Croesus, the king of Lydia, who reigned for 14 years in the 6th century BCE, was legendary for his wealth. You might wonder what the man did to protect his treasures. Well, rumor has it that he used to put curses on his most valuable belongings, including the infamous King Croesus's golden brooch, one of the most precious items in his jewelry collection. For hundreds of years, the treasure of King Croesus lay underground, lost but not forgotten. But one day in 1965, several men came across the ancient burial mound of a Lydian princess. The men didn't excavate all the treasure at once. They returned once again in 1968 but didn't find anything but wall paintings. Among the artifacts they'd stolen, there was a beautiful golden brooch in the shape of a winged seahorse... Amul Currently ranked as the eighth largest dairy organisation in the world, Amul was founded in 1946 as part of a cooperative movement against Polson Dairy and grew under the chairmanship of Verghese Kurien. What would become “the taste of India”, was at its heart a movement to ensure fair earnings for the country's farmers. The brand found its mascot in the round-eyed utterly butterly Amul girl in a polka-dot dress. That was back in the '60s. The Amul girl has since kept a close eye on the goings-on in the country, recording them day after day with her puns, witty takes and compassion, depending on what emotion the event calls for. From the Pokhran nuclear tests of 1998 to when India lifted the cricket World Cup in 2011 to Wordle, through her, Amul has kept a finger on the country's pulse. Parle-G Amul milk has given you chai. But what is tea without Parle-G? The perfect accompaniment to chai in the middle of a busy work day, Parle-G was founded on swadeshi ideals in 1929 by Mohanlal Chauhan. It was an answer to expensive British biscuits — perhaps with a touch of French. As the '80s approached, competitors started to launch their own glucose biscuits. Parle-Gluco could see its market share thinning as people started getting confused by similar brand names. Many also just wanted glucose biscuits — brand no bar. So, in 1982 the brand reinvented itself as Parle-G. A powerhouse of energy, a huge section of society started depending on Parle-G, not just for fulfilling nutritional needs but also for its budget-friendly prices — the prices remain so. Along with milk, Parle-G came to be considered staple baby food. The signature white-and-yellow striped biscuit packet, with the chubby Parle baby girl, is probably the most recognisable brand in the country, and according to Nielsen, continues to be the world's best-selling biscuit. Maruti800 Another product that is inseparable from the India story is the Maruti 800. The joint venture between Maruti Udyog and Japan's Suzuki Motors started with this small, box-like hatchback that was affordable and offered great mileage. It launched in 1983 at a price tag of 47,500 rupees. Tailor made for tribulations on the average Indian road and the aspirations of the average Indian family, the small car proved a revolution in the Indian auto sector, eventually replacing the legendary Ambassador and much-loved Fiat Padmini as the car of the first choice. Even as the economy opened up in 1991, the 800 remained a favourite, and Maruti Suzuki continued its hold over the auto market with the largest share, with its successive offerings. Air India If Maruti Suzuki is the king of Indian roads, Air India is the Maharajah of the Skies. The carrier is known for its royalty when it was born out of the J R D Tata-led group in 1932. But the brand struck a chord with the average Indian reader too. Back in the days, it had an aura about it and was one of the few organisations that put India on the global map. The carrier hit the skies roaring and found success for many decades thereafter. But then, turbulence hit. Air India was nationalised and it had seen fair share of losses. Amid all of this, Air India shouldered some of the biggest Indian evacuations during the Gulf war and most recently in a pandemic. Now back with the Tatas, the maharajah hopes to revive its glory days. Bollywood Moving on from Maharajah to the brand of brands which gave us the “Badshah” of Bollywood Shah Rukh Khan. How does one even begin to describe a brand like Bollywood: India's biggest entertainer; society's mirror; the most influential influencer; a world of storytellers and dream merchants; one of the country's most popular exports....Where does one start from? From Dadasaheb Phalke or Dadasaheb Torne? From Satyajit Ray or Bimal Roy? Or Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Basu Bhattacharya or Shyam Benegal? Which stars does one focus on? The gorgeous Madhubala? The institutions called Prithviraj K

The Friday Newsletter |  Daily Gardener Community   Historical Events   1725 Birth of John Hope, botanist, professor, and founder of the Royal Garden in Edinburgh. John produced considerable work on plant classification and physiology. He was appointed the King's botanist for Scotland and superintendent of the Royal Garden in Edinburgh. At the time, Edinburgh was the place to study medicine, and all medical students had to take botany courses. John created a school for botanists after spinning off the school's materia medica (pharmacy) department, which allowed him to specialize exclusively in botany. John was a captivating instructor. He was one of the first two people to teach the Linnean system. He also taught the natural system. John was one of the first professors to use big teaching diagrams or visual aids to teach his lectures. John led over 1,700 students during his tenure. His students traveled from all over Europe, America, and India. John Hope Alumni include the likes of James Edward Smith, founder and first President of the Linnaean Society, Charles Drayton, and Benjamin Rush. A field botanist, John encouraged his students to go out and investigate the Flora of Scotland. He awarded a medal every year to the student who collected the best herbarium.   1818 Birth of Arthur Cleveland Coxe, American theologian and composer. Arthur served as the second Episcopal bishop of Western New York. He once wrote, Flowers are words, which even a baby can understand.   1891 Death of Carl Wilhelm von Nägeli, Swiss botanist. Although he studied cell division and pollination, Carl's claim to fame is being the guy who discouraged Gregor Mendel from pursuing his work on genetics. Gregor regarded Carl as a botanical expert and his professional hero. When Gregor sent Carl an overview of his work with pea plants in a letter, Carl dismissed the results out of hand, labeling them "only empirical, and impossible to prove rationally." Carl poo-pooed natural selection. Instead, he believed in orthogenesis, a now-defunct theory that living organisms have an internal driving force - a desire to perfect themselves- and evolve toward this goal. Over a seven-year period in the mid-1800s, Gregor Mendel grew nearly 30,000 pea plants - taking note of their height and shape and color - in his garden at the Augustinian monastery he lived in at Brno (pronounced "burr-no") in the Czech Republic. His work resulted in what we now know as the Laws of Heredity. Gregor came up with the genetic terms and terminology that we still use today, like dominant and recessive genes. Carl Wilhelm von Nägeli's dismissal prompted Gregor to give up his work with genetics. After his promotion to the abbot of the monastery, Gregor focused on his general duties and teaching. In 1884, Gregor died without ever knowing the impact his work would have on modern science. Fifteen years later, in 1899,  a friend sent the Dutch botanist Hugo de Vries a copy of Gregor's work - calling it a paper on hybridization - not heredity. At the same time, Gregor's paper was uncovered by a student of Carl Wilhelm von Nägeli's - a man named Carl E. F. J. Correns. Hugo de Vries rushed to publish his first paper on genetics without mentioning Gregor Mendel. But he did have the nerve to use some of Gregor's data and terminology in his paper. Carl Correns threatened to expose De Vries, who then quickly drafted a new version of his paper, which gave proper credit to Gregor Mendel. Through his work with the humble pea plant, Gregor came up with many of the genetic terms still used today, like dominant and recessive genes.    1907 It was on this day that Francis Younghusband, British Army officer, explorer, and spiritual writer, documented the progression of spring in the Residency Garden in Kashmir. Francis shared his observations in a book called Kashmir(1909). The Residency Garden was an English country house that was built specifically for guests by the Maharajah, and so naturally, Francis loved staying there. Here's what Francis wrote in May of 1907 about the Residency Garden, which was just coming into full flower. Francis observed,  By May 1st ...The May trees were in full blossom. The bank on the south side of the garden was a mass of dark purple and white irises, and [the] evening [sun] caused each flower to [become] a blaze of glory. Stock was in full bloom. Pansies were out in masses. Both the English and Kashmir lilacs were in blossom, and the columbines were in perfection.  