Gregory Zukerman writes for the Wall Street Journal. Over the last few decades he has written several books. In 2019 he wrote "The Man Who solved the market: How Jim Simons Launched The Quant Revolution" which became a runaway hit. It tells the story of a genius mathematician who used modern quantitative techniques to make money for himself and his investors. Since 1988 one of the fund's operated by Mr Simons generated average annual returns of 66%. Legendary investors like Warren Buffet, George Soros and Peter Lynch, too, cannot claim to have made these outsized profits with such consistency. How did Mr Simons go about his business? How did he manage a stellar team while keeping them movitated? How did he use machine learning, artificial intelligence, data and analytics in an era when these terms were unheard of in the industry? Gregory Zukerman explains it all in this podcast.

In Part 1 of Episode 32 I'm joined by Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Famer & 1997 Assistant Ryder Cup Captain Dennis Satyshur and renowned Sports Psychologist Dr. Bob Winters. Dennis Satyshur is from Erie, Pennsylvania. He won the high school state golf championship in 1968. He went to Duke on a football scholarship and captained the football team plus lettered 3 years on the golf team. He began his career in golf working at Pinehurst. He later moved to Columbia Country Club where he worked for Bill Strausbaugh for 3 years. Several years later he won the Bill Strausbaugh Award for his commitment to mentoring others. Later on he became the first Director of Golf at Caves Valley Golf Club, one of the premier courses in the country. Dennis shares stories from his time at Duke, the day he met Tom Kite, Jim Simons, and Andy North when they were all college players, how he stalked Kite to learn from him, and their friendship which led to Kite asking him to be an Assistant Captain on the 1997 Ryder Cup team. You'll also hear about his years at Caves Valley, playing alongside members like Augusta National Chairman Fred Ridley, and the culture he created there. Dr. Bob Winters makes his monthly visit to the show this week. Doc addresses what to do if we have a blow-up hole like Nelly Korda did at the Women's US Open. He also gives insights into what sets his Asian players apart from his American players.

All the secrets of the Medallion fund revealed! Well, our speculations about the secret sauce anyway. Today, in a special tribute to Jim Simons, we are privileged to welcome the multi award winning journalist & author Greg Zuckerman to our podcast. Greg's detailed chronicle of Jim Simons' life in his book, "The Man Who Solved the Market," offers invaluable insights into Jim's genius and the remarkable team he assembled. Simons' strategy of bringing together the best minds in mathematics, physics, engineering, and other disciplines created a powerhouse of talent that drove Renaissance Technologies to unparalleled success. With gross returns of over 68% from 1988 through to 2022, this quant firm rules them all. Head on over to www.thealgorithmicadvantage.com for a full write up on the Medallion fund.
We lost a big one, guys. A true legend. Above all else...a chainsmoker. We take a moment this week to talk about Jim Simons, who he was, and why you should care. Then we've also got a couple young guys who died suddenly at Bank of America, which is...bad. But anyway then we're talkin about HIMS now offering GLP-1 drugs, and of course, finally, we gotta talk about the ongoing drama over at OpenAI. Sam Altman is clearly a little drama slut.
