On this week's Episode of Grease the Wheels, Uncle Jimmy takes a look at some of the real world ramifications of Texas discontinuing their state vehicle safety inspections. The first thing that stood out to us was that it was in fact similar to those in New York, and in fact throughout most of the Rust Belt where we know they are a really good idea. Entropy is the name of the game here, and if something is too rotten to be safe, or tires are too bald to provide adequate traction — they need to go. We also get into some of the socioeconomics of the state safety inspection, and how this has altered our own perceptions of this subject over time. When we we're young and broke, we hated it! When we had seen some stuff and learned some stuff, we we're a lot more understanding of why they are important. Bottom line, relying on the common sense of vehicle owners is, really without a doubt, one of the worst parameters we have ever seen. We have seen the “common sense” of vehicle owners and it usually ends up on “Just Rolled In” Also Uncle Jimmy talks his favorite ways of evading(and altering) police attention while having an out of date inspections!
To kick off a new series on the history of American comedy films, Alex and Jonathan travel back to the early days of cinema and look at the physical comedy of the early film clowns in Safety Last! (1923), City Lights (1931), and Duck Soup (1933). We discuss the transition from live performances in theater and vaudeville to the movies, how Harold Lloyd and Charlie Chaplin helped to incorporate character development into comedy films, and how the Marx brothers blended physical and verbal comedy which set the stage for the new era of sound comedy. In this edition of the Colts Blue Zone Podcast, Dave Griffiths, Mike Chappell and Matt Adams look ahead at the team's first preseason game, discuss a significant injury concern and break down the "unofficial depth chart."The show starts on a decidedly downbeat note, as second-year receiver Josh Downs suffers an ankle injury during 7-on-7 work at camp after a tackle from safety Nick Cross. How long could he be out? We'll explore the impact on the offense and the wide receiver room.Conversely, what does the tackle mean for Cross and the safety position (14:25)? Why haven't the Colts done more to shore up an obvious need (20:08)?Plus: we break down the "unofficial" depth chart ahead of Indy's first preseason game (27:05), share a few stories from Dwight Freeney's Hall of Fame induction (31:04), debate Adam Vinatieri's case for Canton (36:35) and wonder how only one Colts player landed on the NLF's Top 100 list (43:40).
The awards season is almost over - we've got a few days until the Academy Awards, and another day or so after until the nominations for the real awards, the Deucies Until then, it's time to talk about the films that have been viewed, seen, watched, absorbed and enjoyed in the last month or so... and on the heels of the biggest movies the year -- Dune 2 -- its time to talk about it! First up, a few birthday movies - what did come out in March in 2019, 2014, 1994, 1979 and so on... including the first mention of "Wing Commander" in what is likely a very long time. Then, we dive right in, showcasing classic movies like "Safety Last" and "Gimme Shelter" and Oscar bait, like "Maestro" and "Strays" and fresh on the screen, like "Spaceman" and yes, the full review of the crapfests known as "Argylle" and "Madame Web". Plus, Rachel McAdams in a period piece... Dr Earl enjoying the Barb... why Michael hates "May December" so much... and could Carey Mulligan make every single thing she's in just that much better? And finally, the long lost return of Assigned Films, introducing the "Time Bandits" rule. The Supreme Court repelled the attempt by some states to exclude Donald Trump from the ballot in November, so we are going to sift through some salty goodness from reddit and elsewhere. Then I am going to take a few minutes to read a great Substack article ( https://barsoom.substack.com/p/safety-last ) about the effect that "Safety First" has had on our civilization. We'll talk about what you think are good modern safety considerations (if any), and talk about the most dangerous games/activities you played growing up. The boys are going to the beginning of the project timeline for this week's episode as they tackle a pair of movies from 100 years ago in 1923. First, Jake Ziegler assigns Brad Garoon the Ten Commandments, but not the version of the movie you're thinking of. Though this one is also directed by Cecil B. DeMille, it was a silent film. The fellas discuss what feels like a bait and switch, as the biblical story of Moses only takes up the first 45 minutes of this 2.5-hour film. The rest is made up of Christian moralizing and a cheesy plot. They discuss how the movie compares to DeMille's remake, the Dreamworks animated retelling of the story, and Ridley Scott's modern take. Jake assigns Brad Safety Last, Harold Lloyd's iconic comedy about a poor schmuck trying to make it big in the city. They talk about Lloyd's place in the silent movie comedy pantheon alongside Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton, and how comedy like this transcends time. Jake also has a meltdown over John Turturro's religious heritage. Other movies discussed in this episode: The Ten Commandments (1956), The Prince of Egypt (1998), Alexander (2004), Kingdom of Heaven (2005), Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1 (2010), Exodus: Gods and Kings (2014), Killers of the Flower Moon (2023), Napoleon (2023).

