POPULARITY
I have been reminded over and over again in recent weeks of the preciousness of life as numerous dear friends and family members face loss of loved ones and their own life-altering health crises. This got me to thinking about how much my mentors have shaped my life. So with this latest episode I inaugurate a new Countermelody series entitled “Honor Your Mentors.” I have already posted numerous times on the podcast about my beloved teacher John Wustman. This coming July my friend and colleague Chanda VanderHart's monumental book Accompaniment in America: Contextualizing Collaborative Piano, co-authored with Kathleen Kelly and Elvia Puccinelli, will be published by Routledge. Chanda has put together an astonishing digital archive featuring a wealth of material related to the book: https://accompanimentinamerica.website/index.html Included in this material is an interview I did with Chanda about Mr. Wustman. Chanda has given me permission to include that interview on my podcast. This is supplemented by a sampling of (mostly) studio recordings of John featuring, among others, Régine Crespin, Carlo Bergonzi, Brigitte Fassbaender, Luciano Pavarotti, and Irina Arkhipova: truly an astonishing feast for the ears! Additionally, I was enormously saddened last week to read of the death of Joan Caplan, my first serious voice teacher in New York, and a phenomenal singer in her own right. Joan also remained a close friend through the years. In recent years she had been living at the Actors Fund Home in Englewood, New Jersey. I was able to visit her there last summer and had intended to go see her again later this month. Alas, that can no longer happen, but I will also be featuring Joan in an upcoming episode in the “Honor Your Mentors” series. In her memory today, I present her in a scintillating recording of Orsini's Brindisi from Donizetti's Lucrezia Borgia. Finally, though I'm sure no one needs to be reminded of this, please, my dears, tell all those you love how much they mean to you; don't wait until their funerals to give them their flowers! Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. By clicking on the following link (https://linktr.ee/CountermelodyPodcast) you can find the dedicated Countermelody website which contains additional content including artist photos and episode setlists. The link will also take you to Countermelody's Patreon page, where you can pledge your monthly or yearly support at whatever level you can afford.

In the realm of pediatrics, can a child's ZIP code be a stronger predictor of health outcomes than their genetic code? Dr. Lia Gaggino examines this critical question alongside pediatric residents Dr. Nicole Hickman and Dr. Kathleen Kelly. These passionate advocates for health equity discuss their innovative work integrating social influencers of health into pediatric residency programs and primary care practices. They address the complexities of tackling food insecurity, housing instability, and other social influencers of health that significantly impact children's well-being. Drs. Hickman and Kelly provide practical strategies for screening patients and implementing community resource referral systems, showcasing how targeted interventions can yield substantial improvements in care. Their groundbreaking approach to the medical education curriculum and inpatient systems interventions aims to reduce healthcare inequities. Their dedication to advocacy and addressing social determinants in pediatric residency will inspire listeners to become catalysts for change in pediatric healthcare. [00:33 -14:46] The Role of Social Influencers of Health in Pediatric CareSocial influencers, such as access to healthcare, education, and neighborhood environment, significantly affect children's health outcomes.Pediatricians must recognize the importance of community context, economic stability, and access to quality resources in shaping child health.Families living in food deserts face challenges in accessing nutritious foods, affecting children's overall health and development.Addressing social influencers can help mitigate health disparities, offering opportunities for intervention to improve pediatric health.[14:47 - 24:08] Addressing Structural Racism and Intersectionality in Pediatric Health OutcomesStructural racism, reinforced through housing, education, and healthcare systems, significantly affects health outcomes, particularly in marginalized communities. In Chicago, a stark 30-year difference in life expectancy exists between predominantly white and Black neighborhoods, exemplifying the impact of systemic discrimination.Pediatric care must acknowledge and address the broader societal factors, like redlining and economic disinvestment, that contribute to health inequities.Developing pediatric training to address structural racism is critical for reducing the health gaps caused by these deeply rooted societal factors.[24:09 -32:16] Trauma-Informed Approaches in Pediatric Social Health ScreeningsUsing sensitive language during screenings encourages trust, which helps families feel comfortable discussing social challenges over time.Normalizing the screening process by introducing it as a routine part of every patient encounter helps build rapport and reduce stigma.Pediatricians should reassure families that resources are available to help address needs identified during screenings, reinforcing that support is ongoing.Offering social work support and providing a list of community resources upfront can prepare families for future needs, even if they don't require immediate assistance(pm03).[32:17 - 43:44] Pediatric Screening Tools for Addressing Social Determinants of HealthThe hospital system uses a comprehensive screening questionnaire that includes housing insecurity, food insecurity, and physical violence. The tool incorporates questions related to gun access in the home, combining different social screeners and abuse screeners.Pediatricians can track outcomes using a closed-loop referral system, ensuring patients receive the resources they need.Screening tools are integrated...

