PopaHALLics #126 "Hit Man & Hitmakers"Wouldn't it be nice to learn more about the Beach Boys and Neil Young? We enjoy a documentary and a biography giving new insights into these influential musicians and their place in pop culture. We also laugh at a sexy fake hit man, cheer on "The Bear" and "Sweeth Tooth," and are very glad Lady Jane Grey does not lose her head in the swashbuckling, dryly funny reimagining "My Lady Jane."Streaming:"Hit Man," Netflix. In this action comedy directed by Richard Linklater, a dweeby college professor (Glen Powell, "Anyone But You") pretends to be a hit man for police investigations. What happens when he falls for a sexy suspect (Adria Arjona) who thinks he's a cool, confident killer?"My Lady Jane," Amazon Prime. Wait, Lady Jane Grey does NOT get "the chop" at the Tower of London? This reimagining of her life is like "The Princess Bride," with adventure, oodles and oodles of sex, and magic realism. As in people can turn into animals!"The Bear," Hulu. Season 3 finds tormented chef Carmie (Jeremy Allen White) continuing to chase a Michelin star, with lots more yelling in the kitchen and more emphasis on the characters around him."Sweet Tooth," Netflix. The third and final season of this sweet, gentle drama finds Gus the deer boy and his friend Big Man trying to get to Alaska and hook up with Gus' mom, who's trying to stop the plague "the Sick.""The Beach Boys," Disney +. This fan-friendly documentary traces the history of the band known for surf anthems through "Pet Sounds," a revolutionary album in its time, and beyond. Tons of never-before-seen photos, great stories, and critical insights into the band's importance from the likes of Lindsey Buckingham, producer Don Was, and Janelle Monae.Books:"Disobedient," by Elizabeth Fremantle. This novel based on the life of Artemisia Gentileschi—the greatest female painter of the Renaissance—finds her refusing to be silent about a rape and having "visual revenge" in the creation of her masterpiece, "Judith Beheading Holofernes.""Shakey: Neil Young's Biography," by Jimmy McDonough. This 2002 mammoth biography is the definitive look at the life and art of the enigmatic rocker. It was authorized by Young and yet still manages to hold his feet to the fire for questionable creative decisions and the many times he treated those closest to him badly. Music:Since we talk about the Beach Boys and Neil Young, let's have fun, fun, fun with a playlist featuring lots of music from both! PopaHALLics #126 Playlist kicks off with a song by the Four Freshmen, who heavily influenced Beach Boys' leader Brian Wilson's ideas about harmonies.Click through the links above to watch, read, and listen to what we're talking about.

SynopsisIn Berlin on today's date in 1915, prolific German composer Max Reger conducted the premiere performance of what would become his most popular orchestral work.Like Bach, Reger was a master of counterpoint and the fugue, and, like Beethoven, loved writing variations. Reger's Variations and Fugue on a Theme of Mozart starts off simple enough, quoting a familiar theme from one of Mozart's piano sonatas. About 30 minutes later, the simple theme develops into a massive fugue. It's all grand and clever if you like it, or bombastic and tiresome if you don't.The witty Nicolas Slonimsky, in his book Music Since 1900, described it as follows: “Mozart's ingenuous theme … is subjected to torturous melodic anamorphoses, contrapuntal contortion, canonic dislocation, rhythmic incrustation and harmonic inspissation.”To save you the trouble of Googling the definition of “inspissation,” let's just say it's not a condition you would wish on anybody!Whether you're a fan or not, Variations and Fugue on a Theme of Mozart is quintessential Reger, and one is tempted to say, “What did you expect? SynopsisFor decades Nicolas Slonimsky, the Russian-born American composer, conductor, and witty musical lexicographer, compiled a reference work titled “Music Since 1900.” It's a year-by-year, month-by-month, day-by-day chronicle of musical events he deemed significant, interesting, or simply amusing. Here, for example, is Slonimsky's entry for July 15, 1942:“Heitor Villa-Lobos conducts in Rio de Janeiro the first performances of three of his orchestral Choros: No. 6, No. 9 and No. 11, exhaling the rhythms, the perfumes and the colors of the Brazilian scene, with tropical birds exotically chanting in the woodwinds against the measured beats of jungle drums.”Slonimsky did have a way with words, and certainly had fun compiling his mammoth (and highly readable) reference work. For his part, Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos was equally diligent, so much so that he claimed he couldn't always remember everything that he had written. His Choros No. 11 for piano and orchestra lasts some 65 minutes and is one of his most ambitious works. Originally the word “choro” meant improvised music by Brazilian street musicians, but Villa-Lobos always used the word in its plural form to describe over a dozen of his instrumental works.Music Played in Today's ProgramHeitor Villa Lobos (1887 - 1959) Choros No. 9 Hong Kong Philharmonic; Kenneth Schermerhorn, conductor. If you are hoping for an episode about musicals, move along. You and Lisa can vibe about musicals on your own time. In this episode we are talking