If you listen to us semi-regularly, you know that we were once again a part of the amazing Livestream For The Cure event this past month. Well, this week we are taking a video game franchise and turning it into a movie, or vice versa. That’s not all you get in this episode, as afterwards we hang out with the Livestream crew and talk movies, Furiosa, a bit about the show ending, and just generally merrymake with our ‘For the Cure’ family.  We want to thank everyone involved and everyone that stuck around and donated during our time. That said, the event is over, but there is never a bad time to donate and help to live in a world without cancer. With that said, enjoy the show!  Ok, here we go… Full Episode

NBA – National Basketball Association Last Night Portland Trailblazers 110, Detroit Pistons 104 Philadelphia 76ers 147, Indiana Pacers 143 Blazers 110, Pistons 104 – Lillard’s triple-double helps Blazers beat Pistons 110-104 Damian Lillard had 31 points, 13 rebounds and 12 assists, securing his second triple-double of the season before the end of the third quarter, and the Portland Trail Blazers beat the Detroit Pistons 110-104. The dynamic guard scored 16 points in the first quarter to give the Trail Blazers a 31-18 lead, and they had little trouble keeping a comfortable margin against a banged-up and slumping team for most of the night. Detroit pulled within six points with 1:39 left to fire up the previously quiet fans, and Jerami Grant quieted them with a 3-pointer on the ensuing possession. Grant finished with 26 points against his former team.  Former Kalamazoo Central and University of Michigan player Isaiah Livers matched a career high with 17 points for the Pistons, who have lost a season-high eight straight games. The Pistons were without injured starters Bojan Bogdanovic, Isaiah Stewart and rookie center Jalen Duran, along with key reserve Killian Hayes. Sixers 147, Pacers 143 – Embiid scores 42, Sixers beat Pacers 147-143 without much D Joel Embiid scored 42 points, James Harden added 14 points, 20 assists and nine rebounds, and the Philadelphia 76ers pulled away late for a 147-143 victory over the Indiana Pacers in a game virtually devoid of defense. Tyrese Haliburton led the Pacers with 40 points and 16 assists. Neither team led by more than six points through the first three quarters. The Sixers finally took control with a late 10-0 run. Anders Bjork had three primary assists, and Alex Stalock made 35 saves in his 11th career shutout. Lukas Reichel, Phillipp Kurashev and Jason Dickinson also scored as last-place Chicago snapped a four-game losing streak. Ottawa remained three points back of idle Pittsburgh for the second wild card in the Eastern Conference, wasting a prime opportunity to gain ground in the playoff race. MLB – Major League Baseball – Spring Training Yesterday Boston Red Sox 7, Detroit Tigers 1 Chicago Cubs 6, Seattle Mariners 2 White Sox were off Today St. Louis Cardinals at Detroit Tigers, 1:05 p.m. Chicago Cubs at Texas Rangers, 3:05 p.m. Milwaukee Brewers at Chicago White Sox, 3:05 p.m. MLB – Red Sox infielder Justin Turner hit in face by pitch Boston Red Sox infielder Justin Turner needed 16 stitches after he was hit in the face by a pitch during a spring training game against the Detroit Tigers. The 38-year-old Turner fell to the ground after getting drilled by right-hander Matt Manning. Turner's wife, Kourtney, posted to Instagram that the infielder had “16 stitches and a lot of swelling but we are thanking God for no fractures & clear scans.” MLB – MLB shift limits raising batter spirits and averages so far Major League Baseball’s new limits on infield shifts are raising batter spirits this spring. They might be bosltering batting averages, too. Batting averages across the league are up slightly from last spring training, from .259 to .263. Left-handed hitters seem to be benefitting most, with their collected average up from .255 to .274. Sluggers like the New York Yankees’ Anthony Rizzo are enjoying taking at-bats without a wall of defenders in shallow right field. Rizzo says that “young left-handed hitters will be introduced to the 3-4 hole that's been gone for about seven to eight years.” NFL – Ex-Raider Derek Carr agrees to 4-year contract with Saints The New Orleans Saints say former Raiders quarterback Derek Carr has agreed to a four-year contract. A person familiar with the situation said the deal could be worth up to $150 million. The person spoke to The Associated Press about the contract's value on condition of anonymity because financial terms were not released. Carr turns 32 this month. He played nine seasons for the Raiders and holds team records for yards and touchdowns passing. Saints coach Dennis Allen was the Raiders' coach when the team selected Carr in the second round of the 2014 draft. Las Vegas released Carr on Feb. 14 to avoid guaranteeing him $40.4 million of his contract over the next two years. NFL – Ex-Raider Ruggs’ felony DUI case stalled by fight over judge A Nevada judge will again be