Today on the sisterhood of Sweat, I'm talking to DJ Caruso. Born in Norwalk, Connecticut, Caruso came west to play tennis and study Television Production at Pepperdine University. Interned at Disney Studios in the Product Placement department and later hooked up with Director John Badham, who mentored him into a second-unit director, after Badham lost his 2nd-unit director Rob Cohen to a first-unit directing career. He hooked up with writer Scott Rosenberg, who penned a short film for him entitled, Cyclops, Baby. The film helped launch Caruso's directing career. Book Vs. Movie: To Kill a MockingbirdThe 1960 Novel Vs. the 1962 MovieThe 1962 film adaptation of To Kill a Mockingbird, directed by Robert Mulligan, is a powerful retelling of Harper Lee's classic novel. The story follows Atticus Finch, played by Gregory Peck in an Oscar-winning performance, as he defends Tom Robinson (Brock Peters), a Black man falsely accused of raping a white woman in 1930s Alabama. The film is seen through the eyes of Atticus's young daughter, Scout (Mary Badham), and her brother Jem (Phillip Alford), who grapple with the harsh realities of racism and injustice in their small town. Key characters include Dill Harris (John Megna), Scout and Jem's imaginative friend, and Boo Radley (Robert Duvall), the mysterious neighbor who ultimately reveals his true character. The movie focuses on the moral courage of Atticus and the loss of innocence experienced by the children, capturing the essence of the novel's themes in a more streamlined narrative.Which version did we (the Margos) prefer? On the September 18, 2024 edition of the Richard Crouse Show we meet Mary Badham. She had no acting experience before she auditioned for the role of the intelligent and unconventional girl Jean Louise Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird. Better known by the nickname Scout, the character is the daughter of Alabama lawyer, Atticus Finch, played by Gregory Peck in the classic film. Mary Badham, at just ten years of age, became the youngest actress to that date to be nominated for Best Supporting Actress. At age fourteen, after appearing in several other films and television show, including the final episode of the original Twilight Zone series, she retired from acting at age fourteen. She stayed close with Gregory Peck, who she always called Atticus, until his death in 2003. To Kill a Mockingbird has never completely left her life, however, Mary has traveled around the world recalling her experiences making the classic film, and praising the book's messages of tolerance and compassion, and now, in her debut as a stage actor, she plays, quote “the meanest old woman who ever lived,” Mrs. Dubose in the national touring production of Aaron Sorkin's stage adaptation of To Kill a Mockingbird, which features Richard Thomas in the role of Atticus Finch and is now playing at the CAA Ed Mirvish Theatre in Toronto. Check mirvish.com for more details. Then, Christian Sparkes, a film director and screenwriter from St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. His new movie, “The King Tide,” is set in an isolated, struggling community, ten years after a child with miraculous gifts washed up on the beach. She is able to heal people, but after a decade of prosperity, her adoptive parents are forced to decide whether her safety is more important than their community's prosperity

Older people's brain power is catching up with the young. New research has found generational IQ gains have plateaued. Frank spoke to lead researcher Prof Stephen Badham from Nottingham Trent University Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
My guest this week is Professor Paul Badham who for many years was Professor of Theology and Religious Studies at Lampeter, where he began his career in 1973. His own father had done an English degree there before studying Theology at Oxford and whose own writings were influential on Paul. We find out how Paul got interested in his seminal research on life after death, which hadn't been a central plank of his studies beforehand. He mentions Penny Sartori's work in terms of gathering the relevant evidence and we find out about other students of his who have undertaken research on NDEs and the afterlife, including his Canadian students who worked on the care of the dying which brought about a change of emphasis in Paul's own work in this area. Paul talks about being a patron of Dignity in Dying and how his work here prompted former Archbishop of Canterbury George Carey to change his mind on the topic. We discuss his media appearances and Paul talks about his regret that he has been associated so much with this particular branch of theology when his interests have spanned the wider area of Christian theology, with world religions being of particular interest to him. We talk about his own PhD supervisor John Hick and how he made it respectable to talk about issues around parapsychology but that the work was not always seen in this way. We find out about the funding that was available in the 1990s for students from Turkey to undertake PhDs in the department and we discuss Paul's stance on the ordination of women and how in many ways he was ahead of his time. We find out where Paul grew up and that his father was a vicar, and Paul reflects on how it feels as though he grew up into a different world in some respects. He did Theology at Oxford which, he reflects, was quite an old fashioned Christianity-centred degree. He talks about how the parameters of the subject and its relationship to Religious Studies was to change over the years. We also find out about the way music has impacted on Paul's life, and how he first met his wife, Linda, in a choir when they were both at Birmingham, and Paul talks about how music is often one of the triggers for religious experience. We find out also how due to Paul's health he has turned increasingly to being ‘read to' via podcasts. Paul also discusses his work on comparing religious experience in Britain and China, and we find out whether Paul, who was ordained, imagined that he would follow an academic or a church career. We learn that at Lampeter Paul wanted to move away from the notion that academic theology should be taught only by believers and that other religions should be taught by atheists who were interested in religious studies. He is proud of how world religions were taught by scholars who were both within and from without the faith traditions concerned. Paul talks about having gone five times to Japan to lecture and about his experience of working across theology and religious studies colleagues at Lampeter. It is all very different from when he arrived in Lampeter as back then everyone was a Christian theologian. I ask Paul if there was a particular golden age from his time at Lampeter, and Paul reveals what his younger self would think about what he went on to do in his life and career. We also find out at the end of the interview whether Paul is a looking back or a looking forward type of person.