Come along as we meet Kathleen Kelly, a woman who owns her dead mother's bookstore, a brownstone (somehow), and has a boyfriend who is really gonna love Twitter one day. Her world gets rocked when Joe Fox, a multimillionaire, decides to open up a mega bookstore across the street from her shop. What the two don't know is that they've been AOL emailing and falling for each other this entire time. That would be cute if it ended there wouldn't it? WRONG! Joe forces Kathleen's store to go out of business, everybody breaks up with their boyfriend/girlfriend, and Joe realizes he's been emailing Kathleen - keeps it a secret from her - and then does psychological warfare to force her to hang out with him/start to like him AND SOMEHOW IT WORKS! ...We know. It sounds like a horror movie. But nope! It's a rom-com! Yay! Released in 1998, it stars Meg Ryan, Tom Hanks, Greg Kinnear, Parker Posey, Jean Stapleton, Steve Zahn, Heather Burns, and Dave Chappelle.

When I started this podcast, it was a way for me to just get to chat about books, especially 5-star books) with anyone who would listen. I pictured occasional interviews with authors or reader chats (still don't have any of those... sigh), but I wanted a place to just gush about all the bookness. Well, interviews have taken over quite a bit, but I keep pushing back a bit because I still want to talk about the books I loved and why I loved them. I've had some great 5-star reads this year--more than any other year, I think. And so I decided to start a "series" of episodes where I revisit some of the books from author interviews and give my double coppers on them. The first four--total 5-star books, but I doubt they always will be. Maybe so, though. Christian fiction gets better every year. EEEP! Just the way it should be. Note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. A Look Back at Four 5-Star Reads from This Year's Interviews I just want to point out that these are not the ONLY reads from this year's interviews. There have been more before and after these, but I realized too late that I chose the first four that I'd read that followed my "Favorites of 2022 so far" episode. The interview JUST before that is another one I need to do. So take these out of order just because they're great books and you need to know more about them! First up: Janyre Tromp (Episode 129) Shadows in the Mind's Eye Post WWII, a soldier returns home to find the corrupt town that he left is even more corrupt than before. Add to that PTSD the twists and turns, the making me doubt... it's a wonderful debut novel (one of TWO on this list, btw!) One thing I didn't mention in the interview was the brilliant DEEP POV of the characters. It was definitely an un-putdownable book. I cheated on "how I usually read books" and um... yeah. Read a few more a time or two. If you'd like to read my review, you can find it HERE on Goodreads. After that, I did a "How I choose five-star books" bit so you'd understand how I pick a 5-star read." Next: Danielle Grandinetti (Episode 131) As Silent as the Night While Episode 131 focused on A Strike to the Heart, which I haven't read yet, Danielle Grandinetti also discussed her Christmas novella As Silent as the Night. Mob-controlled Chicago in the 1930s is a dangerous place for many reasons, and for Lucia--terrifying ones. This is Christmas fiction "with a bite." Suspense, crime, romance... it's got it all and in a novella that doesn't feel rushed (although I did not want it to end. Nope. Nope. My Goodreads review. Then came Liz Tolsma (Episode 142) A Promise Engraved I've loved all (I think) the Doors to the Past split-time novels that I've read, and this was definitely my favorite. The Alamo isn't always my favorite story, but Liz Tolsma really did a phenomenal job writing both time periods. Her contemporary story focuses on border patrol and the terrible position the workers are put in as well as how hard it is for all persons involved. But the historical part... it completely overtook things. One thing I thought was great was that both stories were complete in themselves but all the richer by adding the element that tied them together. You can read my Goodreads review HERE. Sara Brunsvold (Episode 145) The Extraordinary Deaths of Mrs. Kip So far, I think this is my #1 book of the year--the second 5-star DEBUT novel so far. I'm so impressed by the depth and richness of this story. Mrs. Kip was an amazing woman, and her life inspires readers in amazing ways. I'm not a crier. Rarely cry, actually. But I actually teared up a few times in this book, which I think is pretty impressive. In the words of Kathleen Kelly's mother (from You've Got Mail), "Read it with a box of Kleenex." To read my Goodreads review HERE. I suggested that for more information about Mrs. Kip and the other books I've mentioned, you visit Avid Readers of Christian Fiction on Facebook. Kathleen Kelly was a daughter, sister, aunt, and friend. She grew up in some troublesome circumstances, but by the time she was 12 she was very independent, yet of course still loved her time with friends. We start a new series on the podcast today---Reading Like Kathleen