poor Evan. (18:13) Hold onto your Cod Basket’s folks, cuz its time for another Canadian Heritage Moment! This week we are discussing the fake-Italian not quite British ‘explorer’ John, don’t you dare call me Giovanni, Cabot, and the “discovery” of cod off the coast of Newfoundland! Fish heads, fish heads, eat them up yum! (22:25) Get your floppy disks out folks, we are taking the time machine back to like I dunno, lets say 1989…Its another addition of “Dimming 90’s Memories with Mamoo”. Matty explains to Evan what the eff DOS is, how to download shareware games from a Surrey Library database, stealing AOL CD’s, and the glorious world of ICQ *Uh..uooo! (Side Note: First Google suggestion on ICQ was “Is ICQ still a thing?” Apparently it is!! Then Evan turns the tables, talking about the quite frightening sounding Omegle… :( According to their still existing website, they see things a little differently: The Internet is full of cool people; Omegle lets you meet them. When you use Omegle, we pick someone else at random so you can have a one-on-one chat. (35:50) Then for no reason whatsoever, Matty decided to explain to Epen how to make bread from hand (by hand?). Two notes that I forgot to mention, for egg wash; add a small splash of water and whip that up a bit with a fork, secondly; when baking with milk add no more than half what the recipe calls for, for liquid (this recipe calls for 2 cups of water, sub 1 of those for milk), and you will want to microwave that milk first (like 20-30 seconds). Enjoy! Even though your first loaf will suck… (44:55) And to wrap things up, the fella’s felt obliged to talk about their least favorite holiday, Halloween *We also hate Thanksgiving, which happens in October in Canada, not really sure why…Anyway, we keep it rather non-ranty, we talk about our favorite childhood costumes, trick or treat strategies (including Matty’s full sized chocolate bar recon schemes), teenage hijinx *including Matty’s near nard loss due to a hammered down screetch-a-roo, and why we both hate adult Halloween, but also why we need to get Evan back into that cape and bejeweled crown! ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Episode 28 Links: Fun Eugene Melnyk Story’s: https://www.macleans.ca/society/health/did-eugene-melnyk-jump-the-queue-for-a-new-liver/ https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/ottawa-senators-owner-eugene-takes-legal-action-to-get-private-jet-back-1.5287642 https://thehockeywriters.com/ottawa-senators-ownership-problem-an-nhl-problem/ https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/casino-cash-chips-melnyk-1.5304618 James Beard bread book: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/545911.Beard_on_Bread Mark Bittman’s How to Cook Everything: http://www.howtocookeverything.com/ John Cabot, Canadian Heritage Minute: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ds8G9sFOK5w :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: N&C Links All The Episodes Drop us a line: Nooksandcranniespod@gmail.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/nooksandcranniespodcast Ponder Evan’s Blurry Pictures: https://www.instagram.com/nooks_and_crannies_pod/ Find Nooks and Crannies on Spotify Graphics by Donna Hume ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Theme Music Attribution: Cullah - "Neurosis of the Liver" on "Cullah The Wild" https://www.cullah.com/discography/cullah-the-wild/neurosis-of-the-liver Under license (CC BY 4.0) https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/
Welcome to Episode 26 of Nooks and Crannies! Chronic Shirtless Ambrosia Dryer Balls with Susan and MC Cullah :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Welcome back listeners young and old, this week we have THEME MUSIC and provide you all with a roadmap of the episode! Matty decided now was as good a time as ever to let Evan know that he wants to graphically suck his neck in order to get at that sweet, sweet, young blood coursing through his veins. Yes that’s right, we are talking about Ambrosia “Health” a total bullshit company that promised all sorts of health benefits from direct (parabiosis) transfusion of young peoples blood into the elderly, all for the Low Low price of $8000! Rest well, this company has since changed its name, continues to operate in (of course) Florida (sorry Paul) and sadly it is not the only such company in existence. Real doozy folks. Hold onto your jugulars! Next we hit you with another exciting Canadian Heritage Min, just in time for Basketball season and of course Hockey season! After taking a puck in the face and cutting out the bottom of that peach basket, Mamoo describes how one can get lost easily in the woods of Victoria, BC whilst shirtless and alone, when you do not follow the simple commands of the 911 operator who is just asking you to hug a tree! Then, of course, Matty decides now is the time to introduce Evan to the magical, and static free!, world of Sheep Hair Dryer Balls. Turns out, my lil climate cavalier, Evan, actually