This week Nicola and Di are excited to bring you the first episode of our new financial series, Over The Money Fence with Roger Montgomery. This series aims to help you take control of your finances with clarity and confidence. If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by investing, unsure about what’s happening in the markets, or you just want to make a smarter decision with your money then you are in the right place. We will be joined each month by financial expert Roger Montgomery, who you may remember from our 100th episode. Roger is the Founder and Chairman of Montgomery Investment Management, has over 30 years’ investing experience and a highly respected financial commentator featuring on various ABC programs, as well as his popular column in The Australian newspaper. He is also the author of best-selling investment guidebook Value.able. In this conversation we chat about a really important topic - where should you invest when markets feel wild and you feel scared? Roger gives us such reassuring and calming advice about what we need to pay attention to, what we can tune out, and why it’s important to take your time when it comes to making financial decisions. He is able to explain the share market in a way that’s not only understandable, but interesting and talks to us about the difference between speculating and investing. We also talk about other ways of investing that aren’t as volatile as the share market, including private credit, gold and term deposits. Roger gives us a brief overview of the pros and cons of each of these investments, and why you might choose one over the other. We also have a meaningful chat about what’s really important in life, and that true value lies in the relationships we have with the people we love. We learnt so much from Roger in this episode, and more importantly we already feel more calm and confident when it comes to our finances. Roger also set some homework for us all this month - get all of your investments down on paper, make sure you know where all your money is, and find out what return they’ve been generating for you. Stay tuned until the end of the episode to hear Di, Nicola and their producer Sam chat about what impacted them from this conversation - believe it or not, there are tears already. This episode is proudly supported by Montgomery Investment Management, trusted experts helping you build and protect your financial future. This week Nicola and Di celebrate their 100th episode!! To mark this special occasion, Nicola and Di chat with the successful and relatable Roger Montgomery. Roger is the Founder and Chairman of Montgomery Investment Management, has over 30 years’ investing experience and a highly respected financial commentator featuring on various ABC programs, as well as his popular column in The Australian newspaper. He is also the author of best-selling investment guidebook Value.able. We really wanted to have Roger on our podcast because he has a gift for making investing andfinances so easy to understand, and he keeps things relevant and fun. He is full of wise advice and has even been described as the Warren Buffet of Australia. Roger is also a family man, with a beautiful wife and 3 children, who we get to hear more about in this interview. In this conversation Roger helps us understand how we can become more aware of our attitude towards money and how it forms when we’re really young. He shares with us a great little test you can do with your kids, which will give you a good idea of whether they’ll be a good saver when it comes to money, or whether they’ll spend it. Roger chats to us about the money challenges that women in their 50s and over are facing, with divorce rates going up and many women being faced with a situation they weren’t expecting, and having to learn how to navigate their financial future, which can feel a bit daunting at times. We talk about why it’s so important to learn more about managing your money, slow down rather than being rushed into a financial decision, surround yourself with people you trust, and be more empowered when it comes to your money. We also get to hear a little bit of Roger’s personal story, the jobs he had as a kid and the values his mum instilled in him at an early age. Roger shares the beautiful story of how he met his wife on the ferry when he was 27, and they’ve now been married for 26 years. Di brings up her fear of the stock market, and Roger gives her some great, calming advice. The good news is, this is the very beginning of our conversations with Roger, who is going to teach us everything we need to know about finance and help break down some of the fears we might have when it comes to money or investing. We are thrilled to announce we will be doing a monthly series with Roger called Over the Money Fence, which is going to help us all feel more confident about managing our money. Happy 100th episode! We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did and we want to say a huge THANK YOU to all our listeners who have been with us from the beginning, and to those who have joined along the way. Roger Montgomery, CIO and founder of Montgomery Investment Management, shares his thoughts on: why Buffett can't help accruing cash, and what he's really been doing with it four new stocks that Berkshire Hathaway is buying instead of Apple the Australian companies that Warren would buy in a sell off, and how to build wealth like the man himself You can access this and previous episodes of the Your Wealth podcast now on iTunes, Podbean, Spotify or at nabtrade.com.au/yourwealth If you're short on time, consider listening at 1.5-2x speed, which should be shown on the screen of your device as you listen. Bittersweet. Civil war. Virtual reality. And the famous Mark Twain quote “It usually takes more than three weeks to prepare a good impromptu speech.” What do all these have in common? Why, they're oxymorons of course! That brings us to the topic of today's episode of Buy Hold Sell: Resilient small caps. While these ideas are not complete opposites, the small end of town is certainly where you'll be more susceptible to stock price capitulation, particularly as the market starts to crunch. And boy, it is crunching alright. The S&P/ASX Small Ordinaries is down nearly 17% year to date, while its big brother the ASX200 has printed a more modest -5.5%. Some former small-cap darlings have led the descent, the following among those caught in the selloff: Buy now pay later company Z1P (ASX: Z1P) fell -78.75% Digital payments firm Tyro (ASX: TYR) down -62.94% Online sports betting company Pointsbet Holdings (ASX: PBH) dipped by -62.84% Data centre business Megaport (ASX: MP1) declined -59.54% If you're in need of capital protection but can't let go of your Growth infatuation just yet, this episode is for you. We hosted small-cap specialists Josh Clark from QVG Capital and Gary Rollo from Montgomery Investment Management, quizzing them on the small caps they believe offer exciting upside after the sell-off while remaining resilient through market cycles. The stocks covered are: Travel company Webjet (ASX: WEB), Billing software firm Hansen Technologies (ASX: HSN), and Data and software company Objective Corporation (ASX: OCL).