Kelly. Growing up, writer/producer Ali Schouten-Seeks saw herself as a total Kathleen Kelly (that is, Meg Ryan's quirky character from YOU'VE GOT MAIL). But as she got older, she began to learn the value of owning even those quirks that some would have women tamp down…much like Sally Albright in WHEN HARRY MET SALLY (also Meg Ryan, of course). Only on FEELING SEEN does rom-com comp lit meet self discovery. Enjoy! Then, Jordan embraces the vibe shift to tell you all about the new Korean film THE WITCH: PART 2. Recognized by Opera News as “one of the finest singers of his generation,” American bass-baritone Ryan McKinny has earned his reputation as an artist with something to say. His relentless curiosity informs riveting character portrayals and beautifully crafted performances, reminding audiences of their shared humanity with characters on stage and screen. This season, McKinny brings his agile stage presence and comedic skill to performances of Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro on both U.S. coasts. He first appears as the titular Figaro in a Richard Eyre production at New York City's Metropolitan Opera, with an all-star cast that includes Golda Schultz, Lucy Crowe, Isabel Leonard, and Adam Plachetka. He then makes his Seattle Opera debut reprising the role in a Peter Kazaras production, under the baton of Alevtina Ioffe. In between productions – and coasts – McKinny joins collaborative pianist Kathleen Kelly for a recital at the Lied Center of Kansas, featuring works by Schumann, Debussy, Mahler, and Kurt Weill. In summer 2022, he joins the Boston Symphony at Tanglewood as the title character in Don Giovanni, with Andris Nelsons on the podium. He concludes the season with the Philadelphia Orchestra at Saratoga Performing Arts Center, appearing as soloist in Beethoven's Ninth Symphony with conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin. Offstage, McKinny continues to adapt the beauty of his art form to the film screen, collaborating on a documentary with Jamie Barton and Stephanie Blythe. Through his work with Helio Arts, he commissions artists to write, direct, and film original stories, leveraging his personal power to help elevate new voices and visions in the classical performing arts world. During the pandemic, he has partnered with artists like J'Nai Bridges, Russell Thomas, John Holiday, and Julia Bullock to create stunning and innovative performances for streaming audiences at Dallas Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, On Site Opera, and the Glimmerglass Festival. McKinny's recent debut as Joseph De Rocher in Jake Heggie and Terrence McNally's Dead Man Walking at Lyric Opera of Chicago was hailed by the Chicago Tribune as an “an indelible performance...an acting tour de force buttressed by a warmly inviting voice.” He has also appeared as the title character in Don Giovanni (Washington National Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Houston Grand Opera), Escamillo in Carmen (Semperoper Dresden, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Staatsoper Hamburg, Houston Grand Opera), and Mozart's Figaro (Washington National Opera, Wolf Trap Opera, Houston Grand Opera). McKinny made a critically acclaimed Bayreuth Festival debut as Amfortas in Parsifal, a role he has performed around the world, including appearances at Argentina's Teatro Cólon, Deutsche Oper am Rhein, and Dutch National Opera. Other Wagnerian roles include Kurwenal in Tristan und Isolde (Deutsche Oper Berlin, Houston Grand Opera, Canadian Opera Company), Biterolf in Tannhäuser and Kothner in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, both at the Metropolitan Opera, Wotan in Opéra de Montréal's Das Rheingold, Donner/Gunther in Wagner's Ring cycle (Washington National Opera, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Houston Grand Opera), and the titular Dutchman in Der fliegende Holländer (Staatsoper Hamburg, Milwaukee Symphony, Glimmerglass Festival, Hawaii Opera Theater). McKinny is a frequent guest artist at Los Angeles Opera, where he has sung Count Alamaviva in Le nozze di Figaro, Don Basilio in Il barbiere di Siviglia, and Stanley Kowalski in Previn's A Streetcar Named Desire, opposite Renée Fleming as Blanche DuBois, and at Santa Fe Opera, where he has appeared as Jochanaan in Salome and Oppenheimer in Doctor Atomic. An alumnus of the Houston Grand Opera Studio, Mr. McKinny has made a number of important role debuts on the HGO mainstage, including the iconic title roles of Don Giovanni and Rigoletto. McKinny is a long-time artistic collaborator of composer John Adams and director Peter Sellars, having appeared in Sellars productions of Adams' Girls of the Golden West (San Francisco Opera, Dutch National Opera) and Doctor Atomic (Santa Fe Opera), in addition to Adams' Nixon in China with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. He has also performed under Sellars' direction in Stravinsky's Oedipus Rex (Sydney Festival), Tristan und Isolde (Canadian Opera Company), and Shostakovich's Orango with the London Philharmonia and Los Angeles Philharmonic, the latter comprising Esa-Pekka Salonen's final concerts