hangs his undies out on a line like a freakin peasant! We then take the ol’ Hatchet to everyone’s favorite milk-toast broadcaster NPR and their willingness to sell out to big corporation who simply want to Green Wash their evil ordeals! Shame on you Terry Gross!! Next up is Susan, one of the 18 participants in the Chronicity Series (upcoming). I misspoke, this segment from her interview discusses her hernia’s and how life seems to happen right at the same time bad-health strikes. Ps. Her Husband seems like the most badass meteorologist of all time! Then for no reason whatsoever, Matt informs Evan of the glorious glories of Nova Scotia. Go eat a scallop and an Acadian meat pie while driving the Cabot Trail and be sure to make that right hand turn into Meat Cove. You might seriously regret that actually. ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Business Insider articles on Ambrosia ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: N&C Links All The Episodes Drop us a line: Nooksandcranniespod@gmail.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/nooksandcranniespodcast Ponder Evan’s Blurry Pictures: https://www.instagram.com/nooks_and_crannies_pod/ Find Nooks and Crannies on Spotify Graphics by Donna Hume ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Theme Music Attribution: Cullah - "Neurosis of the Liver" on "Cullah The Wild" https://www.cullah.com/discography/cullah-the-wild/neurosis-of-the-liver Under license (CC BY 4.0) https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/
Welcome to Episode 25 of Nooks and Crannies! (9:25) Hooked on Phonics certainly did not work for young Mamoo…(10:18) Hold onto your office chairs folks, it’s time for another edition of Pedantic Pedagogy with Matty! This time Matt teaches you all how not to be a pedantic asshole in academic settings, a life skill we can all carry forth in our lives..which is a very pedantic asshole-ish thing for me to have written. This time we are discussing the ways to go about providing your critiques in a respectful and ultimately hirer-able way, here is the formula: Question + Comment + Critique (in that order) = Proper Academic Interpersonal Methodology (19:05) *Still work-shopping the title* Back in my Day w/Old Man Matty: 80’s and 90’s Memories from my Dimming Mind!* Get your Smashers out and set aside your favorite 8-Balls and Poison’s, and LET’S PLAY SOME POGS!! Correct me if I am wrong, but I think we just made podcast history by being the first show ever to tackle this subject. Let us know! (26:10) In this edition of Evan Splains *I don’t care what he says, this is podcast GOLD!* he schools Matt on the dynamics of the US Democratic Primary race. He covers the top 3, how to pick a VP, why I might be a Liberal Manchurian Candidate and provides a classic Full Throated Leftist Populist: Call to Action! Boom. (42:03) Revisiting the Canadian Heritage Minutes. These were 1 min public education films produced by some obscure wing of the Canadian Federal Government sometime in the early 90’s and have hence forth been in syndication I suppose, ever since. Welcome to Episode 23 of Nooks and Crannies! Dated and Used Critical Pedagogy and Israeli Electoral Playoff Runs Welcome back to the podcast folks and thanks for sticking around during this tragic hiatus. Next episode will be an in memoriam Tribute Episode to Evan’s biggest fan and Mamoo’s Mom, Sue Sanderson…Love you mom, as you knew. This week is the episode we had banked from a number of weeks ago, we kick things off with an impassioned trip that Matty took to the crème de la crème Used Book store in Victoria BC called Russell Books (ps. NERD ALERT!! You can order online eh...) (5:02) “What Just Happened?” - On this edition of WJH? Evan graciously informed Matty on the results and the context behind the recent (3 months ago) Israeli Elections and how the Ultra-Orthodox Jewish community is being used as a wedge issue to split the Right in that country. Fascinating as always, and here you thought I just keep Evan around for his incredibly dashing appearance?!? Here is a more recent article, not sure but it seems Israel just had another election..like yesterday or something! (19:30) Hey, folks did you know that Matty volunteers with a great group of Retired Folk down at his local forest pulling invasive species out and having just a grand ol’ time! Go volunteer with seniors, they will make you feel young and important!! _ Lil Nooks and Crannies PSA there eh… (22:55) No one asked for it, but here it is…the much anticipated CRITICAL PEDAGOGY segment!!! Mamoo is going to pedantically and egotistically teach you all how to “Think Proper”. What a dick eh? (35:27) And to put a wrap on this thing, we, of course, give our predictions for the NHL and NBA finals. Welcome to Episode 22 of Nooks and Crannies! Bond and Brexit w/Post-9/11 Cinematic Commentary No intro this week, instead Evan and Matt decided to breakdown and tear apart James Bond movies for their misogynistic racism and overall campy vibes. (10:31) Yes