For 22 years he was known as the "Clown Prince" of the Harlem Globetrotters. But for basketball Hall of Famer Meadowlark Lemon, there was a larger, much larger, purpose for his life. In 1986 Lemon was ordained a Christian minister. And proud as he was of his on-court accomplishments, Meadowlark Lemon had much bigger things on his mind in this 1987 interview about his autobiography Meadowlark. The role in which The Harlem Globetrotters played in the desegregation of sports, especially in the NBA, cannot be understated. In 1948 and 1949, The Globetrotters stunned the sports world by twice defeating the World Champion Minneapolis Lakers of the NBA. Many of basketball's most famous names, from Wilt Chamberlain to Fred' Curly' Neal and Meadowlark Lemon, all donned that renowned red, white, and blue uniform. Noted for their on-court stunts and humor, the Globetrotters have set their sites in a new direction—a desire to play in the NBA. Sunni Hickman, Vice President of Marketing & Sales for The Harlem Globetrotters, spoke to Game Changers about the Globetrotters' ambitions for the future. When Hickman looks back at the history, she sees a clear line from where basketball is today and the path the Harlem Globetrotters forged. “The style of it, the components that they innovated,” Hickman said. “Basketball is an avenue for so many people whether you're on the court, coaching, or behind the scenes. They opened the door for that.”It's important to tell the history of the Globetrotters in a way that will resonate with the fans. Hickman noted that many of today's fans might not know the rich history of the Globetrotters and how the audiences they played for back in the early days may have been the first time such a sports audience saw players of color in the game. “It's important to connect those dots,” Hickman said. And to secure that history and make memories for the next century of Globetrotters fans, Hickman said the goal is for the Harlem Globetrotters to be an official part of the NBA. With expansion team talk in the air, now could be the perfect time to make one of the world's best-known basketball teams one of the NBA's.
After he left the Harlem Globetrotters Meadowlark Lemon continued his ministry. He was an ordained Baptist pastor and brought laughter and the Lord to millions. Meadowlark Lemon is remembered as one of the greatest Globetrotters in the team's history. His gift for comedy connected with audiences for nearly 30 years. Despite his remarkable showmanship, however, his actual basketball skills lacked true greatness, leading to resentment from his teammates and a downfall of his own making. Baseball Card collecting was a rite of passage for most boys growing up from 1954 to 1994. In this episode we discuss why this was and what reasons their decline happened. If you like baseball or not, it’s only a peripheral element, as a lot of nostalgic history to savor in this episode. Big bonus features include.... a sad story of Kirby Puckett not showing up at a card show young Producer Joel Henard drove 8 hours to attend. a sadder story about how Meadowlark Lemon and the rest of the Globetrotters good guys persona was exposed when a young Scott asked for their autograph. and the saddest (and possibly the most hilarious ever) story about Cowboys Jerry Jones destruction of a bathroom stall by guest host Jake Query. WE’RE BACK! In this episode, we call Harlem to get permission to call Nebraska because the state bird of Nebraska is the Western Meadowlark and there was a Harlem Globetrotter named Meadowlark Lemon. But before we call the lovely state of Nebraska, we listen to and sing some Billy Joel songs. When we call Nebraska, we talk to lots of record stores and ask them if they know who Jason Segal is. This is a fun episode, so enjoy it and tell all your friends and family to catch up on the episodes before it’s too late. Jerry Jenkins has been steeped in the craft of writing for more than 40 years. With 21 New York Times bestsellers (seven debuting at #1), 186 books, and over 70 million copies sold, he has become one of the most commercially successful writers of our time. "Left Behind was my 125th book — but not a lot of people realize that." Jerry wrote that 16-title culture-shifting series for Dr. Tim LaHaye, and the publishing world now refers to it as "the Left Behind phenomenon." Several books in the series hit the New York Times bestseller list, selling over 62 million copies. Jerry has seen unprecedented success in both fiction and nonfiction. His insatiable pursuit of great stories has led him to achievement as a biographer to icons such as Hank Aaron, Orel Hershiser, Walter Payton, Meadowlark Lemon, Nolan Ryan, Mike Singletary, B.J. Thomas, and many other men and women. Jenkins assisted Dr. Billy Graham with his memoir, Just As I Am, also a New York Times bestseller. Jerry spent 13 months working with Dr. Graham, and considers the project the privilege of a lifetime. And that project with Billy Graham makes Jerry the perfect guest for my special tonight: "Remembering Billy Graham." We'll talk about segments from the book -- many of which are uncannily pertinent to today's current events and political