Most Excellent 80s Movies Podcast

Groundbreaking Digital Frontier or 80s Tech Fantasy?Join hosts Krissy Lenz and Nathan Blackwell with special guest Joe Malone as they venture into the neon-lit digital world of Tron (1982). This revolutionary sci-fi adventure follows computer programmer Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) as he's transported inside a computer system where he must battle alongside Tron against the tyrannical Master Control Program. The hosts dive deep into what makes this film a landmark in cinema history—it was the first major film to use extensive computer-generated imagery, so groundbreaking that the Academy disqualified it from special effects nominations because they considered using computers "cheating." Despite its commercial underperformance, the film's arcade games became massive hits, showcasing its cultural impact.Joe shares his fascinating journey with the film, initially creating a list titled "Why I Hate It" after his first viewing, only to create a contrasting "Why I Actually Really Like It" list after his second watch. The hosts agree that while the narrative sometimes falls flat and the graphics appear dated by today's standards, the film deserves recognition for pioneering digital filmmaking and presciently exploring AI concerns that remain relevant today.Nathan, a childhood fan, rates it 7.5/10 "frisbees," while newfound Tron defender Joe gives it 7.6, and Krissy lands at 6.5, noting that even her cat refused to watch it with her.Key topics discussed:Jeff Bridges' performance and undeniable charmThe revolutionary computer graphics and special effectsThe film's religious undertones with users portrayed as godlike beingsThe iconic Light Cycle sequencesSimilarities to Star Wars' narrative structureConnections to modern concerns about artificial intelligenceThe unusual costume designs and world-buildingThe surprising romantic "threpple" dynamics between charactersThe episode concludes with movie recommendations including Blade Runner (1982), WarGames (1983), and Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004) as companions to Tron. Whether you're a devoted fan or new to this digital frontier, this episode illuminates why Tron remains a fascinating artifact of early digital filmmaking and 80s sci-fi imagination. --We couldn't do this without your support of The Most Excellent 80s Movies Podcast! What's up, dudes? Did you know there are Christmas references in “Tron,” one of the most ‘80s things ever? Funny or Die even did a promo for a faux holiday special! I've got Scott Leopold from Holly Jolly X'masu and Robert Nicholas from Behind the Bells to talk about this 1982 cult classic!Arcade owner and programmer Kevin Flynn is a former employee of the software corporation ENCOM. Flynn has been trying to hack into ENCOM's mainframe computer to find evidence that ENCOM's senior executive Ed Dillinger stole five video games he created. Unfortunately, Dillinger's supercomputer Master Control Program constantly foils Flynn's efforts and dictates and controls most of the computer systems. One night, Flynn's former girlfriend Lora Baines and ace computer programmer Alan Bradley help Flynn break into ENCOM to shut down the MCP with Alan's security program Tron. While at Lora's ENCOM work station, the MCP uses Lora's matter transmission laser on Flynn. It digitizes him and transports him into the computer. Flynn finds himself in an electronic world ruled by the MCP and his evil chief henchman Sark. There low-level computer programs are the alter egos of their creators and are forced to compete in gladiatorial games. Flynn, as a User, is capable of fantastic feats within the computer world. With help from Tron, a heroic and fearless security program and his lover, Yori, Flynn sets out destroy the MCP and help Tron liberate the system from the MCP's control. Destroying the MCP is Flynn's only way of returning to the real world. Oh, and let's not forget Don Deluise, Burt Reynolds, and Santa! Coming up on the Men at the Movies podcast, we talk about the 1982 movie Tron. We see how the relationship between the programs and the users is a reflection of the relationship between ourselves and our creator. The MCP becomes a distortion of who he was created to be by his search for knowledge and power. But when we have a relationship with our creator, and do the things we were designed to do, we experience a joy even in doing hard things. Join us as we discover God's truth in this movie. Questions In Tron, we see that programs rely on users for their existence. How does this parallel our dependence on a Creator for our existence and purpose? Discuss the concept of free will in Tron. How does it relate to the idea that God has given us the freedom to make choices in our lives? In the movie, programs are created by users and subsequently develop relationships, loyalty, and even rebellion towards their creators. How can this be seen as a reflection of our own complex relationship with God? The storyline in Tron explores themes of oppression and liberation, where the programs revolt against their oppressive Master Control Program. How does this parallel our own struggle with sin in rebellion to God? The underlying message in Tron encourages the notion that the programs hold significance beyond the virtual realm and deserve recognition and respect. How does this reflect our understanding of our own significance as creations of our Creator? Tron explores the idea of faith and