asked to decide which justice of the peace should handle a preliminary hearing in the case against former Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Henry Ruggs III, who is accused of killing a woman in drunken car crash in 2021. Las Vegas Justice of the Peace Harmony Letizia told Ruggs and his attorneys on Monday that she lacks the authority to decide whether she or another judge should preside over the hearing to decide if there is enough evidence to warrant that Ruggs stand trial on charges of reckless driving and driving under the influence causing death. Ruggs' attorneys said they will again take the issue to Clark County District Court. NFL – NFL reinstates Jaguars WR Ridley after gambling suspension The NFL reinstated suspended receiver Calvin Ridley and cleared the way for him to join his new team in Jacksonville. The league says Ridley is eligible to participate in all team activities beginning immediately. He had been suspended indefinitely since March 2022 for violating the NFL's gambling policy. He is expected to join the Jaguars for offseason workouts beginning April 17. Embiid made 11 of 16 field goals and all 19 free-throw attempts. Tyrese Maxey scored 24 points and Jalen McDaniels added 20 for the 76ers, who have won two straight. Tyrese Haliburton led the Pacers with 40 points and 16 assists. Neither team led by more than six points through the first three quarters. The Sixers finally took control with a late 10-0 run. Tonight Washington Wizards at Detroit Pistons, 7:00 p.m. NHL – National Hockey League Last Night Chicago Blackhawks 5, Ottawa Senators 0 Blackhawks 5, Senators 0 – Seth Jones scores twice as Blackhawks beat Senators 5-0 Seth Jones scored two of Chicago's three second-period goals, and the Blackhawks stopped Ottawa's five-game win streak with a 5-0 victory over the Senators. The Jaguars traded a fifth-round pick in 2023 and a conditional fourth-rounder in 2024 to get Ridley from Atlanta at the trading deadline in November. Countdown #378   This week, in a compact episode of the show, Paul and Wayne are pitching their podcast to the back of the theatre as they over-enunciate describing the top 10 scenery chewing performances.   This one is based on an idea from Nick Haskins of the Nikoli's Kitchen podcast, and the boys have a lot of fun trying to recapture just how over the top some of the performances they've chosen are. Both hosts have a go at an English accent on a couple of occasions (sorry), but regular listeners will be delighted to learn that Paul says "Joaquin" not once, not twice, but at least thrice in this episode.   Plus there's all the foul-language, Soundboard smashing and, as a bonus, Bryan Adams you could handle in one sub-hour podcast episode ... as The Countdown continues.   Check out the show's first draft of a website for your one-stop shop for all things related to The Countdown. Nick Haskins is a good dude. Do you know why?  Maybe it’s because you were a fan of his podcasting work… (Like, Epic Film Guys, perhaps…) or maybe it’s because you enjoy cooking with him on Twitch (At Nikoli’s Kitchen) If you listen to us enough, you have most definitely heard his name as the Grandmaster and creator of Livestream for the Cure – where podcasters gather around the ol’ internet fire and fight to help fund a world without cancer. With that said, we got him on the line with us and we talk about podcasting and running a multi-day event, and what such an event could evolve into.  It’s a really great time with a really great human. That said, it is the extra Tuesday of the month, so instead of doing a Free-For-All, we are going to replay last year’s Somethingcast episode during the event, where Rob and I concocted our own theme park amusement rides out of famous franchises.  And, guess what… one of them is actually happening! Featuring five-time award winning podcaster Nicholas Haskins..... and Tits McGee. Actually, it's me, Em, Tits McGee is on vacation. Joining me is the Ron Burgundy of podcasting. A man who has many leather bound books and whose apartment smells of rich mahogany, a man who can play jazz flute like no other - Nicholas Haskins of the podcast Nikoli's Kitchen. Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, if not a movie everyone's seen, is definitely a movie everyone has quoted. The lexicon of Anchorman still holds true, but not many people know that Ron Burgundy and Veronica Corningstone were loosely based on real news anchors: Mort Crim and Jessica Savitch. Savitch in particular was a trailblazer for women in news, starting as a diversity hire and becoming the station's first female reporter and one of the first women to anchor an evening network news broadcast. Sixty percent of the time, it's a movie that works every time, because while the zeitgeist surrounding the movie still holds up, the movie itself (especially in the light of modern sensibilities and the #MeToo Movement) really kinda doesn't. This is despite the fact it was a radical re-think behind scripted comedy, and really