situations. Listen in as Jerry recounts his time with "America's Pastor" and as we talk about Billy's tremendous impact on America and the world. Some people leave legacies in sports or politics that are talked about for decades or even centuries. Dr. Billy Graham left a legacy which will echo throughout eternity! Just as I am, without one plea, But that Thy blood was shed for me, And that Thou bid'st me come to Thee, O Lamb of God, I come! I come! Just as I am, and waiting not To rid my soul of one dark blot; To Thee whose blood can cleanse each spot, O Lamb of God, I come, I come! Just as I am, Thou wilt receive, Wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve; Because Thy promise I believe, O Lamb of God, I come, I come! Nothing says "screwball" comedy like professional basketball in the late 70's. So why not have a film about a terrible team that becomes great via the powers of astrology? Toss in Dr. Julius Erwing, Kareem Abdul-Jabar, Meadowlark Lemon and repeat stinker stars like Branscombe Richmond and Julius Carry III and you've got some loonie business that is right up our alley. On paper this film should be one to steer clear from. Even just watching the trailer is enough to give casual viewers of crummy films the heebie-jeebies. Yet somehow there is a serious level of charm to this film beyond the obvious live-action WB cartoon version that Jonathan Winters was shooting for. There's a seriously well blended volume of comedy of all types that award both fans of basketball and those that loathe all sports. Everyone loves the Harlem Globetrotters and this film reinforces why that works. The real stinker in The Fish that Saved Pittsburgh is the music. Imagine music worse (yet more catchy) than Cannon's The Apple. Yes, THAT bad of music. And it is arguably more full of bad music than The Apple as well. Woof. We thoroughly enjoyed The Fish that Saved Pittsburgh and if you like films like Odds and Evens and Condorman, you're going to enjoy it too.
Hey there Word Nerds! Welcome back for another episode of DIY MFA Radio. Today I have the pleasure of speaking with Jerry Jenkins, author of 189 books with sales of more than 70 million copies. He’s had 21 New York Times bestsellers, including the Left Behind series and he now shares his writing knowledge on his blog. Earlier this year, he launched his brand new Jerry Jenkins Writers Guild, a writing program that helps serious writers finish their book and get traditionally published. The Guild is already over 1500 members strong, and it is opening its doors to new members on September 19 for the final time this year. In this episode Jerry and I discuss: What inspired him to start writing Learning the business of publishing before you dive in Myths that come up about the process of writing and publishing The importance of editing for good writing and learning from the critique that others receive Plus, Jerry’s #1 tip for writers. About the Author Jerry Jenkins is the author of several novels, including both series and stand-alone. While most people know him as the author of the Left Behind series, Left Behind was actually his 125th book. His insatiable pursuit of great stories has also motivated him to write biographies of icons such as Hank Aaron, Orel Hershiser, Walter Payton, Meadowlark Lemon, Nolan Ryan, Mike Singletary, B.J. Thomas, and many other men and women. For the full list of his published books, click here. To learn more about Jerry or to check out some of his resources for writers, visit his website, or follow him on Twitter or Facebook. Zeus returns to the program, as we reminisce about Meadowlark Lemon and talk about the Harlem Globetrotters annual MLK Day game Monday at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.
"Meadowlark Lemon was one of the finest and most decent people I’ve ever known. Like most of my era, I remember, as a boy, my father taking me to see the “Clown Prince of Basketball” and the Harlem Globetrotters. However, it will be Meadowlark “The Man” that I was fortunate to get to know later in life and whom I will always remember. Meadowlark Lemon was a man of faith who loved people, and believed in giving back. Born in Lexington, South Carolina, Meadowlark and his family moved to Wilmington, North Carolina, where he grew up. After playing basketball at Florida A&M and a stint in the US Army, it was on to the Harlem Globetrotters. Meadowlark quickly emerged as the most famous Globetrotter at a time when they could defeat almost any NBA team. We think of Meadowlark for his on-court antics, but he was a great basketball player and an even greater person. Speaking to inner-city youth at a Salvation Army event I was involved in a few years ago, Meadowlark told the kids that, “There’s no excuse in missing a free throw shot. It’s free. They’re giving it to you. Take it!” Meadowlark knew what he was talking about. His lifetime free throw percentage of 97 percent is the best of anyone who has ever played the game. Meadowlark had his own Christian ministry and it touched many. He prayed with President Ronald Reagan in the Oval Office and he witnessed to and prayed with Alabama Governor George Wallace at his bedside."