When volatility is up and risk appetites are down, small caps invariably take a hit. Investors will naturally gravitate towards more liquid areas of the market. But the sell-off has been about more than just risk-off sentiment. Fundamentals have changed. Consumer-facing stocks are feeling the pinch while rising rates are set to hurt long-duration names with a lot of debt on the books. You can still remain invested in the market, though, so long as you replace any sells with high conviction buys. "It's ok to be active, but don't forget to buy something on the other side," says Josh Clark from QVG Capital. In this edition of Buy Hold Sell, Josh is joined by Gary Rollo from Montgomery Investment Management to offer up some tips that will help you "aim small, miss small." They'll also discuss the tech growth names that have 35% upside. Read or watch below. Note: This episode of Buy Hold Sell was shot on Wednesday 25th May 2022. Growth stocks have been punished, especially at the smaller and less liquid end of the market. Think of sectors like healthcare, discretionary retail and tech (Covid winners anyone?). But what does that look like in terms of numbers? Glad you asked, as our friends at Deep Data Analytics have recently crunched the numbers and it isn't pretty. The worst 10 performers in the small cap healthcare sector are down ~32% on average, in discretionary retail the fall is ~49% and things get ugly in tech where the worst 10 are down ~54% on average. No doubt many Livewire readers will have had some high-growth names on the wishlist, but couldn't stomach the valuations. So, we invited small cap specialists Josh Clark from QVG Capital and Gary Rollo from Montgomery Investment Management to see if a selection of market darlings are cheap enough to get them interested. The stocks covered are IDP Education, Pro Medicus and City Chic Collective. Our guests also share a growth stock that they think has been oversold and now looks attractive.

While large caps usually get all the attention from dividend seekers, small caps often punch above their weight in this respect. In fact, the three stocks named below have paid out an average 6.2% yield (including franking credits) over the last 12 months! In this episode, Livewire's James Marlay is joined by Montgomery Investment Management's Roger Montgomery and Investors Mutual Limited's Simon Conn for their analysis of three small-cap stocks that also boast impressive dividends. These include reader favourite Fiducian Group (ASX: FID), administration services provider Smartgroup Corporation (ASX: SIQ) and real estate investment trust Charter Hall Retail REIT (ASX: CQR). If that's not enough, our fundies also each name a small-cap with big dividend potential in the years to come. Now that's what I call bang for your buck. Note: This episode was filmed on Wednesday 13th October 2021. You can read an edited transcript below: https://www.livewiremarkets.com/wires/buy-hold-sell-5-small-caps-with-big-dividends
We are often told that a management team can make or break a business. It's why industry jargon like "skin in the game" has become so renowned, and why investors idolise companies that are founder-led. In fact, recent research from Reuters found that founder-led companies materially outperformed those led by "suits". Founder-led tech firms, in particular, saw earnings growth of around 30% over the past five years, while companies led by recruited managers saw their earnings rise approximately 6.7%. So in this thematic episode of Buy Hold Sell, Livewire's James Marlay is joined by Montgomery Investment Management's Roger Montgomery and Investors Mutual Limited's Simon Conn for a look at the best management teams across the ASX. Our fundies will point to their favourite management teams (and outline why) across financials, energy and resources, retail, technology and healthcare. Plus, they also highlight the common attributes of killer management teams and boards so you can identify them yourself. Note: This episode was filmed on Wednesday 13th October 2021. Over the past 18 months, Australians have faced an onslaught of truly biblical proportions. One after the other, fires, floods and a literal plague have ravaged this place we call home. And yet, despite this tireless tyranny, our companies fought back, with earnings surprisingly upbeat at the beginning of this year. In the face of recent lockdowns, however, Macquarie found that only 20% of the ASX300 upgraded their earnings growth estimates for FY22. Meantime, around 48% of the market was flat, and 33% downgraded their earnings estimates for the year ahead. So in this episode of Buy Hold Sell, we've invited Investors Mutual's Simon Conn and Montgomery Investment Management's Roger Montgomery to share their thoughts on three companies that have plenty of earnings growth potential. These include Australian Clinical Labs, MNF Group, and Ingenia Communities. Plus, they'll also name two stocks that could surprise the market with upgrades in the months to come. Note: This episode was filmed on Wednesday 13th October 2021. You can read an edited transcript below: https://www.livewiremarkets.com/wires/buy-hold-sell-5-stocks-in-an-upgrade-cycle-2021-10-14/

