“Your thoughts do not define who you are,” our guest, Matt Tenney of The Mindfulness Edge, advises us.  What does that mean? Matt appealed to us as a guest because his agent communicated he had leadership lessons from a prison and a monastery.  That sounded intriguing.  Matt does have a four-step leadership system that can help many leaders. But it's what he learned in prison that I found most useful. Matt also explained how he starts every workday with 20-25 minutes of mindfulness, exercise, time with his family, and then blocks off his calendar until 11:00am.  Only urgent needs from clients get his morning time.  Makes you wonder…  What's Matt doing until 11am each workday?  Coffee and hot tubs? No. Matt sets aside every workday morning for “asset building.”  WOW!  Love it. What would happen if you did not look at email or answer texts/IM, etc. until 11am, and you invested that time into asset building? Listen to this podcast to learn more. Are you wondering what Matt shared about his time in prison?  You should.  It's powerful.  I can say so myself because I'm applying his Mindfulness Edge in my life.  (David) Listen to this podcast.  Good conversation.  Plus, two tips that can change your life. Today's guest is the Author of two books, “Serve to Be Great” and “The Mindfulness Edge”. Matt Tenney is the CEO of The Generous Group. Matt has been helping develop leaders with lasting impacts for 10 years and has worked with some very large organizations. Matt joins the host Molly McGrath to share some of his tips on how actually to produce lasting impacts for leadership training.    Takeaways: When investing in leadership training, there is a follow-up process to making that you are turning information into behaviors that are repeatable and stick. New information is fairly worthless if it doesn't end up translating into new behaviors. At that point, it has just been a waste of time.  You need to meet your leaders on their level and make sure that the training lines up with the goals that they are excited about. If you don't do that then the leaders won't bring the new ideas and information to the rest of the company.  Nobody wants to set up one on one meetings with team members every two weeks but it's important to set up the time and invest that time into solving problems rather than putting in the back end and spending more time hiring and firing employees.  We have been trained our entire lives to think that completing tasks and getting higher numbers is more important than building and maintaining effective relationships. However, this isn't how it should actually work Building in feedback from your employees is an invaluable tool for building relationships and for understanding where to improve any process at the office.  Consider looking at software that automates a survey that makes sure that you are meeting the needs of the employees in your office. This will help you understand if you are creating a successful environment in the office.    Quote of the Show: “If I'm a leader and you don't tell me how what the training you're putting me through relates to the goals that I'm excited for, then forget about it.”    Links: Twitter: https://twitter.com/MattTenney1?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/matttenney/ Website: https://www.matttenney.com/engagement-and-retention-help/ Book Link: https://www.amazon.com/Serve-Great-Leadership-Monastery-Boardroom/dp/1118868463 https://www.amazon.com/Mindfulness-Edge-Leadership-Personal-Excellence/dp/1119183189 Bootcamp Link: https://www.lawfirmadminbootcamp.com/   Ways to Tune In: Amazon Music - https://www.amazon.com/Hiring-and-Empowering-Solutions/dp/B08JJSLJ7N Apple Podcast - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/hiring-and-empowering-solutions/id1460184599 Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/3oIfsDDnEDDkcumTCygHDH Google Podcast - https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cDovL2ZlZWRzLmxpYnN5bi5jb20vMTc4MTM2L3Jzcw Stitcher - https://www.stitcher.com/show/hiring-and-empowering-solutions YouTube - https://youtu.be/ZoFIsaUJ7-I   Hire & Empower is produced by Ringmaster, on a mission to create connections through B2B podcasts. So while it may seem counterintuitive, when Christian leaders put employees before profits, they maximize profits! Sometimes Christ-like leadership seems the opposite of what we need to do to remain competitive, but when we follow God's ways, we always win. If you're an avid listener, you know this approach is true for Bobby, too - when he implemented core values, he saw revenue grow by 500% during a recession! Tune in to hear how making money is a by-product of a Christ-like organizational culture and core values.