The first horse chestnuts came into blossom on May 10th, and on that date, the single pink rose, sinica anemone, on the trellis at the end of the garden, was in full bloom and of wondrous beauty; a summer-house covered with Fortune's yellow was a dream of golden loveliness;  I picked the first bloom of some English roses that a kind friend had sent out... and we had our first plateful of strawberries. A light mauve iris, a native of Kashmir, [is now in] bloom; ...and some lovely varieties of Shirley poppy... from Mr. Luther Burbank, the famous plant-breeder of California, began to blossom; and roses of every variety came [on] rapidly till the garden became a blaze of color.   Grow That Garden Library™ Book Recommendation Lemon, Love & Olive Oil by Mina Stone This book came out in September of 2021. Now, if you're a cookbook lover, you know that Mina's debut cookbook called Cooking For Artists was a smash hit. It was also self-published. And in fact, right now, if you go on Amazon and you try to get a copy of that first cookbook, you'll pay somewhere in the neighborhood of $150. To me, Mina's story is fascinating. She actually went to school to be a designer, and then, on the side, she started cooking for families. And then she started cooking for special events. And then eventually, she started cooking for a gallery, and that's where she started cooking for artists. Thus, the name of her first book. The story behind the second book, Lemon Love and Olive Oil, stems from the fact that whenever people would ask MIna for ingredients to make something taste great, her answer was always lemon juice, olive oil, and a little bit of salt. So, those are her go-to ingredients. Mina contends that you can make anything taste good with a little bit of her favorite three ingredients: lemon juice, olive oil, and salt. So that became the name for the cookbook, except salt was replaced with love. When this cookbook was released, it met with rave reviews. In fact, the New York times rated it a best cookbook of the year, writing, Author of the cult-favorite Cooking for Artists, Mina Stone, returns with a collection of 80 new recipes inspired by her traditional Greek heritage and her years cooking for some of New York's most innovative artists.   I've watched a couple of interviews with Mina, and one thing she says over and over again was that when she was creating this cookbook is, she was constantly thinking about the love aspect of these recipes. By that, Mina was focusing on the comfort level and the coziness factor of the food. So that's what she was trying to capture with these 80 recipes. I found that so poignant, especially in light of the fact that she was putting this together during the pandemic while she's in lockdown in 2020. Mina is not the kind of person that comes up with a cookbook and then has to go out and create a bunch of recipes. That's not how Mina works. Instead, Mina pays attention to the recipes that she starts making again and again. So these are recipes that have staying power. They are the recipes that pass the Mina Test, and they rise to the top of her favorites because they are just naturally so good. Also, if you are a lover of reading cookbooks, you are going to really enjoy Mina's book. Before each section, there are essays from Mina that share stories about her family - and her grandmother, who is kind of the original Greek cook in Mina's life.  Mina has great insight, not only on these recipes and ingredients but also from her sheer personal experience.  I couldn't help, but think as I was reading this cookbook that Mina could write a memoir because her stories are so intriguing. In addition to the essays for each section of the book, every recipe gets a little personal introduction as well. For an excerpt, I selected a few little snippets from a section that Mina calls My Kitchen. This is a chapter about the key ingredients that Mina uses on repeat. She writes, I've always found pantry lists in cookbooks to be intimidating. Asa self-trained home cook, I never sought out hard-to-find ingredients. It never crossed my mind as an option. The ingredients in my recipes and the food found in my pantry reflect my surroundings touched with a dose of Greekness. (It can't be helped.) Here are some thoughts on how I approach cooking in my kitchen, what I like to keep in my cupboards, what I run out to the store for, and some clarification on how I wrote the recipes.   Salt Sea salt is more salty and kosher salt is less salty. Because kosher salt is less salty it gives you more control over the seasoning. For example, it is great for seasoning meat because you can use more and achieve a lovely salt crust as well as the right amount of seasoning without oversalting. It is the salt up using the most.   Extra-Virgin Olive Oil I like to use olive oil sparingly during cooking (this makes thedish lighter) and add the bulk of it at the end, once cooking is completed. use much more olive oil in the recipes than people are accustomed to using. suggest adding more than you would think when you're cooking from this book. That's a great little tidbit, especially if you're using olive oil for cooking with your garden harvest. There is so much that comes out of our garden that goes into the pan with a ton of olive oil. But now, maybe you can dial that back a little bit with this tip from Mina.   Lemons They add floral buoyancy but, above all, a fresh form of acid that I usually prefer to vinegar. When using lemons for zest, try to always use organic ones.    I've never thought about lemons that way, but I love how she describes that floral buoyancy. And, you know, she's exactly right. Personally, I also think that there's something just a little less harsh about lemon juice as compared to vinegar. So if you have a sensitive tummy, consider incorporating lemon juice instead of vinegar.   Green Herbs: Parsley, Mint, Cilantro, and Basil I like fresh herbs in abundance and can often find a place to incorporate them with relative ease. In the recipes, herbs are usually measured by the handful: 1 handful equals about 1/4 cup. It doesn't need to be exact, but that is a good place to start if you need it. This advice is helpful as well because if you're planning your kitchen garden, you need to think about how many plants you need to plant so that you can have an abundant harvest. Just to give you an idea of how much Basil I use in the summertime, I usually end up buying about four to five flats of Basil.   Dried Oregano Oregano is my number one dried herb. Greek oregano has a pronounced savory and earthy flavor to it, and it is my preference to use in more traditional Greek dishes. Better-quality dried oregano, which is milder in flavor, is great to use as a general seasoning for salad, fish, and meats.   This book is 272 pages of more than eighty Mediterranean-style dishes and the stories that inspired them. These recipes are uncomplicated, and they're Mina's go-to recipes. And, of course, they can always be enhanced with lemon, olive oil, and salt. You can get a copy of Lemon, Love & Olive Oil by Mina Stone and support the show using the Amazon link in today's show notes for around $15.   Botanic Spark 2017 Death of Polly Park, American-Australian amateur gardener, speaker, and writer. Remembered as the designer of Boxford, a Canberra garden, Polly and her husband Peter created classic garden styles using their own creativity and gumption. On their half-acre suburban property, Boxford attracted visitors from across the world and featured six unique gardens: a modern garden inspired by Roberto Burle Marx, an English knot garden, a parterre garden with an Italien statue from Florence, a Chinese garden inspired by the Suzhou ("sue-joe") garden, an Indian garden, and a Japanese garden. Polly and Peter made a great garden team. Polly came up with the design ideas, and Peter was the muscle. Polly created the stone courtyard for the Indian garden and a mosaic inspired by the great 20th-century Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer ("Nee-myer") for the modern garden. Peter built the pond and meditation house for the Japanese garden. In 1988, Polly wrote a biography of their gardens in the book The World in My Garden. Although Boxford was identified as a National heritage site - after Peter and Polly sold the property in 2006 - the garden was destroyed. In 2011, Peter died. Polly followed him home six years later on this day at the age of 96. You can get a used copy of The World in My Garden by Polly Park and support the show for around $17.    Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener And remember: For a happy, healthy life, garden every day.   John Hope, Arthur Cleveland Coxe, Carl Wilhelm von Nägeli, Francis Younghusband, Lemon, Love & Olive Oil by Mina Stone, Polly Park

Hardcover. A panoramic history of the savage combat on the Western Front between 1914 and 1918 that came to define modern warfare. The Western Front evokes images of mud-spattered men in waterlogged trenches, shielded from artillery blasts and machine-gun fire by a few feet of dirt. This iconic setting was the most critical arena of the Great War, a 400-mile combat zone stretching from Belgium to Switzerland where more than three million Allied and German soldiers struggled during four years of almost continuous combat. It has persisted in our collective memory as a tragic waste of human life and a symbol of the horrors of industrialized warfare.