one of the first of the 2000s era improvised Judd Apatow bromantic comedies. Verbal Diorama, in German though, does actually mean "whale's vagina". Joining me to discuss Anchorman is Nick Haskins, host of the podcast https://nikoliskitchen.com/ (Nikoli's Kitchen) and creator of https://allmylinks.com/livestreamforthecure (Livestream for the Cure). ***SPOILER-FEST*** Avengers: Endgame Welcome to the first of many more Spoiler-Fest Bonus Episodes; Avengers: Endgame! Of course, we are pleased to welcome back, re: dragged back kicking, screaming and overall reluctantly, Paul, the really nice dude who needs a better podcast nickname than “That Movie Guy”, Combs! If that were not enticing enough, Paul somehow convinced his former co-host (and RL good friend) Joseph from Matty’s FAVORITE Indie movie review podcast EVER! C & C Geekcast to join in on this SPOILER-Fest Episode!! So total fan-boi moment right!!!??? True, but I also needed both Joseph and Paul’s assistance because, SPOILER ALERT: Matt has never seen an Avengers movie, and has maybe only seen 20 mins of some random Iron Man movie at some point…So, ya. The conversation turned out to be fascinating and I know all you super fans out there will love it, and honestly, even those who are a little muh on Superhero sheeeeeet, will very much enjoy the analysis Paul and Joseph provide, which of course is well anchored in the Profundity that is Mamoo. ***PS: Duh, this is a spoiler episode, look at the title, don’t think you were not forewarned!!***    Cheering Crowd, http://eliotlash.com/ Crickets Chirping, http://soundcloud.com/roocza :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Hear Paul, don’t call me Cosmo, Csomo from Varmints and Chris, don’t call me Paul, Osborne from Play Comics join Matty on May 17th at 3:00 for a 30 min roundtable music playlist-athon in support of the 3rd Annual Livestream for the Cure event in support of The Cancer Research Institute Big thanks go to Nick Haskins from Epic Film Guys and RestuRant podcasts who has once again organized this and has continued to add more features like; Merchandise! Welcome to Episode 19 of Nooks and Crannies! Concussed 80s Action Flicks, Feminist Teething, Confused Venezuelan Coups: What Was That Like?   Good to be back after the break week: Evan wrote an amazing paper and Matt got concussion number 28 on Good Friday! Suffice to say, the show notes are gonna be a little on the short side this episode. We kick things off with an intro where Matty reveals the two playlists he has been listening to with Violet during breakfast: Violet’s Teething Remix and Vi’s Feminist Indoctrination, vol. 1 Next up is Brian, Matt’s Chronic Illness Muse, King who turned the tables at the end of our chat and interviewed me about anthropology and medical anth. Always a treat to have a thoughtful individual ask you questions about a passion. Thanks buddy P-) After we lost Brian (his WiFi dropped randomly and we decided to just call it), we have another edition of the hottest segment in podcasting; “Podcast Recommendation Section, w/Nooks and Crannies”, on this edition we hear about Matt’s new favorite show: What Was That Like, hosted by perhaps the most perfectist interviewer in the game Scott Johnson. Just hit subscribe and take a peek at the episode titles, that’s all it took for Evan and I to get hooked. ***Trigger Warning: Episode 22 of What was that Like, it gets pretty rough. I would recommend proceeding with trepidation. It was one where part of it I wish I could have unheard.*** It is also one of the most harrowing accounts ever... Anywho..Let's Lighten the mood a bit with Paul, the movie podcast guy who still needs a better podcasting nickname than this, Combs and Matty dorking out over 1980’s era Action Flicks!!! Don’t worry, somewhere in here I managed to wedge in Over the Top and Space Jam, but that also might have been last episode or on the next one, folks, what I am trying to say here is I got a concussion okay??!?! Jeeze Okay back to the heavy, Matt gives you all a full account of his 28th concussion and how he somehow managed to pull off, with the able and supportive helpy of melly, his first ever full on Turkey Dinner! Do not know how I did it, cuz I barely remember Monday, or Sunday or … Talk to you all soon. Oh wait, there is more! Next segment is a new one, tentatively called: What Just Happened, a political and current events segment that Evan came up with that, honestly folks, its just a convenient way for yours truly to stay up to date on politics! Running a successful membership site in real life, with Jonathan Williamson

WordPress | Post Status Draft Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 12, 2015 76:40