folks, Paul and Mamoo managed to wrap things up on our marathon Action Flick break down recording. Here we chat about Jurassic Park and of course matt has to show horn in Three Ninjas a Dub Pee exclusive must rewatch! (16:02) After this, Paul gives us some interesting thoughts and provides some compelling connections around the Post-9/11 era and its effects on Film and Culture, politics and society. Fascinating work Pauly, considering we were 2hrs deep at this point!! (27:56) No one asked for it, except Mammo, so here it is…The Brexit analysis segment!! Evan explains all the dynamics, including needing to re-write their trade deals and general effects on the economy of Britain and the EU, why the Right has sold out to xenophobic isolationists, the Irish border (never heard this point made before, smart boy Evan is eh?), what effect if any this has on revitalizing the Left and the fellers finish up making some broader international connections. This is Evan’s best segment so far in Matt’s books…really good job buddy! (45:53) And, Paul is back…we finish up for reals on Sin City and Ong Bak which is Paul’s favorite type of movie, so we take a lil detour into Chinese martial arts films including the Final Fight scene of the Raid Redemption. We also answer the age-old action movie question; what happens when you send two goons in at once instead of one at a time?!?! Apparently, Tony Jaa will whoop you’re A$$! True, but I also needed both Joseph and Paul’s assistance because, SPOILER ALERT: Matt has never seen an Avengers movie, and has maybe only seen 20 mins of some random Iron Man movie at some point…So, ya. The conversation turned out to be fascinating and I know all you super fans out there will love it, and honestly, even those who are a little muh on Superhero sheeeeeet, will very much enjoy the analysis Paul and Joseph provide, which of course is well anchored in the Profundity that is Mamoo. ***PS: Duh, this is a spoiler episode, look at the title, don’t think you were not forewarned!!*** Cheering Crowd, http://eliotlash.com/ Crickets Chirping, http://soundcloud.com/roocza :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Hear Paul, don’t call me Cosmo, Csomo from Varmints and Chris, don’t call me Paul, Osborne from Play Comics join Matty on May 17th at 3:00 for a 30 min roundtable music playlist-athon in support of the 3rd Annual Livestream for the Cure event in support of The Cancer Research Institute Big thanks go to Nick Haskins from Epic Film Guys and RestuRant podcasts who has once again organized this and has continued to add more features like; Merchandise! Welcome to Episode 17 of Nooks and Crannies! Paa_ul_s Podcast: Action Flicks, First Blood Part 1ish This week on Nooks and Crannies, Paul Combs foolishly agreed to join Matty for what turned into an absolute marathon session, and I ain't talking about Paul’s Running, nope we did a genre deep dive on Action Movies. (5:05) We kick things off with an overview of some of the features of the genre, spoiler alert: not a lot (any) female leads until the 1980’s, so this is a dudefest episode…good thing Paul is so darn likable. Paul uses Commando as the quintessential action flick, we also name drop: Beverly Hills Cop as action-comedy, Rambo 3 to see Rambo in Afghanistan and the Last Action Hero as a perfect parody action movie. We then get into the real early history (8:15) including the Lumiere bros. classic “proof of concept” film from 1895 Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat technically this is the first “Action” film. (12:10) Buster Keaton (IMDB) gets a well deserved focus in this early history (1920’s), be sure to watch The General (1926) in Paul’s opinion it is his finest work or The Frozen North (1922) cuz its Buster in Canada! I also found this amazing interview he gave in the early 70’s overdubbed on a compilation of his greatest stunts. Paul reminded us all about Harold Lloyd who Matty treated like the lesser Keaton (14:35), but I did remember to bring up the famous hanging from a clock stunt from Safety Last! (1923). To cap the 20-30’s off, Matty gushes over Errol Flynn and the impact The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) had on young Mamoo when he was a wee lad (20:11), but not this one from the 20’s that is really quite awful. After an awkward edit break where I was planning on playing a movie trailer but thought better of it…We chat about Paul’s favorite role model James Bond and who he considers the personification of his own personality Sean Connery (28:20). The 1950-60’s was dominated by Westerns and military films when it came to “Action” films, the 1970’s was kinda depressing and Sci-fi then took over the action genre for the latter half of the decade. It was not until the 1980’s that the genre itself became fully fledged. So in this last segment (33:00), Paul and I try to name as many movies as possible, including for some reason T1 and T2? The OG Mad Max, The French Connection (35:26) Paul has a doozy of a tidbit on this film, Dirty