trust between users and programs. How does this parallel our own need for faith and trust in our relationship with God, especially in times of uncertainty and adversity? How does Flynn's selflessness and sacrificial nature in "Tron" reflect Jesus Christ? How can we embody this in our own lives? Flynn represents hope and redemption within the virtual world. How does his unwavering belief in the good in others align with Jesus' teachings? How can we adopt this perspective? Flynn's humility and purpose mirror Jesus' humility, like when he washed his disciples' feet. We can learn from Flynn to cultivate humility and purpose in our own lives. Flynn's courage and determination in "Tron" echo Jesus' example of fearlessly opposing injustice. How can we draw inspiration from Flynn to stand up for what's right? Flynn's forgiveness towards betrayers reflects Jesus' teachings on reconciliation. How can we apply Flynn's forgiveness to our own relationships, extending grace to others? The ThawedCast: Conversations About Animation

The ThawedCast takes a journey back to 1982 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the release of 'TRON' from Walt Disney Pictures. Jodi, Alex, and Philip share their thoughts and varying degrees of enthusiasm for the film, which delivers a truly unique visual experience whose lack of direct imitators perhaps illustrates its mixed reception amongst moviegoers upon its release. Despite a poor box office performance relative to a sizable budget, 'TRON' would spawn multiple successful arcade and home console video games--an appropriate consolation for this video game-themed film. Perhaps the main reason for 'TRON''s uniqueness is its pioneering use of computer graphics. Primarily set inside a 1980s computer system, the rogue Master Control Program is on a quest for world domination and must be stopped by genius programmer Kevin Flynn and his colleagues. First they must free the security program, TRON, who holds the key to ward off the cancerous proliferation of the evil MCP. First of all, we'd like to thank the amazing yurricanes for working with us to create the featured image for this episode. I think you'll agree that it's an amazing piece of art, and you should definitely check out their work. We'd also like to thank Georgie (aka ChapSketch) for working with Squidge on the episode artwork for the entire New Cupboard of Shame series. Head on over to Georgie's Etsy page to commission some work from her. You really should, as she's blooming brilliant.Remember that you can always get in touch with us on our Discord server, Facebook page, on Twitter, or with our Contact page.Squidge invited Jay to make his first appearance on the Cupboard of Shame, and he brought along a white whale of sorts. What do Arnie, Sly Stallone, and trashy 80s cyberpunk movies have in common? And why is Jay recommending running, head first, into walls? This CoS will answer those questions and more. Here's a sample of the full show notes - make sure to click through and check them out.Content WarningSquidge was fully in charge of hosting, producing and editing this episode. As such, he decided to leave the few swears in the episode without bleeping them. This was done for comedy reasons, as we felt that there is very little in the episode which could offend most listeners. Please listen responsibly.Show NotesSquidge wanted to take a shiny new look at The Cupboard of Shame. The difference being that he wanted to invite some familiar voices onto the show, one at a time, and discuss one game that they want to jettison into the Cupboard of Shame. This being the fifth episode in the new series, he invited Andrew "Podcast Collector" Dickinson to dispatch something into the devious - and totally real cupboard - cupboard. As a quick reminder, Squidge describes The Cupboard of Shame as:The idea behind it is games that you have bought in your past, played it, but you don't know why you bought [them] but you did anyway.Any complaints that you have about the game; why you want to stick it in the Cupboard of Shame. We'll talk about the good points and the bad points [of the game], and we'll share some fun facts about the game.- SquidgePrevious Entries into the Cupboard of ShameThe Cupboard of Shame reboot has only seen two entries so far: Chief Problems decided that The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim needed to be stored behind the walnut doors of destiny in episode 136 Lulu wanted to jettison Chaos Legion to the nether realms of the electronically challenged cupboard in episode 138 Sean wanted to yeet Risk of Rain 2 into the underbelly of the cupboard in episode 139 Ginger wished to send Final Fantasy X-2 into the depths of cheap MDF that is the cupboard in episode 140 AndrewD was on the fence about Kane and Lynch 2: Dog Days and whether it should have been in the Cupboard of Shame, in episode 141 JonnyG spoke about the weird-a-thon that is Deadly Premonition is episode 142 Prior to the Cupboard of Shame reboot, Squidge had challenged both G and himself to put some titles into the Cupboard of Shame. The titles that they chose include: Iron Man the Movie Video Game WET Rambo: The Video Game Crackdown Final Fantasy XIII You can hear their discussion on these games (and a few more) in episode 47: The Cupboard of Shame - here's a link to that episode. All of the "classic" Cupboard of Shame episodes - aka before Squidge's 2022 sexy reboot - can be found here.Jay's Chosen GameAnd Squidge got directly into