In 1962, Mary Badham made her big-screen debut in the classic film To Kill a Mockingbird as the beloved Scout Finch, opposite Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch. Today, she has returned to Harper Lee's iconic story in the touring Broadway production by playing Mrs. Dubose -- the racist neighbor who represents the antithesis of Scout's innocence and acceptance. His 50-year involvement in the sport has seen him work on 10 America's Cups, nine Olympics Games, more than 40 Sydney to Hobart races and countless world championships and big events. He's been a critical member of Team New Zealand for 20 years, helping them firstly win the Cup in Bermuda in 2017 and then retain it earlier this year in Auckland, and has also worked with New Zealand's top Olympic campaigners for the last five Games. Clouds has described weather forecasting as like short-term futures trading - either selling or buying left or right – but his accuracy is something he's renowned for it and it earned him a job working with the Ferrari Formula 1 team. Roger talks about his career in this episode of Broad Reach Radio, how he got into the industry, what forecasting was like in the early days before computer modelling and then the arms race as teams tried to get the edge, what impact he's had on various campaigns and the pressure he can sometimes come under to get it right. He also touches on the world of Formula 1 and how it differs to high-level sailing.
Film analizzati: "Nosferatu" (F. W. Murnau, 1922) con accenni al remake di Herzog "Dracula" (T. Browning, 1931) "Dràcula" (G. Melford, 1931) "Dracula" (T. Fisher, 1958) "El Conte Dracula" (J. Franco, 1970) "Cuadecuc, Vampir" (P. Portabella, 1971) "Blood for Dracula" (P. Morrissey, 1974) "Dracula" (J. Badham, 1979) "Bram Stoker's Dracula" (F. F. I think going forward, there's a lot that the arts can do. Philosophically art is one of the only places that we can still ask these questions, play out politics and negotiate ideas. Further, art isn't about communicating climate disaster, art is about creating space for people to think through some of these issues.dr. marnie badham, conscient podcast, may 13, 2021, australiaWith a twenty-five-year history of art and social justice in Australia and Canada, Dr. Marnie Badham's research sits at the intersection of socially-engaged art practice, participatory methodologies and the politics of cultural measurement. Through aesthetic forms of encounter and exchange, her work brings together disparate groups of people in dialogue to examine and affect local issues. Her current focus includes a series of creative cartographies registering emotions in public space; expanded curation projects on the aesthetics and politics of food; and a book project The Social Life of Artist Residencies: connecting with people and place not your own. Marnie is Senior Research Fellow at the School of Art and co-leader for CAST (contemporary art and social transformation) research group and CVIN Cultural Value Impact Network at RMIT University in Naarm (Melbourne), Australia. I first met Marnie when she was General Manager of Common Weal Community Arts in Regina. She was passionate articulate about community-engaged arts then and still is today. I have often turned to Marnie for advice on arts policy issues and was honoured when she accepted my invitation for a conscient conversation. As I have done in all episodes in season 2 so far, I have integrated excerpts from soundscape compositions and quotations drawn from e19 reality, as well as moments of silence, in this episode.I would like to thank Marnie for taking the time to speak with me, for sharing her deep knowledge of community arts, her innumerable research projects and her insights about art as a collective space to think through complex issue.

Book Vs Movie Saturday Night Fever Based on a short story in New York magazine, the 1977 movie is dissected in this special episode The Margos are suffering from a case of “Night Fever” and the only sure is taking a deep dive into one of the most successful films of the 1970s--Saturday Night Fever. The film was directed by John Badham and stars John Travolta in his first Academy-Award nominated performance as an actor. The idea for the film comes from an article from New York magazine in 1976 “Tribal Rights of the New Saturday Night” by reporter Nik Cohn. At the time, Cohn said it was based on a real group of people from Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. In fact, it turns out he pretty much made up the whole thing. The story of “Vincent” a teenage dance phenom who is just trying to earn and living and forget about living in a working-class neighborhood caught the eyes of Hollywood and a screenplay was created as a starring vehicle for Travolta who was seen by millions every week on the ABC-TV hit sitcom Welcome Back Kotter. Badham inherited the movie two weeks filming was supposed to start without film locations set and without the role of Stephanie filled. We have so much behind the scenes gossip and trivia here to talk about in addition to the fabulous soundtrack! (The Bee Gees at their finest!) Between the article and film--which did the Margos like better? (Is it even going to be close?) In this ep the Margos discuss: How Nik Cohn came to writing the article for New York magazine How the film overcame so many obstacles to become a classic How the dancing was received The incredible music! In this episode of PSYCHO-SEXUAL, Patrick and Seb review the incredibly steamy made-for-tv Women in Prison film NIGHTMARE IN BADHAM COUNTY (1976). One of the most controversial TV-movies of the 1970's. The film is about 2 women who, while travelling across country, pass through a rural American town in Arkansas, only to become arrested and embroiled in a prison labour scam. This film is filled to the brim Lesbian dominance, rape, and racial issues. Be warned. The 55th Next 100 Project podcast (and our 200th podcast overall, yay!) takes us to ’70s Brooklyn and drops us in the disco scene. John Travolta’s star-making performance, with all its machismo and dancey talents, is easily the best thing about the flick. It’s hard to argue against the authenticity of the rape scenes or the racism, but man, that material makes this movie a rougher experience than you might expect from a disco movie. Stay alive with Sparkplug Coffee and then activate the podcast about the white suit.