as music director. Other recent orchestral engagements include Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 and a double bill of Michael Tilson Thomas' Rilke Songs and Mahler's Des Knaben Wunderhorn with San Francisco Symphony, Mahler's Symphony No. 8 and Bernstein's Mass with Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 with Cleveland Orchestra and National Symphony, Rossini's Stabat Mater at Grant Park Music Festival, Britten's War Requiem with Marin Alsop and Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and Oedipus Rex with Chicago Symphony. McKinny benefited from early educational opportunities at the Aspen Music Festival, where he sang his first performance of Winterreise accompanied on the piano by Richard Bado, and at the Wolf Trap Opera Company, where he sang Barone di Kelbar in Verdi's Un giorno di regno, Le Gouverneur in Rossini's Le comte Ory and Figaro in Le nozze di Figaro. Important Events May 19, 1834 Today is the birthday of the daring self-taught American botanist Catherine Furbish. Kate is remembered for her life-long work collecting, classifying, and illustrating the flora of the great state of Maine. Kate spent six decades crisscrossing her home state. Her delicate, beautiful, and simple botanical art charms gardeners still today. Kate grew up in an upper-middle-class home. She attended private school and studied drawing as a child. By the time she was thirty, she had combined her love for flowers and drawing and embarked on a goal of collecting, cataloging, and drawing all the native flora of Maine. During Kate’s lifetime, Maine was still a rugged and wild place. Her amateur eagerness to explore the forests and wildernesses of Maine put her in direct contrast to the women of her time. Her exemplary fieldwork drew respect from her male counterparts - many of whom worked at the major Universities or scientific centers across the country. In 1881, after getting a plant named for her, Kate wrote to Sereno Watson at Harvard to acknowledge the honor, saying, “Were it not for the fact that I can find no plants named for a female botanist in your manual, I should object to “Pedicularis Furbishae”... But as a new species is rarely found in New England and few plants are named for women, it pleases me.” In 1895, Kate helped found the Josselyn Botanical Society of Maine. In 1925, her friend “Joss” (Louise Coborn) described Kate as a botanist in her sixties: “I can see her as I saw her then — a little woman with uplifted head already turned gray, in animated talk, or with bowed face using her keen eyes along a forest trail, or up a mountain path. She had the sort of eyes that were made for seeing, and nothing escaped the swift circle of her glance. Her feet were as untiring as her eyes, and she could out-last many a younger woman on a cliff-side climb or river-bank scramble.” On September 16, 1978, the New Castle News out of New Castle, PA, shared an article written by Mike Finsilber with a headline that read: Exhibit Depicts Female Scientists. Here’s an excerpt: "When curator Deborah Warner suggested to her superiors at the Smithsonian Institution that she put together an exhibit documenting the accomplishments of American women in science in the 19th century, her superiors were skeptical. Women scientists in the 19th century? Would there be enough of them to fill an exhibit? They doubted it. Ms. Warner didn’t. Yesterday her display opened in the Museum of History and Technology, telling of, among others: Kate Furbish, the botanist who discovered the now-famous Furbish Lousewort. It is now famous because it is endangered and for a time threatened to block construction of the Lincoln-Dickey Dam in Maine." May 19, 1898 Today is the birthday of the woman known as the First Lady of Michigan State Parks and Natural Areas and the “Mother” of Michigan State Parks system, Emma Genevieve Gillette, who was born in Lansing. Genevieve learned to love nature from her dad. He would take her into the woods in the spring to see arbutus flowering and the brook running. Genevieve recounted how he would kneel down by the brook and ask, “Can you hear what it is saying? It’s talking to us.” In 1920, Genevieve was the only woman to be part of the very first landscape architecture class to graduate from the Michigan Agricultural College. She ended up going to work for the great Landscape Architect Jens Jensen, known as the “Dean of Landscape Architects,” and would become a trusted mentor and lifelong friend to Genevieve. In terms of a role model, Jens was perfect for Genevieve; he was an early pioneer in the conservation movement, used art as activism, and was generally ahead of his time. Jens once famously said, “Trees are much like human beings and enjoy each other's company. Only a few love to be alone.” A contemporary of Frank Lloyd Wright, Jens was also a maker of public parks and spaces. Genevieve later said Jens “pestered her” to start a state park system in Michigan. Genevieve befriended the Michigan Parks Chief Peter J. Hoffmaster, who was one of her old college classmates. Her sincere alliances with state officials helped her garner support to serve as