Roger Montgomery, Founder and Chief Investment Officer of Montgomery Investment Management, joins Michael for his take on 'GameStop', the US bricks-and-mortar video retailer, that saw its shares surging to dizzying heights last week as small-time traders took on Wall Street. At the close of trade in New York on Friday, its retail stock was up 68 per cent to $US325, ending the week on a high for GameStop investors. GameStop stock (GME) has risen more than 1,500% for the year driven largely by a group of investors on Reddit, who are buying the stock to hurt short sellers and hedge funds that had bet on the stock to go down. Michael is joined by Roger Montgomery, Founder and Chief Investment Officer of Montgomery Investment Management, regarding Treasurer Dominic Perrottet’s undertaking of NSW’s biggest tax reform in decades as NSW records a historic $16 billion budget deficit. Part of the plan is for payroll tax to be overhauled, with the rate to be reduced from 5.45 per cent to 4.85 per cent, which will deliver businesses savings on average of $34,000 a year over the next two years. It’s been estimated that the change will cost NSW $2.1 billion in revenue. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Companies developing products for massive end markets are one of the hottest vectors of opportunity in the market right now. The idea is simple: develop a product or solution that requires a relatively low fixed cost but meets the needs of a large population. In this episode of Buy Hold Sell, Chris Stott of 1851 Capital and Gary Rollo from Montgomery Investment Management debate three small caps ripe for this thematic. They include 1) City Chic Collective - A specialty fashion retailer benefiting from the shift to online sales; 2) Megaport - A leading network-as-a-service provider; 3) EML Payments - A specialist in general reloadable and gift card payment solutions. We also asked each of our guests to nominate a small cap stock with a big opportunity that they think looks attractive right now.

In the previous video, Roger Montgomery of Montgomery Investment Management and Ben Clark from TMS Capital stressed the importance of not overpaying for growth businesses to avoid being caught in the crossfire of high earnings expectations and an underwhelming reality. In this episode, the duo scour stocks in the domestic and international markets offering the best growth opportunities at a reasonable price. They include: 1) An Australian payments company at the top of Ben's list and whose share price has recently pulled back, 2) A WAAAX stock receiving unfair media coverage, 3) An ASX healthcare giant trying to find its feet, 4) A FAANG pick trading on 23x earnings; US$60 billion cash and tremendous growth optionality and 5) An iconic European brand riding the digital media boom. Have Australian investors mistaken their strategy all these years? As markets emerge from the “Corona Crash”, it's evident that high growth stocks continue to be the best performers. For those expecting a great rotation whereby cheap, dividend-paying businesses would finally be prized for their cashflow generation in an uncertain economy; that theory never materialised. To quantify this point, a recent study found that software stocks worldwide gained 21.41% from 14 February to 12 June. Meanwhile, capital-heavy banks, commodities, and industrial businesses – the backbone of domestic portfolios – are down ~25% (see below chart). That's an outperformance gap of over 40%. This begs the question: should investors change tack and load up on the Afterpays and Altiums of the world? Here, Ben Clark of TMS Capital and Roger Montgomery from Montgomery Investment Management discuss this topic and share their approach to growth investing as well as 7 stock ideas offering growth at a reasonable price. An investor's best friend… Google. We all use it, we all love it. Google processes approximately 70,000 search queries per second, meaning 5.8 billion searches per day. So we had to wonder, what are the most googled ASX stocks? Here, Ben Clark from TMS Capital and Roger Montgomery from Montgomery Investment Management discuss the six most googled Australian stocks. Join them as they talk about: 1) A household name with a very uncertain future; 2) One of Australia's most successful global stars; 3) A business spitting out cash amid high commodity prices; 4) A conglomerate riding the Work From Home boom; 5) A company that's fallen ~75% in 22 years; 6) A much-loved national icon facing the wrath of COVID-19. They may be the most popular on Google, but will they get the tick of approval from these fundies? Notes: This episode was filmed on 1 July 2020. Access the edited and transcript and video here.
