This week on Typology, I sat down with my dear friend, therapist and spiritual director, Michael Cusick for a raw, wise, and deeply compassionate conversation about the connection between attachments and our path to healing. Michael—founder of Restoring the Soul and a true guide for the journey inward—helps us unpack the idea that our symptoms (anxiety, compulsions, burnout, you name it) aren't signs we're broken…but sacred signals that our soul is calling for care. We talk about: How trauma, shame, and burnout stand in the way of our relationship with God Why “trying harder” doesn't lead to transformation What spiritual bypassing actually looks like—and how to avoid it The Four S's of attachment -- seeing, soothing, safety, and security – and the crucial role they play in spiritual healing This is one of those episodes you'll want to listen to more than once and maybe share with a friend who's in the thick of it. ==================================================== CONNECT WITH IAN: Website: https://ianmorgancron.com Podcast: https://typologypodcast.com Online Learning: https://typologyinstitute.com Find Your Type: https://typologyinstitute.com/assessment The Fix: https://ianmorgancron.com/thefix FOLLOW IAN: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ianmorgancron Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ianmorgancron LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ianmorgancron/ YouTube: https://youtube.com/c/imcron FOLLOW TYPOLOGY PODCAST: https://www.instagram.com/typologypodcast https://www.facebook.com/typologypodcast

Getting a glimpse of one of dad's Playboy magazines is so common it's treated as a rite of passage for many men, but beneath that patina of innocence lies the potential for real and lasting damage. Rev. Michael Cusick was first exposed to porn at age 4 and by his teen years was a full-blown porn addict; it continued to blossom into a sex addiction that nearly destroyed his marriage. But he turned his life around and founded Restoring the Soul, a ministry that combines therapeutic principles with scripture to help men overcome unhealthy sexual dependencies. Michael talks with Paul Amos in this week's podcast about the real damage porn addiction can do and how men can break free of it to lead more fulfilling lives.Visit The Redeemed's website for downloadable discussion question sets, show notes, inspirational articles, more resources, or to share your testimony.Join our Exclusive Newsletter: Signup today and be the first to get notified on upcoming podcasts and new resources! The Redeemed is an organization giving men from all backgrounds a supportive, judgment-free environment, grounded in Christian love without demanding participation in any faith tradition, where they can open up about their challenges, worries, and failures—and celebrate their triumphs over those struggles. The What is a Woman documentary by Matt Walsh has landed among the most streamed documentaries in 2022. Should you watch it? The Daily Wire's Matt Walsh interviews modern gender theorists on the subject of gender identity and pursues the definition of the word woman. University of California at Berkeley Law professor Khiara Bridges refused to use the term woman, preferring "people with the capacity to get pregnant" in her senate hearing in July of 2022 while Senator Josh Hawley was a bit stumped by this. The ideological divide between modern gender theorist and those who espouse a conservative and historical view of gender is vast and not bridgeable. What is that divide? This review will cover whether you should see the movie and what explains the divide between these two sides. How many genders are there: https://youtu.be/knOYJLISDwU - Need accountability online? In part II of this incredible episode with special guest Michael Cusick, we continue the deep dive into what lurks beneath the growing epidemic of porn addiction. As Michael unpacks the 5 W's of our brokenness, we begin to see how our awareness and acceptance of both our brokenness and our wholeness and our willingness to simply hold these two in tension is exactly what God desires for our lives and leads to a freedom that perhaps we've never known. Let's face it, the alternative is an exhausting, hamster wheel endeavor. Take a listen and you'll see what we mean. Michael is a gifted speaker, teacher, and clinical counselor. As the Founder and CEO of Restoring the Soul and renowned author of Surfing for God: Discovering the Divine Desire Beneath Sexual Struggle, Michael's personal story of brokenness is the very bridge God used to bring wholeness to his own life, as well as, what God continues to use to bring hope and healing to others. In this incredible episode with special guest Michael Cusick, we begin to take a deep dive into what lurks beneath the growing epidemic of porn addiction. But wait, there's more! Michael's perspective is one that is FULL OF HOPE for those afflicted with an addiction to acting out their sexual brokenness. Let's just cut right to the end...if you want to get over porn, buy a pocket knife. Well, not really, but listen in and it will all make sense. DO NOT MISS THIS! Here are just a few valuable nuggets from this episode:“It's the deceitful whisper of porn that says ‘THIS will make you a real man'”“Two things that seemingly contradict can actually be held side by side and in doing so there's a 3rd thing. Wholeness doesn't simply contradict brokenness or result from ending the struggle of sin, but rather comes from allowing the darkness and the light to be there together.”“Freedom is not just freedom FROM something, but also moving TOWARD something.”“Transformational community is so critical because just like we're wounded in relationship, we also HEAL in relationship.”“Fighting against porn is a losing battle. Rather than fighting against porn, let's fight for the heart of man to become whole. That's a battle that can be won.”Find us at:https://www.foxholesymphony.comhttps://www.facebook.com/foxholesymphonyhttps://www.instagram.com/foxholesymphony/https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCuvcXdDpE79S_D_hInblcDwMusic Credits:Shout by Richard SmithsonMusic from Uppbeat (free for Creators!):https://uppbeat.io/t/richard-smithson/shoutLicense code: QPQ5VPGJFPSB8OTNThrive by All Good FolksMusic from Uppbeat (free for Creators!):https://uppbeat.io/t/all-good-folks/thriveLicense code: H2CHVYJ04BONRKSW