the president of the Michigan Park Association. Genevieve boosted public support and funding for more than 200,000 acres of Michigan’s state and national parks during her tenure, including the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. In the mid-1960s, Genevieve was asked to serve on President Lyndon Johnson’s Committee on Recreation and Natural Beauty. It was the honor of her career. May 19, 1864 Today is the anniversary of the death of the American novelist and short-story writer Nathaniel Hawthorne. In 1843, Nathaniel wrote a crazy short story about a mad scientist who became obsessed with removing his wife, Georgiana’s birthmark. He decides to repurpose a remedy he created to remove blotches from the leaves of his geraniums. In the end, as his wife drinks the mixture, her birthmark does indeed fade away but so does her life force, and she dies a perfect, unblemished woman. Unearthed Words Like their mother, Honor Sparrow, dead now for twenty-some years- gone on the very day her youngest daughter, Impatiens, arrived - the sisters had all green thumbs. It was ordained, really. They had each been named after a botanical, mostly flowers, and as their mother kept producing girls, the names became slightly ridiculous. But Honor was a keen gardener and in darkest winter, calling her daughter's names reminded her that spring would come again. For months after her death, the older girls hated their names and all they recalled for them. By the time they founded the Sparrow Sisters Nursery, though, each thoroughly embraced their names as the sign they were. ― Ellen Herrick, American publishing executive and author, The Sparrow Sisters Grow That Garden Library Organic Gardening for Everyone by Cali Kim This book came out in 2019, and the subtitle is Homegrown Vegetables Made Easy - No Experience Required! In this book, Kim shows you just how easy it is to grow healthy vegetables at home - something she started doing in 2012. At the time, Kim approached her desire to garden in a very unique and compelling way: she crowdsourced it! After launching a YouTube channel under the name "CaliKim" (a nod to her California residency) and asking for help from everyday gardeners, Kim started gardening. When questions or problems popped up, Kim found support, advice, information, and connection from her viewers and subscribers. Gradually, she learned to garden, and her garden managed to survive and thrive even under the hot, harsh conditions of the California climate. Kim’s book is her way of giving back the gardening wisdom she’s accumulated. Now, almost a decade later, Kim answers more garden questions than she asks, and she’s here to help grow more gardeners through her lovely book. With Kim’s step-by-step encouragement, you’ll realize that anyone can garden and overcome any hesitations that gardening is too hard, intimidating, or time-consuming. With a busy family of her own, she shares her own inspirational story of balancing the garden's demands alongside the demands of a modern, busy California family. Kim offers friendly and practical advice that celebrates the joy of gardening. She offers her best advice on her passion for organic vegetable gardening. This book is 160 pages of garden encouragement, wisdom, and enthusiasm from a California mom who became a passionate modern organic gardener over the past decade. You can get a copy of Organic Gardening for Everyone by Cali Kim and support the show using the Amazon Link in today's Show Notes for around $5 Today’s Botanic Spark Reviving the little botanic spark in your heart May 19, 1941 Today is the birthday of the New York director and screenwriter Nora Ephron. Nora was the writer of many favorite movies: When Harry Met Sally (1989), Sleepless in Seattle (1993), and You've Got Mail (1998). In You’ve Got Mail, Nora wrote one of the most iconic lines about daisies in a scene between the two main characters: Kathleen and Joe. In the movie, Kathleen Kelly looks at the vase of daisies that Joe sets on the table beside her, and she says, I love daisies. And then, Joe Fox replies: You told me. Kathleen ignores the clue in Joe’s remark. Now, had she noticed what he just said, she’d realize that he purposefully bought her the daisies because he remembered their very first meeting at her bookstore. During his visit with Annabelle and Matthew, she tells the kids about her handkerchief. (Since they didn’t know what a handkerchief was!) Kathleen tells the kids, “My mother embroidered this for me - [with] my initials and a daisy because daisies are my favorite flower.” But Kathleen misses Joe’s comment because he had just set the flowers on the table beside her. At that moment, Kathleen gets distracted by the daisies and caught up in the beauty of the flowers. She offhandedly remarks, “They’re so friendly. Don’t you think daisies are the friendliest flower?” At this comment, Joe Fox looks to the side (because at this point he realizes she’s missed the meaning of his earlier comment), and then he simply answers her with, “I do.” Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener. And remember: "For a happy, healthy life, garden every day."