Listeners, y'all are in for a real treat this week, as we have one of the choicest content-area cognoscenti on the Gulf Coast to talk on a topic that continues to be an increasingly important issue across the industries: hiring and developing your workforce. So, who did our boys Sid and Keith get to come dish on development? Honestly, we all knew there was only one man who could best answer the call - the Prince of Personnel, the Lord of Labor Studies, the Maharajah of Manpower ... it's Dr. Josh Duplantis, the Dean of Workforce Development for the Coastal Alabama Community College System, here to drop knowledge bombs on our boys (though we do somewhat question the mental acuity and judgement of someone who would publicly admit to having Sid as a good friend ... choices). On his house call to the podcast, Dr. Josh and our boys get into the nitty gritty behind what's wrong forthwith in the workforce world and what we would want to do to help our own businesses wind up with a win. Obviously, Dr. Josh and our boys have to talk about the elephant in the room of the world's current business situation - the ongoing workforce shortage - but Dr. J slam dunks the explanation on that in a way everyone can understand (even Keith) - the present problem in procuring people and pathetic participation is predicated on a pair of propositions: the en masse exodus of the Boomer generation from the workforce (Okay, Boomers ... as the kids say ... on the TikTak or the TickyTacky or whatever that video app nonsense is) and the walkout of women in the workforce due to childcare concerns thanks to COVID. And Dr. J has the receipts to back up his assertions - spitting fire facts like there are currently only 65 unemployed people to fill every 100 open jobs currently - you're gonna have shortages, son, when you don't have enough people to replace the ones who just noped out on the job market. Our boys and Dr. J will also get into the nooks and crannies of our culture (and the lazy basement-dwelling, neck-bearded, entitled as hell Millennials still livin' with their mommas), they do also get real and put some perspective on how businesses also need to step their game up when it comes to wages and benefits. And they'll even get into the tall grass and look at seemingly tangential items like the fertility rate and how it could affect our labor futures (And we can tell you why the birth rate stays so low - it's because there hasn't been a truly great baby-making song put out for the populace since the late, great Teddy Pendergrass released "Close the Door" back in 1978. Go listen to it. Tell us we're wrong ... See, Teddy P knows). So, how do we energize the economy and enliven our employees? Well ... you'll have to actually listen to this week's episode to get the best bits of brilliance from the Baron of Blue-Collars and Breadwinners (We knew we had one more in us). Listen up, listen well and listen often - we'll see y'all next week. (And, completely as an aside ... we may have erred in a previous statement. Teddy P did put out "Turn Off the Lights" as a B-side to "If You Know Like I Know" in 1979, and while we cannot currently verify the numbers on it, we do assume a large number of babies may have been made to that song. We appreciate the opportunity to correct our previous statement here and apologize for the error.)

Indian weddings are famous for their exuberance and that of Prince Nau Nihal Singh, who married Bibi Nanaki Kaur Atariwala in 1837, may well have been the most extravagant of all time. This lavish month-long celebration was an emotional moment for the young Prince's grandparents, Ranjit Singh, ‘the lion of Punjab', Maharajah and founder of the splendid Sikh dynasty that ruled northern India from 1799-1849, and his beloved wife, Maharani Datar Kaur. They oversaw the wedding preparations and presided over the whole extravaganza. But while the guests feasted and the dancing girls performed, Ranjit Singh and his advisors were busy negotiating with representatives of the East India Company over the division of power in the Punjab and beyond. 2004 Annual Report     Advances:  The biggest advance in our history was this year when we went from “Tampabay'sBest Kept Secret” to a Household Name in the local area. This was due largely to the great media exposure donated by six local Cox Radio Stations. Hillsborough County gave us big green directional signs in 5 locations to direct visitors to our door. For the first year ever, in our 12 year history, we were able to cover all of the sanctuaries expenses from its own income! Thank you everyone! Howard Baskin was able to find a reasonable CPA, Marsha Weiss, and an accountant who completed an audit for our finances for grant writing purposes. This enabled us to apply to the Combined Federal Campaign and to apply to the online version of The Better Business Bureau called Give.org. Christy Anderson launched our first E-zine that carries AdvoCat issues to 5000 subscribers and links to our electronic version of The Big Cat Times. Jamie finished a movie that was nearly five years in the making called “The Big Cat Picture“. This has been widely distributed and 2 minute clips on every species of wild cat has now been added to our website from the movie. We wrote a 20 year plan and began taking steps to reach our goal of eliminating the cause of so much suffering and abuse.   Animal Care:  We took in five new tigers and a lion, but had to turn away 114 big cats. We submitted our anesthesia machine parts to have one usable unit rebuilt.  We built 5 new Cat-A-Tats with pools and dens and another multi-acre enclosure with dens and a pool.  Built new dens for Esmerelda, Tobi, and Little Feather and cage enhancements for Sultan, Canyon, Genie, Maharajah, Bailey, Scratch, Baby Cakes and Hercules. Shere Khan and China Doll got a hurricane shelter and we repaired cages that were badly damaged from the four hurricanes in six weeks. The Enrichment team is growing stronger and more professional in their collaboration with others, such as Disney, to help write a comprehensive Enrichment Guide. Operant Conditioning has been led by Jennifer Ruszczyk with marvelous results.   The cats are learning their cues and are much easier to handle for check ups. All of the volunteers have retaken their animal care classes this year and have re certified their credentials via testing. Dr. Liz Wynn, DVM has been donating time every week as a liaison to Dr. Stacie Wadsworth, DVM. We began using Truly Nolan for regular flea spraying and for rodent control with marvelous results.   Staff and Volunteer Training:  Attended the USDA's Big Cat Symposium.  Jamie Veronica attended AZA's weeklong college course, Managing for Success. Jen, Howard and Carole attended and presented Operant Conditioning and Cage Building at The Association of Sanctuaries' annual conference in Stone Mountain, GA. Susan Mitchell attended Karen Pryor's Clicker Expo and spent some time with Gary Priest from the San Diego Zoo and quite a bit of time with his top trainer of cats.  Susan also completed the Safe Capture course that some of our staff attended last year. Our volunteer program was overhauled to create an administrative branch for the first time in our history. We now have red through green level requirements on both the Keeper side and the Partner (admin) side and the proud recipients of those levels of accomplishment.   We began our first Intern program with three interns. Cathy Mayeski has been screening applicants from around the world and by the year's end we have had 3 successful graduates from the program and two of them moved here to stay in the volunteer program. By the year's end we have 6 full time interns and by next year hope to have 12-15. They have come from Wales, Canada, Brazil, Spain, Peru and all across the U.S. The interns work all day, six days a week for three months in exchange for housing and the experience of a lifetime. They are a volunteer force unto themselves and now have their own Den Mother, Gale Ingham who keeps them busy and makes sure they get the most out of their time at Big Cat Rescue.   Education:  Hired Kathryn Quaas as our new Education Director and started offering regularly scheduled kid's tours every Saturday at 9 AM. Summer Camp 2004 was a big hit. We created, with the help of creator LaWanna Jones, and a grant from Ken and Terri Pereira, an interactive CD called The Truth About White Tigers and distributed 1000 free copies. With the help of PeTA we were able to distribute 1000 copies of their CD about veganism.   Produced a new screen saver called 12 Tigers that has tiger photos and facts. Created an online game with the help of Point 2 Nature that children will be able to access online for free. It is a memory game of matching the cats with their fur and their sounds for fun fact rewards.   Created hundreds of pages of online games, puzzles, calendars, free screen savers, quizzes, polls and colouring activities for children of all ages. These interactive games are part of our campaign to reach the schools and day care centers with activities to teach children about animals and to inspire awe and respect for their beauty and their rightful place in nature. Our Big Cat Expedition continues to be our most pervasive educational tool and Susan Mitchell has trained countless people in the Operant Conditioning program portion that we offer to illustrate the medical needs of the cats and how we meet them. Our tours continue to increase and this allows Denny Mitchell, Brian Czarnik, Bill Lewis and many other great tour guides to educate people about the plight of these animals in the wild and in captivity. The most frequent response that we still hear from guests is “I had no idea!”