Harold Lloyd dangling from the hands of a clock on the side of a building is arguably the most famous single image from the silent-film era. The movie in which that scene appears, Safety Last, was made in 1923 and is being screened Sunday at 2pm at the Academy Museum, with a 27-piece orchestra playing the late Carl Davis's original score. Leonard and Jessie are delighted to welcome back Suzanne Lloyd, who was raised by her grandfather and grandmother, and her longtime friend Rich Correll, who as a teenager began the process of preserving Harold Lloyd's film collection. We owe them both a debt of thanks for keeping these movies safe for current and future generations to enjoy.

We haven't reviewed that many silent movies in our previous 516 episodes, but #517 gets into Harold Lloyd's business. There are reasons the sometimes-overlooked silent comedian doesn't have the legacy that Chaplin and Keaton do, even though he should be just as well-remembered. He had the charm of the Tramp and he performed dangerous stunts the way Keaton did. Directors Newmeyer and Taylor's 100-year-old flick is fun and it has a great pace. Their Safety Last is also the rare comedy that's also a thriller and ALSO tells a good story. And then we get the climax, with that incredible extended sequence where Lloyd climbs a building despite encountering many pitfalls. So spend more money than you can afford on your loved one and take crazy chances to earn a big stack of cash as we talk about a non-talkie in Safety Last. “I was not destined to be a writer,” said author Annette Lloyd. She discovered the work of silent film star Harold Lloyd at age 17 and has since written about her “hero” in a multitude of books, including ‘Harold Lloyd - Magic in a Pair of Horn-Rimmed Glasses.' Part of the description reads, “From birth to death, Harold grew and evolved because of the things that were happening around him, and he was always aware of the importance of those events, the turning points that fashioned the magic: the coin toss that got him to California; meeting a fellow extra at Universal by the name of Hal Roach; creating his revolutionary Glasses Character; a death-defying bomb accident; not allowing his films to be aired on early television; [and] winning his Oscar.” In this interview, Annette talks about working with James Robert Parish, writing about subjects that consume you, how false truths become published facts (and how to correct this), the backstory behind the Safety Last! stunt, and how being a historian is like being an archeologist. Sue Lloyd was raised by her grandfather, the legendary silent-screen comedian Harold Lloyd—the guy in horned-rim glasses and a straw hat who dangled off a clock on the side of a building in his hit comedy Safety Last. (Her grandmother had been his leading lady on screen.) He introduced her and her friends to his film vault and paved the way for them to protect his movies, which she makes available today at festivals, online, and on home video. Sue has wonderful memories of her privileged upbringing and the people she met along the way. She has even published books of her grandfather's famous 3-D photography. Known for it's iconic images of Harold Lloyd hanging from a clock several stories above the ground, we dissect how this man – Harold Lloyd the character – got himself into this mess. But it's pretty clear this may be a parable how lying only brings trouble – unless you are superhumanly skilled at pratfalls and climbing. It's a thrilling watch for sure! Episode Notes This week, we discuss Joel and Ethan Cohen's first film, Blood Simple. A cuckolded bar owner pays a sweaty PI to off his wife and her lover and then goes fishing. Nothing goes smoothly from there and everyone you think is dead probably isn't – until they are. Country noir brings us multiple twists and turns and some beautiful images from clearly promising film makers. It's a classic of the silent cinema! The one where the guy dangles off the clock. A film that still works to this day. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

