Chapter 1 What's Parent Effectiveness Training by Thomas GordonParent Effectiveness Training (PET), developed by Thomas Gordon in the 1960s, is a comprehensive approach designed to assist parents in fostering better relationships with their children through effective communication. The program emphasizes the importance of active listening, respectful dialogue, and problem-solving skills. Gordon's methods focus on understanding children's needs and feelings, promoting self-directed learning, and encouraging children to express their thoughts and emotions freely. The PET framework advocates for a non-punitive approach to discipline, shifting away from traditional authoritarian methods to a more collaborative family dynamic. Parents are taught to engage in cooperative problem-solving sessions, helping children learn accountability and responsibility while strengthening their emotional connections. The training includes practical exercises, role-playing scenarios, and real-life applications to ensure that parents can effectively implement the strategies in their daily lives. Overall, PET aims to develop a supportive environment that nurtures children's emotional and psychological well-being.Chapter 2 Parent Effectiveness Training by Thomas Gordon SummaryParent Effectiveness Training (PET) by Thomas Gordon: Summary Overview: Parent Effectiveness Training, developed by psychologist Thomas Gordon in the 1960s, is a program designed to help parents improve their communication and conflict-resolution skills with their children. It emphasizes the importance of fostering a nurturing environment while encouraging children to express their feelings and develop a sense of responsibility. The program combines principles of psychology with practical approaches that are easy for parents to implement.Key Concepts: Effective Communication: The foundation of PET is effective communication, which involves active listening, empathy, and openness. Parents are taught to focus on understanding their children's feelings and perspectives without immediately reacting or correcting them.I-Statements: Gordon emphasizes the use of "I-statements" instead of "you-statements" to express feelings without placing blame. For example, saying "I feel frustrated when you leave your toys out" is more constructive than saying "You never clean up your toys."Conflict Resolution: The program teaches parents how to manage conflicts positively. The goal is to resolve issues in a manner that respects both parent and child needs. Gordon introduces a conflict-resolution model to help parents find mutually acceptable solutions through discussion and negotiation.Problem Ownership: Parents are encouraged to help their children learn to own their problems. Instead of solving every issue for their children, parents should guide them toward finding their own solutions. This builds children's confidence and decision-making skills.Active Listening: Active listening is a critical skill emphasized in PET. Parents are taught to listen intently to their children's concerns and feelings, reflecting back what they've heard to confirm understanding.Parenting Styles: The program highlights different parenting styles (authoritative, permissive, authoritarian) and promotes a collaborative and accepting approach that fosters children's independence and self-esteem.Program Structure: PET workshops consist of a series of sessions where parents learn through discussion, role-playing, and practical exercises. The curriculum covers the concepts mentioned above and provides tools and activities to practice these skills. Outcomes: Research suggests that parents who undergo PET report better relationships with their children, lower levels of conflict, and increased satisfaction in their parenting roles....