.   Legislation:  We reviewed the Captive Wild Animal Coalition‘s proposed sanctuary standards and wrote and submitted the sub section specific to felid care based upon a compilation of our own standards, those of ACE and Florida's Fish and Game.  We assisted Animal Control's approach to the State of Florida in an effort to require owners of dangerous exotic animals to post on their property the dangers that exist and to allow the public to easily determine if their neighbors are harboring dangerous animals.  We began promoting a page on our site called Support Legislation and AdvoCats.   We partnered with Capitol Advantage to create the first and only online presence in the Animal Welfare industry that is promoted on MSN, Yahoo, AOL, Congress.gov, PBS, the LA Times and E-the-People. In just the first days of creation is already responsible for about 30 letters per day going out to legislators on important animal issues that are currently pending including: Stopping canned hunts, prohibiting steel jawed traps and asking USDA to quit issuing licenses to people who are circumventing the new 2004 law that prevents the sale of big cats as pets. We noted a drop in the number of big cats being abandoned. Every year the number of big cats in need of shelter was doubling and by 2003 we were turning away 312 exotic cats. After the passage of the Captive Wild Animal Safety Act in Dec. 2003 that prohibited the sale across state lines of big cats as pets that number dropped to 114 abandoned cats in 2004. We posted a composite of all state laws and enabled viewers to go directly to their state's online regulations. Our founder became a major donor to the only Political Action Committee fund for Animal Welfare issues called HumaneUSA.   Fundraising and Marketing:  We purchased a new Point of Sale system with cash register and inventory software.  Implementing this software has enabled us to better track inventory, sales and trends. On May 19 our web site received 29,724 page requests to be our largest day ever. By the end of the year our site is currently averaging about 100,000 hits per day. Jamie and Howard attended Scott Moller's Fundraising Seminar in Tampa and Howard, Carole and Jen attended Scott Moller's Fundraising Seminar in Stone Mountain, GA. Scott Lope and Daniel Capiro have been working closely with players of the TampaBay Lightning to raise awareness. Thanks largely to the lion vs tiger ligers thousands of dollars in radio air time donated by six Cox Radio stations, our Fur Ball attracted 850 guests and we netted 50,000.00 as well as had a Roaring Good Time. Jamie created our first Holiday Card with a collage of the cats for our use and for sale in the gift shop. The Adoption Kits have been so successful that she has had to order them by the hundreds from a printer, rather than printing them one page at a time on her computer as she has done in the past.   Our online giftshop sales soared from $7,914.00 in 2003 to $32,351.00 in 2004. We began monitoring news alerts at Google for exotic cat issues and proactively writing in to the media. We were in the press 63 times compared to 35 times in 2003. Our newsletter The Big Cat Times (formerly Cat Tales) is now in color and goes out quarterly to 23,000 supporters.   Grounds Improvement:  At our January zoning hearing, 96 people wrote letters of support and 47 attended the hearing and spoke in support of the fine work we are doing on a global level. At the second hearing more than 200 supporters came to stand before the Board of county Commissioners in favour of Big Cat Rescue's planned development. In the past we had to haul 30 bags of trash, twice a week to the end of the road. This year we managed to get our very own dumpster on site. We moved the golf cart shed, tore down the old green barn and re-routed the fencing to increase parking area. We repainted the cabins, food prep, painted the E-Center and repainted several of the cages. We installed new signs on the buildings so that they are consistently called by name in our documentation and training manuals and to avoid confusion. Sentry Signs enabled us to put new signs on most of the cats along the tour path that states their name, species, date of birth and how they were rescued.   We began a fence improvement campaign called the Catter-Wall. Two marble lions were donated for our front gate and we may have someone willing to donate a new front entrance next year. Food Prep was tiled and had gutters installed all the way around. Kiss Cote was applied to the Leopard Cat-A-Tat as a rust preventative trial model in March. The roads were reinforced to prevent inaccessibility to certain areas in the rainy season. We started the process for adding a 4 bedroom, 3 bath dormatory for interns. We upgraded to broadband and now have a wireless Internet connection available for guests.   Helping Others:  We covered ad costs for The Association of Sanctuaries annual conference in March to insure that the people who need the training will know it is available.  We also paid expenses for three of the speakers on Cage Building, Operant Conditioning and the No More Homeless Pets approach to companion animal abandonment.  We shared the secret to our high search engine placement with TAOS and CWAPC and members of both organizations. We joined the Sanctuary Workers And Volunteers Association SWAVA and provided material for them to launch their campaign. We send out news alerts to everyone in our new Yahoo group and in the TAOS Yahoo group and include a Tip of the Day feature in which we share ideas that have worked for us. We gave permission to Florida's state government site, at their request, to use our photos to illustrate why we should protect the Florida Panther.   Charities that we donated to this year:  100 passes to No More Homeless Pets Adopt-a-thon and gift certificate for a Big Cat Expedition, 50 passes and gift certificate for a Big Cat Expedition to Florida Voices for Animals, 50 passes to Clearwater High school's Project Graduation, 100 passes to Dress For Success, 300 passes to The National Humane Societies spay/neuter and adoption programs.  Big Cat Expedition to Clearwater Chamber of Commerce's annual fundraiser. Donated a Big Cat Expedition and several Two for One Passes to Animal Coalition of Tampa for their Spay Day fundraiser. Big Cat Expedition for two and 200 passes to the Tampa Museum of Art. 1000 passes and a 1500. Expedition Package was donated to the Global Understanding's Carousel Ball. There were many, many more that we donated to this year that we did not keep stats on.  We offered to let No More Homeless Pets – HC and Florida Voices for Animals utilize our legislative program in a manner that is branded for their constituents.   Other:  Carole Baskin represented The Association of Sanctuaries at the Captive Wild Animal Protection Coalition's conference in San Francisco and was made The Association of Sanctuaries liaison to The Captive Wild Animal Protection Coalition.  She served as the interim President of the Association of Sanctuaries in 2004.    2004 was a grrreat year and we are looking forward to an even better 2005!!!   The narrow mission of Big Cat Rescue is to provide the best permanent home we can for the limited number of abused, abandoned and retired big cats that the sanctuary can afford to take in. However, the sanctuary must turn away over 100 cats per year and the number is growing.   The broader mission, therefore, is to reduce the number of cats that suffer the fate of abandonment and abuse by educating as many people as possible about the conditions that lead to the plight of these animals. We do this through our tours of the sanctuary, our school education programs, our 2100 page website that receives viewers from all over the world, by supporting species preservation efforts, and by providing a hands-on experience for interns from around the world.   We hope, by setting an example and teaching about how animals should be treated, that this will carry over into how we humans treat each other as well, and in doing so make the world a better place for all living creatures.   Our Officers and Board of Directors • CEO Chair of BOD and Founder  Carole Baskin • President Jamie Veronica • Vice President & BOD Cathy Mayeski • Secty/ Treasurer  Vernon C. Stairs • Director and Operations Manager  Scott Lope • Director and Coordinator Brian Czarnik The current board of directors will serve until December 31, 2005. This is a poem to draw attention to the problem of smoke pollution caused by agricultural waste burning. Growing up on the Indian plains, I remember that the skies were clear and the nightime always offered lovely views of the heavenly skies. As cities sprawled and developed closer to farmland, things changed. In New Delhi - the (ex) city beautiful, pollution from automobiles, combined with smoke from agrowaste burning, combines to provide a choking smog hanging over the city all winter long. A few years back, I stayed at a 14th century ex-Maharajah's Hill Fort in the Princely state of Alwar, and observed agro burning from a vantage point. My poem - Hill Fort Kesroli - laments the tramsformation of the skies from blue to black, from starlit to smoky, from clear to opaque. It's our scorekeeper Alby.  