The Coronavirus quarantine has changed just about everything in our lives. That’s certainly true for our kids as well. While they have already been spending several hours a day engaged with their smartphones, the stay-at-home order and school shut-downs have given them more time to fill with their eyes on their screens. One of the dangers is that this gives them more time to find pornography, and more time for pornography to find them. What can parents do to engage in constructive conversations about God’s design for His good gift of sexuality, and the dangers of pornography’s expression of broken sexuality? Stick with us as Jason Soucinek and I engage in a conversation with the author of the book Surfing for God, Michael John Cusick, on this episode of Youth Culture Matters.

What Would Your Life Be Like If Porn and Lust Were No Longer an Issue? We all know someone battling sexually compulsive behavior or habitual sexual sin. You may not know it yet, but statistically it’s true. So maybe you’ve met the guy who has read all the purity books and attended all the sexual integrity groups, met with an accountability partner, yet continues to stay stuck in their struggle. With that struggle comes relational pain, crippling shame, and a sense that things can never really change. It doesn’t have to be this way. There is a way to live that leads to freedom. But here's the thing . . .Freedom is all about restoration of our heart. In this conversation, Michael Cusick is interviewed by Blaine and Sam Eldredge of Ransomed Heart Ministries. The conversation runs the gamut about desire, God, longings, addiction and freedom. When you listen you will learn the following:What are the four mistakes to avoid when trying to overcome a struggle with pornography or lust?Three reasons why more Christian effort and performance will not lead to freedom. Why the best approach to overcoming sexual struggles is to "feed the soul and starve the addiction".Two ways our sexuality gives us clues about our own soul and our relationship with God.
Michael Cusick is a counselor, lecturer, and the founder of Restoring the Soul, a ministry addressing sexual addiction through deep, whole-hearted restoration. His work (including two books) centers on a pair of pressing questions: what, exactly, is our sexuality for, and what does sexual wholeness look like? Safe to say we got more than we bargained for - from a definition of sexuality rooted in the Imago Dei and the creative capacity of human beings to a short list of what not to do with sexual addiction, this conversation completely reframes sexuality and offers some direction for the guy looking to be an alive, whole-hearted man whose sexuality directs him into deep union with God.
Enneagram Twos are part of the shame triad which, for those who are just getting started with the Enneagram, means that ‘shame' is the go-to emotion for Twos, Threes, and Fours. Whatever the external manifestation is of—our struggle, our compulsion, our presenting problem, anger, alcohol, buying stuff that you don't need, sex, helping—shame is always what fuels that compulsion because where there's shame, our soul can't rest, in a sense of being loved. The very thing that we're hungry and thirsty for, which is that kind of deep love for who we are, the shame actually sets us up to never be able to get that. The antidote to that shame is learning to embrace our failures and shortcomings and accept ourselves as we are. Tune in to part two of my conversation with Michael Cusick as we talk about letting go and finding the freedom to live from a place of self-acceptance. Known as The Helper, or as Michael Cusick prefers to call them, The Giver, Twos can be really great therapists and are maybe the most natural to move into that field, but there's also a lot of things about being a Two that work against that. Twos can care too much for the wrong reasons. Twos are so wired and attuned to the needs and the feelings of other people that they are often clueless as to what their own are. They look to other people to take care of their needs without having to acknowledge or articulate them. A large piece of the journey for Twos is to understand that you do have needs, acknowledge those needs, and actually learn how to articulate them. On today's show, Michael Cusick talks about how the Enneagram has taught him to become more conscious of when he is over-identifying with those aspects of his personality that aren't healthy and helps him make different choices. Amidst the clamor of contemporary life, there is the narrow path of slowing down and setting our souls before the insight of the elders. We can take heart: there are wise ones who have gone before us, men and women who have recovered the lost treasure of the Gospel ...