In today's episode, we discuss the concept of "unschooling", a learner-directed educational approach popularized by John Holt, contrasting it with traditional schooling.Traditional? Actually what we know as "unschooling" was considered pretty normal until the Industrial Revolution introduced the concept of the 8-hour work day, parents working far from home. What to do with the kids?Voila! The modern school environment was born. And while there are some pretty good public and even private institutions, even the best of intentions can't undo basic humanity and how we're programmed to learn how to live life, learn a trade or a profession, etc.Our guest, Judy Arnall, is the author of 'Unschooling to University'. Judy shares her journey into unschooling driven by her dissatisfaction with authoritarian school environments and her commitment to non-punitive parenting.Judy explains the benefits of unschooling, such as fostering a child's innate curiosity and self-directed learning, and addresses common concerns like gaps in knowledge and the role of screens in education. We also touch on the practicalities of unschooling, such as transitioning to formal learning for university preparation and overcoming societal misconceptions about educational authority. The conversation includes Judy's insights into brain development, discipline versus punishment, and the advantages of personalized, interest-driven education for children.Be sure to tune in to my follow-up interview with Judy which focuses exclusively on the concept of non-punitive parenting. So we've talked about mindfulness on this show before, and if you're in my Differently Wired Club, you know that mindfulness meditation is something I explore from time to time but really struggle with implementing in the way I think I'm supposed to. Like, I always feel like I'm doing it wrong or it's just not for me. But as my guest today, Hunter Clarke-Fields, explains, there are many accessible ways to practice mindfulness, even for people like me who feel like they can't, or don't want to, slow down. And there's just no disputing the powerful way that mindfulness can support us in helping us be more present, more grounded, more calm, more open, and more curious when navigating all the big, challenging stuff with our neurodivergent kids. During our conversation, Hunter demonstrates a few mindful techniques to regulate yourself when you need it that are very doable even if you only have 3 minutes — I've actually been doing them since we recorded this, and I'm still at it! Hunter also shared strategies to show our kids compassion when they are struggling and introduces us to what has become one of my most favorite positive self-talk phrases — “permission to be human” — as a reminder when we have less than brilliant parenting, or life, moments. She ended the conversation with a beautiful reflection on why it's important to see our kids for who they are and be willing to be open to the changes that happen every day for them.   About Hunter Clarke-Fields Hunter Clarke-Fields MSAE, E-RYT (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is a Mindfulness Mentor, Mindful Mama podcast host, mom, global speaker, and number 1 bestselling author of Raising Good Humans, as well as her most recent book, Raising Good Humans Every Day (Aug 1, 2023). Question concerning discussion from a prior livestream concerning propaganda. Your description of women being the victim of statist propaganda in regards hyper-materialism, surface aesthetic obsession, misandry, collectivism, etc. was of interest. Your explanation in my humble opinion sounded very much in line with leftist victimology.Perhaps I missed something. Are individuals to be held responsible and accountable for actions in response to being propagandized? Seems you are most willing to blame vaccine zealots, statists, collectivists, communists, etc. Could they merely be excused for being propagandized? Please clarify.Listening to your novel 'The Present' I should be caught up to chapter 20. Grim stuff. But great writing.Hey Stef! I want to thank you for recommending the book, “Parent Effectiveness Training” in a recent live stream. It seems like fantastic resource peaceful parenting. I'm curious to know if you think anything is missing from that book or if you have any other suggestions for further reading. I'm recently married and we intend to start having children in the next year. Much love to you my brother!Stefan, I have a moral philosophy question for you. Any thoughts on moral asymmetries? For instance, do you believe the presence of virtuous action in a person is relative to the power imbalance between the person doing the act and the one receiving it? For example: if a security guard treats an inmate with virtue, is it of more moral significance than if the inmate treats the security guard with virtue?Having a lot of fears lately. I know I can't keep my child in a bubble, but how can I deter him from getting sucked in to the stupidity of todays social media generation, as well as the overexposure to all the darker things on the web. How can we best prepare him?How is your relationship with other personalities in the world of libertarian philosophy? people like Larken Rose, Michael Malice, Dennis Pratt, Tom Woods, or whoever. Is there someone you particularly like? or someone you don't like at all.Hypothetical moral conundrums are insanely annoying.Stef, why not try to come back to twitter at this point, since Elon?Stef, I can't think of a single thinker who approaches anything close to your level of insight about such a wide variety of topics. You're as good as the top Austrians on economics, you're better at psychology than most psychologists, you have tech skills, etc.Humility is the opposite of pride, the modern world is dripping with pride, it's not taught or shown anymoreLook I just wanted to jump back in and say I'm sad you felt like going off on a tirade on me. i was one of your oldest supporters and now I don't feel like supporting you. it's a weird feeling. bye.I struggle with criticism too. When I was a child, every criticism from my father was always accompanied by either verbal or physical abuse.Abusive people around your kids? You should build a dating app for your followers only.6/28/2023

