On Thursday's show: Another one bites the dust in the decimated Astros pitching rotation. This time it's Ronel Blanco who's out for the season and in need of elbow surgery. Is it past time to ask what the Astros are doing to their pitchers' arms? Jeff Balke of the Bleav in Astros podcast talks it over. Also this hour: The National Endowment for the Arts recently terminated grants to nonprofits nationwide, many of which had already been awarded. Houston arts organizations are among those who have had to pivot after losing money they were counting on. We hear from a pair of them. Then, we hear the story of a Houston woman trying to negotiate red tape to gain access to an apartment she can afford. It doesn't work. We discuss why and what can be done about it.And, from Pint of Science to Nerd Nite to Brains in a Bar and Philosophically Drinking, there are many longstanding Houston-area events and programs based at local bars designed to engage Houstonians' minds (and not just douse them in alcohol). We learn more about some of them.

Howland Cultural Center to host first Nerd Nite Nerds of Beacon, unite. Marjorie Lewit, a film and theater director who works behind the scenes on a reality television show, will present the inaugural iteration of Nerd Nite at the Howland Cultural Center on Friday (Nov. 15). Lewit, 42, will hang special lighting and neon signs that illuminate glasses (for reading, of course), a light bulb (inspiration) and the outline of a brain with red letters inside that read "Open." Launched in 2003, Nerd Nite, which resembles a casual TED Talk or Moth Radio Hour, is a loosely organized international movement. Local hosts figure out the details and theme of each gathering. "Usually we hold events at bars and breweries, so we're lucky to have a more sophisticated setting at the Howland, although I wish I could have way more cocktail tables," says Lewit. On the Nerd Nite website, chapters are delineated by a mug of beer inside a green circle. The motto is "Be There and Be Square." Between musical interludes at the Beacon premiere, Lewit and three other presenters will share their knowledge. Caroline Eisner, a Beacon resident and editor of academic books, will explain why "no grammar is incorrect." Her write-up includes the phrases "tables are for eating customers only" and "pinned to the wall, Rudy read the note." Brendan Koerner, a magazine writer and author, will explore the airplane hijackings that occurred almost weekly during the late 1960s and early 1970s. In addition to plumbing the skyjackers' motivations and techniques (including threats with jars of acid), he will explain why the epidemic came to an end. According to Lewit, anyone can become a nerd. All it takes is a passion for knowledge (no matter how obscure) and intellectual engagement. "It's about going against the grain," she says. "It seems sort of antithetical to have an evening dedicated to it. Where some people can read just the headline, we read the entire article, research more about it, ask questions and become more curious, taking an incredible journey down a rabbit hole." She credits her scientist father for fostering the geek gene and instilling a love of storytelling. Her next project is a David Lynch-themed holiday show to be held in Beacon next month. After attending Nerd Nites and similar talks in Los Angeles and New York City, Lewit decided to give it a go. At the Howland Center, she and Nadia Azizi, the outreach coordinator for the Hudson Highlands Land Trust, will discuss frog movement in the Hudson Valley and reference the video game Frogger. Lewit started tracking amphibians on a visit to Germany and volunteers with the land trust and the state Department of Environmental Conservation to document "indicator" species that face risks during migration. "It's dorky, but sometimes I feel removed from social circles," she says. "Sometimes people are shy [about their obsessions], but there are writing nerds, theater nerds, music nerds, sports nerds and people interested in the vastness of outer space and hijacking airplanes." The Howland Cultural Center is located at 477 Main St. in Beacon. Nerd Nite begins at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 15. Tickets are $10 ($15 door). See hudsonvalley.nerdnite.com. The next Nerd Nite, on Dec. 7, will feature a conversation between an astrophysicist and a Christian minister about faith and science, followed by a screening of Contact (1997) presented by Story Screen.

This podcast is brought to you by the Lookdown fish, the most judgmental fish in the sea. These fish are constantly looking down on others, judging them on their fishy business.  If anyone is to be judged it should be Carl Linnaeus who named them in 1758. Couldn't have thought of a more original name Carl? We can only be glad he didn't name more fish this way or we'd be studying species like the swimfish, or the eatfish, or the famed breaths-through-gillsfish. Apologizing is often difficult. Why though? It seems like doing the right thing and saying you're sorry should make you feel great. Well, it may make you feel a little better but there is something else that feels MUCH better. Listen as I explain. https://www.npr.org/2013/04/01/175714511/why-not-apologizing-makes-you-feel-better We have a lot of strange and unusual superstitions in this country. But did you know that every culture on earth has superstitions? By definition, superstitions are irrational beliefs. So why do we cling to them and cherish them? Here to discuss and explain is Heather Alexander, author of The Good Luck Book: A Celebration of Global Traditions, Superstitions, and Folklore (https://amzn.to/3TUWIAe). There are always new things to learn in science. Sometimes useful things like the only real way to cure a hangover or why we use maggots to help wounds heal or how a cup of tea changed the way science is done. Now we're completed three seasons, and it all feels so surreal.  For this final episode of the season, we've pulled together some extra bits from our conversations this year with ant researcher Aaron Fairweather, conservation scientist Lauren Eckert, wetland ecologist Dr. Alex Moore, registered dietician Desiree Nielsen, and Farah Qaiser Director of Research and Policy for Evidence for Democracy.  We don't have plans for another season, but there could be special episodes that make their way into your feed. Make sure to follow Kaylee and Michael with their other podcasts Nice Genes!, and Let's Innovate!, and follow us on social media @NerdNiteYVR for future plans for a Nerd Nite in-person return! With the annual Free Comic Book Day quite literally upon us (like, it's today. Go out and get your books and support your LCS if you haven't already) we figured it was the perfect opportunity to talk comics. Now, this isn't the standard "Alex and Jayare talk about the same books they've been gushing about for the last 7 years." No, friends. This is much better. This week we had the pleasure of chatting with . A graduate of Smith College, Ellie is a co-editor at , an essayist, and a comics historian who recently gave a talk at our local Nerd Nite called "That's CAPTAIN to You: The Evolution of Carol Danvers". It was at this talk that Ellie dropped the phrase "because comics" while trying to recap some of the more....problematic story lines of Captain Marvel's past. And that got us thinking. What are some other moments that are just so wacky the only way you can describe them is with a "because comics"? With the long and somewhat turbulent history of comics, surely there must be more, right? So we reached out to Ellie, we put some lists together, and we put some microphones in front of our faces. The end result is an hour and twenty minutes of some of the most insane and inexplicable moments in comic book history. Because comics. Enjoy! -Jr.