Sean: [00:02:48] Oh, I  Josh: [00:02:48] just can't  with her. Can I just pull a Mariah? I don't know  Josh: [00:02:51] her.  Kory: [00:02:51] Sure. Cool. Also in Sacramento, practically, within shouting distance of Alby. Which is in fact why we had to separate them in the first place. It's our pal, Adam.  Adam: [00:03:02] Come over and pick up that thing you left, or  Josh: [00:03:05] you can keep it. I don't want it. How  Adam: [00:03:08] come Alby gets all these accomplishments and I'm just the guy who lives close to Alby  Josh: [00:03:14] as I'm the  Kory: [00:03:15] famous one. Sorry. There's only room for Al B's eco on this show. Adam, fresh off of his family's fourth mandatory vacation this quarter so far. Somewhere in some place. Maybe it's Jack. Hey Jack. Hey, mom runs a  tight ship and just be happy. I'm here to mess everything up cause I don't have a segment. So that's what I'm here to do. Hello?  Kory: [00:03:37] How accurate that is on our flight East. Now we'll have an inexplicable three hour layover in Denver where we can visit the host of the modern mouse and assemble podcasts at some local coffee shop, giving the people in line at the Starbucks across the street. The stinkiest of looks it's Josh Taylor. I only  Josh: [00:03:55] give stanky, looks to hosts there on this podcast that refuse to give up their Starbucks. Even though they have horrible experiences at them on a consistent basis. When I've told them almost weekly, they should go somewhere else.  Adam: [00:04:13] But you're not going to name names or anything. I mean,  Josh: [00:04:16] No, I would never say Corey's name out  Kory: [00:04:18] loud. He hasn't had a conversation with anyone, but his wife off of zoom. And about two years, one was the pandemic. The rest is just a general dislike of the human race. Of course, via zoom in Greenville, South Carolina. It's Sean. Hey Sean.  Sean: [00:04:32] I feel like I legally have to point out that I am not just mentally scattered, but I'm scattered smothered covered and chunked. Yes. As is the waffle  Kory: [00:04:40] house way. It's not your headphones. It's regional blackouts. It's Nicki Drake. Hi, Nikki. Hi, I'm  Jen: [00:04:57] here today. I'm glad to be here. Welcome  Kory: [00:04:59] Corey. I hope we get a poem out of you at some point during the show. No pressure. I  can, I can get some  Jen: [00:05:05] haiku's written while  Kory: [00:05:06] we sit here. Jack's family's yacht. It  Nikki: [00:05:10] can be  Jen: [00:05:11] about Jack. It can be about Al B's, ego it's whatever.  Kory: [00:05:15] Just let the muse. Speak, Jen. Thanks again for joining us on theme park, post the game. You're a former Walt Disney world cast member at what roles do  Jen: [00:05:22] I was attractions in the star Wars launch Bay and a character attendant or a blueberry. And that was at any park on any  Kory: [00:05:30] given day from Walt Disney world in 2020 during the pandemic. It's important to us at the Merkel's the game to talk to the actual cast members. What have these layoffs and losing your dream job, how has that affected your life in the time center? I  Jen: [00:05:44] think, at least for me, it was something that was on the horizon. It was something that you saw the boat getting bigger and bigger. So I'm glad that Disney kept us on for as long as they could and took care of us for as long as they could. Before these layoffs inevitably came, I survived most of 2020 with Disney helping me out. I've wanted to work at Disney world since I. Could remember, and I had two really great years with them and the story's not over yet. So I don't know if I could come back in some other role in some other capacity. It was just bittersweet, but I was glad that, like I had that chapter of my story. Do you  Kory: [00:06:22] have a favorite memory from your time as a cast member, Jesse?  Jen: [00:06:25] People's faces light up, seeing these characters in real life and holding a lightsaber and like using the forest, it was just like, I've seen people cry, any range of emotions. Like I've experienced them at  Nikki: [00:06:37] Disney world. I'm crying right now. Kory: [00:06:43] emails with you. You revealed to us a couple of hot takes that I wanted to go through one that the jungle cruise is racist and too. But the trace Caballeros ride is cringy. Yeah. Has that opinion changed now that it also has no animatronics?  Nikki: [00:07:03] It's just  Jen: [00:07:03] outdated. We feel your sister, like, you know, a theme park isn't supposed to be a, a time capsule. Walt really intended it to keep changing, to keep growing. First couple of times I wrote jungle cruise. I was just like, Oh, that, you know the jokes they're, they're cool. And. And everything and they're cheesy and like, yeah, I get it. But it just felt very like through the lens of like colonization and you know, it just, it just felt weird and icky to me, especially like, I dunno, the shrunken head jokes, the getting back to civilization jokes is like, Oh, well the natives ooga booga it just felt very like, Uh, like this, but I get it. People love the jingle cruise. So  Kory: [00:07:47] it's what happens when you wrap some tensile around right. Brian, Jen, we're going to play the parks, pop culture, pop quiz. I'm going to ask you three questions about some recent news and parks, pop culture. If you get too correct, you're going to win a glow in the dark theme park pulse wristband. Are you ready to play? Okay, I'm ready. You sound nervous. That's her secret? The orange County register reports that a new bill proposed by California state assembly members would speed the reopening of Disneyland and universal studios, Hollywood and override the governor's guidelines that have left the state's theme, parks and amusement parks closed for more than 10 months. Who is the governor of California?  Nikki: [00:08:29] She lives in Florida. What are you doing to  Jen: [00:08:32] her?  Kory: [00:08:35] Yeah, that's right. Depending on the day of the pandemic, you're in, he's either the next president. Or is going to be immediately recalled an exile to the fair lawns by raft. But these businesses that run the parks and the assembly members that represent them, say it's time for a framework for reopening safely reached for a comment. A Disney rep says, quote, M I C K E Y, where a freaking mess. He did not in fact say that they should have though. Question to Disney on ice is for many of us, a little glimpse of Disney. When you can't get to the parks, it rolls through town. And once you get over being the only inebriated solo adult in the arena, your blurred vision from the booze or your age makes it almost sort of feel like you're at Disney. You know, well, Disney on ice was in Kansas city. Recently when the health department shut down their production of dream, big due to repeated violations of what.  Nikki: [00:09:32] Not  Jen: [00:09:32] wearing their masks.  Kory: [00:09:35] We're going to take it. It's more severe though. It's repeated violations of COVID-19 restrictions, including. A COVID-19 outbreak among the staff that Disney on ice is parent company Feld entertainment failed to report. This is why we can't have semi nice, almost passable, magical wish thing. That's generous as a big, all right. Theme park fans across the internet are expressing disappointment that the new ride dedicated to Mario kart is not what.  Nikki: [00:10:10] Fast, Kory: [00:10:14] Mario kart. You would think it's a no brainer, but the attraction is actually a slow moving dark ride. Here we go with an AR headset that gives you all of, kind of like the magic, but the reality is Roger rabbit's cartoon. Spin is faster than this X Sox personally. I think it looks cooler without the glasses and banana peels myself. That's just just 50 CC. I'll be how to Jen do on the Park's top culture pop quiz. It's like she  Josh: [00:10:39] read our minds. She got them. All right. Kory: [00:10:46] You can catch Jen at Jen performs on Instagram. Wanted to make sure I plugged that. Jen, will you stick around and play some more games later in the show?  Nikki: [00:10:53] I sure will. Kory: [00:11:06] come back to theme park pulse, the game. Let's welcome. Our next contestant. He is the host of adventures with Parker on YouTube and Ontario, Canada. It's Parker, van Bellingham. Welcome to the show.  Josh: [00:11:16] Hello,  Parker: [00:11:16] or as we say in Canada,  Josh: [00:11:18] sometimes buzzword,  Kory: [00:11:21] well done. We're  Adam: [00:11:22] international  Kory: [00:11:23] now Parker, first question. What happens if we subscribe to adventures by Parker on YouTube? Well,  Parker: [00:11:29] um, a lot of good things. I do a lot of videos about theme parks, but also the outdoors travel local places around my city and just whatever other Synetic against, I happened to  Kory: [00:11:42] get up to. Well, and speaking of your city, you live in Ontario, Canada. How is the whole pandemic thing going there? Are you guys all still masked up and hiding there? Look, we are here. Oh yeah. Like  Parker: [00:11:51] I'm still in lockdown right now. I haven't been outside in a long time, but then again, even if it wasn't a pandemic, would I really go  Sean: [00:11:58] outside  Kory: [00:11:58] all that much? Is it cold  Parker: [00:12:01] right now? Yes. Oh my goodness. It is negative 13 today with Fahrenheit. I believe translates to around 10 it's in the five to 10 range. That  Kory: [00:12:12] is completely  Sean: [00:12:12] unpleasant. It just sounds like you could walk around with a test tube of the Pfizer vaccine. It'd be perfectly fine because it's just so far.  