A lot of what drives the world we live in is communication and it is as much about what is behind the words as it is about the words themselves, if not more so. Whether you’re in art or business or both, there is a constant need to be curious about everything that you don’t know, things that represent a bigger world than what we can ever hope to wrap our heads around. These are some of the most important takeaways from this conversation between Elizabeth Bachman and Kathleen Kelly, a pianist, opera coach, conductor, teacher and writer. Kathleen is the first American named as Director of Musical Studies at the Vienna State Opera. Having worked in such an international setting, her grasp on the topics discussed in this podcast is phenomenal. Join in as they delve into everything from philosophy, history, music and communication, gender perception and the various aspects of communication and how we can use it to move ahead in our lives and our society.
There are so many stereotypes around business and art that would have us say that they are two separate things. For one, there is this pervasive image of the “broke artist” that implies that artists don’t have as much acumen and savvy for business as their non-artistic counterparts. As someone has been a working artist for many years, Elizabeth Bachman knows that this cannot be further from the truth. Art is a business. You get paid for your creativity, but a lot of times, you have to deliver under budget and on time. There is so much that the business world can learn from the arts. With this in mind, Elizabeth introduces The Relationship between Business and Art, a special miniseries within the show that explores the relationship within business and art from the point of view of some big and up-and-coming names in the performing arts, as well as the amazing geniuses behind the curtains. Her guest list for this mini series will include such names as J’Nai Bridges, Lawrence Brownlee, Christine Goerke, Valerie Day, Steven White, Kathleen Kelly, Darren Woods, Filippo Petteni, Colleen Bonniol and Bob Bonniol.
This week, we watched Nora Ephron’s beloved romcom classic, You’ve Got Mail as well as the lesser known (by modern generations) 1940 Ernst Lubitch film, The Shop Around the Corner. Did you recognize that name? Yep! The Shop Around the Corner is the name of Kathleen Kelly’s magical children’s bookstore in You’ve Got Mail. (Nice nod, Nora.) Johnathon was pleasantly surprised by the old movie and if you get the chance to watch it, you’ll find it Cracker Jack full of witty banter and colorful characters (looking at you, Pepi). And if you haven’t seen You’ve Got Mail in a few years, you owe yourself a rewatch.

I consider this a public service announcement! Every time I see another small business in my community shut its doors, I think about the 1998 modern classic, You’ve Got Mail. Remember when Meg Ryan's character, Kathleen Kelly, was forced to close The Shop Around the Corner because of corporate takeover? Well, Instagram wasn't around in 1998 and small business owners have the power of Instagram to reach potential customers. But many brands are doing it wrong! Take a listen for some amazing tips small businesses can apply to grow on Instagram. Join the Making the Brand Groupies Facebook Group!