about classical composers. We've only ever heard about Beethoven, Bach, Mozart and the rest of the classical music boys. It never even occurred to us that women had been composers because what we do know is that women were not really allowed to do jack shit. Come to find out, not only were there a lot of very talented female composers going back to even the 11th century, but some of them were so good, that the men around them took credit for their work! Are you shocked? Neither were we! I say this with much bias, but this episode is a pretty good mini education about women in the history of classical music. (Sorry I butchered all the names!) Synopsis A decidedly UN-politically correct opera had its premiere at London's Covent Garden on today's date in 1905. It was entitled “L'Oracolo” or “The Oracle” by the Italian composer Franco Leoni. Here's a witty one-sentence précis of the opera prepared by Nicolas Slonimsky for his chronology “Music Since 1900”: “L'Oracolo, an opera in one long act, dealing with multiplex villainy in San Francisco's Chinatown, wherein a wily opium-den keeper kidnaps the child of the uncle of a girl he covets, kills her young lover, and is in the end strangled by the latter's father, with a local astrologer delivering remarkably accurate oracles; an Italianate score tinkling with tiny bells, booming with deep gongs, and bubbling with orientalistic pentatonicisms.” Another wag described “L'Oracolo” as “Puccini-and-water,” suggesting that if Puccini were whisky, Leoni music was definitely a less potent brew. But when a touring Italian opera company announced a performance of “L'Oracolo” in San Francisco in 1937, the city's Asian residents protested, demanding they cut the most racially offensive scenes or, better yet, stage a different opera altogether. A compromise was reached, whereby the House manager preceded the performance with a speech assuring the capacity audience that the opera's locale and action were pure fiction, and bore no resemblance to San Francisco's Chinatown past or present. Synopsis We have a special DATEBOOK birthday to note today, for on this date in 1894, one of music's great “date-meisters,” Nicholas Slonimsky, was born in St. Petersburg, Russia. A self-described “failed wunderkind,” Slonimsky became an accomplished conductor and relentless new music promoter, giving the first performances of avant-garde works by Charles Ives, Henry Cowell, and Edgard Varese, to name just a few. A composer himself, Slonimsky's own works include settings of actual advertisements he found in the Saturday Evening Post circa 1925, and a symphonic work that culminates in the triple-forte explosion of 100 colored balloons. Slonimsky was an obsessive collector of the dates, venues, and premiere performers of concert music in the 20th century. Slonimsky's chronicle, entitled Music Since 1900, runs well over 1000 pages and went through several editions during his long lifetime. Slonimsky also served as the editor for several editions of Baker's Biographical Dictionary, writing many of the wittiest contributions himself. Slonimsky's scholarly writings include a 1947 Thesaurus of Scales and Melodic Patterns, an inventory of all conceivable and inconceivable tonal combinations, a work that became a cult classic among BeBop jazz musicians, including the legendary saxophonist John Coltrane. In 1952, Slonimsky published his Lexicon of Musical Invective, a collection of some of the juiciest bits from the devastatingly bad reviews many musical masterpieces received at the hands of contemporary critics, and in 1968, for the Music Library Association of America, a painstakingly researched report entitled Sex and the Music Librarian. Nicolas Slonimsky died in Los Angeles in 1995, just 4 months shy of his 102nd birthday. For over five decades, Nicolas Slonimsky, the Russian-born American composer, conductor, and witty musical lexicographer, compiled a thick reference work titled "Music Since 1900." It's a year-by-year, month-by-month, day-by-day chronicle of musical events that Slonimsky deemed significant, interesting, or simply amusing. Here, for example, is Slonimsky's entry for July 15, 1942: "Heitor Villa-Lobos conducts in Rio de Janeiro the first performances of three of his orchestral Choros: No. 6, No. 9 and No. 11, exhaling the rhythms, the perfumes and the colors of the Brazilian scene, with tropical birds exotically chanting in the woodwinds against the measured beats of jungle drums." Slonimsky did have a way with words, and certainly had fun compiling his mammoth (and highly readable) reference work. For his part, the Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos was equally diligent, so much so that he himself admitted he couldn't always remember everything that he had written or when he wrote it. His Choros No. 11 for piano and orchestra, however, was one work he must have remembered: it's one of his most ambitious compositions and lasts some 65 minutes. Originally the word "choro" meant improvised music by Brazilian street musicians, but Villa-Lobos always used the word in its plural form, and used it to describe a flexible form for over a dozen of his instrumental works. Villa-Lobos also wrote a unique series of works he dubbed 'Bachianas Brasileiras", which might be translated as "Tributes to Bach in the Style of Brazil."