Kory: [00:12:20] Yeah. They probably don't have the problem of expiring vaccines in that climate. It just seems to leave them in the street. I'm on the doorstep. Find  Jen: [00:12:26] the same Bernard, throw them in a barrel around the neck and go door to door with the vaccine.  Kory: [00:12:31] You grew up going to a park called Canada's Wonderland. Can you describe that for the non Canadians and our audience? Because I am visualizing snow and mooses,  Parker: [00:12:41] I mean, it's not too far off. So the park, instead of a castle in its center has a giant mountain called wonder mountain. And it has a few different themed lands. One of which is of course, frontier Canada, which is all about like lumberjacks and Yukon and all that great Canadian stuff. But there's also a little area called medieval fair. There's an area called action zone. It's owned by the same company that owns Cedar point. So it's a, it's a pretty big park actually.  Sean: [00:13:11] I feel like my beard would make me a deity there  Josh: [00:13:17] kinda does that.  Parker: [00:13:18] Definitely the lumberjack  Sean: [00:13:19] aesthetic  Kory: [00:13:21] get a flannel shirt. In addition to your YouTube channel, you're a college student at Western university. What are you studying? I  Parker: [00:13:28] am studying integrated science with environmental  Kory: [00:13:31] science. And what drew  Parker: [00:13:32] you to that? I don't know. I mean, originally my plan was to go through, to be a doctor, but then about halfway through my degree, I decided I really liked the, um, environmental stuff and I liked. You know that whole end of biology, as well as the social sciences and my program kind of offers a bit of everything. So yeah, I decided to jump ships and I'm on a completely different career trajectory, but I'm loving it.  Kory: [00:13:56] Well, good luck with your studies and your YouTube channel. And thank you for joining us this week. We've invited you here to play a game that Adam invented a game in which you must tell truth from fiction. It's called. Show me the lot, Adam,  Adam: [00:14:10] the game where the cast always tells me what a good liar I am. And I don't know how to that's true. When a company is as successful as Disney, it's bound to have its fair share of imitators and knockoffs. Everything from Marty moose at Wally world and national Lampoon's vacation to Sherry bobbins on the Simpsons. Everyone wants to get a slice of Walt's product while staying just. It's different enough to ensure that uncle Bob doesn't take you to court. Sometimes though, these Disney knockoffs are just plain bad, so bad. In fact, they've spawned a whole new genre of movie, the mock Buster. I never even knew that term existed until this week. And I plan it to work it into regular conversation from here on, out for this game, I'm going to read off plot summaries for three movies. Two of them are real mock busters. One of them I completely made up. Listen to these three Synopsys. And tell me if you can show me the light you're ready.  Josh: [00:15:11] I guess I'm going to have to be,  Adam: [00:15:13] that's usually the reaction I get for this game  Kory: [00:15:15] that you are not running. All  Adam: [00:15:18] right. Moving number one, prepare to be transported to the dark bleak, depressing wasteland of new iron city. The city was deserted hundreds of years ago when a corporation run by a greedy evil robot led earth to the brink of annihilation. The world is hopeless, but all is not lost. Meet our cute scrappy robot hero tranq who has been working for generations to clean up the city. It's a boring monotonous life, but the only one he's ever known tranq is about to go on a voyage of discovery. And self-awareness, he is about to learn that he is a very special robot, possibly the only robot in the universe who's got what it takes to save civilization. Don't miss the feel-good smash, hit tiny robots. Kory: [00:16:09] I would see this.  You've already seen it. It's called. Wall-E  Josh: [00:16:15] talking about.  Adam: [00:16:17] I can neither confirm nor deny a moving number two, welcome come to a world where animals live in harmony and work together for a functioning society. For as long as she can remember. Trudy, the ferret has had only one dream to be a firefighter. She graduated from fire Academy with top ranks in her class, but because we all know ferrets can't do anything she's assigned to handicap. Fractions to kids who were playing with firecrackers. All that's about to change though, because Trudy has got the assignment of a lifetime with the help of a con artist Wiley coyote, whose name is definitely not wildly coyote because that's another legal, gray area she's out to prove that ferrets can change the world just as well as any bear bull or horse, you could hope to meet fun for the whole family and a great lesson to boot. Don't miss. Jungle Opolis  Nikki: [00:17:10] Oh my God. I want to be Trudy's best  friend.  Nikki: [00:17:13] She  Josh: [00:17:13] sounds fun.  Oh, Oh, Oh, Oh. Oh. Do some thing, right?  Nikki: [00:17:21] It was horrible.  Kory: [00:17:22] Settle down, Shakira. All right.  Adam: [00:17:24] Third. Final blockbuster. Join Dr. Crumb and Dr. Zoucks and that magical fantastical adventure across many worlds, urban and rural to AME and wild. The doctors have discovered a magical rock that can hypnotize humans. And installed thousands of balloons that will transport a house across land and seed doctors. Crummins Zoucks soon encounter an Intrepid French Explorer named John Pierre, who claims to have discovered a host of wild and exotic animals in the rainforest. So they get in the flying house. Set sail for the Amazon. Soon, it becomes clear that John Pierre doesn't have the best of intentions and the dastardly Frenchman lures the doctor into a cave in order to steal their magic rock in the struggle for the magic rock. The trio accidentally opens a portal into which three beasts escape and are transported to Paris. For some reason, for good measure, there are some kids thrown into the mix. So that the creators of this mock Buster can call it a children's movie with some justification. They don't seem to serve any purpose to the overall narrative, but regardless, anyone who hopes to join the adventures club absolutely must see what's up balloon to the rescue  Kory: [00:18:34] Parker. Two of those are real movies. One of those is a total fabrication made up by Adam. Can you show me the lie?  Josh: [00:18:43] Well, I mean,  Parker: [00:18:44] they all sound great. I'd love to see any of those movies, but I'm going to have to say that the light is the second one. Adam: [00:18:57] little too on the notes. I think, I  Josh: [00:19:00] think that was the one.  Parker: [00:19:01] I want it to be real the most. So,  Nikki: [00:19:04] so of course it has to be fake.  Kory: [00:19:05] Yeah. Maybe  Adam: [00:19:06] I'm losing my edge or maybe Parker's just good at spotting liars, quick note, Wally world and Marty news feature in the most recent episode of the part-time machine, which is in your feed right now. Nice plug Adam. I'm so  Kory: [00:19:19] proud of you. Very nice. Congratulations Parker. Will you hang out and play some more games later in the show? I would love to. back to theme park, post the game. If you'd like to be a contestant call (213) 935-0513 and leave a message. Let's welcome back to the show. Our contestants, Jen and Parker. Welcome back. Good to still be here. Well, we'll see how you feel at the end of the game, because you're here to play with Josh Taylor, Josh, what is it? Find out you are the worst, just  Adam: [00:20:00] like that.  Josh: [00:20:01] I am the worst. Uh, this game is called. I am the map. Typically you would walk into anything park, grab a paper map. And it would guide you to attractions, shops, restaurants, character locations, et cetera. However, a select few of us have all been on a trip with a passholder or a cast member of the Lake who refused to let us grab a map because in their mind, They are the map. So I'm going to give you an increasingly difficult task of deciphering my instructions. And you have to tell me the place in which you should hopefully end up since I have both of you, Jen and Parker, I'm going to give you each three different locations. The person that has the most guest is at the end wins. Hopefully you're both ready. Yeah, I am. The map will Parker. You are a first.  Nikki: [00:20:58] Oh, okay.  Jeez,  Josh: [00:21:01] I'm just  Kory: [00:21:01] scared. Now,  Josh: [00:21:03] Parker, if you're heading down main street USA, you'd take a right turn under the tomorrow land sign, follow the path all the way straight back. Don't take the walkway up to the people mover, but instead, slightly turned to your right and walk toward what round building. Carousel  Parker: [00:21:22] of  Josh: [00:21:22] progress. It is correct, Jen. Yes. John veer to your right. Take the walkway past Canada. Cross the bridge over the waterway and past France. It's actually the next country beyond France. Go in there. You should be able to meet characters from what nineties Disney movie  Nikki: [00:21:47] you said beyond  Josh: [00:21:47] France. Beyond  Kory: [00:21:49] France. Would you like a hint of the government of this country? No longer runs its pavilion Disney does. Is it Morocco?  