You've Got Mail was released into theaters on December 18, 1998, on a budget of $65 million and made $250.8 million at the box office. Directed by Nora Ephron who also directed When Harry Met Sally (1989) and Sleepless in Seattle (1993). Nora Ephron also produced this film and co-wrote the screenplay with her sister Delia Ephron. This movie is based on the play Parfumerie by Miklós László. You've Got Mail CastTom Hanks as Joe FoxMeg Ryan as Kathleen KellyParker Posey as Patricia EdenJean Stapleton as Birdie ConradGreg Kinnear as Frank NavaskySteve Zahn as George PappasHeather Burns as Christina PlutzkerDave Chappelle as Kevin Jackson You've Got Mail VHS TrailersYou've Got Mail Soundtrack promo You've Got Mail PlotBefore the movie begins, we are treated to an astonishing 90's opening credits of dial-up internet sounds and early 3D rendering that made my heart swell with joy (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m1qh1Am0h6o). Kathleen Kelly is involved with Frank Navasky, a leftist newspaper writer for The New York Observer who is always in search of an opportunity to write for the underdog. While Frank is devoted to his typewriter, Kathleen prefers her laptop and logging into her AOL email account. Using the screen name "Shopgirl," she reads an email from "NY152", the screen name of Joe Fox, whom she first met in an "over-30s" chatroom. As her voice narrates her reading of the email, she reveals the boundaries of the online relationship: no specifics, including no names, career or class information, or family connections. These opening scenes are an overload of 90's sounds from the internet loading to the AOL robot voice of "You've Got Mail." Joe belongs to the Fox family that runs Fox Books a chain of mega-bookstores. Kathleen runs the independent bookstore The Shop Around The Corner that her mother ran before her. The two are shown passing each other on their separate ways to work, revealing that they visit the same neighborhoods in the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Joe arrives at work, supervising the opening of a new Fox Books in New York City with the help of his best friend, branch manager Kevin. Kathleen and her three store assistants, George, Aunt Birdie, and Christina, open up her small shop that morning. Following a day with his 11-year-old aunt Annabel and 4-year-old half-brother Matthew, Joe enters Kathleen's store to let his younger relatives experience story time. Joe and Kathleen have a conversation that shows Kathleen's fears about the Fox Books store opening around the corner. He withholds his last name and makes a sharp exit with the children. At a publishing party for New York book business people later that week, Joe and Kathleen meet again where Kathleen discovers Joe's true identity. She accuses him of deception and spying, while he responds by disparaging her bookstore. The Shop Around the Corner slowly goes out of business. Kathleen enters Fox Books to discover the store is friendly and relaxed yet without the same dedication to or knowledge of children's books as her shop. Her employees move on: Christina goes job hunting, George gets a job at the children's department at the Fox Books store, and Birdie retires. When the two finally decide to meet, Joe discovers with whom he has been corresponding. At first, he chooses not to meet her but then joins her without revealing his online identity, leading them to argue once more. Joe later resumes the messages, apologizes, and promises to tell her why he stood her up eventually. After both quietly break up with their significant others, Joe realizes his feelings towards Kathleen and begins building a face-to-face relationship, still keeping his online identity a secret. He plans a meeting between his online persona and her, but just before she is to meet her online friend, Joe reveals his feelings for her. When she is waiting for "NY152" at the meeting spot, she sees Joe and his dog, realizing he was "NY152" the whole time. The most sublime comment I have ever heard from an audition panel was, “Wow. She really came to play…” Simply put, the audition is the best of your preparation actualized. The better the preparation – the better the audition. It is in your best interest to do as many auditions as possible to not only ‘up your averages‘ but to hone your skills in this specific craft. Before you go slogging through auditions willy-nilly, take this challenge to help make more of your auditions successful. Your Studio Class challenge today is to take that room by storm and audition like you mean it! Jambeaux, everyone!!! Welcome to another episode of the Magic Our Way podcast. We appreciate your listening to our show and we hope it brings a smile to your face. We also appreciate your feedback and are committed to listening to our audience. To join them as co-hosts, Kevin and Danny welcome back Lee of Magical Moments Vacations and Eli of www.ivorycomics.com. Please note: the Magic Our Way Podcast is not affiliated with the Walt Disney Company or its entities. All opinions expressed therein are solely those of the Magic Our Way podcast. No animals were harmed in the making of this podcast. In Guest Services, we recognize Kathleen Kelly, Zeke and Rachel from the Behind the Magic Podcast, Listener X, Jeni Marie Caillouet, Lisa Mundy, Chief Woo Woo (@FishSeanWoo), Mad Hatter Chatter, and Steve Mathers. In the Queue, we discuss the Hatbox Ghost in Disneyland, Jock’s Indiana Jones themed lounge in Disney Springs, and Universal’s announcement that Nintendo is coming to their parks. In the Hub, we play a game of Would You Rather. In case you are not familiar with this game, Would