the topic of discussion: which game would you like to put into the Cupboard of Shame:It's actually three games, but the game that I want to throw into the Cupboard of Shame is called "Power Blade 2" on the NES. But I can't talk about Power Blade 2 without talking about Power Blade. And I can't talk about Power Blade without talking about Power Blazer- JayBut using Squidge's rules, it's not possible to throw more than one game in at once. So Jay had to pick just one game:Power Blade 2 is what I would like to nominate to be thrown into the Cupboard of Shame- JayOr for those tuning in from Japan - and there are more than a few of you, if our podcast hosting stats are to be believed - Jay is referring to "Captain Saver".But before he could talk about Power Blade 2, Jay needed to talk about Power Blade:So Power Blade is a game for the NES, right? In this game, you play totally-not-Arnold-Schwarzenegger who runs around in '80s style tank-top [attire] and everything. He doesn't use his fists, doesn't use guns. He uses a boomerang - which is vaguely daft as it is, right? And that's all you really need to know.... they took a game called Power Blazer which was released in Japan in around 1990-1991, which was a Mega Man clone... except that you used a boomerang. When the [locationsation] over to the UK and US happened, **EVERYTHING** about the game changed except for the boomerang and the music.- JaySquidge regaled us with both of the stories presented on Wikipedia, and on GameFAQs. First up, Wikipedia:After years of fighting that took millions of casualties, Earth is recovering from the revolts of the 22nd century. In 2192, New Earth has a master computer that holds a database of off colony planets. In the wrong hands, the database could prove fatal. One day aliens attack the master computer, making the Master Control Program malfunction.Nova, a lord of the ancient Power Blade, is summoned to take care of the situation. The Power Blade is a glowing energy boomerang that Nova uses to defend himself.- SquidgeAnd now, GameFAQS:22ND CENTURY WARRIOR. (in all caps, like you're shouting)When New Earth's master computer is attacked by aliens, only Nova, lord of the ancient Power Blade, can battle through the control centre and restore the database- SquidgeSquidge also wrote his own intro:On his way to head office to complain about tickets that he bought to see Cyborg One Direction, only to be shocked that they were genuine, Nova gets a new mission: to stop a Python implementation test gone wrong. It all started when machine learning picture creation tool [Dall-e] gained sentience and started forging passports. From there, it took to reading the stock market; and before you knew it, it took over sectors of production & commerce in {INSERT FUTURE CITY NAME HERE}.- SquidgeFull Show NotesMake sure to check out the full show notes for more discussion on the points we raise, some extra meta-analysis, and some links to related things.Have you ever played Power Blade 2? Tron-Sotyline: Hacker/arcade owner Kevin Flynn is digitally broken down into a data stream by a villainous software pirate known as Master Control and reconstituted into the internal, 3-D graphical world of computers. It is there, in the ultimate blazingly colorful, geometrically intense landscapes of cyberspace, that Flynn joins forces with Tron to outmaneuver the Master Control Program that holds them captive in the equivalent of a gigantic, infinitely challenging computer game. Terminator-Storyline: Sent back from a dystopian 2029--where the cold machines have conquered the entire world--to 1984 Los Angeles, the indestructible cyborg-assassin known as the "Terminator" commences his deadly mission to kill humankind's most important woman: the unsuspecting, Sarah Connor. However, from the same war-torn post-apocalyptic future comes a battle-scarred defender--Kyle Reese, a brave soldier of the human Resistance Army--bent on stopping the cybernetic killer from eliminating the world's last hope. But, the Terminator has no feelings, he doesn't sleep, and above all, he won't stop until he carries out his grim task. Does our future lie in our past? Star Trek The Motion Picture-Storyline: A massive alien spacecraft of enormous power destroys three powerful Klingon cruisers as it makes its way towards Federation space. Admiral James T. Kirk is ordered to take command of the USS Enterprise for the first time since her historic five-year mission. The Epsilon IX space station alerts the Federation, but they are also destroyed by the alien spacecraft. The only starship in range is the Enterprise, after undergoing a major overhaul in drydock orbiting Earth. Kirk rounds up the rest of his crew, and acquires some new members, and sets off to intercept the alien spacecraft. However, it has been three years since Kirk last went into deep space - is he up to the task of saving Earth? Artificial intelligence-Artificial intelligence is intelligence demonstrated by machines, unlike the natural intelligence displayed by humans and animals, which involves consciousness and emotionality. The distinction between the former and the latter categories is often revealed by the acronym chosen. However, Flynn is transported into the digital world, where he has to face off against Dillinger's computerized likeness, Sark, and the imposing Master Control Program. Aided by Tron (Bruce Boxleitner) and Yori (Cindy Morgan), Flynn becomes a freedom fighter for the oppressed programs of the grid.