What Makes A Good Indy Film?

Film goers of a certain age have grown up with Indiana Jones. For the Storytelling Breakdown team, that meant seeing Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade on VHS, sharing the first viewings with parents and siblings, and probably seeing Temple of Doom a little later in the ol' childhood. We got Kingdom of the Crystal Skull in 2008 and 15 years ago it looked unlikely that Indiana Jones would go out on top. Ben, Caleb, Larissa, and Stephen saw Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny together. Just a couple days later, they sat down for a conversation about growing up with the movies, what makes a good Indiana Jones film, and how each sequel fared in following what some consider to be a nearly perfect movie. With Harrison Ford stating that he will not be tempted to make another Indy film, how does Dial of Destiny hold up as this character's final adventure? Autumn Schultz joined us for last month's Spider-Verse episode. She returns for this month's Spotlight on K-Dramas. The conversation starts around the 01:49:49 mark. Subscribe to Storytelling Breakdown wherever you get your podcasts. Jenna explains what radio & chemo therapy feels like, the symptoms she felt while going through the treatment, how frequently she had to have it, the results of the treatment and her life following, including how video games, such as the Legend Of Zelda, helped her through the post-cancer isolation during the COVID lockdowns – this is a conversation for everyone, as everyone knows, or will know, someone who gets cancer.   Jenna's breast cancer type was HER-2 Negative.   More info on the Shine Charity Network: https://www.shinecharity.org.uk & Gamers Beat Cancer: https://gamersbeatcancer.co.uk   Listen to Megan's COVID video gaming experience in episode 87 of GCC!   If you want FREE BONUS CONTENT, please screenshot your reviews & ratings of the show and send them to Mike via social media or email and he'll send you an episode of Afterthoughts of your choosing!   To support Mike, as well as rating/reviewing, you can share the show on social media or support financially You can give a one-off payment/donation at https://ko-fi.com/genuinechitchat  or you can subscribe monthly at https://Patreon.com/GenuineChitChat - either option will give you access to the exclusive “Afterthoughts” episodes. This is going to be such a bitter/sweet watch overall... It's been one hell of a ride with Indy for decades, but Harrison Ford is finally hanging up the hat and whip. I'm a big fan of this character, but Temple Of Doom set the bar HIGH for me. And while I'm a fan of Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull, unlike majority, I do feel Dr. Jones has one more adventure left in him. So let's see what Logan director James Mangold can bring to the table. Hopefully not something as emotional as the actual Logan ending. Enjoy, people.

S6 PREMIERE OF "A BIGGER BOAT" Season six will focus on the SSCU, the Steven Spielberg Cinematic Universe. Spielberg,  a director who once reigned over Hollywood but has since directed himself into respectable obsolescence has had as many cinematic lives as Batman, a new version trotted out every so often with mixed results. Our guests will walk us through their experiences with Beardo's films and what Spielberg meant then and what he means now. Co-host Ken picked this inaugural episode consisting of RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK (1981) and KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL (2008) as his best and worst Spielbergs.  Raiders is both one of the most enduring and best-looking films of Spielberg's long career.  Paired with the misbegotten, foul-looking Crystal Skull (which made more than any other Indiana Jones movie - people, c'mon!), is a stunning double bill. We'll chart how the mighty king of popular culture has fallen from the tippy top of Devils Tower to whatever the hell was happening in Ready Player One with some surprising theories. Jack and Thomas moderate a lively convo to kick this season off!THEME SONG: WEIRD A.I.Email: thegoodthepodandtheugly@gmail.comFacebook: https://m.facebook.com/TGTPTUInstagram: https://instagram.com/thegoodthepodandtheugly?igshid=um92md09kjg0Twitter: https://twitter.com/thegoodthepoda1YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6mI2plrgJu-TB95bbJCW-gBuzzsprout: https://thegoodthepodandtheugly.buzzsprout.com/Letterboxd (follow us!):Ken: Ken KoralJack: jackk1096

At the risk of sounding redundant, we thought we'd never have a guest want to target this week's film, Raiders of the Lost Ark.  @KevinGootee and @KevinIsrael_NJ would've sworn this would've stayed on the bulletproof list but here we are.  Blake Fulton is our second listener winner and decided to wake up and chose violence with his selection.  Our THIRD Indiana Jones film now completes the trilogy but can Blake truly do the impossible and convince Kevin and Kevin this film should stare right into the open Ark of the Covenant?  Or do our plucky hosts kick his argument right into airplane propellers? You can also subscribe to us on youtube (it really helps!) if you want to see our cute faces and great teeth.  DM us to get some sweet GTSC stickers!Don't forget, you can find us on all podcasts platforms: apple iTunes, Spotify, google, spreaker, stitcher, iheartradio, castbox. "Adventure has a name," said one of the many taglines used to describe the character of Indiana Jones, the brainchild of George Lucas and Steven Spielberg. RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK should be considered classic cinema by now, as well as a window into an even older form of cinema, the cliffhanger serials made famous Republic Pictures that Spielberg and Lucas grew up watching. What the auteurs created when they conjured Indy was a tradition started even further back than those cliffhangers, and that's the kind of aspirational archetypal hero that daring young people dream of becoming. The kind of guy you think you're going to embody when you face a death-defying situation, or maybe when you're just trying to build the courage to ask a girl out. As Millennials, we grew up watching the Indiana Jones Trilogy: RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, THE TEMPLE OF DOOM, THE LAST CRUSADE, and eventually, for better or worse, KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL. And in this episode, we're joined by listener Mike to talk about why the character had such a deep effect on us when we watched Indy not just as kids but as adults, as well. We talk about the man behind Indiana Jones, Harrison Ford, and how he embodies the character and brings him to life. We also talk about the individual films, and how they resonate with us as works of cinema. Just finished the Indiana Jones movies and yes there is a reason why he was voted the greatest movie character of all time...  The entire collection was full of one liners that made us laugh and think at the same time. In the final movie of the quad set, “Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull,” there is a scene where Indiana crashes a motorcycle into the university library where he worked as a professor... As all the students looked on in complete shock, there was one kid that remained in his seat and said: “Excuse me Dr. Jones, I just had a question on Hargrove's normative culture model...” IJ: “Read Vere Gordan Childe on diffusionism. He spent most of his life in the field...”  As he hopped back onto the motorcycle, Indiana then followed up with a quote that is representative of the entire Indiana Jones character and mantra... “If you want to be an archaeologist, you gotta get out of the library.”   BOOM

Things get predictably stupid, as the hosts end up arguing over, among other nonsense, the Russian-ness of the movie version of a comic book character Tim Roth once portrayed. Is the MacGuffin truly interchangable, and how does it impact on your character writing? Stu and Chas are joined by a special guest - Scriptmag contributor Brad Johnson - to discuss how the choice of the MacGuffin can impact on the quality of an action/adventure film. To test this thesis, our heroes compare the auspicious originals of two iconic franchise with their, um, less-than-auspicious 4th instalments (in other words we compare RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK with KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL and THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL with ON STRANGER TIDES) as well as look at two recent & original entries into the genre, namely NATIONAL TREASURE and PRINCE OF PERSIA. Our heroes uncover how key the relationship between the protagonist and the MacGuffin is and how this can impact on writing in any genre, not just action/adventure.