You Rather is a conversation or party game that poses a dilemma in the form of a question beginning with "would you rather". We will be taking a Disney approach to this and we invite y’all to play at home with us. Let us know what choice you would have made and why. Send it in to magicourway@gmail.com. Listen to this show and find out how we came up with Mola Ram’s Heartburn Café or Sala’s Café. Our creativity goes wild as Danny comes up with the Marcus Brody Restaurant, a place where you get lost on your own restaurant. #cricketlivesmatter For Would You Rather, check out the following dilemmas. Would You Rather (heretofore known as WYR) marry Ursula or the old lady from Snow White? WYR have Pinocchio’s nose or Dumbo’s ears? WYR take on Aladdin’s Genie for Jasmine’s affections or take on the Hulk for Black Widow’s affections? WYR have Huey, Dewey, and Louie as your kids or Ursula and Maleficent as your adoptive parents? WYR have a weekend in Tokyo Disneyland or a week in one of the U.S.A. Disney Parks? Over the span of a day, WYR have Guano Joe as your personal tour guide at the Animal Kingdom or spend a day with Stacey J. Aswad at the Magic Kingdom? Over the span of a day, would you rather have Thor’s hammer or Captain America’s shield? WYR have Fixit Felix Jr.’s hammer or the Magic Carpet from Aladdin? WYR streak the old lobby or the new lobby of the Polynesian Village Resort? WYR go without sex for a whole year or not go to a Disney park for five years? And, there are many more dilemmas to discuss. This show is for the long haul and is guaranteed to bring a lot of entertainment to your life. As always, we promise to give the Disney fan a voice and this show is no exception! If you have any thoughts, please send them over. If you want to make a custom show intro and want to be forever immortalized on MOW, send that in too. Kathy Kelly's passion for Disney World and helping others with Autism and other special needs navigate the parks sparked Special Mouse blog and podcast! Connect with Kathy Kelly of Special Mouse! Special Mouse @KathKellyRN I am so fortunate to be able to have Kathleen Kelly of Special Mouse to talk about how she got started. As well as why her message of Disney World being for everybody, is so important to her. I want to help Kathly by supporting her Kickstarter Campaign to develop her first book all about making Disney World more magical for families dealing with Autism. I am proud to donate $40 to her cause, and I hope you are able to as well. I personally do not have family members with Autism, but I get asked a lot to help others plan their vacations to Disney World, and I figured having the book in my arsenal of advice would be very valuable. Please watch the video below! :) More about Special Mouse Podcast For most Disney fans, podcasts are a rich source of both information and entertainment. What is a podcast? Think of it like an online, on-demand radio show. There are many podcasts that discuss just about everything Disney – news & rumors, theme park history, runDisney events , Disney weddings – you name it! But, until today, no one has devoted a show to the interests and concerns of guests with special needs and health issues. The Special Mouse Podcast was created to fill that void. In 2012 attendance for Walt Disney Attractions worldwide was over 126 million. That's a lot of people! Now, think of all those guests who must have had some sort of special need that affected their vacation experience – not just those with mobility issues – but those living with developmental disabilities, heart conditions, vision or hearing loss, food allergies – the list is endless! Fortunately, theDisney Parks and the Disney Cruise line are second to none when it comes to hospitality, inclusiveness and customer service. Nevertheless, when traveling with health issues and special needs it's natural to have a host of questions and concerns. Some might even worry that they would be a burden to their families or that their challenges would be too much trouble to manage while on vacation. At one time I felt the same way. Our family first visited Walt Disney World in 2003. I was excited but also somewhat apprehensive. Our youngest child had recently been diagnosed with classic regressive Autism and had numerous sensory, communication and behavioral issues. After a good deal of preparation, our Disney experience was nothing short of magical! Since then we have returned again and again because there is no other vacation destination that better suits the particular needs of our family. In 2006 I discovered a vibrant Disney online community and began to participate in several message boards, namely the Trip Report forum on DISboards where I wrote about our family's Adventures in Autism. There I met a great number of people who shared a similar love of Walt Disney World, many of whom I eventually met in person and am friends with to this day! I started blogging about Disney and Autism in November, 2009 (Disney-Lovin' Spectrum Mom) and began writing a special-needs column for WDW Fan Zone in January of 2011 (Faces in the Queue). Over the years I've developed numerous friendships and a passion for helping others discover that Disney is both willing and able to accommodate the special-needs traveler. It is my sincere hope that this podcast will be a source of both information and inspiration to those who live with and/or care for those with special needs. You deserve a vacation! Here at Special Mouse we firmly believe that The Magic is for Everyone. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/522828044/walt-disney-world-with-autism-a-special-needs-guid Episode 170