In this podcast always possible Chief Executive, Richard Freeman, has a conversation with Dr Mick Taylor about the behaviour of money and the role of mathematics in the systems of human interaction. Richard and Mick explore why we always talk about what money does rather than what it is and - why over-efficiency caused the financial crash and whether this is a risk for every business or system. Do we need more than one way to create money to have a resilient economy and if money is simply a claim on goods and services, why is it only the banks can create it and not communities or local councils? And, why does Dr Mick have so much respect for Michael Gove? Dr Mick Taylor is a mathematician, teacher and social entrepreneur with a PhD in network science and mathematical epidemiology. Following a career as a secondary school maths teacher, Mick has followed his passion to understand how technology can empower people to collaborate for mutual benefit. Mick's 2013 TED talk, ‘the dynamics of modern money' has been watched by tens of thousands of people online and his popular Nerd Nite events are where academia meets popular science culture and cake. Mick is a Director of Goodmoney, a pioneering social enterprise, whose mission is to make systems of money work better for local communities. --- Useful links: https://www.goodmoney.co.uk/ https://youtu.be/KveTVWCY4xQ --- If you enjoyed the conversation, please like, subscribe and review - and share with colleagues. always possible supports business, community, cultural and education leaders to make critical decisions, test ideas, create impact and to tell their story to new audiences. One of the coolest things of being a part of a growing city like Edmonton, and being in a media savvy and upcoming media such as podcasting, is the chance to connect with other cool people in the city who are just as passionate about how the city changes and looks. Adam Rozenhart is one of those people, his love for media messages and passion for standing up for the underdogs has led him to start some of the most successful ideas in Edmonton. This includes websites like No Homophobes.com which tracks how many times a homophobic slur is used on twitter, to his collaboration on the OilersNation website, bringing Nerd Nite to Edmonton, and his partnership to bring Pride Tape to hockey. Timely considering that the NHL is starting it’s own Hockey is for Everyone campaign to bring inclusivity to the NHL. Adam should be thanked for that. Along with many other things in between, Adam is also a successful podcaster with two shows on the go, one being the popular Ex-Pats which he talks to people who have lived outside of Edmonton. Adam was a natural for this conversation, just because of his ideas about how to bring people together, inclusivity, his sensitive and cheerful good nature.  I was so happy that Adam was able to join me on my coach to talk inclusivity in online spaces, sexism, and how we can make the world a better place. The dreaded quiz is back and we’ve got Pac-man Fever. Aaron got the idea for DAWT at an event for the Extra Life. The Extra Life event was for Edmonton’s Stollery Children’s Hospital and it started with a 4 player Tower Fall Ascension challenge. He decided to enter Codename Goa with DAWT as well. Aaron is featured on a video on that site. Aaron’s game design is Voxel based like Crossy Road. Redneck Rampage. Kingdom of Loathing. Some of Aaron’s favs to play are Fallout, Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes, DLC Quest, Binding of Isaac and “so many other indie games.” Chris talks about his Atari Stunt Cycle console from his youth. Paul thought Zelda II: The Adventure of Link had the most amazing graphics, ever! Until, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past came out. Aaron did a Nerd Nite presentation on death in video games. During the presentation he played a game, rather than use slides. You can check it out here. He used art from Glitch. He created the presentation in Construct 2. Aaron tells us about writing books in an MMOG, Asheron’s Call. You can watch Aaron game and develop on Twitch. We learn how to dodge throwing stars. Chris introduces Paul and Aaron to Buckner & Garcia in the quiz! Pac-man fever on American Bandstand What’s the better E.T. song? Neil Diamond or Buckner & Garcia? Now we all have to watch Wreck-It Ralph! Yikes! Remembering Pogs. Some 80s fun, WKRP in Cincinnati, BJ and The Bear, The Misadventures of Sheriff Lobo, and Bosom Buddies. Watch Aaron on TV showing off DAWT. If you’re in Edmonton, check out GDX Edmonton each year to discover new games. Thanks to Aaron Clifford for taking the time to join us on the Sauce!