How can we create family relationships that weather any storm? Dr. Shauna Shapiro explains how our old paradigms of parenting get it wrong, and research-proven ways to become a mindful mama.  Some important takeaways from this conversation: “What you practice grows stronger.” If we practice judgement, we become more judgmental. If we practice kindness, we strengthen hat. We know that with neuroplasticity, our repeated experiences shape the brain. Shame actually prevents us from making the changes that we want to make. Instead, kindness releases dopamine and turns ON the learning centers of the brain, activating us for change. As a parent, you can be in your sovereignty and power, hold boundaries, and keep a soft heart. Click here to start the conversation about this episode! After being in the car for hours on our drive home from visiting family for Thanksgiving, we got stuck in traffic during the last 15 miles home. I was driving, feeling totally done, more than ready to be home. The girls were understandably irritable. It was not a great scene. Yet, out the window was the most beautiful sunset. It was breathtaking -- a pink and red epic experience. It was utterly breathtaking. Both were happening at the same time - our suffering, and this incomprehensible beauty. Noticing and appreciating this sunset was a conscious practice in that moment. It's the same with  our own equanimity - it's a conscious practice. Here are the five steps that I discuss in detail in this episode: Practice meditation regularly. Cultivate the conditions for happiness. Notice your thoughts and feelings with curiosity. Interrupt the harmful thoughts. Rest in your feelings and feel them fully. Rinse and repeat. I hope this episode has helped you my friend! If so, I'd really appreciate your feedback. We focus on the food, but it's the relationships that bring us together. Yet, gathering with our families is not always all we'd hope it would be. Many of us come from families with a lot of suffering. Certain relationships tend to cause a lot of suffering in us. Peace is not always served at our tables. It can be a stressful time to say the least. But it doesn't have to be. We have enormous power to change the dynamic. We can participate in the status quo or we can become part of the change. How do you prepare for an experience with your relatives? Do you get anxious? Do you focus your thoughts on what you don't like about them? In other words, do you expect a bad experience? If you do, you are probably not disappointed. When we focus all of our energy on what we don't like, we find little that we do. The good news is that we can change our experience by changing ourselves. The first thing that we have to realize is that we are responsible for our own emotions. Your frustration comes from inside of you. The same experience doesn't have to leave you suffering. You can choose how you would like to be with your family.   How do we choose? Mindfulness practices give us room to make change. And changing our mindset is a huge part of it. 6 Steps for Bringing Peace to the Table... Click here to share comments and find show notes. “To become a mother is to enter a dharma door.” What does that mean? It means that the experience of parenting is a teaching, or a path to awakening, and I absolutely believe that. In this episode of the podcast, I talk to Leslie Davis of Dharma Mamas, a blog and online community for mindful mothers. Leslie and I share a spiritual tradition in that we follow the teachings of mindfulness from zen master and peacemaker, Thich Nhat Hanh. Some highlights from the conversation: Being there for our children when we don't want to be there for them. Getting support as mothers Dealing with feelings of unworthiness It's never to late to begin anew You can find out more about Leslie Davis at Dharmamamas.com or her personal blog, Heartlunge.com. Poolside, about a month ago, I had a conversation with a couple of cool mamas in my neighborhood. I'm not sure we had ever discussed parenting before. One mom mentioned that her greatest realization in parenting was this: It's not about you. What does that mean? It means that our kids will have problems, moods, etc. that are not about you. Your job is not to fix every single one of your kid's problems. Refreshing, isn't that? But also...it's all about you. How so if it's not about you? What I want to point out here is that parenting is NOT about fixing your kids. Generally, we do far too much "molding," "shaping," and "teaching." Instead, it's about you - about regulating your own reactions and triggers. Did you benefit from this episode? What are the 5 rules of parenting? In this episode, Carla Naumburg and I talk about the article, The 5 Rules of Parenting by Mike Troiano. After 54 collective years of parenting, does Mike have all the answers? Yes, and no. There are things we really agree with, and things don't. My three big takeaways from our conversation were: You need support at the baby stage Should your toddlers fear you? No! Parenting is about the long game, and strong relationships are paramount And listen for mine and Carla's parenting wins and fails! We also mentioned Ron Leiber's The Opposite of Spoiled and Fam Zoo. Family mindfulness retreat? Yes, it exists! Earlier this summer, my two girls, husband, and I packed ourselves off to a quiet mountain in New York for a week of no phones, no wifi, no screens, no alcohol, no meat...and it was actually fun! In this episode, I tell you all about it.  