In episodic television (Seinfeld, Friends, etc.), a bottle episode is one in which the writers mostly take leave of the regular format, opting for a cheaply produced, one-set show that often features secondary characters. Infinity times Zero I tried to do that with this episode, not so much because I needed a break from the regular show themes, as because I had absolutely no clue going in what I was going to talk about. But as is usual with free improvisations, themes have a way of establishing themselves by a) sheer force of my monomaniacal personality; b) the fact that I talk about the same basic three things over and over; c) the fact that just because the universe is random, doesn't mean everything isn't connected, and therefore as soon as you begin talking, all sorts of connections start forming automatically in your mind; D) all of the above. Memory + Forgetting = The Future And so it is that I delve into the role that memory plays in improvisation, how it creates a dialogue—sometimes an argument—between the past and present, the result of which is the future. Memory, of course, is imperfect: we remember bits of tunes, conversations, events, but we remember them imperfectly. I find that the imperfection of remembering is itself a creative tool: I will be improvising, and a bit of some tune I played years ago comes up, but I only remember the first part. So what do I do? I'm forced to take the idea in another direction. Or stop. But going in another direction, in some ways, is the definition of creativity. So why stop? Eventually, of course, you do have to stop. A bottle episode is a kind of cheaply produced, usually on one set, more often than not with secondary. Tertiary characters being featured, tends to leave behind the main structure format of the regular show that you're used to. It's this independent little entity of a show. So that's what I'm going to do today. Of course, this is not a television show. It's not truly episodic either for that matter. Even though each podcast has a kind of episodic tendency, there are themes that build up over time, but this episode is going to be a independent little thing in itself. And the reason for that is because I had no idea coming in what I was going to do and it's cheaply produced. Well, it's produced exactly like all the others now they think about it. I put a microphone in front of the piano. I have two microphones inside the piano and I talk and play. So in that sense, it's exactly like every other episode. [MUSIC] Bottle episode or you could call it the whatever episode, whatever is on my mind that may seem irrelevant to everything else. Well, that’s impossible. [MUSIC] Angular Blues or asymmetrical blues. [MUSIC] After all. The premise of this show is free improvisation. It’s called improvisations on the ledge, which seems to imply the possibility of falling off, which I can edit out or leave in. As I’ve said in other episodes, mistakes often lead you down paths you weren’t expecting, which in itself makes free improvisation a worthwhile endeavor. Now that doesn’t mean it’s necessarily a worthwhile endeavor for the listener. It this, well, it’s worth it for me because I get to experiment with new ideas. It doesn’t mean you would want to hear it. [MUSIC] Well, that’s the way with all free improvisation, not just in music, free improvisation in comedy or whatever it is. In that case also used as a tool to explore one’s technique, to go further with it, to get you out of perhaps patterns, and I’ve talked about this before in my avant garde episodes, that’s episodes 15 and 13 and I talked about the avant garde as being a useful technique for those who are otherwise mainstream in their approach, as a useful technique to break out of certain patterns. And free improvisation, whether it’s avant-garde or not,is the same way. And I suppose in television then a bottle episode is a chance for the writers to just go, what the hell! So this is the whatever, what the hell bottle episode where anything can happen but mostly won’t. And the Nice thing is I can edit it all out. I can edit it all out. I can edit… [MUSIC] Since we’re on the topic of doing whatever the problem is. When you’re this old 58 and you’ve had a life in music and a life in general, everything you do, everything you say, everything you play, every move you make. See, this is what I’m talking about. Every move: I start saying that and I think of Sting’s Every Breath You Take because I just said every, every, every. So every thing I play has some association with something else, whether it’s by me or somebody else. And sometimes I get the two confused, I’ll start playing something and I’d go, oh, did I write that? No, that was by Sting. You begin to play on your own memory. Your memory starts intermingling with the present and then the problem becomes do you go with the memory or do you deny it or do you do something somewhere in between those worlds? [MUSIC] So for instance, right there, I was thinking as soon as I played it of a tune and I knew exactly what it was, it was by an old mentor of mine, David Bloom, who has for many years had the Bloom school of jazz here in Chicago. And David wrote this tune that he would play for me in his smokey old school on Rush Street in Chicago. And I believe it was called Shadow of a Soul. The tune, I mean not the school, though God knows that the school had kind of a shadowy vibe to it and it went something like that. But I don’t remember it perfectly cause this was when I was 17 years old, so 41 years ago. And so I started playing it. And inevitably I’m aware of this past, these moments where I see David up there with a cigarette in his mouth, on his Acrosonic piano with cigarette burns probably on the keys because he’d leave the cigarette dangling over the edge. And I have this memory of him playing that. He was not a very proficient pianist. He’s a guitarist and flutist, and I don’t remember where, what chords it was, but I know the tune basically. [MUSIC] So when I’m doing something like that, I’m in the mode of interacting with the past, the present, and trying to create something for the future. This is really what all music is. When you’re playing, you think you’re in the moment, but you’re also in the past, you’re drawing on the past to create the future. [MUSIC] So what I normally do in free improvisation, because there are all of these free associations going on, is I get into kind of a dialogue with my past, other people’s pasts, other music. But I, I try not to do a literal representation of what I remember, partly because I don’t remember it perfectly. And so I try to build on that and create something new out of it. So … [MUSIC] That’s somewhat the beginning of that. David Blum tuned, but I don’t remember where it’s gonna go. So I just do something else with it. [MUSIC] David would never do that. Maybe he would. [MUSIC] He would definitely never do that.