Jonathan Williamson is the co-founder and COO of CGCookie, a membership website that provides as an educational resource for computer graphics and modeling. CGCookie has been around since 2008, and today is a network of five websites, has thousands of paying members, a team of six full time employees plus a number of contractors. CGCookie is built completely on WordPress and has a built in membership component. Some astute readers may recognize both the site and Jonathan's name; Jonathan is Pippin Williamson's identical twin brother, and Pippin has worked with Jonathan on CGCookie many times. So, in this interview, you're not listening to me talk to Pippin -- though it sounds like it -- but I'm talking to Jonathan Williamson. Jonathan is as passionate about CG, modeling, 3D printing, and the software that surrounds these disciplines as Pippin is about WordPress and programming. It was a pleasure to talk to Jonathan about what it's like to run a membership site that runs on WordPress. I think this interview will be beneficial for those that want to run a membership site, and also those that work with clients who make their living off of their website. How CGCookie evolved CGCookie started as a blog with news, tutorials, and resources for CG enthusiasts. The first form of its monetization was by selling the source files for the various tutorials. Within about two years, Jonathan and co-founder Wes Burke decided to add a membership component that ended up working far better than they anticipated. Jonathan has been working full-time on CGCookie since around the summer of 2009. They originally launched on aMember, before eventually migrating to Pippin's Restrict Content Pro plugin, along with Easy Digital Downloads. Today, CGCookie has more than 120,000 free users, and they have around 4,700 paid members. Since 2008, CGCookie have managed to not have a full time web developer until February of 2014, when they hired Nick Haskins. You may recognize Nick as the founder of Aesop Stories as well. Nick manages front-end development for the site, and they still don't have a backend developer -- though a backend developer and designer are on their roadmap. How CGCookie's eCommerce setup runs Considering Jonathan is using his brother's own plugins in the real world, it makes for a great avenue for feedback and insight for Pippin to improve those products. CGCookie is using Restrict Content Pro for memberships themselves, and EDD for their store. We talked about whether EDD could be used for both, or if there is room for improvement in the marriage between the two systems, and he believes there is and that it's a goal for the two plugins. For instance, currently, reporting and user management and a number of other features are independent between each plugin even though often times the users that utilize the system may overlap. I asked Jonathan about scaling WordPress and eCommerce for their large user base. He says that scaling for eCommerce has not been difficult, but with over a hundred thousand users, some default WordPress functionality has not scaled well; for instance, some admin areas create dropdowns for all users, which does not work well. Fortunately, there are some trac tickets in place currently to help solve some of these problems. Prioritizing goals for a membership site When discussing challenges running a membership site, Jonathan highlights the internal battles: balancing new features versus iterative improvements. Based on my short experience managing this membership site, I completely agree. For an example, Jonathan told me about a potential question and answer system to help his members get answers for specific technical topics that may be beyond the scope of a specific course. They believe a Stack Exchange style setup that allows them to refer their courses to specific questions would allow them to better serve their customers with the same content they already have. How do you get people to find your content that answers their question, but you don't have a way of just explicitly saying that these are the questions this course answers? They're considering a method of post to post relationships that direct courses as question answers and vice versa. For this feature and others, they try to do things with a short return on investment, but they also don't want to be a slave to it. They sometimes do things "that are important to the quality of CGCookie, that never make a dime." They removed ads last year under that very premise, to make CGCookie a better learning experience. Not the only place to learn Jonathan knows CGCookie isn't the only place to learn, so they focus on creating an excellent community and learning experience for their customers. Realizing that our sites aren't the only way to get certain information is an important thing to know to be able to better focus what we create for our users and why we create it. Pricing for CGCookie CGCookie has pricing for monthly, quarterly, or yearly pricing; all plans renew automatically unless explicitly cancelled. This is a feature they actively A/B test to see what's working and what's not. Behavior of customers varies between the three levels. Jonathan says that the users are more invested in their purchases (and getting more out of it) when they sign up for longer. Quarterly members have 10% longer lifetime