Around 200 people were there, interested in living mindfully, including tons of children and teens. As adults, we had lots of meditation time, and our children learned mindfulness practices too. Would this be right for your family? Listen to find out! Fan of the Mindful Mama Podcast? Did you know that highly stressed western children looked just like war refugee children in terms of stress? In this episode, I talk to Kim Payne, author of Simplicity Parenting. We talk about "the undeclared war on childhood,” and how our culture of too much too fast, too young, is overwhelming our kids.  Learn how simplifying you and your child's stuff and environment will bring more ease to your lives. Take back your kid's childhood from the  “molded plastic tsunami” of toys and too much screen time.  Did you know that brothers and sisters often play together better with fewer toys - why? Find out how to activate their innate neurology to foster more cooperation and collaboration.  Kim Payne offers a very different image of screen time than our recent guest, Deborah Heitner. He points out that studies show screens damage brains. Instead, Kim is pro nature, pro family connection, pro REAL friends -- and these take time and are slow. I really connected to our discussion of "connection to self" - feeling comfortable in your own skin, and knowing your own values as opposed to pop values.  About Kim: Kim John Payne, M.ED has been passionately working to thousands of people give voice to the feeling that something is not okay about the new normal of overwhelm that so many people are now experiencing. What is vacation mind? In this episode of the podcast, I discuss this idea as presented by Leo Babuta in his Zen Habits post, The Practice of Work Mind & Vacation Mind, Simultaneously. He defines it: "Vacation mind lets that anxiety go, and is just present in the current moment. Time is less important, enjoying yourself is the priority." So how do we do that in parenting? In everyday life? I'd love to know your takeaways from this solo episode. How can you practice more vacation mind in your life? Self-Care Isn't Selfish, It's Your Responsibility [70]

In the 90s Oprah had a life coach on who said something that shocked her studio audience of suburban moms. She had asked the audience to make a list of all the priorities in their lives. Then she asked, “Where are you on that list?” Lots of the audience did not have themselves on the list at all. Then she made her outrageous suggestion: “You should be the #1 priority on your list.” The audience booed. Oprah said, “Hold on,” and asked them why they booed. Oprah said, “It doesn't mean that others are kicked off your list when you put yourself first.” We've come a long way since then. Or have we? If you made a list of priorities, who would be on your list? Where would you be on your list? Many moms tell me that taking care of themselves is not a priority. If you are really honest with yourself, is that you? The thing is, if you are not #1 on your list, you're realizing a fundamental truth: You cannot give what you do not have.  If you are not taking care of you, you are gyping your children and your family. You are offering them a second-rate version of you. And you are role-modeling a life of “not worthy.” Making yourself a priority isn't selfish. In fact, it's the opposite. It's called taking responsibility. Find the shownotes for this podcast here on MindfulMamaPodcast.com  Fan of the Mindful Mama Podcast? Worried About The Long Days Of Summer? [69]

School ends soon and summer will officially begin around here. In the past, this triggered anxiety for me. What would we do all day? How do we get through the long days of summer? This is the same feeling that leads many to put their kids into camp after camp, activity after activity. Downtime is like an enemy to be conquered. In my house, we aren't worried about hearing “I'm bored” anymore. In fact, I don't hear it very often because my girls are so used to having unstructured time to follow their own imagination. Now, I'm not afraid of “I'm bored,” but I used to be. My anxiety over my daughter's outbursts and volatile emotions used to make me really worry about the long days of summer. My fear led me to follow my habitual reaction of trying to control things more. I needed to shape and structure the day so that I could keep my anxiety at bay. It was a struggle. Do we suffer from our circumstances, or from wanting it to be otherwise? The Buddha taught that most of our suffering is caused by grasping at things in an impermanent world. Both the Buddha and Patanjali's yoga sutra's teach that the path to liberation involves letting go of our grasping - letting go of wanting things to be other than they are. This podcast shares 6 tips on how to get through the long days of summer - in a deeper way.   Fan of the Mindful Mama Podcast?
