Disclaimer: Huge props to JCD who has recently signed his first ever pro contract with the Abra Weavers in the MPBL! Let's get it! This is a super unique story; one of hoop lineage from both mom and dad, of heartbreak and sadness at an early age, one of resilience, one of seeing the light and to keep on fighting. Jack grew up in a fun and active house, sharing space with not only his immediate family but his cousins as well. At an early age the inside or outside of the Cruz - Dumont house would be littered with sports and a bunch of battles! As he grew older Jack developed a real love for the game of hoops and football, eventually finding himself and his brothers at storied Vancouver College (Thanks to his dedicated mom who went back to school to earn her degree!!). In Jacks grade ten year football was really his main thing, however the sickness of his dad John impacted his grade 10/11 year and he had challenges with focusing and being committed as any teenager would! It was through this time watching his dad battle for his life that Jack found the inspiration and motivation to keep going, to fight and not give up. From there the switch happened and he lit the fire we see today. After a solid senior year at VC, he committed to UBC to play for the T-Birds. While there Jack was on pace to graduate early due to a covid year, and realized he could eventually turn himself into a pro. Wanting to get a feel for what that might look like, a trip out to the Philippines showed Jack something special and he decided to make the move, leaving UBC after 3 years of eligibility to play in the University league with the hope of signing a pro contract…..and here we are! This young bull has lots of hoops left in him, it was a great time connecting and we are excited to see Jack's future! Tap in! Boeing - Boeing said Monday that it will buy back its struggling fuselage maker Spirit AeroSystems in an all-stock deal that the plane maker has said will improve safety and quality control. - It said it agreed to pay $37.25 a share in Boeing stock for Spirit, giving the aerospace company an equity value of $4.7 billion. Including Spirit's debt the deal has a transaction value of $8.3 billion Boeing said. Very Reverend Michael Knipe is the pastor of Sts. Peter and Paul Parish in Tulsa and Judicial Vicar of the Diocese of Tulsa. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1988 and has served the diocese as pastor of several parishes and as chaplain at Bishop Kelley High School. Fr. Mike was educated at Northeastern State University (Tahlequah), received his Bachelor of Arts from Conception Seminary College (Missouri), his Master of Arts in Theology from the University of Dallas,, his STB in theology and JCL in Canon Law from The Catholic University of America (DC) and recently completed his JCD in Canon law from Universidad Pontificia de Salamanca (Spain). He is fluent in English and Spanish and is committed to the spread of the gospel and Catholic social teaching. He also loves traveling the world.

Visiting the New England campus for this week's Dedication of Our Mother of Perpetual Help Chapel, alumnus priest Rev. Nicholas Callaghan ('96), JCD, is a judge on the Metropolitan Tribunal, the Ecclesiastical Court of the Archdiocese of New York. Ordained in 2004, he earned his doctorate in canon law in Rome after serving as a parochial vicar at two New York parishes. On Tuesday, he offered the midday Mass in Our Mother of Perpetual Help Chapel. This is a recording of his homily.

In this episode Dayamati and I discuss Suzuki's essay 'The Myōkōnin' which is found in his Selected Works, Vol. 2. The myōkōnin is the saint of Shin Buddhism and in this essay Suzuki discusses two myōkōnin: first, Dōshū of Akao (d. 1516) and, second, Asahara Saichi (1850–1932). We discuss Dōshū's Twenty-One Resolutions. In particular Dōshū was concerned with the notion of ichidaiji or the 'one great matter'. Afterwards we discuss Saichi's poems. Amongst many others we discuss the following:  How happy I am! Amida's seal is stamped in my heart. The seal called Namu-amida-butsu, The seal of Oya-sama [the loving parent (JCD)], His child has received, And simply says, Namu-amida-butsu. We use the poem to discuss the metaphor of a seal and what it might mean to have Amida's seal stamped on our hearts.

Daniel Hoye   Since 1971, our Society has presented the Role of Law Award to a distinguished canonist.   The Board of Governors is asked to select someone who has the following characteristics in the practice of canon law:   Embodiment of pastoral attitude, commitment to research and study, participation in the development of law, response to needs or practical assistance, facilitation of dialogue and the interchange of ideas within the Society and other groups.   The recipient of this year's Role of Law is a person who loves to play golf. Not a Tiger or a Tigress Woods perhaps, but, weather permitting, our recipient is a weekly golfer. No word on what the handicap is.   Ireland is a favorite vacation spot and every February the plane leaves for some warm spot where golf is the major attraction.   More ad rem, our recipient has been involved in many CLSA committees. Projects involving Lay Ministry, Diocesan Pastoral Councils and convention planning benefitted from this person's expertise.   A graduate of the Catholic University of America, our recipient was awarded a JCD in 1988. Many regional meetings have benefitted from presentations made by this person. At our national conventions we have heard a major address and several seminars have been given.   As one member of the Board remarked, “This person has always said yes to anything regarding CLSA.”   Our recipient has taught canon law at the graduate level as well as in a seminary. This person has worked as a judge in an Archdiocese where the wind blows a lot. She then became a multiple office holder in a place where beer flows a lot: some of HER titles are Chancellor, Judge, Promoter of Justice and Director of Administrative Services.   Tonight, we honor our 2006 recipient of the Role of Law, Barbara Anne Cusack.

Reverend Kevin McKenna was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Rochester in 1977. After serving two parishes he was asked to study canon law at the Gregorian University in Rome, where he earned his JCL. In 1990 he earned his JCD at St. Paul University in Ottawa. Fr. McKenna served as Vice-Chancellor, Chancellor and Director of Legal Services for the Diocese of Rochester until 2000 when he was appointed pastor of St. Cecilia Church. He also served the CLSA as Vice-President, President and Past President, and was presented with the Role of Law Award in 2007. The followng year, Fr. McKenna was appointed as Pastor/Rector of Sacred Heart Cathedral Community.  On top of this service to the Society and hie diocese, Fr. McKenna is author of numerous articles (such as those in America magazine) and books, including A Concise Guide to Canon Law and A Concise Guide to Catholic Social Teaching. He also serves as general editor for Ave Maria Press' Concise Guide series. Fr. McKenna is also a proud, die-hard Toronto Bluejays fans! 

Reverend Kevin McKenna was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Rochester in 1977. After serving two parishes he was asked to study canon law at the Gregorian University in Rome, where he earned his JCL. In 1990 he earned his JCD at St. Paul University in Ottawa. Fr. McKenna served as Vice-Chancellor, Chancellor and Director of Legal Services for the Diocese of Rochester until 2000 when he was appointed pastor of St. Cecilia Church. He also served the CLSA as Vice-President, President and Past President, and was presented with the Role of Law Award in 2007. The followng year, Fr. McKenna was appointed as Pastor/Rector of Sacred Heart Cathedral Community.  On top of this service to the Society and hie diocese, Fr. McKenna is author of numerous articles (such as those in America magazine) and books, including A Concise Guide to Canon Law and A Concise Guide to Catholic Social Teaching. He also serves as general editor for Ave Maria Press' Concise Guide series. Fr. McKenna is also a proud, die-hard Toronto Bluejays fans!