memberships and spend three times longer on the site. However, they do have "a fair bit" of what I called "download and dash" members that sign up for a month, download a bunch of assets and cancel. Monthly memberships are also the most popular plan. They've considered locking down downloads for monthly signups but it's not something they want to do unless it becomes a bigger problem; however they do lose money on those customers that download gigabytes of files and videos but only stay subscribed for one month. Testing During A/B tests, they have found that people will be just as likely to sign up for quarterly as monthly if monthly isn't available, and quarterly members are more engaged. One thing they noted is that once people stick around for a few months, the average tenure of a user skyrockets; they have some users that have been a paying member as long as the site has been running. One of my big takeaways talking to Jonathan was about how significant testing can be. Their tests help them decide on the optimal pricing and payment plans to maximize a lifetime value. For testing, insights, and statistics they use both Optimizely, Mixpanel, and Google Analytics. Mixpanel allows you to create custom events in your software, and does require some code knowledge, but it can deliver valuable insights if you use it correctly. Jonathan notes, "It's basically as comprehensive as you make it." They can also mesh tools. They can track which A/B test from Optimizely a customer signed up with, and then use Mixpanel to track what they did and how they did it. They can get login metrics, renewal numbers, and more for each plan and signup flow. Mixpanel requires PHP and JavaScript knowledge to utilize, but Optimizely has an extensive visual interface that doesn't require code knowledge to utilize. What encourages membership signups "It varies day to day, week to week, month to month," in regard to how their signups work. A bad month in the economy can make their signups go down. Sometimes quarterly users will spike while monthly users are steady. Their biggest thing that affects signup rates is customer support. Some presale, but also support for new members to help answer questions and get people engaged. [pullquote align="right"]When they can help someone answer the question, "Where do I go next?", they are able to keep them for a long time.[/pullquote] They have one or two courses that drive a ton of traffic to their site, and it is therefore their largest onboarding channel for new members. However, they don't have a silver bullet for what it takes to get new users. They are always trying new things. On competing and the industry Jonathan doesn't see themselves as a part of a singular industry. While many think of CG as a part of the film industry, it's one of dozens of potential applications, and they don't want to narrow themselves to a particular one. They also poll users to get a feel for who they are and what industry actual users come from. Based on around a thousand responses, they had no real pattern at all. The results were all over the board. So they don't want to compete with a film tutorials site or any other industry site. They want to focus on the tool itself. They want to teach people how to use Blender and show them how it can be applied to various industries their users are a part of. Advice for those running membership sites "Build your community would be the main one. It's one thing to offer a really good product. It's one thing to build a really good website. But if you don't have the community behind you that's going to be willing to trust in you with their wallet ... it's not going to go anywhere long term, sustainably." Jonathan says it's about building the community as well as the sense of trust within that community. He believes that customers will want to know that not only the content will be worth it, but that it will continue to be worth it -- and that the communication and support from the team behind the site will be consistent as well. He believes that subscriptions and products are very different. With a subscription, the interaction is just as or far more important than specific content itself. When he refers to community, he doesn't mean it has to be strictly through something like a forum. He considers it a broad term, and for them it evolved out of their Blender community user base. At the time we recorded this, they didn't have forums, a dedicated chat system, or an actual community integration part. But the community exists and thrives within comments and their gallery functionality. Wrapping up Jonathan is full of great advice and I could listen to him talk about membership sites for a long time. I have no experience with CG but at the end of this interview he had me wanted to go build something with Blender. You can (and should) keep up with Jonathan on Twitter, or perhaps you'll see him at a conference near you -- but you'll probably think it's Pippin at first. Also be sure to checkout CGCookie's website; it's really great.