One of the most well-known (dare we say famous!) silent films of all time due to a man dangling from the arm of a clock, Safety Last! anchored Harold Lloyd among the comedic greats of the moving pictures era. Lloyd plays a small-town "Boy" trying to make it in the big city, who finds employment as a department-store clerk. He comes up with a wild publicity stunt to draw attention to the store after his roommate's successful climb of escape from a cop, resulting in the incredible feat of a death-defying stunt! Laugh-out-loud funny and jaw-dropping in equal measure, Safety Last! is a movie experience you won't soon forget. Lily's film watch: Greta (2019), Dir. Sparkman Clark. Found on Amazon Prime. Adam's film watch: Greed (1924), Dir. Erich von Stroheim, and Die Nibelungen (1924), Dir. Fritz Lang. A silent fantasy film! Subscribe to Harold Lloyd on YouTube! The estate has been releasing his filmography, so why not see something of his that you haven't yet?! https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4A3IJ4FssK3b7SeXc2kMMw/featured HOW they filmed Safety Last! https://silentlocations.com/2012/02/29/how-harold-lloyd-filmed-safety-last/?fbclid=IwAR1xDxAzkmtQk2wNRZPckRqEw3q3EesSQ_l3OZ5gCqodxeddMeoz7udFYhQ We want to thank Adam so much for joining us on this podcasting journey! The Criterion Collection, the last vestige of truly collectible DVD and Blu-Ray movies in existence. These are well produced, fancy pants editions of important and interesting films for the discerning film lover. We continue our journey through Jim's collection of movies with... Safety Last Spine Number: 662 Director: Fred C. Newmeyer and Sam Taylor Genre: Comedy The history of film is littered with iconic images, as one would imagine. I mean, it's an industry of visual artists, so you are bound to get some pictures that stand out. Rocky on the top of the steps, E.T. flying across the moon, Simba being held up to introduce him to the pride, Gene Kelly spinning on a lamppost during a downpour all bring to mind these amazing movies and incredible scenes. But are there any images that are iconic and recognizable, but that people, by and large, don't know the film that spawned them? Yes, there are. This week, we address one such case. Harold Lloyd, often referred to as silent comedy's "third genuis," alongside Keaton and Chaplin, made "Safety Last," in 1923 and, even if you don't know the movie, you know the image. Lloyd was unrealistically successful in his day. His movies were immensely popular, and he was insanely rich. How rich? His home, Greenacers, cost two million dollars. In the 20's. Adjusted for inflation, that's over $200,000,000. When he died, the 16 acers it was located on were broken down into 14 large lots for other mansions. That's right, his home had enough land for 16 other massive homes. Oh, and when he wasn't making movies, he was one of the founders of The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. You know, the people who give out the Oscars. So, while Keaton and Chaplin might be more immediately recognizable, Lloyd holds the title as the most successful. Unless on of those guys started an organization that gives out an award that redefines a person's career, and we just don't know about it. So, why was he not as well known? Well, because unlike Keaton and Chaplin he was able to maintain ownership of his films. So, while the other two saw their work reproduced over and over again, some lapsing into public domain, the rest just being treated as another property owned by companies that just churn stuff out, Lloyd had complete control over his releases. Ever single one was an official release. So, while the other guys saw their films treated as properties, Lloyd's work was carefully preserved and curated. Why is that important? Firstly because it allowed for these films to be immacuately maintained. The prints are STUNNING. Second, it made his work more of an insider thing. If you weren't a film fan to begin with, you were probably completely unaware of his work. This brings us to Safety Last. Honestly, this is one of the funniest and most thrilling movies ever made. It's a simple story about a boy trying to impress a girl, but man... the gags and stunts are so outstanding that it elevates the entire thing to a different level. So, check out this classic piece of American cinema, then sit back and listen to us. Honestly, it's a great way to spend your day. Next week, Spine number 666: The Devil's Backbone Also, check this out. The Life Masters is now it's own show with its own site and own dedicated feed.
