We Want To Hear From You - Click Here To Leave Us Fan Mail!Hello, hockey skaters and goalies around the world! Welcome back to another edition of The Ride to the Rink. This is Lee Elias with you today, and we have a special guest from the Vegas Golden Knights, Sheri Hudspeth. Sheri is the Director of Development for Youth Hockey and Fan Engagement, and she joins us to discuss the importance and benefits of ball hockey.Sheri emphasizes that ball hockey is a fantastic way for ice hockey players to improve their skills at home. It's also a great social activity, perfect for making friends and building community. For kids who enjoy hockey but aren't great skaters, ball hockey provides a wonderful alternative to still enjoy the game. Plus, it's excellent exercise!Quotes:•“Ball hockey is a great way to work on your skills at home. You can work on stick handling, shooting, and passing, which will all translate to the ice.” - Sheri Hudspeth•“It's a very low cost to get into the game. All you need are some shoes, a stick, a ball, and maybe a net. Just some gym clothes, and you can start playing right away.” - Sheri Hudspeth•“Ball hockey is a great way to make friends, especially if you live in a neighborhood with a lot of kids. You can get a game going in the street, park, or gym.” - Sheri HudspethWe want to give a huge thanks to Sheri for taking part in this week's Ride to the Rink. Zdeno Chara has inked another one-year extension with the Bruins.  We discuss the benefits of having one of the best defensemen in the NHL back for another year. Tampa Bay and Boston have the two best points records this season.  Is this a product of how much better they are than the rest of the league or is the rest of the league just average or worse?  As we discuss, it becomes clear that we disagree on which is the correct choice, but they aren’t the only two choices.  We would love to hear what you think. Toronto is no stranger to controversy when it comes to their hockey team, and Mike Babcock may have inadvertently brought up another touchy subject when he discussed the depth of his team with the media.  Of course this led the media to write that there may be a rift between Babcock and Dubas. Chris feels that this is much ado about nothing but there could be something behind the scenes.  Where do you land? There is a street hockey game that takes place on Chestnut Street in Salem, MA every year.  The story is that this game has taken place for over 40 years!  The participants travel from over an hour away, the ages range from the early 20s to mid 60s, and the whole community gets behind it.  A feel-good story to be sure and one that puts the love of hockey on display for all to see. At this point we delve into our main topic…the Jack Adams award for best coach in the NHL.  As Mike and Chris have known each other for a number of years, their lists are almost identical.  The one difference is between Barry Trotz and Bill Peters.  This is also the topic of our Twitter poll this week, so we would love to hear your thoughts on who should get the award. Finally, in our new segment, we talk about who will retire first.  This week’s subjects, two players from the vaunted 2003 draft, Marc Andre Fleury and Corey Perry.  Here Mike and Chris agree as to who it will be.  To find out which player, you’ll have to listen and let us know your feelings. Short and to the point, but no less enjoyable.  Give us a listen and enjoy the show!

Over Coffee® | Stories and Resources from the Intersection of Art and Science | Exploring How to Make STEAM Work For You

Jason Cooper (right) with fellow Anaheim Ducks Fan Development Marketing Manager Molly Schaus and Fan Development Marketing Coordinator Gabriel Alamillo at S.C.O.R.E.'s exhibit during the 2018 California STEAM Symposium. What if...students could relate science, technology, engineering and math to a sport they enjoyed? And what if the arts were an essential component of all of the above? That's entirely possible, with the Anaheim Ducks Hockey Club's S.C.O.R.E. Program. Shortly after we met at the 2018 California STEAM Symposium, Anaheim Ducks Manager of Fan Development Marketing Jason Cooper talked with us about this unique curriculum. S.C.O.R.E. is an acronym for Scholastic Curriculum of Recreation and Education.   Since 2005, the S.C.O.R.E. Program has been offering Southern California students the opportunity to learn how various concepts apply to the sport of hockey. With their "Reading is the Goal" program, Ducks players visit local schools and get students started reading for thirty days.  "Reading is the Goal" emphasizes the ways in which reading is the foundation for success. Meanwhile, S.C.O.R.E.'s physical-education programs include a ten-day "Street Hockey" curriculum for elementary students.  There's also the "Captain's Challenge", in which fifth-graders learn leadership skills through a healthy lifestyle. Physics (behind the ways players move on the ice), creative design on the masks, and technology, such as 3D printing, are all among the topics students can learn through the S.C.O.R.E. program. 3D printing?  Absolutely--this year's First Flight Field Trip theme is, "Build a Better Puck"! Honors and hosting The program has garnered numerous honors, including two Celebrate Literacy Awards from the California Reading Association.  In 2010, the Orange County Department of Education recognized S.C.O.R.E. with an Outstanding Contribution to Education award.   More recently,  ESPN named the Anaheim Ducks as a finalist for their "Sports Humanitarian Team of the Year". And every year, the Anaheim Ducks host a S.C.O.R.E. field trip! The "First Flight Field Trip" welcomes more than 16,000 students and their teachers for an interactive day of STEAM learning.    Hands-on exhibits, workbook activities and lessons from Ducks players and coaches are all part of the day.   To say that this is a very popular field trip would be an understatement.   The 2019 edition is full, with a waiting list. However, the Ducks are already planning their 2020 edition, and Jason says, if you contact them, they can let you know when to sign up! Jason talked about the origins of the S.C.O.R.E. curriculum, what's involved in some of its programs and what to expect, if you're an educator or student attending the 2020 "First Flight Field Trip". On this edition of Over Coffee®, you will hear: How 2004 circumstances led to the creation of the S.C.O.R.E. program; How Jason, who is an educator, first became involved in S.C.O.R.E.; The strong point that gave the program credibility with the local schools from the outset; What Jason's journey was like, as an innovator, that led him to "fall in love with teaching" and work in his present capacity; What's involved in the "Captain's Challenge" program, which Jason authored; How the "Captain's Challenge"--and other S.C.O.R.E. programs--can include all students, even those who consider themselves "nonathletic"; How the program uses hockey to teach both physics and math; Why the ice on which the Ducks skate is not very different from the ice cream you might make in your freezer!; How the program interests students focused on the arts; The challenge with which students will work, on this year's "First Flight Field Trip"; Ahead-of-time resources available to students (and teachers); Some of the previous designs students created, in a similar challenge: What worked?  What didn't?