Jen: [00:21:57] Uh, Jasmine,  Josh: [00:21:59] you can meet Jasmine or Aladdin or genie in Morocco. That is correct Parker. Once you've gone to discovery Island, you'll make a left turn, take the first left pass that travel that path into the land. You'll see some amazing rock formations turn right and walk to the open air building that looks like an old hangar with that roofing, then grab a seat and enjoy what restaurant Tooley canteen correct Nikki: [00:22:36] is the map. Wow. It's the  Parker: [00:22:41] Canadian superpowers,  Josh: [00:22:43] Jen. Once you've gotten to discovery Island veer, right? Take that path to its very end. You'll cross a bridge over the river from there. You'll have to choose to go right or left turn. Right. And then head into the back of the land. That's immediately there on your left. There will be a ride, but don't get on it. Just keep walking straight back. That's where your journey will begin for. What.  Nikki: [00:23:13] Expedition  Josh: [00:23:13] Everest. You, you would be incorrect.  Nikki: [00:23:16] Yeah, I figured close  Josh: [00:23:18] though. It is the Maharajah jungle Trek Parker headed down Hollywood Boulevard. Do not turn onto sunset. Keep going before you get to the Chinese theater. It's on your right-hand side, just behind a little guard. It's a nice little pricey restaurant called what?  Nikki: [00:23:37] This is so unfair.  Parker: [00:23:39] Hollywood and vine.  Josh: [00:23:42] It is not. Oh, it is the Brown Derby. Jen's looking for revenge.  Nikki: [00:23:54] Dare Josh. Give me Adam.  Josh: [00:23:58] Sorry, Jen. I know it's weird, but you cannot actually walk through the castle. But if you veer into Liberty square, there's a little path on your right-hand side. That'll take you back behind the castle when you're on that path. It's the first shop immediately on your right. What shop is that?  Nikki: [00:24:20] Is it the Phil horror  Josh: [00:24:23] magic shop? It is not Kory: [00:24:32] who won this version of IMT. Apparently  Josh: [00:24:36] Parker  Sean: [00:24:36] is the map  Josh: [00:24:38] he got to.  Kory: [00:24:41] Thank you. Yeah, it's okay, Jen, you're going to have a chance to get you revenge. We're playing the eighth dwarf next on theme park pulse, the game. wrap up the show this week, we're going to play another round of the eighth dwarf, which you can play on social media. Using the hashtag eighth dwarf. The whole panel is going to play. Gin is here. Parker is here and Sean who is wearing his, I am the eighth dwarf. T-shirt take it away.  Sean: [00:25:15] All right. Today, I'd like to turn our attention to the online. Disney  Josh: [00:25:20] fandom. No,  Kory: [00:25:23] same, same.  Sean: [00:25:24] Now, as we all know, the seven dwarfs they're designed to represent specific behaviors or personality traits. And at some point, any of us are likely to read or write tweets that are happy dopey, or maybe even a little grumpy, but every now and then there are those people that we just can't categorize as one of the seven doors in their behavior, or in this case, tweets are so outrageous that we fit them into their own category. Called the eighth dwarf. Now I want to begin with a disclaimer. Twitter is awful. And if Twitter is hell, then fittingly does Twitter is the eighth layer of hell. Look it up. I'm not wrong. The dwarves, there are just the worst note that I have changed. The Twitter handles to protect all of you from doom scrolling. These twits. You're welcome. Going in order of amusing to atrocious, let's start with does glow up 2010. This account was so bizarre. I honestly wasn't sure whether they were legit or satire and mixed in with selfies of herself and her girls spelled G U R L Z, because I don't know why. These are kind of cuckoo posts. For example, I have a cousin who works for the government and they told me that Disneyland is opening on February 30th. Hashtag can't wait. I don't think that they have a calendar and then there's this one. I talked to a cast member who told me that Disney is working on rolling tube tunnels for all future parades to enforce appropriate social distancing, hashtag fat. Like I said, I honestly can't tell if what I'm reading is serious parody or just a bot run a muck. Corey, what is your name for does glow up  Kory: [00:27:17] 2010  Adam: [00:27:20] Georgia representative Marjorie Taylor green. Nikki: [00:27:26] perfect. I don't mean  to reduce it. We're using recycled, but I feel like this is definitely Tom coreless his Twitter. I was going to say  Nikki: [00:27:33] thirsty for some  Josh: [00:27:35] attention. Q1 on E. Oh, that's a good one. Horn to Viking. Insurrectionist Jacob chancellor needs  Nikki: [00:27:51] to  Parker: [00:27:52] check their sources, ear. Kory: [00:27:57] I  Adam: [00:27:57] E the entire internet. Yeah.  Jen: [00:28:01] Q  Nikki: [00:28:01] conspiracy Z.  Sean: [00:28:05] It's got good ring to it. Yeah, it does. It does. I think for that one, we're going to go with Jed with cute.  Josh: [00:28:12] All  Sean: [00:28:12] right. So if you haven't looked yet, the eighth layer of hell is actually known to be the home of liars flatterers and false prophets. It is fan went 80, seems to have read that description from Dante and just replied with, hold my beer to wit. In 2019, the country bear Jabber Rebo would be replaced with Bob Hagar's children doing an eight hour remixed version of Oklahoma called OCA hump guns. I'll eat my shoe if I'm wrong in case you're curious. Cut. Your bears is still there. The show hasn't been changed, although I could probably use a touch up here and there. When asked about this fact, his fan went 80 quickly. Yelled squirrel attempted to distract from their myriad mistakes. See the trick with does Twitter. You're never wrong. If you only count the hits and ignore all the misses. But as we say down here in the South, even a stop clock is right. Twice a day is fan one 80. How would you like your shoe cooked also? Do you prefer ketchup or mayonnaise? Corey, what do we call it? Does fan  Kory: [00:29:20] one 80. Rongey right.  Adam: [00:29:25] Deflecting.  Josh: [00:29:26] Ooh.  I like the idea of him just being squirrel. Like he just said his name when he was trying to distract  Josh: [00:29:34] people. So  Nikki: [00:29:35] scrolling,  Jen: [00:29:36] no friends and very bored. He.  Josh: [00:29:39] Oh, must run out of a lot of shoes. He, uh, this is clearly a Texas Senator, Ted Cruz.  Parker: [00:29:50] Gosh. Kids don't do drugs. Nikki: [00:29:57] Good old boy. Sean: [00:30:02] Oh, I think we have to stick with the advice. Kids don't do drugs. They can partner. That's our winner. Thank you, bud.  Kory: [00:30:09] Parker. And Jen, thank you so much for joining us something park. Thanks for having us post the game created, written and produced by me and the panelists you heard on the show today. If you're in a relationship, you might have like a celebrity hall pass. Let's get weird for a second because your Disney feature animation call Pat. Sean.  Sean: [00:31:12] Wait, does that count Pixar? Because it would definitely be missing credible.  Nikki: [00:31:15] Oh,  Adam: [00:31:17] Sean, 100% stole mine. You bastard Josh: [00:31:24] Jack.  Well, I think my 12 year old self needs to go with Roxanne from a  Josh: [00:31:29] goofy movie,  Kory: [00:31:30] Nicki  Jen: [00:31:31] personally, I was going to say Aladdin, but then I started thinking about it and Jeannie can turn into whoever you want.  Nikki: [00:31:38] Right.  Kory: [00:31:40] Spicy Alby. Oh Jesus.  Josh: [00:31:44] Um,  Sean: [00:31:45] he wasn't in a Disney movie,  Josh: [00:31:48] the Eldorado buddy, uh, Flynn. Oh, Lynn Reiner. It's a smolder. Josh Taylor. You could really go with Baymax and he would take care of you after  Kory: [00:32:05] great cuddler.  Josh: [00:32:07] Good hugs. That's gross.  Kory: [00:32:09] No one that knows me is going to be surprised by my answer. I'm going with a Latin, but like vest already half undressed, a Latin from our family to yours. Please be safe. Wear a mask, get a vaccine if you're eligible and join us next time for another all new theme park.  Josh: [00:32:27] Sure. It was Nikki: [00:32:32] a good one too.  Kory: [00:32:34] Oh yeah, that would have been great.

Maharajah’s at Whitby, French royalty at Scarborough and Charlotte Bronte at Bridlington. Dr George Sheeran talks about the, perhaps surprising, history of seaside holidays at the Yorkshire coast. Scarborough is widely recognised as being the first seaside resort in the world. George's talk ranges from Scarborough's beginnings as a spa in the 1600s, through to its, and the wider coasts, heyday in the nineteenth century when royalty, gentry and high-class society frequented Yorkshire's resorts. It is a fascinating tale, that is brought right up to date via the bombardment of Scarborough in the First World War, to Billy Butlin's holiday camp at Filey that perhaps epitomises the changes to holiday making patterns that reach into the 21st century.