Harry, Bullet surprised to learn that this is one of Paul’s favorites and he smartly explained why the late 60-70’s saw a boom in car-centric action movies, Death Race 2000 (1975) the amazing early Sylvester Stallone film, Dirty Dozen and The Wild Bunch, Independence Day and Saving Private Ryan dunno why here but there you go. Oh right, Matt tries to explain why there is no such thing as a Canadian Action movie but does throw Last of the Mohican out there as a pitiful example (46:00). Then we finally cap this half!?! That’s right folks, this is only the first half of the Marathon. But we end with one of the most controversial reveals in Nooks and Crannies HISTORY, Paul almost gets booted..it got real ugly (47:26). :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: N&C Links Archive of Episodes Topics and Lighthearted Complaints Watch Matty Fight on Social Ponder Evan’s Blurry Pictures Find Nooks and Crannies on Spotify Listen to Evan’s Much Superior Musical Picks Graphics by Donna Hume ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Proud of you Lindsay
Welcome to Episode 15 of Nooks and Crannies! Misogynistic Gardening and Unicorn Riots at Floyd’s Diner Surprise! Matty unilaterally moved Nooks and Crannies’ release day to Friday’s, sometimes Thursday’s. Tis a new day in paradise… Anywhooozy Doozy, This week on N&C we kick things off by digging around in Matty’s gardening adventures while Evan is mired in melting snow and sedimented dog poop. Although he did get a fun new office plant that is, honestly, it just sounds terrifying (4:51). Take a hard lefthanded turn (7:00) Matty lets Epen in on a little organization called Unicorn Riot that he heard about after hearing them featured on a recent On the Media episode called Hating in Plain Sight. Evan then misogynistically takes over the mic (13:21) to recommend Venus in Furs! A book published in 1870 which seems to have introduced the world to the magical world of Sadomasochism! So, folks, this is not as raunchy as it might seem at first glance, it is actually quite tame and in Evan’s humble opinion, kinda badly written and contains weak immature philosophy written by rich folks who do not need to live in the real world with all us stiffs who clearly do not have time for this kind of juvenility. However, obviously, I guess, books like this influenced Freud and friends in their establishment of personality typologies. Solid Evan reads in this one, hope you also agree. If not, Evan might spank me :( To allow the fellas a chance to collect themselves after that sensual Evan Reads, we play a couple banked mini-segments on future topics we are interested in; Eugenics in Iceland (28:33) and (32:18) Matt assigns Epen some homework, he gets to go deep dive Shoshana Zuboff who has written extensively on Surveillance Capitalism. Epen and Mamoo would like Kristaps, host of the amazing Eastern Border Podcast to read a recent David Brooks article called If Stalin had a Smartphone, report back with your findings comrade! *Sorry for the sound quality in these two segments, Matty fixed it. To close things out, Matty talks about the Amazing Floyd’s Diner in Victoria BC as a way of shamelessly sharing the one and only podcast-celebrity moment he will ever have (35:36). :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: N&C Links Archive of Episodes Topics and Lighthearted Complaints Watch Matty Fight on Social Ponder Matty’s Garden Wedge Find Nooks and Crannies on Spotify Graphics by Donna Hume ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Proud of you Lindsay

This week we hear the remainder of Pau_uuls Podcast; Westerns, be sure to take a look at the show notes to see the links that Capt. Concussion forgot to include in the last episode. Paul and Matt kick things off talking about The Wild Bunch (2:10) and its famous Bridge Scene, then advance theories as to why the Western died in the 80’s (4:35) including the Star Wars Factor (7:45) and the hottest of Hot Takes by Pauley (15:37). Mamoo decided that now was the time to deep dive on Lonesome Dove (17:03). Paul fills us in on the Waterworld of Westerns (22:09) and wrap up this section with some talk on Unforgiven (23:15). Amy Longard is an Ottawa based nutritionist that Matt met at a chronic pain gathering in Strathcona Park in the summer (24:28). Amy described how her own healthy lifestyle in some ways was the cause of her chronic illnesses and how this eventually led to chef’s training and a new career in nutritional care (30:10). Mattie proposes a theory (35:03) about the immediacy of nutritional efficacy and Amy bridges off this describe her own approach in helping others (39:55). Part 2 of this interview will play next week, stay tuned and in the meantime follow Amy on Instagram, sign up for her newsletter and read her blog. Last but not least, its Pau_uuls podcast again! We wrap things up continuing to debate the causality of Westerns decline in the ’80s (45:45), it got pretty heated, almost had to Kick Paul off the show just like I did to Evan.
