Welcome welcome one and all! This is the newest episode of the The Mixtape with Scott where we talk to living economists, ask them what they wanted to be when they were little, learn what and how they did become, are becoming, what they became as an adult, and this week too, the road less traveled. This week's guest is named Jérémy L'Hour. I first learned about Jeremy because of a JASA on synthetic control he wrote with Alberto Abadie a few years ago entitled “A Penalized Synthetic Control Estimator for Disaggregated Data”. I then learned that Jérémy had studied with Xavier D'Haultfoueuille, the econometrician and coauthor to the famed difference-in-differences estimator in the AER that helped launch a thousand ships on difference-in-differences with differential timing. I reached out to see if we might talk as Jérémy has a story that I have not had a chance to hear about.Jérémy is the author of Machine Learning for Econometrics with Christophe Galliac which is forthcoming at Oxford University Press. And of course he is the author of the JASA on synthetic control with Abadie. But interestingly, he is not an academic. Rather, he works for a hedge fund called Capital Fund Management. Which was another reason I wanted to talk to him.The last many years, we've seen more and more talented economists go into industry rather than academia, but mostly I interview economists in tech. I haven't interviewed anyone who is at a hedge fund before, and I thought that that might be an interesting guest. There's always a lot of uncertainty in the job market, but maybe now more than ever, and hearing about more options in the private sector would be useful to people all over the world. So thank you again everyone for supporting the substack and the podcast. I appreciate it immensely as it helps me to do what I love which is listening to people's stories. I hope you enjoy this interview as much as I did.Scott's Mixtape Substack is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. In today's episode, we break down profit shares and performance fees, one of the most debated topics in the asset management industry. Are they a fair way to align incentives, or just another way for fund managers to charge more? We get into the nitty-gritty of who can charge performance fees in India and how it works, the meaning of terms like management fee, hurdle rate, catch-up, and high watermark, and whether performance fees actually create skin in the game for fund managers. We also discuss why losses and performance fees don't go well together, whether investors should care about profit shares or just post-fee returns, and whether paying a performance fee is ever worth it. We also explore some of the murky areas of the industry, including hidden fees, commission structures, and the psychology behind why investors accept certain charges without question. At Capitalmind PMS, we don't charge a performance fee, and we explain why we chose this model. In today's show, I welcome Bobby Sharma, co-founder of Connected Capital Fund, an exclusive membership organization of capital allocators - people who pool investor capital to negotiate preferential terms with sponsors. Bobby is also the manager of Better Capital Fund, his private money lending fund.   Although Connected Capital Fund is just a year old, the organization has already allocated capital to vetted sponsors across markets including Dallas, San Francisco, and Lincoln, Nebraska, raising and investing $11 million in its first year of operation.   Case Study Bobby explains that the Connected Capital Fund team has reviewed fifty deals but invested in only six so far, illustrating their highly selective due diligence process, mitigating risks that individual investors might overlook while providing them with enhanced returns.   As an example, Bobby shares a case study involving a deal with a self-storage operator. The sponsor initially offered investors a 70/30 split with a 6% preferred return. However, Connected Capital secured a 90/10 split and increased the preferred return to 8%.   These favorable terms were then passed on to Connected Capital Fund members, who promoted them to their networks of investors. Depending on the deal, allocators may either retain the entire delta between the original and negotiated terms or share the benefits with their investors.   Allocator Co-Investment Bobby also discusses the practice of backfilling deals. In this process, after a minimum investment is agreed upon with a sponsor, Bobby acts as the first investor, providing the full amount required to meet the threshold.   He then raises additional capital from other investors, 'backfilling' his initial capital contribution. In 95% of cases, he leaves a portion of his own capital in the deal to maintain alignment with investors though, on rare occasions, if demand is particularly strong, he may relinquish his position entirely, leaving no co-investment in the deal.   Bobby was the first fund manager client of Avestor, a platform designed for capital allocators (whose co-founder, Badri Malynur - who was the first guest in this podcast series). He is highly knowledgeable about the capital allocator industry being an allocator himself as well as leading Connected Capital Fund, an organization of allocators.   Tune in to learn more about this emerging industry of capital raisers in today's episode - you'll be glad you did. ***** Explore the world of real estate capital allocators—a fresh approach to financing that's reshaping the industry.   In this series, I talk with allocators, investors, sponsors, and service providers to give you an inside look at this fast-growing space.   PLUS, subscribe to my free newsletter for real estate investors and gain access to: * Introductions to sponsors, allocators, and investment opportunities. * Insights drawn from my 30+ years of experience in real estate investing. * Hacks and tactics for raising capital to help you scale your real estate portfolio.   Visit GowerCrowd.com/subscribe

Few citizens understand how much the toxic alphabet soup of political ideologies such as ESG, DEI and CRT has burst out of academia into government and even financial markets. The first line of defense against this has been the states, particularly the formerly somewhat mundane offices such as Treasurer, Auditor General, Comptroller, Commissioner of Revenue, CFO. Woke politics in investing was a major theme in North Carolina's Treasurer election this year, and the people resoundingly chose Brad Briner to go into office and continue the task initiated by his predecessor Dale Folwell of cleaning ESG and DEI out of consideration in investment decisions. In Ep. 93, Briner joined Jerry on this episode to talk about that battle as well as the battle for federalism, to stop the federal government from forcing N.C. to finance sex change treatments in its already overloaded state health care program. Briner also talks about going into office to reduce its power and the business case against green energy mandates. Briner makes the case against the intrusion of both left wing and right wing politics into finance.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