On March 29, 1849, the ten-year-old Maharajah of the Punjab handed over to the British East India Company in a formal Act of Submission to Queen Victoria not only swathes of the richest land in India, but also arguably the single most valuable object in the subcontinent: the celebrated Koh-i-Noor diamond. Using original eyewitness accounts and chronicles never before translated into English to craft the first comprehensive and authoritative history of the object, William Dalrymple and Anita Anand trace the true history of the diamond, dispelling the myths that have long surrounded this awe-inspiring jewel.

Kaner and Amby get talking about playing metagaming arseholes, live Diplomacy games online, the variant Colonial Diplomacy, possible variant ideas and get more entertaining after many more drinks This episode is a back-to-back recording again at the Breakfast Creek Hotel. Amby pays homage to Aussie rock band "Midnight Oil" and their lyric about the pub in the song Dreamworld, and their disappoint in the political career of its lead singer (Peter Garrett)  (20 secs) Metagaming arseholes  Kaner gets hot under the collar about his recent experience with metagamers: people who come into a game with a preconceived alliance and will not vary from it (2 mins 30 secs) The game was the very last to be played Known World 901 game at WebDiplomacy (2 mins 45 secs) Kaner explains the difference between metagaming and multi-accounting. He talks about a useful thread on webDip that discusses this (4 mins 45 secs) Kaner blows off some more steam, and then explains what happened to the game after the metagaming was discovered (7 mins 45 secs) Variant and Lab talk Kaner goes a little off topic and discusses a new variant being put together by David E. Cohen, the creator of Known World 901 (8 mins 45 secs) Amby discusses his recent holiday and a surprising spotting of a book written by a David Elliot Cohen - is it the same guy? (9 mins 45 secs) Kaner talks about other great combined maps done by David E. Cohen, combining the Maharajah and Spice Islands maps (11 mins 30 secs) Amby discusses how Flame is setting up Pirates on the Lab so he can correct some of the issues players have raised about the variant (12 mins 45 secs) Kaner talks about how he'd like to see the minor power element of the Versailles variant brought into Pirates (14 mins 15 secs) Mrs Kaner is going soon to France. Kaner discusses his wife's French pronunciation skills (14 mins 30 secs) Amby discusses his other variant creation plans and ideas after reading a Theodore Roosevelt biography that touches on possible conflicts that never occured and how it'd make a fun variant. Basically it would encompass the Venezuelan crisis of 1902-03 where America and Germany could have come to war. Similar potential conflict almost happened over Morocco (15 mins 45 secs) Amby keeps the ball rolling talking about another variant idea after listening to two podcasts (12 Byzantine Rulers and The History of Rome) about the tetrarchy of the Roman Empire when it was governed by four separate emperors. A system that eventually brought them into conflict (19 mins 15 secs) Kaner discusses his interest in the Byzantium Empire and the Black Death (21 mins 50 secs) Back to Metagaming The guys talk about whether an aspect of metagaming is acceptable based on your prior experience against a player (23 mins 50 secs) Kaner talks about players that rub him the wrong way (27 mins) Amby explores a situation whether metagaming could be done in a potentially positive way  (29 mins) Kaner flows off the discussion with a story about his first Diplomacy game against his father and brother (31 mins 40 secs) What the Dr Recommended update - part 2 of the Top 100 at WebDiplomacy The guys follow on from episode 14 and attempt to pronounce player names from #20 to #50 (33 mins 45 secs) Amby discusses how he's been thinking about playing an Ancient Mediterranean game on WebDip (38 mins 30 secs) Live games Amby does another holiday flashback and how with a bit of spare time on his hands, played a live Classic game at webDip (38 mins 55 secs) Amby discusses this was his first ever live game, although he'd tried to get this happening once before on the basis of having a Drunk Diplomacy game (where all players have been drinking) (40 mins) With so many players at webDip its a lot easier to get a live game going, the same with PlayDip (40 mins 50 secs) Amby drew Russia and explains why he likes playing Russia in Classic (and hates Austria and Italy). Kaner also gives his views on which countries he likes playing in Classic (41 mins 20 secs) Amby expected a 45 minute game, but found out that was not the case! (42 mins) He talks about the challenge in a live game of competing real life demands that get in the way of preparing and submitting orders (43 mins) Amby explains he had a lot of fun playing a live game. cspieker as Turkey won with Amby coming second (43 mins 45 secs) The game used the draw size scoring system. Amby explains he has no idea how that works, or sum of squares. The guys talk about how they need to get someone from webDip on to explain it without too much highbrow maths. Amby asks Kaner to organise zulta or another informed webDip person on (45 mins) Back to the live game. Amby explains how he was doing alright as Russia but Turkey was starting to make moves his way. One of the big problems was the amount of CDing in the game, although generally replacements popped up really quickly (46 mins 45 secs) Amby explains his gameplay to avoid attacking Austria and blitzed Scandanavia and started taking SCs off England. Only for Austria to start attacking Amby, quickly followed by Germany doing the same. Amby explains his attempt to send gunboat messages of peace out to England failed. Kaner asks about Germany's rapid rise followed by rapid decline (48 mins 55 secs) Once it became very clear to Amby he wasn't going to win, he set himself some personal goals, including Russia making its way to the Iberian peninsula. The guys then talk about their future plans on playing more live Dip games (51 mins 45 secs) Kaner talks about the importance of hitting the refresh button in live games (55 mins 45 secs) The guys discuss their games Kaner briefly touches on his Sengoku tournament situation (57 mins) Amby similarly discusses briefly his games: Bourse, WW2 and Indians of the Great Lakes (57 mins 30 secs) The Colonial Diplomacy variant Amby quickly segues into a game of Colonial Diplomacy he recently finished (58 mins 40 secs) He describes how he hasn't played it for a couple of years. Kaner says the Trans-Siberian railway and Suez canal rules have been coded into the game (59 mins) The guys give a shout out to those who brought the Colonial variant to life: Peter Hawes for designing the game,  Oliver Auth for the php coding and Tobias Florin for the Trans-Siberian railway and Suez canal coding functionality (1 hour 00 mins 00 secs) They talk about how the special rules work for the Suez canal and the Trans-Siberian railway. That said in the podcast the guys totally forgot to mention the special rule for Hong Kong: it counts as an SC if occupied by any country except China, in which case its considered a non-SC territory (1 hr 1 mins) The guys get increasingly pissy as they move onto drink number six... and it starts showing on Amby's memory of the game (1 hr 03 mins) Amby does however remember his overall strategy playing as Japan and what he was trying to achieve and how he managed relationships with other players (1 hr 4 mins 40 secs) Congrats to Matticus13 who won as China with Amby coming second (1 hr 6 mins) Amby discusses his mid-game plans and how we tried sending gunboat messages of peace to Holland and France (1 hr 7 mins 45 secs) Amby describes how it was a really fun variant and would be interested in playing again as another player (1 hr 9 mins 30 secs) Kaner asks Amby's thoughts on naval vs land based warfare in the variant (1 hr 11 mins) After some initial pissy rambling, Amby reads some of the End of Game statements to explain the players' thoughts on this game and old-man flash backs from Amby about the fall of the Berlin Wall (1 hr 13 mins 15 secs) We then get onto the EoG statement from England, the winner of the game (1 hr 18 mins 15 secs) Amby discusses the fortress nature of Singapore as an SC (1 hr 20 mins) After Kaner's dismal attempt at a joke, Amby slips in a drunken joke or two (1 hr 22 mins 40 secs) After being at the pub for over 4 hours, the guys acknowledge this is a good time to wrap things up before it gets messy, before suggesting listeners send their best jokes by PMing or sending a comment (1 hr 26 mins) Venue: Breakfast Creek Hotel, Brisbane Drinks of choice: Kaner - Carlton Draft and XXXX "off the wood" Amby - Riddoch cabernet sauvignon from the Coonawarra, South Australia Don't forget if you're enjoying the podcast please hop onto iTunes and give us a rating and a review so we can get the Diplomacy message out.