○ The film was disqualified from receiving an Academy Award nomination for special effects, because the Academy felt at the time that using computers was "cheating".○ To inspire the actors, arcade games were placed on the production sets and could be played during downtime. Jeff Bridges apparently was the most adept at the games and found it hard to tear himself away from a game to shoot a scene.○ Although the film was an initial failure, the arcade video games based on it proved to be a tremendous hit and actually out-grossed the film.○ Many Disney animators refused to work on this movie because they feared that computers would put them out of business. In fact, 22 years later Disney closed its hand-drawn animation studio in favor of CGI animation. Hand-drawn animation was ultimately resumed at Disney at the behest of new creative director John Lasseter, also head of Pixar- ironically a computer animation company.○ In the initial scenes with Flynn at the arcade, he is playing a game he invented called Space Paranoids. The game he is playing bears remarkable resemblance to 3-D graphics game engines, which would not be invented for ten more years.○ The state-of-the-art computer used for the film's key special effects had only 2MB of memory and 330MB of storage○ The programmers' cubicles at Encom were shot using the actual programmers' cubicles at The Walt Disney Company's Information Technology group. A matte painting was used to expand the area to a size more appropriate to a software company.○ The ENCOM laser bay was real. It was actually the target bay for the twenty-beam SHIVA solid-state laser facility at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. It was used for nuclear fusion research in the late seventies and early eighties, and was capable of delivering up to 28 trillion watts of power on target.○ All the live action that occurred inside the computer was filmed in black and white, and colorized later with photographic and rotoscopic techniques.○ HIDDEN MICKEY: At 1:12:26 in the "solar sailer" sequence, you'll see, for a brief moment, the silhouette of Mickey Mouse on the ground made to look like part of the terrain.● Segment: News/Announcements “The Newsies Banner”○ Disney + is available for Pre-Order $6.99/month $69.99/year○ New Frozen 2 Trailer!!○ Kevin Feige Developing a new Star Wars movie● Segment: This week in Disney history “Once Upon a Time”○ September 27th 1996 - Sabrina the Teenage Witch, a new sitcom based on the Archie Comics series of the same name, premieres on ABC-TV (which Disney acquired earlier in the year).● Segment: Top 4 Ranking “Let’s get down to business” ○ Oh my disney “Only a true Disney Princess fan can get 100% on this quiz”Tease Next Week: Enchanted Top 4: Disney Princes.

Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

Disney's "Tron" digitally dazzled the world as revolutionary work of art: the identity discs, the concept of a computerized world, and visuals that to this day haven't been replicated in their inventiveness and effort. But one thing sets movies apart from other optical art forms: The Story. And when you read Tron's narrative files, some border on corrupt. On this podcast, three grown men who worshipped Tron as boys revisit Flynn, Sark, Lora, Dumant, light bikes, solar sailers, the I/O Tower, and the Master Control Program. Big D brings his Tron toys out to play. Roger questions the sexual undercurrents of the film, and Gene gets just plain mad at the spaghetti bowl of a narrative Disney threw together. Find out how Tron's artists got those amazing glow effects, why Jeff Bridges was the only actor forced to wear a loin cloth, and how Roger manages to bring religion into even this childish technological tale. The proof is in the printout. Disney's first big foray into the realm of computer animation would prove to be a box office disappoiuntmen in 1982, but garner a legion of fans over the years for its revolutionary design work and the influence it still continue to have in science fiction today.  Jeff Bridges stars as Kevin Flynn, video game programmer, who is ripped off of several ideas by an unscrupulous power hungry man named Ed Dillinger. Dillinger soon starts a meteoric rise to the top of a powerful global corporation, Encom, while the computer that runs it has become so powerful that it is a life-force unto itself, thinking and talking (not to mention plotting world domination). Flynn tries to hack into the computer to get evidence of Dillinger’s theft, when the Master Control Program sucks Flynn into its own cyber-world, dubbed “the grid”,  where programs in the voice and form of the programmers that created them are mere toys by which Master Control Program uses for its own enjoyment. Bruce Boxleitner, Cindy Morgan and David Warner also star in this film by Steven Lisberger.

Tysto film commentaries

Join the Doctor and me in the far-flung future of 1979, where we watch Caligula doggedly track down the Master Control Program and make sweet, sweet love to Doc Brown's wife. We compare English and American ideas of currency, gentlemen's clubs, health care systems, and free love. We compare the character of Wells to Sherlock Holmes and Kyle Reese. And we compare the film to the 1960 The Time Machine as well as to Air Wolf. We wonder why the time machine has an AM radio. But we fail to give Nicholas Meyer credit for sending his characters to the Chartered Bank of London and not to an imaginary "Bank of England." (Damn you, IMDb trivia page!)