Michael is joined by Roger Montgomery, Founder and Chief Investment Officer of Montgomery Investment Management, for his view on what’s going on with the share market and stock markets globally. Yesterday the ASX came off strong, but that was off the back of seven straight days of gains, creating one of the quickest bull market recoveries in the history of the ASX. All of this of the back of what is basically some pretty ordinary economic news; including concerns that unemployment will go up and remain well above 6% well into next year / September/October will very likely a fiscal cliff take place where government money in the form of job keeper dries up / bank mortgage lending holidays evaporate / rent holidays are no longer legally applicable… so suddenly many Australian’s will be unemployed, out of money and have their hand out.
There’s no doubt 2020 has been a wild ride for stock investors. Thanks to coronavirus, the oil price war, and growing tensions between global powers, we’ve never seen a more volatile stock market. In a single day in February, we saw share prices on the ASX drop by 7%, only to rise by 14% within a couple of hours. It was enough to leave the experts scratching their heads. Fund manager Roger Montgomery of Montgomery Investment Management shares his insights about why the stock market is behaving so erratically and whether there might be another big crash on its way. Plus, his tips for beginner investors. Roger Montgomery is one of Australia’s leading fund managers, he’s an author, a regular economic commentator and he’s been watching the corona virus situation unfold… long before it hit the headlines. He’s the founder and CEO of Montgomery Investment Management, he manages money for individuals and families, and it’s great to get a chance to speak to him as we watch financial markets go through a historic correction, after a decade long bull run. For all my listeners out there, I wanted to bring you a deeper look at what’s going on, in the stock market, to get insights from experts who are at the coal-face, but also, to explore how sustainable investments and ESG funds have performed after a decade of strong returns. Now Roger shared his thoughts on the corona virus and its impacts. We dug into the government’s response, as well as how small businesses and the hospitality industry can be helped through this crisis. I also wanted to go deep on the period since the GFC of 2009 when interest rates were cut to zero. Since then interest rates and wage growth have stayed low. While asset prices have headed to record highs, and I wanted to know why. But also, where we go next, as central banks around the world have fired all their ammunition, and now have very few options to stimulate the economy. The show notes are on my website at www.johntreadgold.com Enjoy

Brett Hall discusses value investing with Roger Montgomery, from Montgomery INvestment Management.
Today our guest is Roger Montgomery from Montgomery Investment Management to talk about his approach to value investing and what he thinks is going on with the Australian market and economy at the moment. Lots of great insights in this one, from the economics of enough, to black swans and what happens when the fear of missing out becomes larger than the fear of loss. For our premium subscribers, Tony then analyses our company of the week, Credit Corp Group (CCP), who does pretty well on the checklist.
Guest: Roger Montgomery, Chief Investment Officer, Montgomery Investment Management. Australian house prices and the economy stand at an important crossroads. On the one hand, we have the return of the Liberal-National coalition, the softening of APRA regulations, and rate cuts from the RBA, which all stand to stimulate. On the other hand, we have housing starts down by over 25% over the last year and showing no signs of turning, combined with anaemic retail sales, with the potential to push the economy into a dark place. One rarely discussed dynamic, however, is what Roger Montgomery, Chief Investment Officer at Montgomery Investment Management, calls 'the economics of enough'. “People have borrowed enough, they've bought enough stuff, and eventually growth slows, and that's where you get deleveraging occurring in the economy, where credit growth is slower than economic growth. I think there's a risk that we're now in that deleveraging phase.” In this week's episode of The Rules of Investing, Roger shares what "quality" really means to him, some lessons on late cycle investing from Buffett himself, and we discuss two outwardly-similar companies with very different long term prospects.
